So I thought if the service is this awful the food must be great.... nahhhhhhhhh the pounded yam was spoilt literally spoil. The egusi soup was watery and so was the palm butter sauce not to mention they both did not taste good. Definitely not authentic. Drove all the way from NH to Boston to get food from there and was super disappointed when I tasted the food. Bought about $130 worth of takeaway and not a single one of them was good. The oxtail pepper soup was ok but the egusi soup, okra, pan butter, jollof, oxtail pepper soup (the pepper soup was not that bad after adding pepper and maggi) were all plain old nasty. Maybe they were having a bad day who knows. Was definitely a waste of $$$$$. I do not recommend at all. Oh the jollof was bland. They literally dumped steamed goat meat on top of the jollof. Crappy customer service. I mean, I'm not even mad; I suppose I deserve the bad treatment for choosing to patronize the business of my fellow countrymen. I came in with a friend and we did not get a menu until 30 MINUTES LATER. I had to literally wave a waiter to get us one, while other patrons (most of them Caucasian, but I mean, they are stereotypically known to tip really well, so they deserve VIP service while we 'regular' Africans don't, right? Hahaha) that came in after us were already been given menus, had their orders taken, and their foods coming out already! So yes, he finally brings us a menu, and proceeds to disappear, while we patiently wait for another 15 TO 20 MINUTES, before I and my friend decided to preserve whatever dignity left in us and leave the establishment. But hey it's all good, them white folks deserve better customer service than us right? I mean, losing two customers like me and my friend won't hurt the business. So yeah, it's all good. I'm writing this review pretty much right after being there - it was a bad experience and I want to warn other people. My Nigerian friend wanted us to check out a Nigerian place to change things up. I'm always down to try out different foods, so I was pretty excited to go. Food was decent. The suya was pretty flavorful and really good. The stockfish was SUPER SPICY (to me) - the spiciness stayed in my mouth for a good several minutes. I think the kind of pepper in Nigerian cuisine brings out a different kind of spicy than the kind I'm used to. I ended up not eating most of it. I got egusi stew with goat and farina fufu. It was interesting. Though it was strange eating food without chewing, I enjoyed trying something new. My Nigerian friend didn't like the way they made their food, but I'm not an expert on that. The real problem was the service. I don't know why, but the waitress treated us badly from near the start. Maybe because we were a group of college students. I've never been disrespectful at a restaurant, and I always give 20% tips, but I guess there's some kind of stereotype. I'll expand on the details. We asked for more water, and the waitress said sure and took the little jug. She never came back with water. We asked another waitress who was walking by and she also said sure. Then she went over to the bar and just started chatting with people instead. After it had been a good 30 minutes since we had first asked for more water, one of my friends was fed up and just walked over to the bar and ended up bringing water back to the table herself. My friend had ordered a palm wine from the menu - $6. Apparently they had run out of the small $6 ones and only had large $12 bottles left - so they gave her a $12 bottle without telling her beforehand, and just added that to the receipt. What? Why would you do that without telling her? Before that, one of my other friends asked what the wine's alcoholic content was, so the waitress grabbed the bottle and looked at it for a good minute. She told us "probably 5-6%?" Then she changed her mind and said "actually I think that one is non-alcoholic." The one who had ordered it told her that she had wanted the alcoholic one. The waitress said "oopsies" and walked away. She came back a few minutes later and said "actually that one is 40%." That was a BLATANT lie. None of us could even feel anything from drinking it. I don't know what the waitress was thinking. The worst thing is that while she was neglecting us, we could hear her doing everything she could for the old white couple next to us. She sat down and spent time going over things with them and making sure they were enjoying themselves. It was a stark contrast to how she treated us. Whenever she came by us and asked if we needed anything, if we actually asked for something her smile would drop and she'd give us side-eye as she walked away. I don't even know what to think of her behavior - it was beyond me why she'd be rude to us when we didn't do anything to her. The last thing I had a problem with was the automatic gratuity. It was my mistake for not noticing it until my friend mentioned it later on, and for tipping on top of it when I signed - but encouraging double tipping is slimy behavior at a restaurant IMO. Maybe she added it on because she was afraid we weren't going to tip after how she treated us. I'm not that kind of person, and I had wanted to get out of there ASAP, so I sadly fell into the double-tipping trap. It'll teach me to look harder at my receipts. She didn't give me a copy of the receipt, and didn't ask if I wanted one before she walked away. She didn't say thank you or anything polite. When she came back to the register and saw we were still there (we were waiting on Lyft), she looked at us and said "bye," as if to tell us that she wanted us to leave. I was thrilled to leave and I will never come back. tl;dr - Honestly I suggest staying clear of this place, but if you go anyway... Don't be surprised if you get inattentive servers, especially if you're a college student who doesn't fit in. Look closely at the receipt to avoid double-tipping. Service was awesome, friendly. A+ Ambiance is casual, not dark or bar like. Not romantic. Family-ish. Which is fine. Just don't expect a trendy hang out or bar. Food was good and enjoyable but not great/amazing. We tried a stewed plate of beef with jollof rice(think Mexican rice) which comes with fried plantains as well(Not too greasy, great job). As well we tried two of the Nigerian stews. They allow two stews (We chose egusi and efro riro) in one order so that is what we did. Plenty of food for two. I was SOOOO looking forward to going to this place after having homemade jollof rice. Ever since, I've been craving Nigerian food and was so happy to come across this place. A nice, spacious restaurant that is located about a block away from Dudley Station. I ordered the jollof rice with goat. Goat was amazing, very good and tender. The beef that came with the jollof rice was dry and not as tender as I was hoping. My friend got the stewed chicken which was pretty good. Jollof rice was requested spicy, but it didn't come out spicy, and I added dry hot spices into my rice, which made up for it, but it wasn't the same. Service was very good. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I would like to give this place another try, but not sure when as I'm not dying to go back. read more

