Wow! I was very impressed by this place. I've stuck to the same few sushi places around my university for too long and decided to branch out and see what other sushi places Delaware has to offer. When I first pulled up to the restaurant, I wasn't convinced since it sits in a strip mall right next to a Walgreens. Once I walked in, I thought I was at another local sushi joint back home in Los Angeles. I was surprised to see how nice the ambiance was. My boyfriend and I came here for date night and we start to order our food and notice the nice combinations of sushi there was and when our food got to us, it was game over. The fish was so fresh and every ingredient came together so fantastically. My boyfriend didn't indulge in dessert, but I got their green tea ice cream and it was a perfect cap to the delicious food we had received. Once we got the bill, I was surprised at how much of a deal we got. The quality of the food and the environment should have been triple the amount of our bill. Below average service, below average food. Won't even bother to talk about the free salad and free miso soup, cause those were pathetic. Tempura appetizer, whoever made it didn't get the memo, such dense food like broccoli doesn't make good tempura, and onion tempura is also like a bad imitation of an onion ring. Sad. Age Tofu, the tidy and well presented concept of Japanese cooking is entirely lost here, the Tofu are mostly oddly shaped, the batter breaks off once you try to pick it up. The upside is the sauce is ok. Sushi Deluxe, the fish isn't cut properly, the tendons is easily found in most cuts of fish. The California roll is pretty much the most basic, but the proportions feels of, too much cucumber vs avocado and crab meat. Bearable. Sashimi Deluxe, it's ok. Same problem with the tendon in the snapper, but the rest are ok. Green tea will cost you $3 a tea bag. The weirdest thing is the service, the waitress seemed to be rushing us out even when the restaurant is less than half full, she supersonic speed cleared any dishes. She asked if we needed anything else, when we said no, she took it as cue to clear the table, even though I wasn't finished with my soup. Never again. read more

This is my "go to" spot in Delaware when it comes to sushi. I abuse this place. Like...2-3 times a week at times, which is nonsense. Been going here for years, and strangely I think the same people have been serving me for years. I think. They are always really kind and attentive here. I've never had a bad meal and over the years their sushi has always been terrific. They still have the same size pieces of fish they did 6-7 years ago in the typical rolls I get: salmon avocado, yellow tail tuna, & salmon roe. I don't think you can go wrong here. We find this place on Door Dash and decided to give it a try. Philly roll comes with smoked salmon which sets it apart from other places. The Hanna roll has several different fish in it and was delicious as well. We enjoyed the first take out so much we only waited 2 days before ordering again from their website. We got the sushi for 2 and the sashimi for 2 along with various rolls. The fish was decent. Not the best I've had but for the price it was decent. I mean it's a sushi place in a shopping mall strip so what can you expect. It's better than chinese buffet sushi at least. I guess when you're in Newark DE your options are pretty limited. Spider roll was pretty good. We also shared their udon in soup and it was very odd because it was sweet. Never had sweet udon. Overall we ended up spending around 170 bucks before tip for 5 people which isn't terrible. Oh there was a scale on one of the pieces of salmon sashimi. That was disconcerting. Went to this restaurant for both sushi and main dish. Had O-zen style dinner with tempura, negimaki, yuzu chicken with the usual side dishes. For sushi had Ikura, Saba, Tako, and soft shell crab roll. The sushi was very good, the ikura was firm and flavorful with bright color and good juice. The tako was sliced thin enough to be tender but thick and large enough to have some tooth to it. The saba was sub-par though, not quite firm enough with some bland flavor. However, most places in Delaware do not have great saba. The main dish was good, the tempura was average. The negimaki however, was well made and the beef was well cooked without being over cooked at all. The yuzu chicken was standard breaded chicken, the sauce was bright with clear citrus flavor. All in all I felt this was a good meal and well worth the price. The wait staff was very attentive, helpful, and pleasant. I would definitely eat here again. read more

My husband and I ate at this place last night, and I have to say I was VERY impressed. We have eaten at every single sushi restaurant within a 20 mile radius, and this is by far the best. I started with "Clear" soup, which was sorta like Miso but with mushrooms, seaweed and chicken. It was delicious. I also ordered Green Salad for $2.50, it was lettuce, cucumber and tomato, typical Japanese restaurant salad, but much, much bigger. Also the dressing was really nice ginger dressing, fresh ginger, not the mayonnaise-y stuff you normally get. Not too sweet and not to pickle-y. They had so much stuff on the menu it was hard to choose, so I just ordered my favorites, a califormia roll and a Mexican roll. The cali was good but the Mexican was so friggin delicious I had to order another one. I never had anything like it! I don't eat raw fish, but sometimes I try the spicy tuna and it, too was divine. I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone with a hankering for sushi. This place is way better than Mikimoto, Takumi, any of 'em. read more

