Was staying at a nearby hotel for a wedding. After calling around a few places, this was the only nail salon that wasn't busy in the timeframe I wanted to get my nails did. A short walk later, I was greeted and asked to pick a color. Whenever I can't decide, I stick to either red or a french manicure. This would have been an easy decision, except they had like 10 apple reds. Anyways, after picking the appleish red I wanted, the lady asked if I would pay in cash and up front. I was seated at Pearl's station. She didn't really say much, and her personality was pretty lukewarm. She asked me what shape and length I wanted my nails. While painting them, I had to ask her to paint all the way past the cuticle because she was leaving it half done. Not sure why she would do that, it looked as my nails had grown out and I hadn't even left! She then asked me if my nails were real. Um, did you not just cut and file them? Of course they are real. The salon experience was okay - pretty much like every other manicure I've ever had. By the end of the day, two of my nails had chipped. Its been a week and now theres barely any polish left on my nails. What is the point of getting a manicure thats going to chip within 4 hours?? They also kinda messed up my nails. Two of my friends have long been going here for mani-pedis and waxing and I think they've been trying to keep it a secret!! Well, secret's out, sisters!! It's pretty no frills, though the massage chair had a whole seat-vibrating feature that I have not experienced in other salons and that I am going to find and purchase for home use. I found out this place is not too far from my house and does Brazillian waxes for $35 so I figured why not? It's definitely a no frills place, but it gets the job done. Loved that I didn't have to make an appointment or even wait. Was somewhat weirded out when the woman waxing me had to call downstairs for help. At first I didn't know what she was saying because it wasn't in English, but then someone else showed up. All I could think to myself was, "I know it had been a while, but damn! That bad?!" Also having two people waxing me at the same time was a new and strange experience. Anyway, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't the most thorough wax I've ever had. I might go back, though, because of the convenience factor and I am the worst person in the world at making appointments. read more

Vanessa D. and I were looking for a mani-pedi place and we found it in Sutter Nails. The ladies that work there really hustle and accept walk-ins. The massage chairs are pretty awesome. I only had a pedicure and it was pretty nice. They offer OPI nail polish which is great because I love the selection of colors. Even though it took me all of 30 seconds to mess up the polish on my toes, my manicurist was still really nice and was patiently fixing it for me. The only reason I've rated Sutter Nails as 2-stars instead of 1 is because I didn't actually get my nails done, or etc. so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they actually do good work. I always walk past this place on my way home and thought I'd drop in to see if there were any spaces available for a manicure. As soon as I stepped in, I felt like an unwelcome prospective customer. For starters, it took a while for anyone to notice I'd stepped through the door and even when they did, no one did anything about it. No hello, no one to ask what I'm there for... I understand being busy and not noticing a customer at the door for a little while, but the fact that after they did (I had about two employees knock into me as they walked past so I know they did!) they still left me standing there... well, it felt unusual. When finally I went over and asked someone if they were available for a manicure, she mumbled for me to "come later" in such a low, disinterested voice that I think I asked her "sorry, what?" about two times. A woman getting a pedicure made eye contact with me before I went out and gave me an awkward smile that suggested she noticed and also thought it was pretty unacceptable. Based on my short experience there, I sure as hell did not come back later, and I don't intend to ever give them my business even though it is only a couple of blocks from my apartment and definitely the most convenient nail/waxing place to get to. Hmm, how to review this place... Well it wasn't great. Or good. As soon as I went in the service was very rushed and awkward. About 3 women were working on my nails, and one just stood there. I really don't know what she was meant to be doing. They were all chattering together and laughing, which is quite off-putting when you don't know if they are talking about you or not. The paint job was subpar and chipped almost immediately. It wasn't very relaxing and I just felt like I was going through a factory assembly line. I dropped in after work on a whim and am SO happy that I did. I have never had anyone work so meticulously on my toes--even counting the time I went to an organic, high-end nail salon in Berkeley. Tammy was so nice and helpful- she even picked out a better color when we saw that the red I got was too light. I got the mani+pedi ($29 winter special!) and am so happy with the result. I got to sit and dry my nails for a good 10+ minutes and after that they sprayed them & helped me get my boots back on. Since I hadn't planned on getting a pedicure I was wearing skinny jeans. Well, the ladies literally tugged my jeans down, wrapped my toes in cuticle oil & plastic, rolled my socks on, and got those cowboy boots back on my feet. They even refused to let me take over the job, saying that they didn't want me to mess up my nails. Seriously... where do you get that kind of service?!?! Everyone was really friendly even though it was close to closing time and they could have easily rushed me out of there. The man there (maybe owner?) even said that I could come in anytime if my nails got messed up and they could fix it for free. I literally work a few doors up from the shop and anticipate getting regular mani-pedis here after a long day. Overall, excellent service & my nails look fantastic. WORST ACRYLICS EVER 5 reasons I would not EVER go here again 1. different prices inside and outside for acrylics (outside $35, inside $40) 2. charged 10 to take off my previous pink and whites (told me after they started to rip my nails off, that it would be 50$ for everything) I have also never been charged to take off old acrylics when getting another complete set 3. My manicurist put DIRTY TOOLS BACK IN CLEAN DRAWERS 4. the clear gel polish they used, started to yellow on my nails within one day 5. WORST part was the acrylics where not buffed down, and after a couple days there is a major line near my cuticle. Usually I am not really posting or complaining, I am a silent customer. But today I really wanna complain, just can't be silent. I was here in the morning on Oct 20th, I had a horrible experience. I told them I have only 30 min for mani and pedi, and asked their availability. They said "yeah, yeah we can make it for sure". As a result, I spent more than 1 hour there, I got late to my work, one of them cut my finger, which is bleeding now. Poor customer service! WIth my busy, long work hours I was finding it hard to get to the salon on my days off. A co-worker suggested Sutter because it is close to our office and moderately priced. I went here many times, even though I wasn't particularly impressed, just out of convenience. Many of these times played out the same way, this was by far the worst: I came to the salon asking if they had time for a mani, mentioning that I was on my lunch hour and did not have time to wait. They said "No, no we have time just sit down" so I sat down at an empty desk while the ladies stood around the stairs, talking to each other and eating. I watched the clock.. 5, 6, 7 minutes go back and I said - "Excuse me, I really don't have time to wait... I am happy to come back later if you are busy" **I should have left right then*** One of the ladies came over and started prepping my nails (half assed, looking over her shoulder and continuing the conversation with the other ladies) Then she just got up and returned to the stairs, leaving me there with one hand soaking the the water and the other with cuticle oil all over me. After about 3-5 mins (Im literally watching the clock- seeing my lunch hour go by and realize that I'm not going to have a chance to eat a thing) a totally different woman comes over, sits down, tries to pick up where the other woman left off but gets confused so starts ALL OVER I made a point to say that I wanted my nails square, she of course made them round. I was annoyed, but knew that correcting her at this point would take up even more time. The whole process ate up in total, an hour and 10 minutes, making me late returning to work and not having a chance to eat. I should also mention that the atmosphere is horrendous .... It feels like you're in a Loehmann's warehouse- theres bright florescent lighting- grey walls and carpet its just very uncomfortable. The one woman, I believe her name is Lily? Everyone here is extremely nice, they have an awesome selection of color and gave me an amazing hand/arm massage. I walked in for a last minute regular manicure. They were very sweet to take me as a walk in - the place was busy. The nail station was not very relaxing, I slammed my knee into the nail tech by accident as I was trying to get comfortable. The biggest downfall was the quality of my manicure. My cuticles were in fine shape, I now have horribly painful hangnails on two of my fingers because the nail tech was over zealous with the cuticle cutter. The nail polish was also applied very carelessly, you can see all of the layers of polish at the bottom of my cuticle and on some nails, covering my cuticles. This place is not terrible if you're looking for a quick, cheap fix but not the place for a quality manicure. I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone if they asked. read more

