New sushi spot in Milpitas!! It was our first time here; we ended up landing on Sushi Umami when craving handrolls. Every photo of their food on Yelp looked beautiful and they definitely lived up to our expectations! They're located right by the busy intersection of Dixon Landing / Milpitas Blvd. We came in for a Friday dinner shortly after 5pm and were met without a wait, though it seemed to get much busier closer to 6:30-7pm. The space here is beautiful. You can tell that they were very intentional with how the restaurant was decorated. I loved how light and spacious it felt. Ordering is done via an iPad, and our food came out very quickly after we sent our orders in. As for what we got: + Omakase (9pc) ($50): Delicious! The fish tasted fresh. I think the only piece that I didn't love was the squid, and TBH the rice... the rice was a bit dry. On the bright side, presentation was beautiful! + Sashimi Box (18pc) ($52): I'd keep in mind that the fish selection is essentially the same as the omakase; had I realized this, I'd probably go for a roll next time lol. + Spicy Scallop Handroll ($8.50): A lil bit too much spicy mayo tbh, but the scallop tasted fresh and the handroll was well constructed! + Salmon Skin Handroll: LOOOOVE me a good salmon skin roll. It was a bit awkwardly constructed because there was a ton of salmon skin on one half of it and almost none on the other half, but nothing my chopsticks couldn't fix. There were only 2 servers working the entire restaurant, so things got a bit busy and it felt difficult to get their attention. It actually took longer for us to check out / get the bill than to get our food. But, the servers were generally friendly and we appreciated how quick the actual meal was!

Decided to try a new place. Fairly glad since it was a lovely experience. I went on a Friday evening and was seated after about 15-20mins. The interior is very clean and modern. You can choose between water or hot tea. Wasabi and ginger is to be ordered. The food was incredibly fresh. The miso soup was served very hot which is I really liked. I was pleasantly surprised by the simple spicy tuna roll as it was very tasty compared to all other spicy tuna rolls i've had. My partner ordered a fried mackerel and it was very juicy and meaty. The chef's sashimi special was very good especially the tuna and salmon and hamachi. The staff was super attentive and friendly as they kept coming over to ask how we were g and if we enjoyed our food.

To begin they do take reservations; we were seated promptly and immediately the servers brought hot tea/water. Very excellent initial service upon arrival despite being a full house with all the tables occupied and a line out the door on a Saturday evening. Interior decor was stunning, everything is brand new and reminiscent of Japan. I enjoyed the interior design and was very well lit. Onto the food review, the rolls first! Double Toro - 8.33/10 Sunshine - 8/10 Monster - 7/10 The double toro had excellent flavor topped with real wasabi. It has fatty tuna and salmon belly and a plethora of cucumber. I wish they had some other ingredients but they really do load up on the cucumber if that's what you like. This is most notably their most popular posted item, which is a good item, but not necessarily a "oh wow I HAVE to get this everytime I come" type of dish The sunshine roll was excellent addition as it is a crispier and crunchier roll that helps balance out the raw fish of the other dishes. Excellent option for a nice palate cleanser. The roll was HUGE, when it came out I was quite surprised and had to take a photo just to compare with my arm as a benchmark because normal photos did not do it justice . Monster roll was good, but it could not compete against the other two rolls as we ended up order another Sunshine and Double Toro in the second round. Most notably for the monster roll is that they included asparagus which was refreshing considering most rolls don't include that ingredient so, nice change of pace. We also ordered nigiri, most notably the salmon, tuna, and scallop. We also ordered the chefs recommended nigiri which they advised us to try as well. Overall the nigiri slices were fat! However the flavor wasn't anything special. Overall I would give the sashimi 8/10 as it was good not but out of this world, and they did put in some effort in presentation. All in all very solid sushi place if you are located near the area. It's position in the current market for sushi restaurants is strong albeit not the leader... (at this time) They do have opportunities to differentiate and create a signature item to truly elevate it to the next level to retain their customers for the future.

