Our community contracts with them to take care of our townhome community, both landscaping and snow removal. It has been a really good experience from both aspects. Their crews are very considerate and very respectful of our property and residents. They are always on time and Tm is always available to address whatever our needs might be. I could call them, leave a message, and it's literally minutes until I receive a call back. No matter the issue, they will resolve it quickly and professionally. The office staff is also very reliable,personable and attentive to our needs. We screened several contractors before deciding on Sweeny's and it is one of the best decisions we have made. I was really hoping for the best. In fact their website says "We want you to be totally thrilled with our service...so absolutely delighted you will recommend us to your friends and neighbors." Unfortunately that isn't the case. Thrilled? Heck, I'm the opposite - I'm....UN-thrilled? ANTI-thrilled? REVERSE-of-Thrilled? Ok - truly Disappointed!!! It started with some trouble even getting hold of them. 2 phone calls to them over a 3 day period just to get them to respond. And even then it was a text - "how can we help you" - WELL, I've already left messages. And now I'm supposed to text them about my wants and needs for a landscaping project? Well I finally was able to speak with someone and did get them to come out for an estimate. This part was fine - they did spend more time than others who had come out, were very nice, knew their stuff, helpful etc. I recieved a quote in fairly short order. Since I had several other quotes I hadn't yet made a decision when I got an email reminding me of thier services, the estimate etc. (Actually a good idea on thier part - no one else did that!). So I responded and asked them to give me a call. Was told they would forward my request to the estimator. After 2 plus business days I still hadn't heard back from them - and THEY were the ones to say contact us if you're interested! I let them know that I had questions, would like to discuss, that it had been days (again) etc - well NOW it's been almost a week now and NOTHING! I'm what you would call a HOT LEAD - someone who contacted you, got an estimate and wanted to hire you! And you leave me hanging? NO contact? No call, text, email - NADA? No one's that busy! After a week? That's PATHETIC, RUDE and, given this review, BAD FOR BUSINESS!!! read more

An awful company that does not stand behind its work then tries to hide behind their online interface when you try to call them out on it. If they see an unsatisfied customer they will screen their calls and literally never call you back. The whole process started out great - getting an estimate, etc. and they seemed very promising, and I had very low expectations. But after a power rake and overseeding resulted in a truckload of dirt strewn carelessly in giant clumps throughout my yard I had to call and find out what they thought they were doing. No one would return my calls. At this point my lawn was pretty much dead thanks to them. Then they come back in 2 days thinking they are going to mow the dirt pile. Of course I told the crew to go away, and certainly Sweeney added the mowing session to my bill as if they did the work. I have called multiple times only to leave messages. Emailing them gets nowhere if they don't want to answer to you. All they do is blindly send invoices. I told them I wasn't going to pay for this shotty work, and I have no intention to. I even wrote them a letter and sent via mail and still got no response. So I will give their invoices the same level of attention they give their customers - ZERO. I'm done with them and you all should be as well. Stay away. read more

I had two AMAZING young men work very hard to cut, shape and prune my bushes in the front and back yards, today. They started the session by asking what my expectations were. They listened intently, followed and questioned my responses, while offering their suggestions and recommendations. It was extremely hot and humid today, but they worked on my yard for about two and one half hours in direct heat and sun, while also enduring an unexpected thunderstorm. When they completed the job, they asked if I was happy with the work and continued to smile throughout the whole conversation. It was obvious that these young men really enjoyed doing their work and took great pride in the outcome. Sweeney Landscaping did an excellent job sodding an area that was previously the site of a deck. When estimating the job, Tim Sweeney provided a number of good suggestions in how to design the perimeter for a nice look and low maintenance. Tim was generous with his knowledge on how to control weeds in the stone border around much of my house. On the day the project was scheduled, Tim and his foreman came to the jobsite along with the crew and reviewed the work to be done to make sure everyone was on the same page. The weather wasn't great but the crew did an excellent job of making the design a reality. They also added some stone to other perimeter areas to improve the look of the entire area. They did a fine job of core aeration for the whole lawn and applying weed control to a stubborn weed patch which now (a couple days later) is showing some progress. I hired these guys to handle landscaping services for me this summer. Process is very easy, everything is handled online including quoting, billing etc., so it is super easy to deal with. I literally never spoke to a person via phone as it simply wasn't necessary. Their communications have always been good and prompt. Someone is manning the e-mail regularly and getting the information required and getting back to you. Communications are clear. There was a minor snafu after I'd stopped service (this was a rental and a tenant moved in so I didn't need the service any longer) in my receiving a bill for some services later. I don't know if something happened on their end and they mistakenly scheduled a cut or what happened. What I do know is that I contacted them and they responded promptly, took a day to figure out what happened and removed the charges with no hassle whatsoever. Prices are reasonable, they offer options/packages to choose from so you can tailor that to your needs. Their service was always good and, as indicated, their communications are good and they have proven to stand behind their word, which, to me, is the most important part, as honest people are hard to come by in this world. I will use them again without hesitation and would recommend them to anyone. read more

