Susie's Soba is an experience to say the least. I definitely was given a primer on the owner and restaurant style and felt that I went in with eyes wide open. You definitely need to make reservations since she serves and cooks everything on her own. Suzie will steer you to certain dishes based on what she has fresh so go with her recommendations. The food is authentic and not all at the same time! I wish I had taken pictures of our meal! I definitely will next time! read more

Suzie's Soba has been a Korean staple in Hampden since 1998. If you don't notice the inside artsy decor or cozy outdoor seating in back with beaucoup de plants, you could be forgiven, if you walk on by. But the decor and outside landscape--and the food--bear the stamp of owner Suzie. And Suzie will definitely (defiantly?) go down as a true Baltimore restaurant character. It's easy to pass by this local treasure without realizing the true Korean food you can savor inside. I have been re-visiting this place, having experienced a typical noodle lunch in the cozy outside a few weeks ago, and inside on this cool night. And so: Tonight I could only eat half of the seasonal special melt-in-your-mouth, spicy (to taste) Korean short rib with potatoes and carrots with white rice. I can't tell you how delicious this seasoned meat was! (Note: This special takes 20 mins to prepare, so call ahead before you visit.) I also enjoyed a hot mug of Gin Ma Cha or roasted rice green tea. Just so much character and fun! Make sure you call before going or else you may be turned away. We went at 6 and there was nobody else there, and we were treated to first class sass and great service. The food was also really nice, but a little pricey. We ordered the donburi, beef shabu shabu, and chicken pad Thai. All dishes were seasoned well (shabu was slightly too salty) but really complex and nice. Will definitely be back. read more

It's not kids friendly at all. We had to leave the restaurant because her rudeness was absurd. I hate to leave bad reviews even after experienced one because I really hate to hurt someone's business. But how we were treated was not okay. She basically verbally abused us because we brought a kid. This is absolutely my favorite spot in Hampden for lunch OR dinner! Suzie is an absolute force and her talent in the kitchen and charming wit makes any meal so so amazing. If you're only able to make it to one restaurant on the street I'd recommend this one. We had dinner at Suzie's for the first time a few weeks ago and had a wonderful time. Suzie has been in Hampden for more than 20 years, and she is a character. She helped us order (we ordered a few dishes, and Suzie made some suggestions for better pairings) and entertained us throughout. It's definitely Suzie's shop; she's the owner, the chef, the waitress! It feels personal to eat at her restaurant. I'm not sure if Suzie is seating people inside right now, when we went for dinner we asked to sit on the patio, and I didn't see anyone seated inside. But the patio is lovely. Suzie has planted some gorgeous plants out there, and it's very private and quiet and charming. On a pretty day, this patio is a dream. Based on Suzie's suggestions, we ended up trying the steamed chicken dumplings, the cold cucumber salad, and the chicken soba (with scallions, broccoli, carrots, snow peas, and a spicy-ish sauce). Everything was delicious, and I definitely didn't regret letting Suzie talk us into some different dishes. I really enjoyed our meal here. Immediately upon walking in I knew I'd love this place. The atmosphere and decor are so inviting and intriguing, the place looks straight out of a fairytale. The food is PHENOMENAL, a large range of absolutely delicious meals and drinks, all very reasonably priced (we got four dishes and two cocktails for less than $40). Suzie herself is the standout part of this experience though; she's absolutely hilarious! I'll tell you, her humor is very dry and straightforward, so I see how some people view her as rude, but she gives some great back and forth banter while still providing wonderful service. I was craving noodles for my birthday and saw here a menu that peaked my interest. WOW. First, Suzie is a one woman show - she cooked, she took our order, she did everything! After having 3 tables more people tried to come in but she told them there was a wait. The biggest thing about coming here is that you're on Suzie's time - and I'm 100% happy with that. The food (and her amazing personality) was well worth the wait (it wasn't even that long!) I started with the Shimp Shu-Mai - perfectly light and bouncy with the wrapper being amazingly cooked. My main was The Pan Fried Soba with Pork - the Sauce CLUNG to the noodles in ways that I wish every place I went to did. It was a generous portion with tons of protein and veggies Suzie was a bit quiet at first - but then her personality completely blossomed throughout the night and was so friendly and sweet - always chatting to her tables and making jokes. So, we haven't eaten there in a long time even though we live in the neighborhood. Now I remember why. We wanted the pan fried dumplings. Susie came to the table and asked why. Well, because they're on the menu and we like them. No, she said. Not healthy. You can have steamed. So we unhappily ate very soggy dumplings. My wife liked her spicy seafood noodles, but my pan fried soba wasn't pan fried. When I complained a bit to our server, he said, Well, they were in a pan. Same server forgot our wine, which they didn't have anyway. So we drank something else that was probably just as bad. Also, no dessert. We send people down the street, he said, for ice cream. Wow! This place was legit! I would definitely recommend it to friends. I've been in this area of Baltimore so many times I can't believe this was my first time trying it out, somehow I have overlooked this place. The Korean food is on point and Suzie helped me pick what I wanted to eat on a day when I was being indecisive. The food portions are perfect sized and don't leave you hungry! The owner is funny and comes off as a little intense but is friendly. I can understand that some people don't understand her but she had me cracking up. She is straight to the point and means business if she doesn't know you. Make a reservation, you'll be so pleased you did! We walked into the cozy dining room and "chef" greeted us quickly. She started us with the cleanest-tasting kimchi I've ever had. (I know "clean" is not a meaningful food adjective but she ruined me for the ones I buy at my local Asian market). I stated a preference but followed my friend's lead in asking to defer to her. she asked a few quick questions and then put heaven on the table. First a fried pork and cabbage...cutlet? Not sure of the correct name but know devouring it quickly was the only right option. The seafood hot pot included perfectly cooked mussels, shrimp, scallops, and other delicacies. The accompanying rice bowl was plentiful. With a drive ahead of me, I missed out on trying a martini. My friend had two. So, yes, you can have a mixed drink with your meal. Given the ambience, personal attention from chef, two mixed drinks, and brilliant meal; the $80-ish check was well *below* my expectation. WILL GO BACK FIRST CHANCE I GET. read more