Good food and service. Only complaint is that my party ended up tipping twice due to the waitress neglecting to tell us a 15% was already included. Apparently they charge 15% tip for a party of 3 and 18% for parties of 5 or more. Would definitely be more transparent about this. If I want to tip ~35% i shouldn't be tricked into it. read more

Ordered takeout on a whim, and oh my, I had no idea food could be this delicious. Stumbled upon this restaurant when I was searching for goat stew, and ended up ordering their snapper entree instead. Fish was so fresh, and the flavor was an alchemy of peppers, onions, ginger, and other savory notes. I'm not well versed in Nigerian cuisine, but if you like complex, savory, beautifully orchestrated stews, this is your go-to. Then, there's their moi moi. If I had to eat one food and only one food for the rest of my life, I'd gladly choose Suya joint's moi moi. Again, it's the flavor in every bite that's just so beautifully balanced. Not greasy or salty, just savory where every bite tastes of savory pepper and onion deliciousness. Chicken suya is delicious. Beef version a little tough, but the chicken was cooked to that sweet spot where it's completely cooked but not at all dry. And again, the flavor!!! Peanut, ginger, and a medley of spices that enhanced without overpowering. Note: I LOVE spicy food, and the spicy version of the suya was intense. Delicious but only order it spicy if you can handle the heat. :) Heard rumors on yelp the service in person could be more attentive. Planning to go there for a sit-down meal later this month with a friend, but my experience with 3 delivery orders thus far has been on point (food delivered 1.5 miles away within 45 min). Will update once I can speak to the restaurant experience in addition to delivery. Still haven't tried the goat - keep getting distracted by so many other options. :) read more