The crew really seems like they enjoy what they do and aren't bothered at all by our 3 dogs loudly greeting them. We had an area in our backyard that used to be a garden, but over the years became an overgrown eyesore. I sent a picture to Sweeney's for a quote and got a reasonable price for the clean up and removal of plant material. I found the process easy and convenient because everything was online. The proposal was emailed to me and I was able to sign electronically and email it back. I received the deposit invoice via email and was also able to pay electronically. Our project was scheduled a few weeks out on a Tuesday, but then got rescheduled to Monday. Monday it rained so I was told it would be rescheduled during the week. 3 days of beautiful weather went by and no one showed up. We called and emailed but did not receive a response until Friday to where we were told we weren't on the schedule. At this point we were pretty angry but we received an apologetic phone call and were told they'd be out on Saturday. Mike and Tim showed up Saturday morning around 8:15. Nice guys and very apologetic. They cleaned up that eyesore in no time and left me with perfect soil for planting grass seed. They did a great job. I would give Sweeney's 5 stars, but I feel that the anger we felt could have been avoided by communicating. 3 days of emails and phone calls unanswered doesn't sit well with customers who've paid a deposit and have expectations. All that aside, I would give them another chance to earn that extra star when I have another landscaping project. read more

Last fall, I needed to have an aggregate pathway installed along my fence instead of dealing with a mudding pathway for my dog. Tim came out to look over the site and make recommendations. Tim the boss said it takes a crew 8 hours to do one round...so how did they get here 3 times and still unable to clear the drive? Other neighbors using their service had clear driveways. Very poor communication and problems with billing. The customer service was the worst I have ever experienced with any business.

Update: After much back and forth (with my wife and me separately), Tim came out to inspect the property and agreed that the work had not been done properly. He offered to come out again. He returned with a different crew and spent another 3.5 hours on our yard. My wife and I both appreciate completing the job, but it did not have to take so much back and forth to get to this point, and it should have been done right the first time. I was extremely frustrated that we were charged almost $900 for a job that initially seemed to take just 3.5 hours to begin with (which, by the way, Tim said is exactly how long he originally thought it would take...which means he was totally cool billing almost $900 for a 3.5 - 4 hour job of virtually all labor...Yikes!). My wife was upset that the work was not done to her satisfaction. In either case, the response from Sweeney should have been to come out right away and inspect, not get into back and forth and arguing, and then they should have gone above and beyond what they said they would do in an effort to repair the damage that was done. It all just leaves us feeling totally disappointed with the whole experience. read more

We have a home in Schaumburg and hired Sweeney's landscape to do our gardening. The flowers they planted were very inmature. No matter how much we took care of them they are continually dry, small, and wiltering away. The same flowers were planted by other landscapers in my neighborhood and they were mature, robust and grew strong. I explained all this to Sweeney's landscape and they simply just blamed me and then I asked if they can give me a guarantee that the plants will bloom for the Spring/Summer of 2015 or give me a discount for the flowers being so inmature and there answer was " this is being turned over to our attorney's" This is NO way to conduct business and its a shame. Our neighbors ask us Why are your flowers and bushes so small? We have good shade and we maintain our garden. We also spoke to two gardeners not from this area and they are the ones that told us that the planted flowers were too inmature. Our front lawn garden looks like it belongs to a home a quarter of the size, it s looks weird. Beware of this company and whomever you go with ask your neighbors first. read more

