Sushi Tomi has been around for awhile, and I hope it's around for forever. Obviously, barring that they get tired or other things happen. Sushi Tomi has been around for a long time. Sushi Tomi is one of the original secret Asian American staples of Orlando that opened in 2013 back when Orlando was known as Mickey Mouse's backyard. It's decently priced, albeit far, and provides a nice sense of comfort. We went on a week night and they were still super busy. Located closer to East Colonial area, it's at 8463 S John Young Pkwy, Orlando, FL 32819. Their claim to fame are their bento boxes and different lunch and dinner sets, which is to say you will leave full with a balanced meal. I won't lie, I have been wanting to go for the longest time. I felt like some kid pressing his face up against a window, just watching everyone go and enjoy their meal. So this was really great for me, personally. I got their dinner tempura and sushi set. The set came with miso soup and salad as well as a variety of meats and veggies that had been tempura coated and fried with a side of rice. I also ordered a sparkling jelly sake drink, a tamago nigiri and eel nigiri. My overall portion costed about $45 without tip. The set gets a 8.5/10 rating from me. I kinda wish I just went with the tempura set instead of trying to have the best of both worlds. Not that the sushi was bad or anything, but the tempura was really the star of the show. It was so fresh and crispy and light and amazing with the sauce they served it with. The sushi was fine and well made, I just had heart eyes for the tempura. The tamale nigiri and the eel nigiri was good, but not the best I have ever had. They had other things on their menu, but I really recommend going here for Japanese basic meals or comfort meals. I think it's not dazzling, but provides you with a sense of comfort. Not to mention the service was amazing, and it truly was authentic and not gentrified. We had dinner here last night , and really enjoyed it. The location is pretty easy to find, with plenty of parking, in a strip mall. The restaurant itself is fairly small, with tables, as well as bar seating, where you can watch the chefs create any of the sushi dishes. We opted for two seats at the bar, were provided with menus, placed and received our drink order very quickly (I went with a leave hot sake, which felt like a steal a little over $10). We both ordered off the specials menu, which included soup, salad, then your main dish. Both were good, and came out, shortly after we ordered. Our sushi dishes took a bit longer (about 25 min), however, it was fun to sit at the bar, and watch them create all the different sushi rolls and dishes. My husband had the sushi combination deluxe - a tuna roll, along with the chef's choice of 8 pieces of Nigiri. He really enjoyed it. I had the Nama chirashi - chef's choice of 10 pieces of raw fish, in a box, over perfectly cooked sushi rice...yum! Not only was the box of fish arranged beautifully, it was also generously cut, and, quite tasty. Sushi Tomi is my new guilty pleasure, I can't lie! This unassuming restaurant has a great menu that's got affordable pricing and the portion sizes are larger than expected! I've had their sushi rolls (OBT roll), and their Pork katsudon (rice bowl). I don't know exactly what's the sauce that is on the Katsura but it needs to be bottled and sold immediately! The staff was very friendly, and they were coop front about the seating here with it being a smaller spot. Even on a hectic day during lunch rush the longest I've had to wait for a table is 10-15 minutes. This place looks like it would be a seat yourself situation but you do need to check in with the staff before sitting down to make sure you're not skipping the line of anyone else there that might be waiting. If you're a big fan of sushi or different incisions I recommend checking this place out! read more

My favorite shop to go to for authentic japanese dishes! The servers and staff were all really sweet and welcoming, and the portions of the food were big. The chicken katsu was delicious, with the sauce being semi sweet and salty, and with rice it was just perfect. They also gave some togarashi, which is a spicy seasoning, and adding that elevates the dish well. They are open Saturdays for lunch now. It is not as busy as when it is on weekdays lunch. The chicken teriyaki lunch special is $17 - the bento is with miso soup and cold salad - I usually request 2 miso soups instead of the salad. A teriyaki chicken, shrimp (2) and vegetable tempura (carrot,green beans and eggplant), California roll (8 pcs) and choice of white or fried rice. I also added 4 ($3 each) Tamago nigiri. They make their own Tamago here and its delicious. It's my "dessert" when I order it. So the service here has gone down hill from the times I have visited. Lack of refilling water cups and gestures of how the everything is doing etc. That reflects tips. Only 1 sushi chef on a Saturday with 2 servers. This is the only japanese restaurant that is still authentic by the look of staff and diners. Hanamazuki closed a year or so ago- so that was the competition for lunch sets etc. The food here is still consistent its just the service lacked. Rating: 3.5 stars but I rounded up to 4. Sushi Tomi is a restaurant I've gone to for at least a little over a decade and it's been pretty consistent. It offers a lot of traditional Japanese items on their menu. I stopped off at lunch time with my family. The menu has changed over the years, but I always loved their grilled mackerel. My sister got the chirashi bowl and my nephew ordered the pork cutlet. We had the sushi roll combination for appetizer. We also got the miso soup and side salad. Maybe the chefs were having an off day. For me, I wasn't impressed with the grilled mackerel. It was a little dry and not flavorful. I ordered ponzu sauce on the side and it didn't help much. The sushi rolls were still good and my nephew enjoyed the pork cutlets. The chirashi was also nothing special but the fish was fresh. The miso soup was average and slightly bland. The dressing isn't my favorite as it's heavy on the vinegar and doesn't have the creamy ginger taste I'm used to. Although it wasn't my best experience that day, I'll still come back and try something else next time. I like to support authentic Japanese homestyle cuisine. The seating is limited since the space is small but they have a quick turnaround. A lot of Japanese customers so you know it's authentic. The servers are friendly and nice. Also, an added bonus, it has those fancy heated toilets with some extras in the women's restroom! Plenty of parking since it's in a shopping center space. read more

