As my profile says, I'm a plantita, a plant shop connoisseur... this one has been on my list since…read moreI learned about it a few months ago and when I drove by last weekend and realized how close it is (about three miles), I made a mental note to visit soon. The parking situation is questionable. There's street parking in some areas along Western and probably on Grace as well. The large parking lot is for the pizza place next door which maybe won't get mad at you when they're not open? Not sure, but you can live on the wild side! There is a step up to get into the shop so bear that in mind if it's helpful. The shop is small, not overcrowded at all, but doesn't feel empty either. I'm not sure if I'd call it a plant shop or a florist... there's a bit of a difference there. I would say this shop is equal parts both. There are a good selection of plants, not an overwhelming number, and some varying plant accessories (books, pruners, watering cans, etc.). They have some dried flowers, dried bouquets, and various floral accompaniments; they also have an overflowing flower bar where you can create your own bouquet. They'll arrange one for you for an additional price, too. I asked if they have classes or workshops and the woman said they do, which I'll be notified of because I'd signed up for their mailing list. The flowers they had were beautiful and they had some unique ones that will make some beautiful arrangements. I bought a pre-arranged mini bouquet that has brightened my weekend! Oh, and possibly my favorite part of the shop: Percy the pup! (Now I'm wondering, was it Percy or Perry? I think the former.) As I was browsing near the entrance, a small little friend trotted out to greet me and was so friendly. He let me pet him immediately, tail wagging and ready to show me some love. I'm a cat person and don't have any pets at the moment but now I'm thinking, should I get a little puppy AND a cat??

I had a very disappointing experience with the customer service here. The woman working was…read moreextremely rude and unprofessional. I arrived before closing time and was in the middle of placing my order when she abruptly refused to continue because it was exactly 4:30 PM. Despite already starting the order, she insisted they couldn't proceed because they had been working since 6 AM and needed to leave. I understand wanting to close on time, but refusing to complete an order that had already begun--just minutes before closing--is unacceptable. While I was discussing delivery details with another staff member, she turned away and started muttering under her breath. I've never encountered such discourteous behavior in a customer-facing role. It's hard to understand how a business can thrive with this kind of attitude toward customers.

When used as a platform to vent, bash and bring others down, Yelp disgusts me. However, when utilized as a way to help others to discover goods and services that could have quite easily gone unnoticed or to reward those who deserve praise, Yelp- more often that not- inspires me. Today, because it was through Yelp that I was originally able to realize that Cattails was a shop capable of exceeding expectations, I have been motivated to inform others that such an amazing little flower shop indeed does exist. A friend of mine who is planning her wedding and suddenly found herself the foremost expert on floral shops in Chicago first told me of Cattails' actuality. Naturally, I turned to Yelp to confirm her suggestion that Cattails was the florist for me. What I found was exactly what I had hoped to find, sparkling reviews regarding both customer service and the overall quality of the product that they put out. This review is far, far from contradictory. As a man I have come to understand two things: 1. Flowers on Valentine's Day are an integral component to ensuring peace and tranquility between you and your girlfriend/spouse/whatever. 2. I know absolutely nothing about flowers. I know that they look pretty/ smell great and that their power over the opposite sex is something that even modern science is incapable of understanding, but beyond that my knowledge of flora is ultimately lackluster. I know not the names of all flowers or when to find that certain varieties are in season. Fortunately, understanding #2 was not a problem with Cattails. My order was as simple as giving them a call, setting a ballpark price that I felt comfortable with, suggesting that there be a presence of "yellowness" in the arrangement, but otherwise agreeing to give them full creativity over the assortment, and communicating my credit card information (a process which took no more than five minutes). When I heard the excited tone on the other end of the line, I knew I had made the right choice. Ultimately, the bouquet that had arrived at my doorstep was far more beautiful than I could have ever tried to construct myself. Thank you Cattails. You have not only made this Valentine's Day one to remember, you have made me look like a guy who "gets it" and one who will certainly be a returning customer.
