The place doesn't take reservations so expect to wait. We waited about 30 minutes for seats at the bar. The interior looks beautiful and really replicates Japanese art, culture, etc nicely. The service was decently fast as well as they gave us one plate at a time. The drink was tasty and you can definitely taste the alcohol in it. I got so lucky again. I wanted to do on a Saturday night. I arrived around 730ish, and got lucky to find parking. When I arrived, I was told there was a bar seating in 10 minutes, which I took. I scanned the menu and had to have the old fashioned again (12 dollars). It was a great deal as it was boozy for me to stay happy for a while. For dinner, I splurged with the miso lamb (26 dollars) and chicken breast and thigh skewers (4.6 dollars each). All the meats were perfectly grilled and tender. The miso paste was perfect with the lamb, and the chimichurri sauce made it more flavorful. There were micro greens and potatoes for the vegetables. The wasabi topping on the chicken was very nice and brought the kick needed. I don't know if it was real wasabi, but it was still good. For dessert, the matcha tiramisu (8 dollars) was earthy and light, and the green tea was a nice gesture. The service was attentive and nice. My bartender made a great drink and the whole staff took great care of us. The vibe is still very nice, with lots of Japanese nostalgia displayed. The bar area has a nice open kitchen to watch the action as well. Music looks to be Japanese pop or anime. Their ramen noodles are rated undercooked - not necessarily in a bad way - it's just not as soft as other places but I actually prefer my noodles a bit undercooked. I was in town for a work conference and ended up meeting up with one of my friends who also happens to be Yelp elite. She recommended this place and it was close to where I was staying so it sounded like a good deal. I got there just as they were opening around 5 PM and was seated promptly. The decor inside is very cool. I love the chairs and all of the Japanese influence. We had so many delicious bites from the skirt steak to the fried chicken. Everything had great flavor and texture. The Sapporo's were nice and cold and cheap. I did try one of the fancy drinks the Godzilla and it was yummy. As we were leaving this place was starting to get packed on a weekday which is a good sign to me. Very cute izakaya! Only 20 min wait on a Tuesday night around 9pm, was totally worth it! Our favorite dish was the mentaiko fries, and we loved the matcha tiramisu. The chicken oyster and chicken thigh skewers were very tender too! For cocktails, we got the yuzu lemonado and a beer, the beer was good, also yuzu, but I think I will pass next time on the yuzu lemonado. After leaving Player 1 Video Game Bar earlier than expected, my girlfriend and I decided to stop by Susuru for a late bite. It ended up being a great decision. We started by sharing a drink that came in a cool fishbowl-style cup, which was a fun way to kick things off. For appetizers, we ordered a few skewers that were really good and full of flavor. One of the highlights was the fries topped with seaweed and a special sauce, they were honestly amazing, and we pretty much devoured them right away. We also tried a fried mochi with bacon. It was definitely interesting with its sweet and savory mix. A little unusual, but still good and worth trying if you like unique flavors. For our main dishes, we both ordered ramen. By the time it arrived we had already filled up on appetizers, so we ended up taking most of it home, but the ramen itself was still really good. To top things off, the staff gave us a free mini matcha cake, which was a nice surprise. I enjoyed it, although my girlfriend is a bit picky with desserts. I remember reading somewhere that Susuru felt like a Michelin star experience without the Michelin prices, and I couldn't agree more. Orlando has a small collection of these incredible Asian tapas places which warm the heart and feed the soul, and Susuru is now my favorite of those places. First impressions- the inside of Susuru is so damn charming. You really feel like you've been transported to a delightful restaurant you'd find in Japan. The atmosphere is fun but not crazy by any means. The restaurant was full with a 10 minute wait, and I believe that was late on a Wednesday night... I have friends that went back to Susuru and said that they waited over an hour on a Saturday night (they spent the hour at the Axe-Throwing tiki bar a few shops away). I don't believe they take reservations, so if you don't want to wait a while, make sure you go on a weeknight! Also, parking is plentiful, free, and not an issue. My buddy that I went with wanted to splurge and have a sort of Top Chef-fy experience, so she ordered way more than 2 people have any business ordering. Zero complaints, because we had a blast... and we found it pretty affordable considering how much we ordered. THE GOODS: 1) Tonkotsu Ramen- her and I were both craving ramen, so we started off with it. Ugh. Delicious. I got the regular Tonkotsu, and she got the Tonkotus Black (the only difference is the black garlic oil). We both loveddd it. And honestly, it was even more delicious the next day when we had the leftovers for a hearty lunch. The noodles and broth were great; and the egg was yummy (my favorite soft boiled egg in town is still Domu's East End location's bruléed soil boiled egg). I'd order the ramen again. 