I knew when I hired Arun that he'd charge me more than most other companies. I hired him 9 yrs ago and have since hired many others who were cheaper. I saved money with the others; however, I also never got the attention to detail that I wanted. I was always disappointed with the end result. After neglecting my landscaping all summer, there was a lot of work to do to prepare for winter. Deadheading a ton of plants, cutting Ivy back from my house and trees, trimming tree branches away from my house, shaping my boxwoods, and removing tons of leaves because I live in an established neighborhood filled with huge trees... it was way more work than I have the capacity to do. Arun gave me an estimate of $1700. I knew it would be high, but it was even higher than expected. I considered going back to one of my previous landscapers, but ultimately, I wanted my property to be done exactly as I wanted it. If I could give negative stars, I would. 2 people from this company came out for a quote to remove overgrowth and re establish garden beds. Half of the work discussed was done and a raised bed was removed that should not have been removed with rebar supports left in place. This was not ever a part of the plan. No weed barrier fabric was used where beds were cleaned up. Over priced and completely uncaring. The resolve to these issues is we can cut the rebar and deliver mulch for you. I had used this company a few months ago to do some landscaping and I was pleased with the work, but felt they charged way too much for labor. I recently requested a quote to plant 5 small bushes, transplant an existing shrub, and mulch a small area. While the price for the bushes and mulch was fair, the labor charge was more than ridiculous. I was quoted $620.00 for two men for two hours! . That comes out to $160.00 per man hour. What landscape employee makes $160.00 to dig a small hole, and drop in a small bush??? NO ONE. I understand that they are there to make a profit, but not at that rip off rate. Professional electricians and plumbers don't even charge that much. Really Arun, You need to send two men at $620.00 to dig 6 holes and spread a little mulch!! Get Real read more

"Exceeded expectations" is not a phrase I have EVER used to describe my experience with a service company... until now. I could not be happier with the work Rent A Gardner performed for me. I needed bushes removed, general cleanup of my front yard, some landscaping bricks repositioned, and our backyard patio cleaned and re-sanded. The gentlemen Rent A Gardner sent were professional, neat, and conscientious. They approached my "project" as though they were working on their own home. Not only did they power wash the patio, they also power washed all of the landscaping bricks in the front yard - they now look like new! Our patio was laid 15 years ago. We tried re-sanding it ourselves once (never again) and hired another company once (also never again). Neither finished product looked good. The gentleman who worked on our patio actually removed some bricks to reset them, to give us a new, tighter edge to our patio. If you've ever had your patio power washed, you know how messy it is. Horrible grifters!!! BEWARE OF THIS SERVICE! I'm filing a law suit in small claims court. Every service that has come this year with an estimate to clean up Rent a Gardner's mess says this company lied to me when they took $2K to restart my garden. It is not possible to restart the garden. The trumpet honeysuckle vines that strangled my garden, Rent A Gardner assured me would be removed. Within 2 months the garden was again strangled. I have complained and they blew me off. $2K and court costs will be the remedy. Rip off artists. read more

I have worked with Arun and Rent A Gardener in the past and I have always been struck by his professionalism and the focus and dedication of his team to always get it right. He goes above and beyond and truly values the relationship he has with his customers. This time I had several projects that I was contemplating. I spent some time going through the property with Arun so he could understand my needs and vision. The estimate I was given for the three projects was reasonable so I decided to go ahead. Not only were the workers respectful of my time and property but they did a fantastic job; as though the property were their own. I had garden cleanup and a complete retooling of a back garden bed, a power washing and sealing of a patio, and a resetting of multiple areas with large garden stones in both the front and back gardens. They wanted to charge $1650.00 which is crazy!! Stay away from them. If you go to their Facebook page you will see before and after pictures of a section of our backyard (Downers Grove - July 2020). Our main issue was the drainage area in our backyard. Our yard contains a drain that the village installed many years ago to control flooding of the surrounding properties. The slope of the drain needed to be elevated. We also needed a makeover of the landscaping of the slope & behind the slope. All of our other mulch beds needed sprucing up. Rent A Gardener worked with our requirements, suggested alternatives & after the job was finished we are extremely happy. Ok, I am SUPER pleased with how my yard turned out! First of all, Arun came out to do the estimate and he was really nice to work with, and very professional/ knowledgeable. He also came out on our starting morning to walk the guys through everything that needed to be done and anything to be careful about. We have a massive backyard that needed a full "spring clean-up" plus re-mulch, each of which required a full day of labor plus 2 trucks of mulch. In those 2 days, they not only did everything they promised in the backyard, but cleaned + mulched around the tree in our front yard and mailbox, redefined and mulched our side yard beds, and put new topsoil in my little side veggie garden area. They also put topsoil and seed on a few patches in the front that needed it. They even put in a few flagstones by our sump pump overflow and our hose reel so we wouldn't get wet spots! Then when they were finished, they cleaned everything up perfectly. I am so impressed, and would absolutely recommend them to everyone! read more