Friday night and my friends got a table before I got there so I didn't have to wait. There was a group of a few people waiting outside already though and I felt it was early for dinner. The restaurant felt on the smaller side but it was ok for a sushi spot. The parking situation was also ok. It was a small parking lot compared to to all they have to offer around the area, but just drive a loop and there will be someone pulling off, especially if they're just picking up orders for delivery or grabbing a quick boba drink. There's like 3 of them around so people are always coming and going. The service was spot on, I feel like as soon as I had an empty bowl or an empty plate, it was picked up right away (I love that) and my cup of water is filled pretty quickly once I drink it. Keep in mind this is a busy Friday night so they're packed and still pretty attentive, considering you're ordering off an iPad. Our food came out in good time. We got 5 rolls and they all came out at once. Look, I'm a sucker for A5 Wagyu so we got that roll and it was easily my favorite. I know I know I know, beef on sushi sounds weird or downright wrong, but you cannot go wrong with A5 and truffle mushroom. The Salmon Lover roll was my 2nd favorite because of the garlic chili oil topping. There was nothing spicy about it, but to me, it made the sushi flavor that much better. Double toro comes next. I'm not a wasabi fan so we asked for wasabi on the side instead of inside. We still got a hint of wasabi BUT honestly it's not a double toro without it. The Triple S ranked after, and then the lion king roll, but I only because these were basic rolls we can get anywhere else. That being said, the fish quality was good, coupled with great service. Love this spot and will be coming back.

I can't tell if this is the same restaurant that closed a few months ago and rebranded?? Anyways, the food was yummy, the service was a little chaotic, but overall good (: Warriors roll: 10/10 this was my favorite. Saucy and flavorful. Shrimp tempura was fried well so it had a good crunch Triple S: 10/10 also really good and saucy roll Lion king: 7/10 I liked the flavor but I think it was really heavy on the miso mayo and it took over also it didn't come torched Hand rolls: 8/10 all three were pretty good especially the umami hand roll Fried squid & soft shell crab: 10/10 fried well and the sauces complimented I came here on Saturday for dinner around 6 and was seated immediately. The plaza is a little crowded on weekends but parking is pretty easy. Will def be back again!

The seafood here was so fresh and everything left me wanting more! I came with my friends on a Friday night around 9:30 PM and were able to get seated right away. I got the Double Toro Roll which was so good! I'm not the biggest fan of wasabi, but the fresh wasabi complimented the roll really well. In addition, I got the Deluxe Chirashi which had a good variation of seafood including uni, sweet shrimp, salmon, scallops, etc. I am a scallop and toro lover and was really satisfied with the quality of the sashimi :) The owners were so friendly and constantly made sure everything was up to par, making our experience one of the best. Safe to say, this is one of my new favorite sushi spots in the bay area and I'll definitely come back in the near future!

I've seen this place go through some renames and I don't know if this is new or not. Came here with a group of 6 (~15% service charge for parties of 6 or more) and got seated quickly. The interior was nice and the service was also nice, however, they seemed a bit cluttered as it took a bit to get the check after requesting for it. We got the Warriors Roll, Salmon Lovers roll, and Triple S roll, with my favorite being the Triple S roll. Very fresh fish that melts in your mouth and the tempura shrimp in the roll was delicious. My only complaints would be that the prices are a little bit high (in my opinion but maybe b/c the fish was pretty fresh) and that I saw a spider on the wall, which doesn't really bother me but it might bother others. Still a good experience though.

Had such a great experience at Sushi Umami! Everything from the food to the service was on point. The fish was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and just overall delicious. Service was very attentive and friendly, and our food came out surprisingly fast which made the whole experience even better. The rolls were definitely the highlight. The Sunshine Roll was amazing -- soft shell crab with different fish like salmon, tuna, and hamachi. It had so many great textures and the sauce on top was sooo good. The Double Toro Roll was another standout. Super fresh, rich toro and it even had salmon belly inside which made it extra buttery and delicious. We also tried the Hamachi Truffle Crudo and wow... you can really taste the truffle, but it doesn't overpower the simplicity and freshness of the hamachi. Such a great balance of flavors. The Agedashi Tofu was light and crispy and soaked up the bonito sauce perfectly with the grated radish -- simple but done really well. Also had the Unagi Bento Box which was great and very satisfying. Overall everything was fresh, flavorful, and came out quickly with great service. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to because there are so many more things on the menu I want to try

Super unorganized... No one was really around to help with the waitlist when we got there as a party of 2. Theres a paper list with names but you can join on yelp too, except they ignore the yelp list and only call from the paper. We waited 30 mins to get seated and then another 30 plus for the two rolls we ordered. Got so hungry i ended up ordering fried squid to hold us over. The couple next to us sat after us but got all their food way faster cuz they ordered mostly hot stuff. The rolls took forever with only two ppl making sushi. Its so inefficient and they need to hire more staff to keep up. Our waitress kept passing by us to serve them without any update or acknowledgment. By the time our rolls came the couple was already done eating. Food was pretty mid and i dont get the hype. I dont plan to return.