So here's the thing, as a Nigerian American for me personally, this place is just ok, I've had better so my review may be a little bias. However, I feel like the food here is declining. First time I came here (at their old Roslindale location), the meat pie and suya always kept me coming back for more, I was hooked. Most recently though in their Dudley location, everything was cold and dry. I don't know if it was because I came for a larger birthday dinner and had to pre order my food before I got there but it just wasn't doing it for me. I love my food piping hot so if my food is just a little cool, it's a problem. Their meat pie and suya just didn't taste the same from how it was before and I make better rice and stew so I think they can step it up just a little bit, especially since it's like the only Nigerian restaurant in Boston. I adore Suya Joint and would come here every weekend if I could. In lieu of this, I have come back about 6 times since I discovered it about 8 months ago. Delicious Nigerian stews with your choice of meat (chicken, goat, beef, or fish) and whole wheat, yam or cassava fufu. I've brought new friends with me on each trip, and everyone has approved, regardless of the type of stew. My favorite is the egusi (soup with melon seeds), but other favorites are the okra stew and taushe (groundnut / peanut stew). They have Star, Gulder and Tusker beers if you're feeling nostalgic - and palmwine! Great way to warm up on cold winter nights. read more

I asked for peppered snails to go, and was very disappointed with what I got. I was served left-over peppered snails that had been re-heated way too many times. I know what those taste like, because I have had freshly made ones as well as snails that were made one week prior and warmed everyday until they were bought...which was exactly what you served me today. This isn't the first time I have received bad service from this place. One time I went with my cousin, there was lipstick on the glass she was given. Another time I went with my friends, the waitress gave herself a 20% tip as part of the bill without telling us. My disappointment today was so bad, I had to create a yelp account. Friends come to gather, chat, and you are treated like an individual with a story and background, not just am customer to be pushed put the door. And I forced Adewale to come along. It was a very bad idea. Not everything should be blamed on the pandemic pthoo! Most basic, tasteless and did I mention the price exploitation. Adewale was served bones...yes, the bare bones that go for $1.50/pound for kurikuri soup. Certainly not whole food bones. "Fresh Okra Soup" is $18...to mean chopped and looked like sauteed. But that is not the issue; when you order the okra soup, you pay for individual items in teh okra soup too? Ok. How about we just order okra soup without the ingredients? Are they not what makes Okra soup? Make small portions of delicious food that justifies the prive. Not the heaps of tasteless cheap;y bought and made unhealthy stuff. Tambo Kitchen is a better option for that Okra food. Asmara, or even Karibu Restaurant will satisfy my African Cravings for now...throw in Brazilian. read more

Drove an hour to get here as I had been craving Suya and can not find in my area. Walk in and 2 waitress stare at us rather than greet and seat. After 5 min we are finally approached and sat. Order food and drinks. Drinks did not come to table for 10 min. Mind you there was only one other person in dining room. The bathroom was full of fruit flies which made me a little nervous. What's the kitchen like? Food came and food was good. I was a little disappointed with the meat pie but other than that Suya was great. Jallof rice was good, but not as good as my mother's ;) Prices were ok for the dishes but not great. Overall food was ok but did not think it was worth the $70 I spent. Especially since service was one star. Next time I will be getting take out, if there is a next time. read more

So you can't expect to get accurate information from the website? Is that too much to ask? Why wait till someone gets to the restaurant to tell them that dine-in has ended ? So the person should either go back to where they're coming from empty handed or buy take out? What the actual hell is wrong with Nigerians ? I tried this place because it just won a Best in Boston award for best African food. While I haven't tried a lot of African food to be able to compare it to, I felt in general that the food just wasn't that good. We started off with the sampler platter and the meat pies (similar to an empanada) were really dry, the suya was incredibly spicy and oily. The moi-moi was my favorite but still a bit flavorless. For main course I got the okra stew with fish which I really liked but it was very gooey almost like there was raw egg in it so I felt somewhat sickly eating it after a while. My boyfriend got the jollof rice with beef which was really good bc of the red sauce it is served with. Lastly I got an old fashioned which on the menu was described as having muddled oranges and cherries in it but am pretty sure it was just mixed with some OJ and seemed really light on the alcohol.
