As a server in the restaurant industry I have, shall we say, somewhat of an on-again, off-again relationship with Yelp. When used as a platform to vent, bash and bring others down, Yelp disgusts me. However, when utilized as a way to help others to discover goods and services that could have quite easily gone unnoticed or to reward those who deserve praise, Yelp- more often that not- inspires me. Today, because it was through Yelp that I was originally able to realize that Cattails was a shop capable of exceeding expectations, I have been motivated to inform others that such an amazing little flower shop indeed does exist. A friend of mine who is planning her wedding and suddenly found herself the foremost expert on floral shops in Chicago first told me of Cattails' actuality. Naturally, I turned to Yelp to confirm her suggestion that Cattails was the florist for me. What I found was exactly what I had hoped to find, sparkling reviews regarding both customer service and the overall quality of the product that they put out. This review is far, far from contradictory. As a man I have come to understand two things: 1. Flowers on Valentine's Day are an integral component to ensuring peace and tranquility between you and your girlfriend/spouse/whatever. 2. I know absolutely nothing about flowers. I know that they look pretty/ smell great and that their power over the opposite sex is something that even modern science is incapable of understanding, but beyond that my knowledge of flora is ultimately lackluster. I know not the names of all flowers or when to find that certain varieties are in season. Fortunately, understanding #2 was not a problem with Cattails. My order was as simple as giving them a call, setting a ballpark price that I felt comfortable with, suggesting that there be a presence of "yellowness" in the arrangement, but otherwise agreeing to give them full creativity over the assortment, and communicating my credit card information (a process which took no more than five minutes). When I heard the excited tone on the other end of the line, I knew I had made the right choice. Ultimately, the bouquet that had arrived at my doorstep was far more beautiful than I could have ever tried to construct myself. Thank you Cattails. Cattails flowers are perfection. Lisa, the owner, was amazing. She completely understood my vision. She was a dream and a joy to work with. The end products were amazing that is why I have posted a million photos of her work. I wanted bright blue roses which she totally delivered on with blue irises and she added sparkle throughout!!! The flowers were magically and they totally popped. The corsages for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom were super gorgeous. I'm sorry that I can't remember what kind they are they were a white lily with purple blooming from the center. and the bridesmaids were blue bouquets with white roses. OMG!!!! What a lovely shop! They just relocated to fullerton and used to be in Wicker Park. The flowers here are so beautiful. I had a beautiful arrangement made as a gift here. When I walked in, I gave a price range and told them who the flowers were for and a few minutes later, I was presented with an amazing arrangement. Besides flowers, they have candles, vases and other small gift items here. They are pet friendly and pet lovers! This is not the place to go if you are looking for decently priced cut flowers to spruce up your place. The prices are way too high. It's not worth it for something that will die in a few days. In the summer, go to a local farmer's market instead. Cattails always intimidated me...though I always thought every flower was fresh and so beautiful, I never thought I'd be able to find an affordable bouquet in here. Then one day, in a pinch, I stopped in. I used Cattails for my wedding and was happy with everything. I didn't use flowers for anything beyond the girls and my bouquets, so it is a limited experience as far as many weddings go. I have no idea about flowers but Lisa looked at pictures I brought and walked me through a couple of her books and got a sense for what I wanted without asking me to tell her exactly what I wanted (because I couldn't). Sounds simple but I really appreciated it as it's not the experience I had with others. She was always nice and responsive to email. If you know your budget, or know what you DON'T want to spend, that's pretty much all she needs to get going. And she puts it out there. Everyone's afraid to talk about money, so she just goes, "Tell me what you're looking to spend, and we'll make it work." And then you go, "Sweet! So can I get them in like, negative 15 minutes? In vases? And purple?" I could hear the calm, relaxed smile over the phone, when she politely chuckled, "No problem!" I picked up my arrangements about an hour later, totally transportable in these sweet cardboard, trapezoid pyramid thingys (also awesome). She helped me with them and had I wanted to ask, probably would've told me what exactly it was that I ordered. They looked gorgeous, different...crazy! Cattails is definitely a little on the pricey side, so just be prepared for that should you decide to go there. They usually have a pretty interesting and ever changing stock of flowers, and they are ridiculously friendly. They are always knowledgeable about their product and they do fabulous top notch arrangements. It should be noted that this is a dog friendly business as well, so you can swing by while on a walk! I lived across the street from Cattails for a couple of years , and I would buy 4-6 times a year. It was a life saver at times. The owner is super awesome. What they do is beyond amazing. Cattails is located down the street and I often browse the shop, which has a varied assortment of fresh flowers and potted plants. On occasion, I'll but fresh flowers for the house and find the staff to be very helpful in assisting in selecting the appropriate flowers. Last week I called and ordered flowers over the phone for delivery to a friend for her birthday. It was somewhat apprehensive about selecting flowers over the phone without seeing them in person, but decided to do because I've had good luck with Cattails in the past. The employee on the phone asked some basic questions (e.g., preference for traditional flowers or something more unique, personality of the recipient) and took care of the rest. There was a nominal delivery charge and the flowers were delivered that afternoon. My friend absolutely loved the flowers... and was also touched that I remembered her birthday. If your looking for basic, traditional flowers like carnations this is likely not the place for you... but for colorful, unique arrangements provided by a local independently-owned business, I'd highly recommend it. read more