Solid 5/5, for me! We really enjoyed our Friday night experience. Promptly seated and assisted by a friendly associate, we were offered an iPad to order from. Our food came out quickly and everything was fresh and delicious. We especially enjoyed the chirashi bowl, chicken cartilage, and double toro roll. We can't wait to come back soon to try everything else!

Amazing chirashi bowl with super fresh seafood--salmon, tuna, scallops, sweet shrimp, plus rich uni and ikura. The fried shrimp head added a nice crunch. The smaller uni, ikura, and egg yolk bowl was incredibly creamy and packed with umami. Great quality, well-balanced, and definitely worth it.

Found Sushi Umami on Yelp and decided to give them a try. Upon arrival, there was no one at the check in counter, and it wasn't until a party that arrived after us were seated that the chefs saw us and notified the servers. We chose bar seating and ordered sashimi box (18pc premium chef's choice), chef's choice nigiri (9 pc), salted edamame and house sake. My partner enjoyed the nigiri. The sashimi varied in freshness. I really enjoyed the chili garlic oil on one of the sashimi samples. The ika sashimi was too chewy and wasn't as fresh as I'd hope. They cooked it with a handheld torch gun in front of you if you sit at the bar. They had tablets where we placed our orders. The restaurant was clean and modern. The chefs spoke Chinese, and I overheard one of the kitchen support staff call one of the sushi chefs "pendejo."

We were debating whether mochi was blended into the dough or the cheese. Definitely worth trying if you're a mochi lover. The Salmon Shimeji Mushroom Spaghetti is listed as one of the more popular pasta dishes, and it earned that reputation. The cream and seafood flavors blended nicely. The risotto, however, was a bit of a letdown as it was way too salty for our taste. Since I mentioned we were celebrating a birthday, our waitress brought a sweet touch: two scoops of ice cream with a candle. We also ordered the matcha tiramisu, which was pleasant but not particularly memorable -- not overly sweet, but nothing that lingered either. Overall, La Casa Mia is a solid spot for Japanese-Italian fusion. I'd come back to explore more of the menu.

The chicken katsu curry set was easily the star of the table -- crispy cutlet over rice with thick, savory curry that had the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, and it came with a comforting bowl of miso soup. Even with the curry sauce, the katsu stayed crunchy to the last bite. The chicken katsu don brought a softer, homestyle vibe with fluffy egg, onions, and lightly sweet sauce soaking into the rice. Super comforting and satisfying without feeling too heavy. For appetizers, we tried the shrimp & vegetable katsu and the shrimp & oyster katsu. Everything came out hot and freshly fried with a light, crispy coating. The shrimp were juicy with a nice snap, while the oysters were rich and buttery inside with that perfect crunch outside. The miso soup and pickles rounded everything out nicely. If you're craving crispy katsu and hearty Japanese curry, this spot definitely hits the spot.

Although Taishoken is known for their tsukemen, I'll always opt for mazesoba if I see it on a menu. The mazesoba here is easily some of the best I've had in the Bay Area. The included piece of chashu is well-seasoned, fall apart tender and had a good balance of lean to fatty meat. The noodles are cooked to perfection and have a really nice chew to them. There is just the right amount of sauce in the dish, and the raw egg yolk adds a wonderful richness that coats each strand of noodle when mixed. Included with your mazesoba is a small side of vinegar. I would definitely recommend trying out the mixed mazesoba on its own -- without the vinegar, and adding in the vinegar about half-way in in order to try out a completely different flavor profile of the noodles. The acidity of the vinegar cuts through the richness and keeps you coming back for bite after bite. If you've never tried mazesoba before, I can't recommend it enough at Taishoken.