Arun, what I can say that hasn't been mentioned before in the other 21 reviews. Professional, thorough, on time and on budget and willing to work with me. Our whole property I had let get away from me since my own business has me working everyday. I finally decided to get on top of things and did my research on landscapers, not lawn services who just cut grass. Arun and I schedule to meet on a Saturday, we did a complete walk around of the property with me explaining my vision and he listened attentively giving his own suggestions and welcomed advice along the way. After the walk around, we talked casually about family, business ethics and about being business owners ourselves; in the end, I didn't need to look at other companies. He gave me a verbal quote and I accepted on the spot. Arun promised a written and detail breakdown of all services and related cost within a couple of days and sure enough it was in my email box. He was scheduling about 10 days (last week) out and emailed when my 2 days of work would be done. I also received a call from their office manager to confirm as well. They handle calling JULIE and it was totally seamless. Day of, Arun and his crew showed up early to their ETA and began work right away when I came home around 9pm, I was amazed just how much they accomplished knowing day 2 was where the real work was going to be. Arun followed up with an email and we're planning to do our final walk around this week with my intention of scheduling spring cleanup and new plantings in April '16. I had to wait a month for an appointment, and I did so because of all the good reviews on Yelp. On the day of the appointment (a week ago) I was home waiting to speak with Arun. He showed up, took photos, and promised to send me a quote. Also, I will mention that the owner did initially block time on their work calendar at the time of the quote, which would have saved time in scheduling the work. After a week's time I did not have the quote, and but found out they updated my email incorrectly. I have now received the quote but have decided to get a few others before making a decision to use this service. read more

I read all the glowing reviews here on this platform and decided to go with these guys even though they were quoting one and a half times as much as the others. I'm giving them one star for responsiveness, for getting back to us with a quote at once. We hired them to level parts of our patio that had sunk in, pressure wash, polymer sand, and plant a few irises in the backyard. They pressure washed the patio but levelled only a small portion of the patio and even that was not done properly. So, Arun came out to review the work. Turns out their project manager had not understood the scope of the work that included the entire patio and had estimated the amount of sand he'd need for a patio that size incorrectly. Arun wanted to charge us more, over and above the high price we were already paying. We wouldn't budge on the price and after behaving like he was doing us a favor absorbing the extra cost, he promised to come back and complete the work. He did but now, barely a month later, the weeds are back - so much for the shoddy polymer sanding. I haven't contacted them, and I don't intend to - I consider this job a write-off. Great experience! Rent-a-Gardener had planted 4 big trees for us in 2011 and we were happy to give our business to owner Arun again. We wanted new beds along a very long fence on one side of our yard that would curve around a new shed area. We wanted trees, shrubs and perennials. We also needed someone to build a solid foundation for the shed, which involved digging out old tree roots and old landscaping stones. Also needed a buried drain pipe to divert water from a downspout which floods the yard during heavy rains. We would have been unsure about having landscapers do the shed footing, but Rent-a-Gardener's horticulturist, Cindy, understood what we wanted and we knew the owner, Arun, was an engineer and he supervised that part. Within a few days of our first meeting, Cindy emailed a rough "big picture" idea for the beds as well as photos of specific plant suggestions. She was very flexible and wasn't offended if we didn't want exactly what she'd suggested or if we changed our minds, etc. She was very good at working with us to tweak the overall design and the individual plants. She met us at the nursery to see all the perennial and shrub possibilities and to tag the 3 big trees. I love getting to pick out the exact trees! Once we narrowed down our plant selection, she gave us a preliminary estimate for all of this work. She also explained how they estimated labor costs. The estimate was very clear. I was really impressed with the men who did the site prep, planting and the additional work of building a really solid foundation for our new shed and digging a buried downspout extension for us. They did a great job on every single aspect of this. They worked really hard and were good at problem-solving. They've been with Rent-a-Gardener a long time. Cindy came each day, sometimes twice, to make sure they placed each plant exactly where I wanted it and Arun came by as needed to check on the planning and execution. The landscapers were very patient about that too, even replanting one tall grasses and one bush I decided to change! It seemed like we had added many plants at the last minute and that the guys did quite a bit of what seemed like extra work -- even removing an old basketball hoop and its deep cement footing; hacking out a stump that hadn't been visible in the new bed; and cleaning out, trenching and mulching an adjacent bed so it would all look finished -- so I was dreading the invoice. I was amazed to see that it was actually less than the original rough estimate. Total time between first visit and completion was one month and 2 days! Our sump pump out flow drainage had been constructed incorrectly by a previous owner of our home and a replacement was needed. Arun came out on a Saturday. He assessed the situation and gave us a description of the work he would do to correct the problem. He also gave a verbal estimate that was followed with a written estimate a few days later. When it was time to do the work, Arun's crew showed up on time and worked professionally and neatly. They took care of our lawn as well or better than we would ourselves. After waiting for a 2 hr window for 2 1/2 hrs and calling, the same man that took the original call, claimed that no one "Put in the system" what I needed. Rigo and Orlando were fantastic. They worked hard in blazing sun and temperatures in the 90's. One area was about 3' x 20'. Another was 5' x 20'. I'm not sure of the area of the third area because it is curved. That area was tough because there were very persistent "weed trees" that kept coming up no matter what I did. They dug them out by the roots. Other problems were stones that had "migrated" out from the house and the tree roots from the large tree that was taken down a few years ago. After all the areas were dug out, compost was added and tilled in. They had a little time left but instead of packing up they weeded my courtyard and another garden bed. Then they weeded and edged the garden around the mail box. They were both very easy to work with - communication was easy and they were very responsive to little changes I wanted to make. read more

I'm leaving a review because this is the 2nd time I had an appointment to have an estimate done to my home and there was no call no show. The first time I called the day before my appointment which was on a Saturday. Their office said I wasn't scheduled because of a new office employee never put me in the books. Ok no problem. I made another appointment for the following Saturday. Which is today, and no call no show. Disappointing.
