Had to change my three stars to a one star because shortly after writing this review below I had the worst upset stomach!!!! Def got sick eating here. Charm little bistro. Try requesting seating facing Broad St, that's the nicest rm. I had the tuna pasta salad and was very disappointed with the amount of tuna in the salad.. hardly any! The salad tasted more like a deli side salad you would want to get with a sammie .Also the Tuscan bread slice that comes with the salad was very hard and almost broke my tooth. Service was good and server was tentative. Will come back again to try another menu option and will definitely be requesting the edible bread this time.

The only negative thing about Sweet Basil is that it's over an hour away from us! We would often dine here while visiting my in-laws in Southern Pines, and boy is it amazing! I have to say, I think these are the best sandwiches I have ever had! Sweet Basil is a very casual and cute lunch spot, nestled in the cozy downtown Southern Pines. The food and service is absolutely stellar, every single time. The two sandwiches I have tried are the Grilled Eggplant and Grilled Chicken Napa. Both of these sandwiches are delicious, and I usually opt for the Grilled Eggplant. So fresh, so flavorful. You can get it served with fries or a side salad. I also love their fries - crispy, salty, and thin but not too thin. I can't wait to have a Sweet Basil sandwich again, hopefully soon!

This places is obviously a neighborhood establishment...just look at the other reviews. I only wish I could give half stars (I'm currently hiding my face as to not be pelted with food by the other yelpers) because I would give this restaurant a 3.5. If the star rating it's on the fence, I usually err on the side of the business and that is why I chose a 4 over a 3. Let's get into why: Likes: indoor and outdoor seating, many vegetarian options, very friendly staff who work well together, location and the cozy atmosphere full of locals. On the fence: I ordered the "hot vegetarian" dish which is essentially a panini with onions/avocado/tomatoes/mozzarella/basil. It was really, really messy and whomever added the olive oil was far too liberal (ducking down again to not meet the eyes of the regulars). It did pack a lot of flavor and that is always a plus! The fries were hot and fresh but they didn't stand out to me. Caveat: The person who took our order informed us that they were short staffed and as a result, they're serving everything in to-go boxes. I'm sure that is not how the staff or owners want to do business so I give them credit for being flexible and adjusting to meet the demand to open up and start offering their customer base a sense of normalcy again.

Updated menu October 2022. Unfortunately still limited seating, styrofoam plating, and staffing issues.

This place is packed during lunch with business locals and seniors. You have to come early since the waiting time for a table can be very long. Their daily soouls are very good so are most of the sandwiches, unfortunately I went for the vegetarian. The vegetarian rain should be called hot cheese sandwich since is mainly cheese and it is very rich, it is not by any means a vegetarian sandwich

Cream of zucchini soup: light, refreshing, reminds me of a cream of broccoli but a lighter, greener taste. Finishes with a savory zing! The bread that comes with it is savory, lightly salted and crisp. Delightful! The Portobello Spinach tort was highly satisfying. A light, crispy crust help grilled portobello mushroom, zucchini, and spinach held together by creamy mozzarella. The side salad consisted of a spring lettuce mix and carrot with an ever-so-light balsamic dressing. The setting is quaint. There are three dining areas. We ate in the front: windows, light, and marble floors. It became crowded and a bit noisy. But it was still enjoyable. Fresh flowers don every table. Service was prompt and friendly. This was the perfect spot for a delicious Lenten lunch. We will return to explore the menu.

Cute interior, friendly staff. Expensive menu for what the food is but worth the cost for the location and ambience.

Good experience. Definitely try this place…read more Plan for 2 hours. Not a negative or positive- just an observation. Bottle of wine, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts = $175 not including tip. Complimentary biscuits were not fully cooked - still doughy. Waitstaff said they were "waiting for the biscuits to cook" - totally understandable, but wait 3 more minutes so you don't serve uncooked dough. This is a time management thing for the kitchen: 5:00 reservations = put biscuits in the oven no later than 4:40. Escargot was good. Disappointed that our dirty/empty appetizer plates stayed all over the table so long. This is the difference between "fine dining" & a typical restaurant. Utensils used for appetizers should be removed & replaced for main meal. Just another little detail that sets apart "price is worth it" & "why'd I pay that much?" Steak frites were good. Lamb was good. Desserts were good. Cacao nibs were entirely too hard - I thought I was eating pieces of nut shells. Not enjoyable. Waitress was very friendly, but we did get the feeling that we weren't regulars, so it was ok to not pay attention to us (like remove dirty dishes).

We were seated in a back room at a long table, one of three. This room was warm and lovely. One table was already occupied, the other filled up shortly before we finished. From start to finish, our dining experience was wonderful. We did not have to worry about our little ones disrupting other guests, as the other party had little ones too. Our server, Madeline, was absolutely perfect! She was attentive without being intrusive. She had a good sense of humor and guided out decisions for food when we asked. She served us promptly and with a smile and made us feel so welcomed. I wish I could remember what everyone else ordered but I do know that my Pork Schnitzel was incredible! Also huge so I had enough for another meal the next day. When I return I will order the same thing. My husband brought a birthday cake in for me and our server brought that out at the end of the meal with plates and forks for everyone. We forced her to take a piece for her break, which she goodnaturedly did. There is only one tiny tiny thing to mention: It did take a long while for the 5 year old's drink and food to arrive. Not anyone's fault, it was very very busy. But try to explain that to a 5 year old. Rolls were served but they were too spicy for her. Or maybe the butter was spicy? Maybe feed your little ones something beforehand if you go on a busy weekend night, as we did. Kudos to the kitchen for pleasing so many different tastes so much, and for management for hiring Madeline who is a great asset to your restaurant.

There's an upscale bar in the entry that had several seats open even when the tables were all full. I started with the crab hush puppies. What's not to like about fried dough after all, but I didn't really get much crab flavor out of them. The buttermilk and corn preparation came through more. The entree was a showstopper, though - grilled elk chops with a pomegranate glaze and country mashed potatoes. They were scrumptious, and the al dente vegetables cooked in with the potatoes gave them a nice toothsomeness. One of the best entrees I've had in quite some time. It's nice when a menu gives you a protein choice you don't see everywhere. Parking is fine, with a paved lot in front and spaces on either side of the adjacent street. Service was welcoming and efficient.
