Brazilian waxes are always awkward experiences, but the one here wasn't all that bad. One reviewer mentioned that she had to hold her own leg and pull up her tummy. That wasn't a big deal to me. Ive been to other places that asked me to pull at my stomach a bit because it'll be a bit less painful. -1 star because she went over the same spots a few times and it really started to hurt when she did that. Her gloves also got stuck on my skin because of the wax and so that was also a bit irritating. -1 star for the wax not being absolutely clean. I still found some strays left. She definitely needed to tweeze them out. +.5 star for the warm towel at the end of clean things off. Nice touch. So 3.5 stars. Rounded down because I've had better overall experiences elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend and I was deciding where to go to get my nails done for my senior ball (prom). We decided going here. My hands is always short (nervous habit) finger nails, so I get the acrylic nails. I wanted to match the ball dress (navy dress), so I got dark blue tips. Very small place when you go there, But when you get your fingers done, the nails doesn't break till it reaches the 3-4 weeks, pretty good. It did chip and the nail polish was washing away on the first day (probably because I was playing around with my fingers; didn't have my nails done for a while -- wasn't used to it). My FAVORITE spot in the world, Grand Nails, by Lakeshore in Oakland, is a 5 star joint. Sutter nails is 3 star because they are missing #3 and #4, which might not matter as much to some. To let you judge for yourself, I paid $55 for a shellac mani and reg pedi. I'm used to paying $40 (which is why I will sometimes drive all the way to Oakland to get my nails done.) But if $35 for a shellac mani sounds reasonable, then consider this place 4 stars. The real disappointment for me was the sad sad 3 stroke lotion rub in on my legs. The hand massage was slightly better, but my calves do a lot of moving on these streets! I liked 2 full minutes on each foot/leg. I was so disappointed... Anyway, moral of the story, if you're near here, it's nothing to be upset about. But for me, I'll stick to KT Nails on Polk. read more

Got my nails done on Wednesday before Thanksgiving; almost all of my nail polish chipped of my nails on Thanksgiving, guess the coating couldn't withstand cleaning and cooking. I'm sad to see so many bad reviews of this spot because I love it. I wouldn't call it rushed--I would call it efficient! But then, I'm from the East Coast so I like to stay on the go. I'm really impressed with how quickly they can do a job of the same quality of comparable spots; they take only about half the time. This is a plus for me because I'm not trying to spend an hour or more of my life on my nails every time I get them done. I want to get in, get out, and get on with the rest of my day. I've only ever been on off times, usually in the mornings during the week, and I'm sure the place gets crowded when it's busy, but the prices are very reasonable and the polish job (I do pedicures and shellac manicures) are great. It's obviously not a high end, spa-type experience, and that's reflected in the price. You'll know what you're getting as soon as you walk in. One thing that might seem silly but which I really appreciate is that I've never had them tear at my cuticles or cut them too deeply. I run into that a lot at cheaper nail spots, largely because technicians are impatient, in a hurry, or just not that careful. I hate having stinging nail beds for a few days after a brand new manicure, and that's never happened to me here. Again, I've never felt rushed while they're doing my nails. I feel like the techs work quickly because they know what they're doing, and they respect my time. The women I've encountered are friendly and one even recognized me from a few weeks before, which I was impressed by. I had such a great experience at Sutter nails today. I showed them a photo of acrylic nails that I wanted them to emulate, and the finished product turned out perfectly! I also had an amazing deluxe pedicure that was super relaxing. They spent a lot of time on massage and relaxation techniques which is super hard to find. Although the staff are quick and friendly, the cleanliness in the waxing room was repulsive. If I wasn't in a huge rush to get a Brazilian I would have walked out. The towel underneath the liner on the table had chunks of hair, wax, and blood. Like...what? I Can't believe I actually laid down on that table. I did, however, stay real still to ensure I was laying on the liner. But man, am I sorry I got a waxing done there. Now I have an itchy vagina that started about 45 minutes after the waxing. Maybe the wax was dirty? I don't know! It couldn't be from the towel, because I never touched it. But the dirty towel in an indicator that they will cut corners in cleanliness. I gave it three stars, probably too high, but I was out of the waxing room in under 15 minutes, and the staff were really sweet. They could just use some serious consideration for cleanliness. Too bad we can't do half stars on yelp. I give this no frills spot a 4.5. The prices can't be beat and I had a bikini wax and manicure in about 40 minutes total. The wax was lightening fast with no "complications" (such as busting out the tweezers). My lady got everything in one pass and the pain wasn't unbearable like with other "wax technicians". Although I always wonder what those little ladies at the shop are muttering to each other in their language, my technician had a great personality and was very friendly. First all of, The first thing that caught my eye. I noticed the ladies did not have disposable cuticle clippers that came in sanitized bags. Nor did they have disposable flip flops for