I walked in and was hit with that cozy, small-town smell -- a little wood smoke, a hint of fried onion, and the promise of a meal that would stick to your ribs. The lighting was soft enough to make an 86-year-old face look about 70, so right away I was feeling pretty good. Now, the food -- good heavens. I ordered the house special: a big ol' burger stacked higher than a Michigan snowdrift, with cheese melting down the sides like it was trying to escape. Every bite was juicy, seasoned just right, and tasted like it had been made by someone who actually cares about food. The fries were crisp, golden, and seasoned better than some of my past marriages. Then came the drinks -- and when I say they were submerged with flavor, I mean I nearly needed a lifeguard. The bartender handed me something called the "Farmhand's Mule," and I swear I could taste the orchard, the field, and maybe a little bit of sin all in one sip. Smooth, tangy, and just enough kick to make an old man like me feel alive again. And don't even get me started on the staff. Every one of them had a smile brighter than a Michigan sunrise. Now, I'm 86 -- I creak when I stand and wheeze when I sit -- but those waitresses were flirting with me like I was a young buck back in '58! I don't know if it was the bourbon talking or just their good manners, but they sure made me feel like I still had a little spark left in me. By the end of the night, I was leaning back in my chair, patting my belly, and thinking -- maybe being this close to the border isn't so bad after all.