Sushi Sumo is a magical place when it comes to fish. It is a special place for me, and I love eating here. Their decor is that of a fancy Japanese restaurant, and it definitely holds to that standard! My favorite dish to order is Sashimi for 2, which gives you 36 pieces of fish (in addition to soup and salad for two) for $47. It is a bit pricey, but if you have someone who loves raw fish as much as you do, it is just about the best option. The dish is pretty much a tasting of salmon, yellowtail, tuna, assorted white fish, sea bass, fatty tuna, octopus, and whatever seasonal fish they may have. Their salmon is so oily and buttery (in a good way) that it literally melts in your mouth. The tuna has a smooth texture and a blast of flavor, unlike the limp, fishy tuna that I find at most restaurant. The yellowtail is gummy and has this bold taste that is so good that it sends chills throughout my body. The salmon, yellowtail, and tuna are my favorites, but the rest of the fish is also incredible. My go-to dishes when I don't have someone to share the Sashimi for 2 are the sashimi deluxe and the salmon teriyaki. The management is very accommodating; since my favorite three fish are tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, I asked if I could get the sashimi deluxe with only those three fish, and they made the change with a minimal $3 extra charge. Of course there is an A La Carte menu, and if there is any fish that you would like to try, this is the place. The quality of their fish is far superior to the other sushi restaurants in the area. If you are ordering sushi and you don't mind sitting at the sushi bar instead of at a booth, it's definitely an experience to watch the chefs prepare the fish. Not to mention, for sitting at the sushi bar, they give customers a complimentary tasting dish. The one that I've gotten a few times was raw salmon in a wasabi sauce. I normally dislike wasabi, but in this dish, it was excellent. They have a great lunch menu for 9.95-10.95 for roll combos, kitchen specials, and bento boxes from 11:30-3pm on weekdays. I have gotten the roll combo and unagi don (eel over rice) and both were delightful. There is an extensive sake menu with many different fruity flavors, but I have not tried any of them. They give delicious Milkita candies with your check. In my opinion, much better than the Guava candies that I typically receive at Asian restaurants. read more

I have had the huge sushi combo that comes on a boat here and it had some of the best sushi i have ever eaten on it. I went here on a so called first date...that is another review..lol anyway. I had the spicy girl roll it was dynamite!!!!! All of the food was freshly prepared and worth the price. When you are seated the waiter greets you warm moist clothes to wipe your hands...good touch. The restaurant decor was typical for an Japanese restaurant. This sushi spot is great for lunch, you get a choice of $9.95 for 2 rolls, with miso soup or salad, or $10.95 for a bento box, which is the best sushi lunch special I know around the area. My friend and I both ordered the 2 rolls with miso soup. The food arrived very quickly. The rolls were great, the taste, quality and appearance are everything you would expect from any decent surburban sushi serving joint. This Japanese restaurant just opened today for business. A co-worker & I have seen it over the past few days and wanted to check the place out. The sushi we had was pretty good. My co-worker got seafood udon and said it was terrific. We ran into 2 other co-workers there. They had gotten the "lunch" boxes. They said ti was really good and a lot of food. The staff was very friendly and service was pretty good. I can't wait to go back again to try more of their cuisine. I don't have to review this place, read the other Yelper's comments and you'll see what I mean. This place rocks. First off, in the entrance there is a type of Taiko. Its fun to play, in my head I'm an amazing drummer. The interior is beautiful. There is something about the Delaware area and its ability to hide places. Who would have thought that next to a Walgreen this place would exist! Its clean with a contemporary Japanese finish. The Service is always on par. The wait staff is friendly, quick, and attentive. When you sit down you will receive a nice warm damp towel to clean your hands with. The presentation of the food is organized and appetizing. The food is uh-mazing. There is a HUGE selection of sushi and every month they have a new list of special rolls. How they can come up with new variations of the same dish is beyond me. I only enjoy there creations. My top 5 rolls: Dynamite, Phoenix, Spicy Thai Girl, Spicy Tuna, Christmas roll (seasonal). Just eat here you will not regret it, unless you have a really bad fish allergy. Sushi Sumo is by far the best sushi in northern Delaware! It is very clean, and the staff is friendly. The fish is really fresh. They get their fish 2-3 times a week. They won't order more than what they think will sell. We sit at the sushi bar and The sushi chef suggests things for me to try. I'm TOTALLY hooked on their salmon sashimi and uni (sea urchin! ), and he's had us try jelly fish!!! I know!!! Crazy, right??? Btw, it has the texture of seaweed salad. If you love salmon, try the golden salmon roll. OMG! Sooooo good. It's NOT on the menu, unless it's a special that week, but it def worth trying. ACTUALLY...ask for the special roll menu. Best Sushi place in Delaware, I recommend you sit at the bar, not only here, but anywhere you eat sushi. I can't guarantee it but most of the time you receive an appetizer called "Kiss of Fire" which is to die for. It's very hot so take caution by either eating it in small bites or letting it sit. The sauce on kiss of fire is AWESOME! From the staff to the food, I've never had a bad experience. If I had to nit pick and find anything wrong, I'd have to say the menu's are a bit old and dirty. But we're talking about the menu's which compared to everything else is trivial. The bathrooms are very clean and decorative, for me to take away a star on just the menus would be so wrong so it's 5/5. Go here!!!! read more