I am very sorry that I must completely reverse my earlier 5-star review for Sweeney's Custom Landscaping, originally posted in 2015. Over the course of 2017, Sweeney's service completely fell apart. Their prices went up, while their routine mowing service became more and more destructive. They smashed an irreplaceable lawn ornament, then stacked the pieces to hide the damage. They crushed one drain downspout, and knocked another out of alignment - every time they mowed, for four months. Then it got worse. I came home one day to find two of my large shrubs chopped down, only raw stumps remaining, with no notice or permission. The last straw was when they destroyed an entire bed of 20-year established rose bushes. No notice, no permission, just hacked every rose down to bare dirt. I made many calls, and never got any acknowledgement or explanation from them. I have not renewed my contract with Sweeney's for 2018, and I must now strongly recommend against working with them. I will miss the reliable, high-quality service that I got from them for many years. read more

We worked with Sweeney's to design and plant our new landscaping in the backyard. Tim and Tom were both wonderful to work with. They had great ideas and were very patient with the changes I wanted to see. The pricing was reasonable and the work was done on time. We also used Sweeney's last year for our lawn fertilizing and weed control. The work was thorough, the lawn looked good, and the prices were again reasonable. From my experience, the quality of work and service was much better than the large chain companies. Our lawn was green with very few weeds. Communication has also been very easy. I have only contacted them via email and they have been very responsive. I also love the ability to do online invoices and billing! We will be using Sweeney's again this year and have recommended them to others. We will likely use them for more landscaping services in the future. read more

This is probably the one service I didn't think I'd use when we moved into our home...it's a lawn. It can't be that bad right? WRONG! It's a jungle out there, but Sweeney's came to our rescue. I cannot say enough great words about their wedding of our front flowerbed. They took a jungle and turned it into a manageable garden for us. They also cut down all of the overgrowth from our neighbors homes and weeded all the weeds growing between our patio tiles. Their lawn cutting service weekly has kept the lawn police neighbors at bay. The online payment options and billing make my busy day better too. read more

They just want to have you sign their quote that comes immediately but they don't want to respond to questions like I might want more mowings than I'd originally thought I needed. Customer service is a joke! They are really nice until they get you to agree to the estimate, but then communication halts. Failed to confirm appointment or communicate time needed, etc. to make me feel comfortable with the plan of work. Did not return phone messages, emails were short and did not answer my specific questions, I.e. What time will they be there, seems like a pretty basic question to answer to me, but it wasn't. Ended up canceling because I would rather pay more for someone who was more courteous and respectful of the customers home and time. read more

We started with dethatching of our lawn where other services offered aeration instead but there is a difference. Sweeney's did for us for what we wanted and that started us to inquire about their mowing and trimming program. Their workmanship was excellent. We should have had them trim the little bit that was left but we felt that my wife could finish because I can only walk with a cane and she doesn't really know on how to use the trimmer. I know that if I would have asked, they would have did complete trimming which was minimal at no extra charge. Sweeney's, I believe work with three or four crews. However many, you would never know the difference and I know that we did not have the same crew all the time, but they all did a fantastic job. We had the mowing and trimming done every other week and aeration during the season. They offer the full spectrum in lawn and garden maintenance and services. You will find their cost comparable but services impeccable. Their crews know the needs of their customers. read more

My experience with landscapers is limited, and so my rating is based on a comparison to only one other service I used - unfortunately they moved on to do mostly commercial properties. I think for the basic cut of the landscape Sweeney does fine. Can't comment on fertilizing etc since I didn't have them do that. But I had them do something other than a cut, and had to go back to some of it to remove plants left behind. To be fair, I didn't complain and so didn't give them a chance to correct that. However I did complain that some plants looked sickly after transplanting, but the plants looked better the following spring like the owner said. Communications in my experience haven't always been responsive or timely, but i think if you deal directly with the owners you'll be okay. Right now there is an invoice dispute, no biggie, but I get no response or clarification, only a note that my invoice is aging. I just want to know what I'm paying for. read more