Back at this place just a few weeks ago. We brought our guests visiting Baltimore from out of town since we really like their food and we wanted them to be able to try it. When we arrived, the place was empty (I'm not surprised since the last couple of times we were there, it was never busy) - we were seated and given the menu. Not even 3 minutes after, here comes Suzie and her attitude. Suzie needs to learn how to treat her customers well. She was rude to us and our visiting guests. I was really embarassed! Her questions made sense but her delivery is really bad. Bad as in 'What the hell is your problem???' She was snarky and I honestly wonder how in the world is the place able to stay open. We got our food and ate in peace without her presence. We've decided to try to enjoy our dinner despite the earlier scenario. A few minutes later - we heard her yelling (in another language) at her poor cook/assistant. It was really loud and unnecessary. Sighhhh. We just wanted to relax, have a good conversation over dinner with our friends. The good thing is that we were almost done with our food and we can leave the place soon!! We've gone to her restaurant several times because the food is good. We would skip other Hampden restaurants and eat here. After that night I'm not sure if we're ever coming back. Be warned Yelpers. I discovered this place about a month ago. It's phenomenal! I ordered my typical Pad Kee Mao/Drunken Noodles, crab dumplings (a must have), and Chap Cheh/Japchae. All were flavorful and the portions were larger than the other 2 Thai restaurants in Hamden. When picking up the food, the staff politely greeted me and seems to know her typical customers. Food is prepared with care and the portions are generous. We came in tonight in a group of 5 and the owner Suzie greeted us with a smile and welcomed us to a table. She cracked some jokes with us on the way to the table as she usually does and made us all feel at home. We've frequented Suzie's several times before so we knew what to expect. I know her humor may be off-putting to some people but I don't mind it at all. She takes no crap and we don't give her any haha. My favorite things from here are the fried crab dumplings and the cold spicy sesame noodles. The noodle dish is a far cry from upscale and partly why I enjoy it so much. It's made up simple ingredients such as spicy pepper flakes, cilantro, diced carrots, sesame seeds and soy. It actually reminds me of a spicy Korean noodle dish called "bibim gooksu" that my mom makes for me every time I visit her. She humbly claims that some of her noodles dishes such as the pho are not authentic, which alas are not for the noodle elitist but most all the noodle dishes I've tried are decent in my opinion. The intricate and playful decor is mostly all hand-made by a talented artist so take a gander around while you're waiting for your food. In the summer time I absolutely love sitting in the outdoor area that is surrounded by lush greens and smallish patio tables. It's perfect for a low-key date or a girls' get-together. It's usually just Suzie playing the show by herself on any regular night but sometimes she has help taking orders and running food so if you're short on time I wouldn't suggest going there. Decided to stop in today The noodles and things on the window caught my attention so why not?? I went in looked around. The cook didn't say anything to us initially so we continued to look around at everything in store because there's so much shit everywhere. She finally walks over and asks if we wanted to order and my bf asked where the menu was so the cook said it's over there(pointing to the entrance where the menu is.) I began to look thru and my bf walks back across the restaurant to look around and rudely and very loudly the cook says "you gonna order or not" then mumbles something else. This is the first time i was addressed soo rudely in an establishment. She acted as if she didn't like having black folks in her restaurant. One of the strangest dining experiences I've ever had. When I walked in the place was dark and empty and I asked if they were open. The woman, who seem to be the owner, said you had to call ahead and make a reservation. I was about to walk out when she said "is it just you?" I said it was and she said I could stay. I ordered shumai and edamame. The food was OK, nothing special, but fine. She on the other hand was decidedly bizarre. She asked me very rude personal questions, told me she had no ice because the soda was cold, everything was cold, her machine had broken years ago and she never fixed it. She was proud that she convinced people to have drinks without ice for all that time. She then told me how to eat my food, actually pulling the dishes away from me and moving them around so that I was eating in the proper way. I am usually a very generous tipper but for maybe the second time in my life, when I paid the bill I didn't leave a tip. I made up for it at dinner later at the prime rib. read more