2) Chicken Karaage- perfectly battered and fried. Sometimes, I feel like karaage is over-battered and so crispy that it hurts your mouth when you're crunchy down on it... This had the ideal crunch with tender pieces of chicken inside. And the yuzu mayo was a great complement to the dish. 3) Mentaiko Fries- I felt like the more I had these, the more I liked them. I'm a big fan of putting roe on more food items, so I loved the idea of making a spicy mayo with roe. The fries were crunchy and went so well with the roe mayo. Thumbs up. 4) Susuru Gohan- this was a nice dish. I liked that it was pretty simple and a nice addition to the rest of the meal. I'd think of it as ordering a flavorful side of rice rather than an appetizer or dish on its own. 5) Momo (Yakitori)- this was good. Not super memorable... but tasty. I've had better chicken thigh yakitori. I'd probably order something else to try something new next time. 6) Beef Tongue (Kushiyaki)- OH MY. Hands down, my favoriteee bite of the whole experience... and quite honestly my favorite bite I've had of something in a while. The beef tongue quite literally melts in your mouth. Ughhh what a savory and delicious bite. I could have this every single day of my life and never get tired of it. I am salivating just thinking about it. 7) Matcha Tira-Masu- While the matcha tira-masu was tasty, I went into dessert thinking this was going to be my #1 dessert... but I actually liked the Ube soft serve more. This tasted more along the lines of a very light cheesecake dusted in matcha. I love how it was served- it was a beautiful dish. 8) Soft Serve (Ube)- this was great and was surprised by it. It felt like a much lighter ice cream, and wasn't heavy or super creamy. It reminded me more of an asian shaved ice (like at Saigon Snow at Mills Market). The ube flavor was delightful and wasn't overpoweringly sweet as it often is. Be mindful that the flavors vary- a friend of mine that returned to Susuru LOVED this ube soft serve when we had it but didn't like the new flavor she had when she returned (she couldn't remember what it was, maybe a vanilla?). Overall, I absolutely loveddd my experience at Susuru. I even bought one of their t-shirts so I can get 10% off every time I return, lmao. I now tell everyone and their mothers about how great this place is. I wish it was closer to me- but I'll have to plan a Disney + Susuru trip on that side of town soon just to experience my favorites all over again (and try some new bites)! I always get the chasu gohan but this time I got it with chicken and not pork belly $12. The single boiled egg was an extra $2! I have so many photos from Susuru that Yelp won't even let me post them all. That should give you an idea of how much I love this place. I know Juju is closer to my side of town, but Susuru is the one that I go back to. It's a crowd favorite too! All our family, friends, guests, coworkers, and anyone else we've taken here just rave about it and say that it's one of the best places they've eaten at. In a plaza full of heavy-hitters, Susuru holds its own and keeps me coming back on repeat. All the food is served small plate-style and comes out as it's ready. So it's best to order things family style as different dishes will come out before others and, if you order separately, there's no guarantee all the food will come out at the same time. It's also good to order 2-3 dishes per person. You absolutely have to get the Mentaiko Fries, King Salmon Tataki, Tempura King Oyster Mushrooms, and Hamachi Kama to start. Then, I love getting the Momo, Negima, Kawa, Beef Tenderloin, Brussel Sprouts, and Eggplant skewers. Pairing all of this with the Susuru Gohan will absolutely stuff you. I started off with the Astro Boy Mule which disappointedly, did not come in an Astro boy can. It was a light and mild beverage to sip on with dinner so I enjoyed it. The Truffle Sesame Tuna was absolutely delicious. The tuna was fresh and thick, the sesame dressing with truffle oil was plate-licking-good, and the bits of rice puffs added a nice texture contrast. The Wagyu Don Special is one of my favorite comfort meals. It's satisfying, delicious, and