Now I'm not a big Thai food fan but my boyfriend is! This was our first time trying it and he loved it!! I had the Pad See Ew with beef and it was pretty yummy. The beef was delicious with the sweet soy sauce. I think I would have preferred it with rice, so next time I'll get a side of rice! But my boyfriend got the I Love Veggies dish with extra chicken and subbed brown rice. He was skeptical at first look but once he took a bite, he was sold. Now Thai food and Sweet Basil Express is all he talks about. He loves the flavor and how fresh it all is. We also tried the potstickers and they were fantastic. My friends and I have been trying hard to remain patient while waiting for this to open up on campus since we read about it in the Daily Emerald. Well, I'm happy to report that Sweet Basil Express is open, ready for business, and also delicious! I have yet to be to the Sweet Basil downtown, but from what I hear, this new one is significantly more casual and cheaper. Most things on the menu seemed to be about $6 for lunch and $8 for dinner. We got the cashew gai something (number 10 on the menu) and were quite pleased, although it wasn't as spicy as a friend had suggested. The atmosphere is nice; fresh paint on the walls, various art, and what I hear is Sweet Basil's famous functional just stylish track lighting. One downside: the dining area looks like its trying to imitate sardines in a can. There you have virtually no privacy from the people at other tables and I'd bet it gets really noisy during busy times of the day. read more

This is one of the most reasonably priced Thai places in Eugene. I went recently and had the House Curry for lunch, it was very tasty after I added some Siracha. Moved back to Oregon and was excited to get one of my favorite Thai places, but now having driven to Eugene TWICE to try to get this place we have found it to be closed both times. What's super awesome is their phone lines are still on, and they're terrible about answering normally, so it seems like they're open, and you can even place an online order that goes through successfully... when they're closed! Now have tried for both dinner and lunch, they change their hours and days they're open seemingly every other week. It just sucks on top of a crappy attitude towards customers that I remember from my times going last year. Sitting in the storefront of the now departed "Hanna's", Sweet Basil Express has cleaned up the act of this typically funky corner of the University of Oregon food options. Now a weekly favorite of mine, their food is fresh and fast (if you time your meal right), with relatively friendly service. The word Express suggests fast food, but the quality and presentation suggests a sit down restaurant. It is true that you need to avoid the rush by getting their early, or eating a little later, because the peak rush means your meal will be anything but fast. Whenever I hear "express" in a restaurant's name, my instincts tell me to avoid. However this is one place I'd be glad to revisit. It's certainly not the best Thai I've ever tasted, but the portions are hearty and served up quickly and the prices are very reasonable. I've been to this place a couple of times and I always order the Tom Kha Gai and oh my god rolls, this time I ordered it Tom Kha during lunch, which states in their menu that it's $4, he charged me $4.75.. I didn't want to argue because it's $.75 cents but it happened quite often. They never tell you what they're charging, you'll have to ask or be surprised when you sign the receipt. This place is a quick and go kind of place. But the quality is not really there. I have attached a picture of my soup. There is about 3 slices of mushroom (which equals to one full mushroom) 2-3 pieces of chicken, a slice of tomato and the broth doesn't taste quite there. I'm really disappointed because the past few times I ordered (during dinner) it has been good, and there were actual ingredients. With this being said, I don't think I'll go here any more. Oh man. Was recommended this spot from a very nice dude at the U-Haul upon arriving into town, and boy he didn't disappoint on this one. The food was excellent and the price was unbeatable for the amount of food that is on your plate! The Oh My God was also a super way to kick off a meal. The restaurant was dirty, and despite it being slow (I was the only one in there), the owner was just on her laptop and failed to acknowledge me. I ordered the chicken pad Thai to go and the portion was a bit on the small side, which irritated me since I was there a couple minutes after the lunch prices was over. If I was there 3 minutes earlier and I woulda paid $2 less. The pad thai was pretty good, yet was reminiscent of some boxed pad Thai I got at Safeway. I try to eat only natural and organic foods, but I was really craving Thai and it gave me a massive headache, which means it was probably loaded with MSG. In Eugene for business and actually came across Sweet Basil Express here on yelp. I'm a big fan of thai food and it sounded great according to the reviews, but.... I was not impressed. The lady took my order and it was quickly ready. I had ordered the chicken pad thai to go. By the time I got back to my hotel room with my food (5 minutes) and took it out of the bag, the to-go box was falling apart. The pad thai was heavy and was seeping through the box. The pad thai was alright, good flavor and there was a lot of chicken. I liked how they did not mix all the bean sprouts into the noodle but instead just put them on the side. I've definitely had some four-star level experiences at Sweet Basil Express, but both the food and the service are really inconsistent. Pros: the food is typically better than any other "Asian cuisine" in the campus area, the portions are generous, the prices are decent, and there's this one guy who works the cash register and sometimes, inexplicably, gives me free soda. They simply offer Thai fair that isn't too adventurous among a setting with a warm color palette and Buddha heads on the walls. The eggrolls, potstickers, and 'oh my god' rolls are good bits of fried satisfaction, but the entrees can leave you wanting more in terms of flavor. Some items, like the Pad Thai or spicy fried rice, are just fine, but others like the Pad Kee Mao just don't taste right, and have even turned out overdone. My husband and I got delivery from SBE through deliverydish.com. The food was good as always. I had the yellow curry without onions or bell peppers spiced mildly with seafood. The calamari was tough, but there were tons of scallops and a good amount of shrimp. It was a little spicy for mild, so if you are sensitive you might want to ask them for extra mild. My husband had the I Love Veggies dish with tofu. He originally wanted the cashew gai, but apparently that dish cannot be made vegan. All in all a good dinner.