Nah - no way. Not no more. Suzie's has hit the skids, friends. Mostly empty, one poor lady behind the counter handling the cooking, greeting and table service. The fresh ingredients that used to be around are no longer in evidence. Neither does the menu have the good stuff I used to like to order. Plopped down at a slightly sticky table, waited for a bit. Observed all the other tables still sitting with menus and no food, and the impatient faces. At that point, decided to just cut my losses and find another lunch spot. I'm not sure how this place stays open. I went for an anniversary dinner on a Saturday evening. Though we were on the earlier side, we were literally the only couple in the restaurant. The waitress seated us and since it was supposed to be a romantic occasion, I slid my chair a little closer to my boyfriend. I was immediately scolded by the waitress who told me I was blocking the way (I wasn't) for the other customers (of which there were exactly none.) I asked if I could just move back over if anyone else came and she said no. The rude service continued on for the entire meal. The waitress wouldn't let us order what we wanted on multiple occasions and mocked me when I asked whether the tofu was steamed or fried. The food was just eh and the highlight was the tempura banana for dessert-- but really-- how would you mess that up anyway? I'd like to return to try Suzie's again because the menu does have so many good vegetarian options and its walking distance from my house, but would need a different server for sure! I don't buy overpriced noodles so I can be insulted over dinner... BTW: They have an adorable little garden patio which is a plus because outdoor dining in Hampden can be hard to come by. I had been here a couple of times and always enjoyed the food, although a bit expensive. Suzie has always been a bit saucy but never mean to me. Today, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in for a snack. Like other reviewers noted, there was only one other couple in the restaurant during the lunch rush, so her treatment of us was absolutely uncalled for. We ordered the Tuna Tartar (I'd had it before and it's delicious) and the Korean fried pancakes. It seems like Suzie became irritated with us after she learned we weren't ordering an entree because after we placed the order, she gave us this look and said "That's IT??" She ripped our menus off the table and stormed into the kitchen. Came back a few minutes later and told us she was out of the dumplings. I suspect that she didn't think it was worth her time because they were only 5 dollars. She came out a few minutes later and put the Tuna Tartar in front of us and plopped the chopsticks next to it instead of giving me my chopsticks and my boyfriend his. She didn't utter another word to us until it was time to pay. Meanwhile, she starts chatting with the other couple about tofu. I believe that since they both ordered entrees, they were receiving preferential treatment. Anyway, we finished and she yelled to us from the behind the corner "If you're ready to pay, you can come up to the counter." No....'How was the food' or 'Thanks for coming'...nothing. Regardless, the tuna tartar was good, but I will never, ever go back. There are a lot more restaurants in Baltimore to support who actually appreciate your business. read more