well-balanced. What more could you want? The wagyu was tender and delicately seasoned. The rice was soft with umami flavor and with the egg yolk mixed in, it became even creamier and delicious. The house pickles seem minor but were really necessary to balance out the savoriness. It's a 10/10 dish! Susuru also specializes in yakitori and I can totally see why. The chicken ones (Momo & Soriresu) ended up being my favorites. Of course when I saw the Matcha Tira-Masu on the menu, I had to unlock my second stomach. We came on a Saturday night around 8pm after a theme park visit and somehow got seated in under 5 minutes -- a total miracle considering the usual long wait. The interior gave me nostalgic Japan vibes, and service was friendly and attentive. The yakitori had that great charcoal flavor I love -- almost as good as what I had in Japan, though I think the marinade there is slightly different. My favorite dish is the Tantan Ramen, which is great for those who appreciate a spicy broth. There are many great small plates to choose from, perfect for sharing and sampling. The service is always fast and friendly, and I've often gotten in with little to no wait, but some nights do get very busy. A couple of times there's been about a 90 minute wait, so plan accordingly. I was lucky to stay within walking distance of Susuru, which was one of the top restaurants on my to-do list in Orlando. The surrounding area is generally excellent to stay in if you don't want to stay on the Disney resorts, with the abundance of affordable food options and shopping within walking distance. Came here for an early dinner and was seated at the bar. The decor is super cute--izakaya vibes with homages to anime characters. Chris (who I believe is the owner) was so kind and looked out for me and other customers. I had the Tantan ramen, which had me easily sold with the spicy peanut broth. Although I couldn't taste any semblance of peanut flavoring, the broth was creamy, rich, and flavorful and had a perfect hint of spiciness to it by default. The chili oil is what makes it spicy and Chris was nice to set that aside for me so I could add it to my liking (and unfortunate low spicy tolerance). I also ordered a side of the bacon-wrapped mochi, which was superb. In fact, the appetizers all sounded mouth-watering, but I had to narrow it down to one and it was fun to eat. Chris was nice enough to offer another one on the house because his kitchen made an extra one. I was too full by then and sadly had to skip the Matcha Tiramisu, which I was so looking forward to. I would recommend that if you want to be able to get a seat fast on a weekend, you need to wait outside at least 20/30 min before they open; I went about an hour after they opened and had to wait about an hour for a spot inside the restaurant, but waiting for a while is worth it if youre able to! The food was all very delicious; the skewers were grilled with just a little bit of char and salt and the meats were tender and juicy. The mentaiko fries were my favorite alongside the negitoro handrolls (the handroll was on a limited menu). The saba shioyaki was grilled well and the lemon juice and grated daikon gave it a refreshing taste. The server will torch the butter on the grilled onigiri when it arrives to the table, and the butter gave it a nice aroma but it was a bit rich to eat by itself. The server was also very nice and attentive, stopping by and checking up on our table. I will say though near the front of the entrance when you walk in, it does have an odor but when you get past the seating area its all good! The ambience of this place is amazing! It looks like a Japanese izakaya. They have a pretty varied menu. The skewers were flavorful, I got the shishito peppers, achilles (chicken thigh + scallions) and the bacon wrapped mochi. My favorite was the bacon wrapped mochi, but make sure to eat it while its hot or the mochi gets rubbery. I also got the tempura fired oyster mushrooms which were not greasy and very flavorful by themselves. I didn't think the sauce was even necessary. The amount was also a lot for one dish. Ambiance was great and felt like we were in a hip Izakaya restaurant in Japan! Here's what we ordered: 1 Thigh Momo 1 Chicken Oyster Soriresu 2 Wagyu Short ribs 1 Pork Belly 1 Brussel Sprouts 1 Shishito Peppers 1 Eggplant 1 White Rice (for our young one to enjoy with the Wagyu Short ribs 2 Susuru Chashu Gohan 1 Tori Paitan Ramen 1 Mi-so-hot ramen 1 Yuzu Street Corn 1 King Oyster 3 Hot Green Teas 1 Asahi Draft 1 Matcha Tiramisu (which comes with hot green tea, but us not knowing this, our waitress was kind enough to give us all refills on our green teas) For our family of four this was a wonderful first meal Izakaya style to break the ice to begin our Fall Break vacation in Orlando, Florida!
