Very good vegan food with quick service with a minimalistic ambiance. We ordered two plates with 6 sides we found interesting. The rice, curry, and tofu basil were amazing! All of the food is packed with intense flavor from a wealth of seasonings. They are all cooked perfectly without being over or under done.

Great and numerous vegan options to choose from. They all looked so good and couldn't decide so I got the sampler. I would strongly recommend it. I just have to come back for the Pho now! I think this is my new favorite vegan spot Hilo.

    Tofu "fish"

I've only ever ordered takeout food from Vegan Shop, but have never been disappointed. One afternoon we went pretty close to closing time, so all they had was a tofu "fish". I thought it was so cute that they had shaped the tofu into an actual fish shape. The "fish" itself was tasty but the sauce that came with it was to die for. We've tried various vegetable dishes, their fried rice, and a few of their meatless meats (char siu, pork belly, etc) and everything has always been very tasty! Some of their dishes are a little on the salty side, but obviously not so salty that it deters us from coming back for more. We also love their cold noodle with spring rolls -- so refreshing! I also think their prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are decent, so great bang for your buck. With Hilo being limited in vegetarian/vegan options, I'm so glad we've got the Vegan Shop!

This place is an incredible vegan restaurant in Hilo. Lots of spots for seating, street parking & lots of options for food & drinks. I got the pho and the flavors were incredible!! We will definitely be back.

Great portions. This is the number 3. Ordered July 2024. Rice vermicelli noodle dish. Salad, bean sprouts, beef, spring rolls, peanut butter

The food is the best vegan food I've had. Great menu with something for everyone. I want to go back and try more things. Get whatever you want then also get a tofu sandwich. Take it home and eat it later if you want. You won't regret it. My daughter called it "life changing". I wish I knew the secret to making tofu like that. Prices very reasonable. Portions generous. Staff very friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is very chill. Fun place.

Vegan fried rice, noodle salad, char siu, and pork belly

What a spot Vegan Shop is! I visited twice and experienced the same flavorful bliss each time. This eatery is tucked away in a quaint space, just one street over from Kilauea Avenue, where most of the main attractions in the city are. There are several items listed out on the menu (names and photos listed on the shop front) along with a "pick 3" option, with an assortment of offerings, from rice, to salad, vegan proteins. I opted for the "pick 3" option both times. Between my two visits, I tried the vegan fried rice, the fried tofu patty, char siu, pork belly, and the noodle salad. Of the above, my favorites were, hands down, the fried tofu patty, the pork belly, and the char siu. So flavorful and delicious, especially paired with the hot sauce and assortment of spices available at the tables. My friend had ordered the vegan pho, which she confirmed was delicious. She had such a big bowl and ended up with plenty of leftovers! I highly recommend this eatery to any and all locals, travelers, vegans, vegetarians, and non-meat-eaters too! 10/10 would eat here again. I will definitely be visiting Vegan Shop for a bite the next time I am in town!

I have never had a craving like I do for Vegan Shop pho. It has become comfort food for me. The serving is abundant and full of delicious things that I don't even need to know because it's all vegan and all delicious! My daughter got me hooked on this place. She says that the owner makes everything himself. Everything I have tried is amazing, the summer rolls, the tofu marinated with basil (omg), but it's the pho that I always crave. It comes in 3 parts (I order to-go): 1. pho noodles with tofu, tofu skin, and other yummy things 2. broth with more veggies 3. And bean sprouts, red pepper condiment, lemon/lime wedge, and my favorite part - Thai basil in full form so I pick the leaves I want and then plant the rest. It's like a little gift with your food.

Super incredible all vegan restaurant! All the food is cooked and displayed and you just pick what you want so service is super fast. I got the lunch plate for $12 where you pick 3 items and I got the tofu patties, nori fish, and pork belly. Everything was DELICIOUS. I've been vegan for a while but I have never tried vegan pork belly and I was extremely impressed. Serving sizes were very decent as well. Highly highly recommend!

2 choice vegan plate: broken rice, noodles, char siu & fish

Vegan Pho! Vegan Asian food! This shop is vegan Nirvana. Temple food on holy high. Simply good food. My favorite new spot in Hilo! Whether looking for a decent alternative to pho or being open to new adventures, the soup stands alone: Delicious and I would've thought so if it were nameless. I didn't miss a thing. Chinese style plate options pulled me here though. Fried style rice is a must. His vegan pork belly is like candy, also a must. Vegan char siu and fish: unique interpretations; fulfilling. They may not taste entirely similar to their meat namesakes but I'm not sure that's the point. Like the pho they stand on their own merits, particularly their own thing with tiny familiar moments and totally crushing it. Service is superb. Dear magical Vegan Shop, I hope you stick around. Thank you so much for nourishing me!

So happy to find this place in Hilo! They were about to close when we stopped by but still went out of their way to put together delicious plates for us. There aren't that many vegan places in Hilo, and this place made our trip. So so soooo good we still taste it days later! Yum!

The cleanliness could use some improvement especially given the prices. All that being said, it is a popular spot. The parking lot was full. The employees looked busy. We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular.