I'm a little shocked at the poor reviews. I love Suzie's Soba and eat here allll the time. First, I can say that Suzie is a bit of a character. She might rib on you a bit. So I guess her personality isn't appreciated by all--and certainly not for the thin skinned who can't take a joke. But underneath that harsh exterior is actually a very warm person. The first time I ordered, I got take out. When she told me it would take 20 minutes, I was a little put off and she replied "What! This ain't no McDonald's." (This is what I am referring to and what others might consider as rude) But boy was she right! She makes her food from fresh ingredients. Everything I've had is absolutely delicious. I usually go when I'm under the weather and I don't even bother looking at the menu. I just ask her to fix me up something good and she delivers every time. I have never had bad service as Suzie usually sets us up nice and you can tell she's an institution in the neighborhood as she knows everyone and their back story (she grilled my boyfriend one time I took him there, but afterwards told me she approved). The place is decorated very beautifully and when there is nice weather, there is patio seating with real fruit trees and pretty lighting. It's great for a romantic date or take out. read more

Suzy's was completely unexpected. It's very unassuming from the small storefront, which features giant neon lips sexily slurping up a noodle. My husband and I wanted to get out for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and had been curious about Suzy's. When you walk in, you see a Marilyn Monroe sculpture, a deli case full of veggies, a bowl of jellybeans, and tons of natural (thick vines) natural decor. We went out to the patio, which was simply an incredible space. So many lush, green plants including an Asian pear tree in the corner. There was some fantastic reuse art -- old bombs or oxygen tanks (they look like the ones in The Hurt Locker, if you've seen that movie) as a giant bell on my right, and a flamingo made of old farm machinery parts. Apparently the farmer just welded those together and sold them at a Hampden store. I will say that there was only one person working there (serving and cooking). She was a little bit abrupt, or maybe just very head-in-the-clouds, or perhaps just odd. She whistled while she walked around, wasn't responsive, wasn't friendly, and did odd things to get my attention (like place an empty "to go" box on the dirty plate I'd just eaten from). We liked her though :) The food was tasty, albeit a little expensive. It was $15 for a humongous plate of pad thai (made without fish sauce for us vegetarians, but not without a little bit of mocking). $3 for tea, and $5 for 4 tasty, hot pan-fried vegetable dumplings. I think the expensive-factor is why Suzy's was quite empty. It was lunchtime, but there were only 3 other patrons there (one group). For me, the coolest thing about Suzy's was the decor, particularly all the art from reused objects woven through the outdoor seating. read more

Unexpected yet perfect outside seating! We were walking around Hampden last night trying to find a good spot to have dinner outside. Grano's, a few doors down, was packed but Suzies Soba had plenty of tables available right at 7 pm (including the cute back patio area!) The menu has lots of options but we stuck to the traditional Pad Thai and Pho for dinner. Both dishes were delicious and I will certainly be back soon. Why not 5 stars? Service was friendly but not especially attentive. No refills and the server only came to the table three times. 1. Take order. 2. Deliver food. 3. Deliver the Check. I'll admit it - I'm hooked on Suzie's Soba. Every visit I try something new and everything visit I leave looking forward to my next visit. While her eggplant dish is by far my favorite item on the menu, all of the noodle dishes have been outstanding. I also enjoy that every thing is clearly made to order so while this won't be the quickest lunch it's one of the freshest. Also have to say that in multiple trips here I have never had an issue with Suzie. She might not be super warm and bubbly but she's welcoming and efficient. Last time I was there with my 10wk old daughter to meet a co-worker for lunch, and Suzie was great at making us feel welcome. She also made it clear that if the little one also needed to have lunch that it wasn't an issue - which is HUGE considering the nasty looks and comments I've gotten. Came on a Friday lunch in September with 2 friends at 1pm; we were the only souls in the place. We sat out back on the patio, which was nice due to the day and weather, and each got our own thing. Usually I prefer to share food with everyone around, but that wasn't really the vibe that was going on that day. My friends got a pad thai with shrimp and another vegetarian noodle option (can't find menu online) and I had the spicy cold noodles. I have an aversion to paying more than $10 for noodles, unless I can watch them being made before my eyes --and I mean, with the pile of flour and egg and pulling and stringing and pulling and slicing and boiling--not putting hard noodles in a vat of water. I assume these were the latter; it is hard to tell with a thin noodle. So mine was around $8 which was reasonable. But the noodles were not to be ordered again. If I were to pick out the flavors, I would note super-thin vermicelli, Srachi sauce, slivers of jalapenos, and slivers of cucumbers, and red pepper flakes. That was about all. I didn't care much, since I was there to talk shop (it's a good private place for that; waiter doesn't bother you at all), but I have to say, it isn't a place I will likely return to.
