I've only ever ordered takeout food from Vegan Shop, but have never been disappointed. One afternoon we went pretty close to closing time, so all they had was a tofu "fish". I thought it was so cute that they had shaped the tofu into an actual fish shape. The "fish" itself was tasty but the sauce that came with it was to die for. We've tried various vegetable dishes, their fried rice, and a few of their meatless meats (char siu, pork belly, etc) and everything has always been very tasty! Some of their dishes are a little on the salty side, but obviously not so salty that it deters us from coming back for more. We also love their cold noodle with spring rolls -- so refreshing! I also think their prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are decent, so great bang for your buck. With Hilo being limited in vegetarian/vegan options, I'm so glad we've got the Vegan Shop! read more

Vegan Shop is an unexpected whole in the wall with excellent commitment to their vegan choices. Located in a strip of stores in Hilo, the location might not draw you in but the reviews don't lie! We called to order our food to go, and were surprised to find that there were only about 3 options left to order at 1pm, because everything else had sold out! When we arrived, the staff was friendly and helpful. They let us know that if we order our food early in the day and let them know what time we're dining in or picking up, they will save the portions for you. We each got friend rice and added tofu. It was a little on the seasoned side (slightly too salty), but delicious. It did have a lot of spice to it, and we wish this was labeled better for my son who doesn't love spicy food. What a spot Vegan Shop is! I visited twice and experienced the same flavorful bliss each time. This eatery is tucked away in a quaint space, just one street over from Kilauea Avenue, where most of the main attractions in the city are. There are several items listed out on the menu (names and photos listed on the shop front) along with a "pick 3" option, with an assortment of offerings, from rice, to salad, vegan proteins. I opted for the "pick 3" option both times. Between my two visits, I tried the vegan fried rice, the fried tofu patty, char siu, pork belly, and the noodle salad. Of the above, my favorites were, hands down, the fried tofu patty, the pork belly, and the char siu. So flavorful and delicious, especially paired with the hot sauce and assortment of spices available at the tables. My friend had ordered the vegan pho, which she confirmed was delicious. She had such a big bowl and ended up with plenty of leftovers! I highly recommend this eatery to any and all locals, travelers, vegans, vegetarians, and non-meat-eaters too! 10/10 would eat here again. I have never had a craving like I do for Vegan Shop pho. It has become comfort food for me. The serving is abundant and full of delicious things that I don't even need to know because it's all vegan and all delicious! My daughter got me hooked on this place. She says that the owner makes everything himself. Everything I have tried is amazing, the summer rolls, the tofu marinated with basil (omg), but it's the pho that I always crave. It comes in 3 parts (I order to-go): 1. pho noodles with tofu, tofu skin, and other yummy things 2. broth with more veggies 3. And bean sprouts, red pepper condiment, lemon/lime wedge, and my favorite part - Thai basil in full form so I pick the leaves I want and then plant the rest. I got the lunch plate for $12 where you pick 3 items and I got the tofu patties, nori fish, and pork belly. Everything was DELICIOUS. Chinese style plate options pulled me here though. Fried style rice is a must. His vegan pork belly is like candy, also a must. Vegan char siu and fish: unique interpretations; fulfilling. When it comes to quality vegan food, this place is the real deal. Having formerly been more of an omnivore, I can say that the vegan pork belly accomplished something I didn't think possible in how it mimicked not only the texture and taste of the pork itself but also the layers of fat that you also get in a pork chop. How? I don't know, but it was stunning and fantastic. Everything on the menu is great, even the soup broth was absolutely delicious, some of the most flavorful we've had for vegan soups. The owner runs the show and explained to us that he had free time on his hands and he's been vegan for 30+ years so he decided to add on the restaurant. When we arrived he had sold out of a lot of stuff which he said can happen because he doesn't like to waste food. He put together a plate with "pork belly" which was a delicious, sweet and savory creation he said he makes with soy, coconut, and rice paper... if my memory serves me.
