First I would like to say the service was great and so was the ambiance. I was excited to try the sushi since the fish looked so fresh which it was, but it got ruined by all the unnecessary garnishes/toppings. The yellowtail jalapeño sauce they used was so salty. The toppings they put on the nigiri's were just doing way too much. Even the sushi just tasted off. My mouth was too overwhelmed by the random flavors when all I wanted to taste was sushi. My stomach felt weird at the end of it and everything was expensive so I was pretty upset.

Simply delicious, fresh & beautifully presented in a calm, spacious setting. Exceptionally fresh fish. Friendly service. We ordered 5 rolls and the 20 piece Nigiri ($100) which in hindsight, I would have preferred a bunch of different rolls instead of the Nigiri.. This is a treat, as it does add up and of course the gratuity adds to that add up ! But what a lovely night out for the 3 of us. I think I had read some comments about service or size of the restaurant..both exceeded my expectations. A really large space, comfortably lit and nicely designed. And the service was personal & friendly. The owner stood talking to our neighboring table for a huge amount of time, maybe 20 plus minutes, but did not seem to engage other tables. It's funny, you spend time with regulars or those you might already know, however a new customer may become a regular with a little bit of "hey" from the owner.

Some of the freshest fish I've ever had! As you can tell from the photos we are big salmon fans- and they did not disappoint. This place was gorgeous and spotless all around; we enjoyed our meal thoroughly. The fish was fresh and tasty, the service was immaculate and we were attended to frequently even though it was extremely busy. The atmosphere on a Saturday night can't be matched, it was so lively here! Cute place for a date night/special event, and you can walk around afterwards as well. Parking is on street so you'll have to look around for a bit.

This fashionable sushi restaurant was welcoming and fun, a great addition to Newton. We loved the pristine fish, inventive rolls, and friendly service and menu advice from the owner. My only quibble is that a real menu would be a nice addition. But all in all, looking forward to returning!

Really great quality fish! Tried the Ora King Salmon Tacos (5/5 my favorite thing we ordered), Kabayaki Chicken Wings (5/5 just well done), Spicy Avocado and Shrimp Salad (5/5), Twenty Piece Sashimi (5/5 great quality), Phoenix Roll, Northside Roll, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, all of which were great! I will say it is a pretty pricey place though, so I'm not sure if it's really worth the high prices. It is good quality though.

The loveliest local spot for creative and amazingly flavorful sushi. The combinations were outstanding and unique. Every bite was satisfying and superb. The service was warm and inviting, as is the interior space and decor. We will be returning every chance we have when in Boston.

I can't recommend SushiCo more. My Fiance and I have been going here over the past few years and it is easily our favorite Sushi spot in the Boston Area. We find ourselves coming back anytime we have an excuse to celebrate! The food is always so fresh and the specialty maki are always so creative. Some of our favorites include the South Side Roll, Citrus Summer Roll and Mambo Roll. You also can't go wrong with any of the standard maki. The staff is also always so kind, attentive and informative, which only enhances the experience every time!

Okay. White, New Englander named Alex opens a sushi restaurant in a random suburb of Boston. Recipe for mediocrity. But SushiCo is far from it. The sushi here is very fresh (Alex told me he got an order of snow crab that he sent back to the distributor because it didn't meet his quality standards). I love that he is creative. Doesn't cross the line to "fusion" per se, but definitely a good blend of Japanese (authentic to freshness, taste, presentation vs. what I've experienced in Japan) and American (thiccccc slices of fish). My tummy thanks you for opening in such a convenient location, while my bank account curses you Alex. What a neighborhood gem. A+ for service, quality, taste.