I went here today, with no appointment, for my first Brazilian wax (well, my first wax of any kind, really). My boyfriend and I walked in the door and someone immediately came up and asked me what I needed. I said, "I'm here for a full Brazilian wax," and she immediately put me in a nice private sterile room, had me take my shoes and underwear off, pull my skirt up, and lay down. She'd started waxing me less than 3 minutes after I walked in. She used soft wax and was VERY fast and efficient. It wasn't painless but it hurt a LOT less than I'd been told to expect. She chatted away with me as she worked--in fact, right after she'd pulled the first strip, I mentioned that I'd told my boyfriend to get a manicure while he waited for me. "You want me to go ask him?" she asked, and stepped out, quickly set him up, and came right back. She frequently apologized and said I was almost done, but I swear, it couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes before I was putting my shoes back on. She was done with my wax before my boyfriend's nails were finished being filed. Did I mention she charged $25 for the wax and $10 for the mani? What a STEAL! I'll be honest: This isn't the fanciest place, nor the most luxurious. But they are clean, friendly, quick, and incredibly good at what they do. I'll definitely be going back. UPDATE 11/12/07: They've raised their price for a Brazilian to $30, but it's still totally worth it. You still don't need an appointment, and for the record, their pedicures are awesome. read more

I go here often for waxes, which I'm happy with. However, I had my first pedicure here recently and was not happy. First of all they didn't use any soap or anything in the water.. so my feet soaked in plain water. My next problem was that they didn't even remove the callouses on my feet.. so how is this a pedicure?? Finally, talking on the phone while giving a pedicure is very unprofessional. Solid job and moderately priced :) Waxing: Only certain ladies do it. I would say Jenny is the best (most painless), but the other women are great as well. Simple. Quick. I used to visit the ladies at Sutter Nails with my friend back when they were located up the street. Before they move they seemed really friendly and thoughtful. Not sure if the foot traffic changed that for them, but I'm finally done coming here. About every two weeks I would stop in for my mani/pedi. It was always a quick dull massage and the polish would start chipping the next day. I realized there was more to life than just a half-assed shotgun nail job and started going to Silk Nails religiously. I will gladly pay $10 more to be treated like a guest and have polish last a week without chipping. On Tuesday I went in to get my nails filed and repainted. I had a mani/pedi about a week earlier and needed to get a quick touch up before meeting friends. I was told this would be $10, so I took out my credit card and a $10 bill to break for tip. I was then told that I couldn't use my card for services under $20 and to run next door to the 7/11 for an ATM. I was already late and asked them to make an exception - it was either an ATM fee for them, or me. The woman doing my nails was nice enough to just take the $10 and say it was ok. The owner of the place started yelling really loudly in another language and seemed obviously frustrated. That's not a good experience for anyone. Reading the rest of the reviews you can tell that this happens often and I'm done giving them my business. read more