Cattails has a great selection of flowers and beautiful vases to go with (since I bought orchids with a vase), but as many have said, don't expect to have a little gas money saved up. For the orchids I bought, plus vase, was almost $30. I didn't really mind paying that much, they were beautiful and considering the person I was buying them for, it didn't matter much to me. But for some, it might. Other than that, the shop is small, but they have quite the selection. I wouldn't say an enormous amount, but enough to pick and choose. I am probably going to be Cattails new best customer! Okay, actually what I mean is, I will convince my husband to become their new best customer :) Yesterday after Easter brunch, I was at a loss as to where I would be able to find a bouquet of flowers to cheer up a friend who had just lost a grandparent and needed a serious pick me up. I should have planned ahead and gotten flowers the day before, but just moving into a new home my mind was completely unorganized. I strolled down Division and as I kept passing all the small boutiques closed, started feeling like I was out of luck. But no! Cattails was open - On Easter Sunday, no less - from 10 to 3. Perfect!! I don't order flowers often, and never in person. I generally do it for business purposes and use online shops. What a joy it was to actually help pick them out, and see the bouquet being made! I worked with Brit, who was super friendly. She was warm, calm, clearly knew tons about flowers, and enjoyable to chat with during the process. I didn't really give her a budget, just said "something really reasonable but cheery". I got 4 stems (2 pink and 2 orange) of something... maybe a tulip (kind of like the inside of a pomegranate) surrounded by greens and tiny white flowers. It was just perfect! Wrapped up in orange tissue, brown paper, tied with a string, and a local photographers card accompanied the pick me up. Not too bad for less than $25! My husband will definitely be back when he needs a get out of jail free card, and I will visit when I need more surprises for friends. Wonderful! read more

This negative review is based simply on "customer service" rather than Cattails product. My fiance and I are planning our wedding and were considering Cattails as our flower supplier. They made us reschedule our appointment not once, but twice. Also, we called them on the day of our scheduled appointments and only then did they mention we had to reschedule. This is not a professional way to work with clients PLANNING a wedding. Moreover, certainly not a way to deal with a client referred to Cattails from a major wedding venue that has them on their "preferred supplier list". Needless to say, this turned us off immediately because we considered it to be a red flag for how their customer service would be if we signed a contract. shame shame. While I wouldn't say you shouldn't use Cattails, I certainly cannot recommend or promote them either. I will also pass along my experience to the wedding venue. It's true that Cattails has some beautiful flowers (though the roses I saw were badly overblown, the selection is quite small this time of yearm and the prices are as high as any other florist I've seen in Chicago). I ended up with some amazing Dutch peonies that I'm veryry happy with. But, well, maybe I'm just spoiled, or maybe I walked in on a bad day, but the woman who "helped" me last Friday was kind of clueless. I watched her attempt to put together bouquets for me and someone else, and both of us were completely freaked out by how badly thought-through the arrangements were and ended up redoing them ourselves. Go in if you feel okay wandering around and composing your arrangement yourself or if you aren't particularly fussy about the end result, and be prepared to pay for it (my arrangement, at $46, consisted of two peonies, greenery, and one stalk of something else I forget). I wish I could recommend this place more highly, but I just can't. read more

We don't mind paying and expect to pay for quality but the small arrangement purchased for our maternity photos lasted about the duration of the shoot. Seriously, they wilted on the second day. Because of the higher price and limited life span on the arrangment we started looking at other flower shops in the area and noted they priced the exact same arrangement for 1/2 to 1/3 the price paid at Cattails! We mentioned this to our photographer when she brought the proofs and she had the same experience at Cattails and doesn't buy there anymore. Mediocre and overpriced. Although we live in the suburbs now, my husband bought flowers from Cattails recently because he had for years (we used to live in the neighborhood). They have always been a bit stingy, but this most recent bouquet was ridiculous. It would have cost less than $10 at a grocery store (yes, that was the quality of the flowers) but Cattails charged $40. Not going here again and I would not recommend to anyone. I am based in L.A. and I needed to send flowers to my brother and his wife. I was not interested in using a national retailer, because I have heard awful reviews, so I was delighted to find a business that had such great reviews on yelp. I spoke with the store owner Lisa, who was very helpful with getting me fresh, beautiful Ecuadorean roses for the bouquet. The flowers were delivered as promised, and the result was a very happy couple. The only other comment is that I asked Lisa to email me a picture of the bouquet, which she did not do.
