I really want to give this place 4 stars but had a few issues... the lady working the front that took out to go order was extremely rude to customers she told someone on the phone she wasn't going to answer their questions they had to come in and hung up. Another customer came to pick up their order and she stated I told you 30-35 min you just sit and wait. It took us 35 mins to get out to go order and the place wasn't busy at all. Food was good but service was disaster. I've been this place 3 times. First time, the server got my order wrong, I told him it was wrong but he said it was right. He didn't want to change it because that't what he thought I ordered. So I was basically being forced to eat the food whatever he got. So just to tell them be careful next time, I told the lady there what happened. She didn't say sorry but said the menu they got me is good so I'm lucky. Haha I luckily paid $10 more to taste that. And plus, one guy kept leaving the kitchen to smoke and they were looking for him several times. Third time, I regret why I thought this place wouldn't be bad after all that. I wanted a mochi icecream for dessert but I was too full at the moment so I ordered it to go. They served it on plate to eat there. I told them it was to go. They went to this place behind of curtain, talking, and the lady who told me I was lucky to eat wrong food paying more at the first time came to me asking to eat there because they will melt. I said we are not living that far so it's fine. (And it's funny because fin sushi always gives me mochi icecream to go) she went to that place behind of curtain again and STARTED SCREAM. A MAD SCREAM. Then they started to talk in Korean like "she said she ordered it to go!!" "I didn't get the order I don't know!" (I can speak korean) I was mad. I was really mad. Not long after the guy who got my order came with icecream saying sorry politely so me and my husband decided to not come back to this place again, not saying something to that lady. She's the chef's wife and the owner of the restaurant so I didn't want that server to get in trouble having hard time with her. We left, got home. Not long later I tasted that mochi icecream and it just TASTED like an ERASER. I know it happens when you keep it TOO LONG TIME. It was really old mochi icecream. I threw all them away. Credit goes to Yelper Leigh M who recommended Sushin to me last year. Tonight with the threat of snow, we found ourselves with little company at Sushin and no cars in the lot at all. I have to admit, that made me slightly wary. But, we stepped in and immediately felt that quirky warmth of a small Japanese neighborhood joint but with more tables than I envisioned given the small storefront. We were impressed with the range of the menu--not disparate choices but many seeming to me sensibly linked to one another. And the two Korean offerings, bulgogi and kalbi, well, this was looking better by the minute. Highlights are: properly made sushi, without giant gobs of rice, covering wan fish, covered in mayo sauce. If you tend toward being a sushi purist (as much as you can pull that off outside of NYC, SF and Japan while not being Japanese), are delighted by appropriate portions (b/c sushi can carry hefty calories), and love the tapas-sized offerings of cooked Japanese food that make this place delightful, then get yourself here. I admit that yesterday being Monday, I was feeling grumpy and then when my boys suggested going out for a bite, my grumpiness turned to forlorn dismay at possibly another Murfreesboro resto falling off my list like a calving iceberg. Instead, we all left Sushin happy, content and grateful to these folks who have been slogging it out now 20 years in Murfreesboro to bring us all this very good food. We ordered, well, kind of a lot, b/c my boys. They are locusts and this our maiden voyage. -Ikura (salmon roe) - snappy, fresh -Salmon sashimi - exceptionally fresh -Salmon roll -Spider roll - fresh, right combo that highlighted all ingredients, not too much rice -Dragon roll - fresh, right combo that highlighted all ingredients, not too much rice, unagi sauce not overly sweet-a winner -Wasabi shumai - yummy shumai with a hit of wasabi. Chunky texture tells me it was handmade versus factory made and frozen. Tasty -Agedashi tofu - perfect bite-sized tofu fried in tapioca. The sauce tasted freshly made. I could taste the fresh ginger in it. Really nice. -Edamame - simple, straight up -Fried soft shelled crab - tasty, but alas frozen, but Sushin is in good company--how to get fresh soft shelled crab to Murfreesboro or TN for that matter? I still love soft-shelled crab so much that frozen is better than none. -Manteiko onigiri (spicy cod roe rice ball) (in honor of Yelper Leigh M who led me here). This was so good. Warm, rice parcels stuffed with funky cod roe. The rice here is high quality sushi rice, fresh, plump grains -Fish katsu (a first for us)--light and tasty fried fish. -Ramen--oh yeah. Always on the hunt for a great bowl of ramen and I've found one type here. Our waitress said it's very good--she is asian--so that's all I needed to hear. This is a clear soy broth with mushrooms. Not a tonkatsu broth which is opaque with collagen and glistening with tiny blobs of delicious fat. Still good. Simple and good. Ramen noodles nicely done and less chewy than I like but perfect for my husband who had multiple, largish "tastes" of my ramen. The sushi sashimi is the best my number two son has ever had, he declared. I tend to think he might know a bit of which he speaks since he's a sashimi fiend. Hard to believe, but after all that food, we still ordered red bean and green tea ice cream. Delicious. This made my family so happy. We were beaming and marveling at this little gem in Murfreesboro. We were starting to feel dismay that we might be incredibly limited for restos in Murfreesboro but, no, b/c, Houston we have sushi. Sushin is very good. This is now my family's favorite sushi joint in Murfreesboro. And it gives our Franklin and Nashville favorites a serious run for their money. (By the way, in case this review smacks of transplant amazed to find civilization on Mars, I grew up in these parts and feel that gives me license to take shots like the home town girl I am--the girl who still pinches herself at the crazy diversity of food offerings here compared to 15 years ago.) read more