Good sushi, not just for Boston (an annoying but sometimes necessary qualifier). When it comes to sushi, I can be a bit of a purist, not a fan of garnishes and toppings, which to me feels like too much bells and whistles when you should let the quality of the fish shine on its own. The sushi here does have a lot going on, but there's attention paid to detail and making sure the flavors and textures work together, everything comes together really well. We came on the early side so were able to snag a table without a reservation, but recommend making one for Friday/weekend. Beautiful space - I couldn't stop staring at the giant mural of a fish. For starters, highly recommend the sesame noodles. They use a thin soba and not too much dressing, which I appreciate. Light, flavorful, a nice palette opener for all the fish you'll consume. Octopus salad was good (just wish there were more of it), with beautiful knife work in the cucumber on the side. Super impressive when chefs take such pride in the presentation. For my main, I got the 6-piece sashimi and the spicy tiger roll, but what I should have done was order more from the nigiri menu to try more pieces. We went with the special black cod and it was torched to perfection. Staff, including owner Alex, were all super nice! Lots of regulars, always a good sign. On a side note: love the staff t-shirts (do they sell those? There were neat stacks by our table), especially the one that had "More sushi, less drama," or something to that effect, on the back. Convenient location in Newton Centre, big metered parking lot close by (parking is free after 6).

Excellent dinner at Sushico. A few points: * freshness is exceptional * flavors are outstanding especially the prepared foods or flavored sushi items but don't overlook the edamame with truffle oil * truly premium cut of fish available * very ample/large sushi portion sizes/cuts of fish * good vibe/ambience All in all and exceptional experience and look forward to returning and highly recommend

What a gem this place is! The Spicy Yellowtail , Citrus Summer Roll, and Ora King Salmon with Mango rolls were perfect!! Great bar area, quiet dinner music in the background, and the service was very laid back but attentive. I'm so glad I found SushiCo.

This is our second time returning! It's a 30 minute drive from us but we don't mind at all. The food is exceptionally fresh, and the fish is visibly vibrant as a result of it. Everything is tasty and remarkable quality. It's an intimate experience. You communicate with the chef for a reservation and chef Alex waits on your order. We ordered the Chef's Choice for two option 2 and it was amazing as anticipated. Some say the prices are high, I'd like to say they are pretty standard, considering a price for a special maki roll falls just under 20 dollars. 10/10! Will be back for more. Give it a try!

Yellowtail jalapeno - must get!
Gloria H.

After some Yelp sleuthing for dinner in Newton, we settled on Sushico. The restaurant has a modern and elegant ambiance and friendly service. We got to try a variety of their dishes and I had some really tasty items. Must get - Yellowtail jalapeno - super fresh and tender melt-in-your-mouth fish, crunchy jalapeno, tasty sauce. Definitely one of my favorite crudos I've had in the past year. - Unnamed roll - I can't figure out what this roll was called (they might not sell it anymore), but it had tuna, chili crunch, and microgreens on top. It was my favorite roll that we tried! Flavors, textures, and fish were all on point. Good - Tuna with shiso - very tender tuna, fragrant shiso - Salmon avocado roll - fresh and tasty - King roll - very interesting combination of ingredients (salmon, avocado, mango, veggies) Meh - Sushi tacos - I was really looking forward to these after seeing them in reviews, but I wasn't a fan. The ceviche taco was sweet and didn't have much savory flavor, and the tuna taco didn't have much flavor. These could be okay dipped in soy sauce, but I think the other dishes we had were better. Overall, I loved the yellowtail jalapeno and the roll I can't remember the name of. The items are not cheap -- $8 for a miso soup? what's in it? -- but they clearly put a lot of care into sourcing their ingredients and are passionate about fish and sushi. Everything was fresh, yummy, and inventive. And it was more filling than I expected! I would love to come back and try more rolls and raw appetizers in the future.

They give you the little shrunken hand towels for your table. They have a range of appetizers that are unique; I like that their menu has things you don't see everywhere. We ordered pickled vegetables which were interesting, and the wasabi shumai (I recommend this - shumai but with a kick). We ordered 5 rolls which is a good amount for two. Their signature roll is delicious and comes with a sauce that adds some sweetness and flavor compared to soy sauce. The other rolls were also very tasty, and inventive. I don't remember the names but you can't go wrong. The fish is high quality, melt-in-your-mouth. I would certainly come back here for other occasions. Ice water is ridiculous in the winter, and it's also disgusting with germs. I got you nice salmon, teriyaki lunch, special, which comes with two things that need to be dipped, but no sauce for them. Comes with broccoli and carrot that needs to be cut, but no knife. Carrot was not quite cooked. Soup and salad were good. Salmon dinner was excellent. Prices are decent. This could be a great restaurant if they would pay attention.