Sushi and service were pretty good, the sushi did not disappoint. I usually get a few different rolls and some pieces of Sashimi, usually squid or smoked salmon. The flavor and freshness were great. I wasn't let down and will definitely eat there again. Just an FYI, I have eaten at Sushi Yama in Middletown and the menu, decor, plating, and quality of food is all very similar. If you love sushi, you -must- go. This is as good as it gets when it comes to comparing Sushi in Delaware. The quality of sushi is excellent. They're tasty, fresh and the Chef Specials are always fun to try out. It's a Japanese restaurant and as expected -- the menu is bleak when ordering outside of sushi. Expect the normal teriyakis and bento boxes for lunch. I cannot say I have a favorite sushi from them as I love them all and so does my wife. If you like hand rolls, they have a nice selection of them as well. All the wait staff are nice and kind -- kind of weird at times. Weird being my daughter gets touched -a lot- by the staff. They always like touching her blonde hair always commenting on how nice it is and how beautiful she is. I take it as compliments and it appears they mean no harm on what they're doing but still none the less kind of weird having adult women touching your kids hair on every other visit! Last week I came to sushi sumo with my husband and one of my co workers for lunch. I was excited to try some tempura rolls for the first time after being told that this restaurant had the best ones. The decor inside was ok, not too special. After I ordered, if took around 20 minutes for my sushi to arrive. There was hardly anyone else eating there, so I didn't know what would take so long. When my roll arrived, I expected a roll that looked more "put together." The batter was coming off of the shrimp and overall looked unappetizing. The outside was too thick and tasted nothing like I heard it would be like. The shrimp was flavorless and bland. Worst of all, there were no waiters around that were attentive, so we waited another HALF HOUR to get refills on our drinks, which were clearly empty a while ago. Bottom line, no I will not return for sushi or anything here. My experience here was hectic. read more

There are a ton of sushi places in the area. This one is a win. If you want quick take-out sushi, go somewhere else. They are not fast. But if I wanted fast fish, I would go out to a lake and catch them myself. I'd highly recommend the sushi party trays as they are a great variety of sushi and the quantity certainly matches the price while maintaining great quality. I've taken out and eaten in at Sushi Sumo five times over the past year, without one bad incident. Service has been polite, professional, and very friendly. Great place to go if you're with family, friends, or a date and want to relax, enjoy your company, and eat great sushi. Also keep in mind, they have private dining rooms. So if you're bringing a group, feel welcome to call ahead and ask for a room. I've even showed up with my family and they've offered the a private room. I ordered the ultimate dragon roll and my friends had sushi tempura, and udon noodles. I've had plenty of dragon rolls that tasted a lot better and a little more fresh. Also the presentation of the dish in general was very basic. We all tasted each other's dishes and the sushi tempura was basic. The udon noodles were good I will say that. But just good not great. If the waitress had a better attitude they may have gotten 3 stars instead of two. And the reason why the made it to two stars was because the bathroom was immaculate. read more

I'm taking away a star because I tried some of their tempura dishes and rolls with tempura in them. I would not recommend. The batter was way too thick and just tasted bland. I also would not recommend the fried squid/octopus...way inferior compared to those in italian restaurants and also covered in thick batter. Best to stick with simple classic rolls here and stay away from tempura. I find a lot of speciality rolls are too overwhelmed with mayonaise and sauces (reminded me of Las Vegas all you can eat wholesale sushi). The classic rolls are still very tasty though. read more

On Sundays they are only open for dinner, so you can't take advantage of the lunch specials! We arrived just as they opened at 3 p.m. We were seated in the dark dining room area. Our first time trying a Maryland roll - cream cheese, avocado and crab. It was almost like having a Lobster roll from your favorite seafood place. Very yummy! The service was great in the beginning, but as more people started arriving it tapered off. We finished eating and waiting about 15 minutes before she came back to clear, ask if we wanted dessert or refill our drinks. My companion finished up with a dessert called a "bomb". It was 3 kinds of sherbet covered in white chocolate and drizzled with milk chocolate. She remarked "it's like eating healthy, this really isn't dessert and I don't feel guilty". Best sashimi everrrr. Every time my boyfriend and I come here, we always get the Sashimi For Two (comes with 2 small lettuce salads, 2 miso soups, and a 36-piece giant plate of sashimi). The sashimi plate is always laid out in cute designs every single time. We love that they have red bean ice cream too (though the bowl it comes in makes it hard to scoop out ice cream w/o it slipping upward and out of the other side). A couple of times we've gotten sushi and some of the appetizers. None too memorable (just okay... Or I remember sometimes too much sauce). But we may be biased because we love the sashimi that much. Let me start by saying that I work in the food industry as a server myself. Me and my friends arrived at Sushi Sumo promptly at 9:18 p.m. The hostess/server asked us whether we would be dining in or taking out. We replied that we would be dining in. She very aggressively told us that the restaurant would be closing at 10 p.m. After seating us she was very rude. She continued to stare at us and check to see if we were ready to order, because she was in a rush to leave. All of us only got miso soup and sushi, but my one friend wanted and Bento box which she was denied because it would "take too long and we had to be out by 10". I thought this experience was extremely unwelcoming and I will not be back. The food was good, but the poor hospitality was a huge turn off. GO TO OKURA OR KYOTO read more