CUSTOMER SERVICE: This is definitely a family restaurant so I feel like the vibe is pretty laid back! They're definitely friendly and they don't hover. We hoped the food might make up for the service and run down atmosphere, but it was pretty midline. The salad provided at the beginning of the meal looked like it sat out for a while. Long overdue review. We have been here, and I exaggerate not, 50+ times. Rolls are good, especially the Alaska, Valentine, and Rich Roll(spicy crab). The sashimi is very good and fresh consistently. I also enjoy the yaki udon, a fresh dish, light on the sauce. On the button every time. The pork Gyoza is our favorite starter. I've been here a few times now and it's been great each time. The food is actual Japanese food, not the Americanized version you find throughout most of town. They have a huge menu and many of the dishes aren't found anywhere else in Murfreesboro. Service is also great, the staff are really friendly and helpful. I noticed that staff who were not waiting on us were still stopping by to make sure everything was OK, refilling drinks, etc. The restaurant looks nice and is clean (including the aquarium...I have a huge pet peeve with restaurants keeping dirty/overstocked/ugly aquariums). This place is amazing! The staff is always very kind and attentive, and the food is the best kept secret in the 'Boro! Try the Yaki Udon. It's my go to dish when I want something other than sushi. Came right when they open at 11AM for the brunch/lunch time. A little after 11AM, but the waitress/hostess whom I which presume is also the owner of the restaurant came to greet my aunt and I and took us to our table. Not just the wife, but her husband also greeted us with big smiles! The atmosphere was nice and service was fantastic. We got our drinks taken care of and ordered a California roll with shrimp teriyaki bento box. The waiting was not bad; probably about 10-15 mins (I understand cooking preparations and making it fancy!) We had our miso soup served hot and it was very good! The food was amazing and I will be back again! It was my 1st time there and I will most likely do business with Sushin very soon! :) This time I will come back for the sushi since I am a big sushi lover. read more

They had a help wanted sign and it is true they need help. The main reasons I am giving this a low score is for the poor service and high price. If you are going to charge dinner prices at lunch time then you had better have fast, friendly, spot-on service! It took too long for our order to get taken when there was only one other table seated upon arrival. That table was a large party but they had already been served their food. Our food was slow and my mother-in-law did not get her food served with the rest of our food. In fact two other tables that arrived after we had ordered received their food and she still didn't have her dish. We would have asked about it but we couldn't get anyone to pay any attention to us! When they finally brought her food out it was lukewarm and we had to get it to go as we had been there an hour. I believe that the food had been waiting in the kitchen and the server had clearly forgotten about it. I want to add that they had two people in and out of the sushi bar at all times and there was at least one in the kitchen plus the server/floater/hostess. Here is my problem - there were enough people in this small establishment that IF they had cared about the job and customers, they could have plainly seen that we were a table in distress. But they did not bother - keeping their heads down at all times. We never want to return to this place due to the service. And even once we pointed out that her meal was served astoundingly late, we received numerous apologies from the one man who had been working at the sushi bar but we were never offered a discount or anything else for our trouble. The saddest part is that the food was good....but horrible customer service ruined the day. read more

Horrible service! Went on a Friday night and it took over an hour to get our first roll and sushi order. We didn't even get our whole order after a total of an hour and a half. We looked around and one table would have food out of 15. They need to figure out a better system for serving people.