Food: Everything in the platter we ordered was high quality and highlighted the unique tastes of the fish. Even the simple rolls like the yellowtail and the california carried their weight and really revealed how good they can be with a little extra care. Atmosphere: I can't say too much because I didn't dine in, but the decor was simple and inviting. Service: The staff that greeted me did so with a smile and the short exchange was as pleasant as can be. To top it off, the sushi chef was clearly enjoying his work and was doing it all with a smile as well.

You always remember your first, and while Shogun doesn't have the distinction of being the first piece of sushi I ever tried, it is the first sushi restaurant I was taken to when I asked my parents for more. I couldn't have known how lucky I was at the time. It's simple, friendly interior. The comfort of its space, small without being cramped, cozy without being claustrophobic. Years later, when I visited Japan for the first time, I would realize that it was simply authentically Japanese. And the sushi! I've been to Japan, I live in California, but to this day it is the standard to which I judge every piece of sushi I eat. The fish was always fresh and flavorful, the rice perfectly seasoned, and they had bar none the best spicy mayo I have ever tasted. Seriously, the spicy scallop gunkan was the greatest thing I have ever had the pleasure to eat. If you never ordered the spicy tuna salad appetizer, I am so sorry you missed out. This brings us to the real heart of Shogun for me: Ito-San. Jiro may dream of sushi, but I dream of Ito-san's sushi. From the first moment I stepped in the door in the mid 90's to the last time I was able to stop by in 2023, Ito was there. The incredible kindness he showed me for nearly 3 decades of my life is not to be undersold. As he watched me go through countless milestones in my own life, he also shared his and his families own. Even if his sushi was lousy he would have still been one of my favorite people on this planet. But of course, his sushi was top class. This is starting to feel like a eulogy, and as far as I know no one has died. But something has been lost. Perhaps to you it was just a restaurant. But to me, Shogun Sushi was a revelation, and an institution, and a place of intense nostalgia. Knowing I can never go back is deeply saddening. At the same time, I sincerely wish Ito-San and the rest of the staff a well earned retirement. If any of you are reading this, I hope you know that every time I eat sushi I will be thinking of your restaurant, and everything it meant to me.

This was the absolute worst Japanese food experience for my family EVER. (Go to Uni - same price and no comparison of quality). First, we checked that there were gluten free options (there were according to the menu) because I have celiac disease. I was informed that nearly all the gluten free items indeed had cross contamination so couldn't be trusted. We ordered several items, asked the server to confirm with the chef before we ordered. She suggested we decide first and the chef could let us know if he/she could do it. First we ordered sushi, And edamame, my son and daughter ordered a main course, the uni Risotto, which was very, very strongly fishy tasting and some salmon crispy rice item, which was also disappointing. Everything came without order or reason, our sushi came out last, but not all of it, we got some sushi after we received our dessert. Eventually, I was told the mushrooms and the eggplant could be prepared safely. The eggplant was the second best item of the evening. The mushrooms were not palatable, they were in fact disgusting, truly. We had to repeatedly ask for water, a drink spilled and we asked for a replacement napkin, which we also never got. The sushi was pedestrian, the sweet chili sauce on the scallop roll tasted exactly like the sweet sauce you buy at Whole Foods. The spicy salmon was the best sushi item, and even that, the sauce was runny. The pickled ginger was great, but we received two slices for three rolls. The tuna sushi my son ordered was also okay, but certainly not worth the $$$. Ironically, the desserts were the only enjoyable items, even though one came before the sushi. I would not waste my money nor my time here, go to Uni, there is absolutely no comparison! So very disappointing.

We loved the madai uzusukuri, pork belly bao bun, miso black cod, tako, and sashimi (otoro, chutoro, king salmon)! Madai uzusukuri - the sauce was perfection and the dish was topped with some crunch, which made it delightful. The pork belly bao bun was fairly fatty (which I loved) and slightly salty. Tako was perfectly grilled, meaty with a tangy and mildly spicy sauce. And our favorite, miso black cod! Loved that it comes with soshito peppers. I'm biased because I love miso black cod, but this did not disappoint. Wonderful taste and great texture. Will need to come again to try their omakase.