When I first moved to the city this place was around the corner and had good yelp reviews, so I gave it a try - the reviews were right. The women at Sutter Nails are good at what they do. My nails always look awesome and the polish last days (even weeks) longer than anywhere else. It is also very clean, and is in a good location if you are out shopping in Union Square. The downside - a lot of attitude. They won't tell you when you come in that you have to pay in cash - in fact, you don't have to pay in cash, but the woman that runs the place will try to make you - no matter how much you spend. Also they play that "Oh, the wait is only 5 minutes" and then 20 minutes later when you tell them you cant wait anymore, "Oh, it's almost time - wait, wait". No thanks, I have a life. I had Jenny for a Brazilian. I don't think I have ever had a more painless wax, and I have had regular ones for a really, really long time. She was fast and efficient, and everything was fairly straight. It's not a fancy salon, not by a longshot, but the space is clean and well-lit, all the instruments are clean, and latex gloves were part of the program, all star-worthy. Some advice to all you who are new to this type of wax; do what she tells you. Seriously. If you have to contort in weird ways, do it; if you don't follow instructions, she can't do her job, and you're likely to be unhappy with the results. The last minute decision took me away from my usual place across town (the best brazillian waxes ever, but alas no time for greatness) so I came here, and got a basic bikini. While it was okay, got the job done, and only $18, I believe firmly in the old adage "you get what you pay for." Like I said, got it done, and didn't take too long, but towards the last few strips, the wax was getting too hot, and she wasn't great about listening to me when I told her and letting it cool first. During my two-week stay in San Francisco, I needed my French Shellac manicure to be re-done. Based on others' reviews, I chose and thought I found a gem in Sutter Nails. But I am instead wishing I had waited until I was back home to get my nails re-done. The problem is that the white part of my French Shellac manicure is chipped and fading - which isn't supposed to happen only a week after getting them done. Before I continue, let me first provide a quick background. My hometown salon applies 5 layers (base coat, 2 "nail bed" polish layers, white tip, and top coat) of Shellac polish for my French Shellac manicure. This lasts me 2.5 weeks and doesn't start chipping/fading until close to 2 weeks. Now, Sutter Nails only applied 3 Shellac polish layers ("nail bed" polish, white tip, and top coat), and I believe this to be the reason why their French Shellac manicure is lackluster and of poor quality. I'd rate my experience with Sutter Nails with no stars if I could but I'm giving them two stars: one star for their clean facility and friendly staff, and another star because, based on what I saw, they seem to perform a regular manicure fairly well. P.S. If you presently have Shellac on your nails and it was done by another salon, prepare to possibly pay $5 for Sutter Nails to remove it. read more

If I could give this place a (-)1, I would. I have been going to this place for about a year now whenever I'm able to get away from my own, very busy practice. In the past, when my own clients have needed a quick mani-pedi in a pinch I have personally, walked my clients to them. NEVER AGAIN. They cannot be trusted. Today, I was treated horrifically by the unattractive, RUDE and completely UNPROFESSIONAL manager/owner or whatever she is of this place, I wouldn't recommend Sutter Nails to my worst enemy. She's absolutely terrible. Here's why: 1.) They're over-priced. $34 for a rushed, terribly done mani-pedi? Go elsewhere. 2.) This same manager/owner RUSHES HER AESTHETICIANS so they can cram as many people into this place as possible. 3.) Thanks to being rushed by this manager/owner, mani part of my mani-pedi, TODAY the aesthetician CUT MY FINGER and then rushed over to the next client who needed a manicure! 4.) Heads-up ladies and gents, if you're LOCAL you're treated WORSE than if you're an out-of-towner/tourist. 5.) POOR VENTILATION. With all the chemicals being used for the manicures, pedicures, etc. If you're sensitive to smells, don't go here. It stinks. Literally. This owner/manager person didn't offer an apology, a refund or ANYTHING EXCEPT to BLAME the aesthetician instead of taking responsibility for HER actions in rushing said aesthetician to finish up my manicure! After reading a few other reviews about their questionable cleanliness, I am actually going to call the Health Department tomorrow and ask them to please inspect this place. What a great find! Walked in after work yesterday for a gel mani and was sat right away. Was tended to amazingly by 2 ladies. I am very happy with my mani- I have problems when I get a gel manicure the technician often paints over the cuticles slightly which makes the polish lift as it grows out. Not here. No paint touched any skin and I'm excited to see how it looks next week! Being less than 2 blocks from my work I think I'll keep coming back. read more
