I walked into the store just to look around as they had flowers and I wanted to ask about custom floral arrangements. I'm not sure why but the person at the shop did not seem to want me in there. I asked about custom floral arrangements and she told me that she did sort of abruptly, not asking if I was interested or offering help. She told me there's another store down the hall that sells chips and soda, which felt like it was a "get lost" kind of attitude. My moms a landscape architect, I've been in many floral shops with her since I was a kid. Now at 25 years old I was treated like an 8 year old child who should go to the candy store down the hall. Very weird experience, and bummed because I did want to purchase some floral arrangements. read more

I called Mangel on Friday for a special piece to be delivered to Lawry's the next day. I just gave them a price range and the idea that I wanted it to look different than a typical centerpiece. I explained we were using it to surprise my very artistic MIL at her 75th birthday dinner so that when she was sat at the table this would be the first thing she noticed. And boy did she notice!!! She LOVED the flowers and everyone else admired them as well. It was a beautiful arrangement!!! I can't thank them enough and am so impressed with their ability to think outside of the FTD box. We worked with Mangel for my January wedding, Colin specifically, and they were fantastic! I had saved many photos of the type of look I was seeking with our wedding, Colin created a physical mock up (in our actual venue) and it was gorgeous. He was also very good about helping to find the line between gorgeous and practical, so that our event would not look over done. While I was excited, I was still a little nervous for the big day to see everything all together. My nerves were completely unwarranted, as the floral decor was absolutely perfect. I had an excellent experience here recently. I came in frazzled as we were doing last minute finishing touches for my Mother's Memorial service. I was introduced to Kevin who so patiently took my order that changed three times in a span of 15 minutes! He was able to order the calla lilies fresh and in a 36 hour turnaround!! At time of pickup an adorable French Bulldog greeted us, which is the Owners dog. This dog is so sweet and gentle. The lilies were stunning and having them in time for my Mother's service was incredible. The shop is located in The Drake Hotel next door to Lavazza Coffee. WOW! Cannot say enough good things about his flower shop!!! While I had used them in the past, I had a horrendous experience with 1-800-FLOWERS for a very important delivery of flowers to celebrate a 90th birthday........don't get me started on them!!!! In any case, Jill is a treasure: I called in desperation at 4:30 in the afternoon and the flowers were deliver within an hour (admittedly, 3 block away to be fair) but still, incredible! And the flowers, such a luscious arrangement in corals, peach, amber and gold: roses, alstromeria, hypericum berries and lots of other gorgeous stuff. Much, much thanks to Jill and the talented designer at Mangel's 10 stars !!!!! In Chicago and vicinity, DO NOT consider going elsewhere, you'd be crazy!!!! PS their local delivery charge is half the price of 1-800-FLOWERS and they are complete non-caring morons. read more

I was happy to find a florist in this area that is not foolishly overstraining at artistry or overpriced. Instead, this store has an excellent selection of flowers, refuses to sell flowers that seemed wilt-ready, and also possesses a quaint, pleasingly eccentric character. E.g., I'm about to head back there to buy an Edward Gorey book for my cousin's son before I head to the airport. Unprofessional, aggressive staff. I paid close to $100 for a bouquet for my friend's graduation today. When I showed it to my family, they unanimously thought it was overly large, so I went back to the store and requested a small alteration. I still don't understand why, but my request prompted an angry, aggressive reaction from a member of Mangel's staff. He forcefully threw my bouquet on the work table, swung his scissors in the air, and told me to decide where to chop off to make the flower arrangement smaller. I had made my request in a polite manner, with a smile, and I had even offered to pay an additional fee for the extra work---so, needless to say, I was very shocked. I said that I didn't want their flowers anymore and simply left. I had already paid the $100 charge, but because of the happy message and meaning that flowers are supposed to convey, I didn't want Mangel's flowers anymore. My best guess is that the man was offended that I requested an alteration to a work that he considered was already very good. I liked the arrangement; I just wanted it to be a bit smaller so that it would better suit the occasion. I hope Mangel will come to understand that the true value of their flower work comes from their customers' enjoyment, not their own opinion of how good it is. Every flower purchase had been a happy experience until today---Mangel ruined it. read more

I wanted to buy flowers for my friend who is in a show tonight, so I looked up a local place in Streeterville and checked Mangel's out since it was closest to me. I am so glad I went here! The man helping me was SO nice, and I told him I didn't know anything about flowers. He asked me my price range (I told him $30-60), which type of flowers I wanted, suggested a nice Fall theme, and before I knew it after about 5-10 minutes he put together the most beautiful and perfect arrangement! While I was waiting I checked out the little gifts in the shop and bought a cute holiday assortment of hot chocolate! I am not a big yelp reviewer, but after leaving Mangel's all I wanted to do was spread the news and tell everyone how wonderful this little spot in Drake Hotel was! My daughter had her wedding at the Drake Hotel on Dec. 30. Before we knew of Mangel's capabilities, we contracted with an outside vendor, which was the biggest mistake. Her bouquet was nothing like the picture we showed her and was already wilted when delivered. I went to Mangel's in the Drake hotel, to see if they could help, an hour and a half before pictures were to be taken. Without even showing them a picture, they reworked the bouquet using what flowers they could salvage and adding others. It was perfect and done in an hour! They were extremely busy when I came in, but realized how much the bouquet meant to my daughter and I, and didn't hesitate to help. They were absolute angels, and her bouquet was by far was the most beautiful addition to the day! I had noticed their beautiful arrangements on prior visits to the hotel, and knew I was in good hands, but did not realize how accommodating they could be. Thank you again for making her day!