the guest. So I accidentally stumbled upon this place trying to find the place next door that I had originally made an appointment for lol. Didn't even realize it wasn't the right place until my nails were almost done but I'm actually glad I came here instead. The service was great, the nail salon was clean and Mary who did my nails was very detailed and meticulous when doing my acrylic set and polish. I even accidentally messed up the polish on one nail and she fixed it without making a face or giving me attitude! Rare these days. Oh and I just walked in around 10am on a Thursday without an appointment and they took care of me right away! They're cash only but since I told them I didn't realize I was in the wrong nail salon they let me use my card without a n extra charge :) I would totally recommend this place and especially Mary if you're looking for clean, beautiful acrylic nails! After an unfortunate turn of events with Blush Nail Spa (read my review there), I called Sutter Nails a week before my sister's destination wedding to make an appointment for mani/pedis for four. I was a little concerned when I made the appointment by phone, as the voice on the other end was heavily accented and my name is difficult, but I decided to trust that everything was set. My fear was assuaged when I called the week of the wedding to add a fifth person, and they knew exactly what I was talking about. We showed up for our appointment, first customers of the day. There were four pedi chairs, and three mani stations. The nail techs were all pleasant and professional and, considering we were all fairly new to the experience, they were very helpful in choosing colors and nail shape, etc. They did push the groom, who had only wanted a pedicure, to agree to a manicure. However, they pushed only him, and I thought it was actually thoughtful of them, as they took the fact that he was the groom into account. Overall a pleasant experience. Not the best or longest-lasting mani/pedi I've ever had, but very good for the price (especially in Union Square). I definitely recommend them. read more

I work on Sutter street and I really needed to get my nails filled. So I decided to go somewhere close to work. After checking out the reviews for this place I decided - why not give it a try? They say their prices are cheap and they do a good job. So the part about them being cheap.... is not true. $25 for a fill?!?! The place I usually go to, near my home, is only $15 for a fill. Also I usually get french tips.... tack on another $10 so the total would be $35. That is more (or just the same) as getting a new set. This nail place is close to my old apt, so I went there all the time to get my nails done. A lot of gel color options compare to the other competitors in the neighborhood. I am discovering that finding the right salon is like dating. I have not found the right one yet. They do have the nice massage chairs and and foot spas but I put my feet in and the water was luke warm. Surprisingly cool. I asked for it hotter and she refilled it. Personally I think that when you are getting a mani pedi you should feel relaxed. They didn't provide me with a pillow to put my arm on so it could rest while I had it stretched across my body for the lady to get both hands. Towards the end I noticed that all the other women had pillows on their laps. The foot and leg massage was a joke. Sorry, it was just nothing but rubbing on some exfoliant and rinsing it off. The paint job was really disappointing as well. They didn't paint down to the cuticle line so it looked like the paint was a week old. After I removed the polish a week later, my nails are yellow. From researching, it's probably cheap polish with formaldehyde in it. This was my first time coming here, all the other ladies seemed like regulars and pretty happy. I tipped in advance, I was very polite but I get the impression that either they didn't like me or only treat their regulars well. Either way, I won't be coming back. This was the worst experience I ever had. Came in for a manicure and lady who did my nails was rushing so much that the entire process was done in 20 minuets. Spaces between my cuticles and nail polish was huge as it was done 2 weeks ago! There's no sign that's says they don't take credit cards! Tammy is one of the greatest nail technicians I've had in my 20 years of getting my nails done. I get acrylic nails and a gel pedicure every two weeks and she is my favorite. She is precise and makes my nails perfect every time! I'm always happy with the results and she is so sweet! I recommend making an appointment with Tammy but I've had other technicians and they have all been good. You can tell they take their time to make your nails just right and they communicate along the way to make sure you're happy. I was looking for a nail place 2 days before New Years, and this place was one of the closest to my hotel. I'd never made a better decision in my life! (YES, EVEN WHEN IT'S ABOUT NAILS!) I'm from Los Angeles, and I know our nail salons are s**t because they're trying to get in too many people within the hour. My nails end up looking like they're a few weeks old, and they chip within a few days. Most of the good salons upcharge you because, well, it's Los Angeles. So I get there late Friday evening, and there was one spot open for my gel manicure. Pearl ended up taking care of me. She is the sweetest manicurist I've ever met... AND THE BEST. Her nail polish application and skills were just beyond me. I've never seen anyone pay more attention to handling and cleaning my nails, and she made sure my cuticles were PERFECT. I wish she was in Los Angeles, because I would just hire her as my personal manicurist if I had the money. So Pearl, if you're reading this, please tell me when you're coming to LA!