My bf and I came here as a recommendation from a friend. The workers are Japanese, so maybe it makes the sushi more authentic? It was clean and spacious, and we were seated right away on a week night. Our waitress told me the katsudon and tonkatsu ramen were popular among the younger crowd, so I tried the ramen. I enjoyed the variety of toppings like the traditional soft boiled egg, braised pork, and others. Noodles were a respectable firmness. BUT the sushi is what stands out! Flavorful and fresh. My bf got the unagi and tuna avocado rolls. I didn't get a picture of it, but if you can, I'd recommend the negihama roll. It's scallion and yellowtail. Very homey spot, everyone speaks Japanese and they have a nice Japanese toilets in the bathroom. They import their rice from japan, Hokkaido and the quality is amazing! I had their salmon nigiri and it melts in my mouth. Their katsudon was ok, flavor is good but I wish it was crispy. Their beef tataki is really good but the star of the show was the OBT Roll. Wow. I have been coming here since 2016 at least. This is my absolute FAVORITE restaurant in all of Orlando. (And I have lived here for about 20 years). If someone asks me for a recommendation? Sushi Tomi. If someone asks me where I want to celebrate (birthday, event, etc.)? SUSHI TOMI!!! I am genuinely shocked I have not reviewed this place, but when I say that this place deserves more than 5 stars, I MEAN IT. Be warned, I have a lot to say about this place. Ambiance - calm, homely, cozy, and a great place to relax after work or getting a drink with friends (beer of course). The color palette is just so lovely and makes you feel so welcomed. It's a bit of a small space, but I feel like that adds to the cozy feeling. Very clean as well! (Probably the most clean place in all of Orlando.) Their bathroom also has one of those high tech toilets. Thought I would mention it because I don't think I have seen a place in Orlando with it. Service - TOP NOTCH. In all the years I have gone, NOT ONCE have I had a bad experience with servers. They are all super sweet, check in with you, and quick with bringing water and meals. The owner is super sweet as well and is probably one of the best parts of the restaurant that makes it stand out so much. She is so lovely and hard working. I have been going for almost 9 years (crazy to think about), but not once have I had anything less than a stellar experience. Food - OH MY GOD. You want some of the best food in Orlando? Go to Sushi Tomi. I am a Katsudon fan (I have tried other restaurants and NONE compare), but when I tried my friend's dishes, I have never been disappointed. I watched one of my more talkative friends go silent as he devoured the curry he ordered, only stopping to say how good it was. My friend ordered sushi (I believe she got the Orlando roll) and it was top tier. My personal favorites (as mentioned above) are the Chicken Katsudon (the pork is incredible as well, but I am more of a chicken gal) and the fried pumpkin. The Chicken Katsudon is so flavorful and balanced. The sauce is a little salty, little sweet, and a little tangy. The sauce is embedded into the egg and the breaded chicken as it cooks so each bite is a tender flavorful bite. The rice is plain, but that's so the sauce can seep into it and not have something overpowering underneath the flavorful meats. You can choose between a miso or a salad to go with it. I always choose the miso because it's so light and well flavored. The salad is not something to sleep on though. It's incredibly refreshing and perfect to have in the summer! The fried pumpkin is to die for. The pumpkin itself is a more mellow flavor and has the perfect fluffy texture of a cooked pumpkin with a nice crisp crust. When paired with the salty, slightly sweet sauce, IT'S TO DIE FOR. I want to add points to the flavor as well because I don't have a sense of smell, so sometimes the Umami flavors are missed on me, but I have experienced that flavor and it was here. If you have a sense of smell or not, this place is the best and so amazing with balancing flavors. I also want to mention that I have recommended it to several friends and not one has come back with a negative review, only rave reviews about how they love it. If I ask friends if they want to go to Sushi Tomi, I will always get an excited yes and a "I'm so excited" as we build up to the moment they open at 5:30 pm. We will actually fast throughout the day so we can devour their food. I have probably wrote a novel here, but out of any place I have ever been, I would say this is my number one spot for a reason. If you are in Orlando, YOU MUST GO HERE. Don't waste time on tourist traps or whatever the influences are saying is hot now. Was not a fan of the Pork Curry Katsu as it was too salty for me but I will be back to try their sushi! The staffs were super sweet however and pricing is very fair. Amazing food! At first I was hesitant but once I sat down I could tell the food was about to hit the spot. Very much a mom and pop restaurant with delicious home cooked food. Some people will come a little bit before opening to make sure they can snag a seat right away. Service can be slow sometimes but everyone is very nice.
