I need to start by saying that sushi & sashimi are my all-time favorite foods. I've traveled to Seattle, Boston, and Philly JUST to eat sushi. That said, my fiance' and I discovered Sushi Sumo on Yelp about 6 months ago and boy are we glad we did. We've come here at least twice per month since. Not only is the fish fresh, but it's CONSISTENTLY fresh. Consistency is key. I would eat here over Morimoto in Philadelphia over and over again. The staff are very nice, and the chefs are enthusiastic at the sushi bar. This is the ONLY place in DE worth a damn to get sushi at. Again, you just can't go wrong when the fish is fresh, the avocado is GREEN, the staff is friendly, and the prices are fair. My favorites are the King Salmon Sashimi, the Salmon Skin roll, and the Hana roll. LOVE this place and I so look forward to my bi-weekly dine-in's here! read more

Everything is fine except that sashimi lunch （9pcs of raw fish）includes 1 fake crab stick，which is ridiculous. Otherwise, rolls are great. Seafood Tempura in lunch box is better than my expectation, which has stuffed seafood, more like seafood pancake. Overall, good place for casual dining. This is my SPOT. Sushi sumo has the best sushi around newark without a doubt. I've been coming here for years. I will say that sometimes depending on the server you get like you might be waiting a while before they stop at the table again, but they still deserve 5 stars. Sometimes they try to get you to order on a paper with a pencil and they drop it at your table but again, that depends on your server. I never regret eating lunch or dinner here. That might sound like a strange way to begin a review, but it seems that these days, many dining experiences are a total shot in the dark. Few places live up to the price they are asking. This is especially true of Japanese restaurants I can count on great food and attentive service at Sushi Sumo. The sushi is very very good. It is fresh and well prepared. While I am not a sushi aficionado, I have had a lot of (East Coast) sushi over the years and I have tried everything in my immediate area. Sushi Sumo is only one of two places that I'll get sushi in the area. The other menu items are also very good. Ordered Sushi Sumo for an 80th birthday "party" we had during COVID. They really went above and beyond for our meal! We ordered individual sushi and a few rolls from the a-la-carte menu, but they took extra time to arrange it beautifully on party trays. The best part ....besides how delicious everything was... were the labels they made for the fish (I tried to include some angles where you can see in the pics) so we didn't have to guess what we were eating. They even surprised us with a special birthday dessert . I ordered 1 day in advance, and food was fresh and ready by the time I arrived. Nice treat for a special night in, but I would also highly recommend Sushi Sumo for any holiday gatherings you might have coming up. We have some particular eaters in the family. The sushi is good, but my shrimp Tempura roll was cold. Shrimp tempura is best when it's still warm otherwise it becomes chewy. My boyfriend had a shrimp teriyaki bento box and he enjoyed it. The seafood tempura in his box was still warm so I enjoyed some of his. The waitress over checked on us if you know what I mean. We will try again. read more

This was the best sushi I have had in years. Greeting you with a warm towel and smiling face. Then I ordered a hot sake. It is always hard to pour the first cup as the bottle is to hot but it was delivered with the cup already filled. The fish was extra fresh and you could taste the difference. They have a "house" mackerel that you must try. The owners are the sushi chefs and they were numerous repeat customers. I have gone to many Japansee restaurants that no longer have quail eggs but I was able to get them last night! I was in the mood for some sushi today and decided to look up local Sushi bars. I got a few recommendations on a few other places but decided to try this place after reading several reviews. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed the cleanliness and atmosphere. I was greeted immediately and assisted with my order. Although I was only ordering 1 roll which only took less than 5 minutes, I noticed the decor inside and really feel in love. Sushi Sumo is a very relaxing place and very quite. This place is great especially for a sushi place in a strip mall! Attentive service and fresh sushi. We tried the salmon skin roll which was delicious. We ordered 3 specialty rolls that did not disappoint. The Rainbow roll and the Sexy Girl roll (shrimp tempura with tuna) were delicious. I also enjoyed the Hairy Mexican but note anything on the menu that says crab is actually fake crab. That's a bit deceiving but I'm still a fan of the place. We went here for lunch today and it has to be some of the freshest sushi I've had in a long time! The sashimi melted in your mouth and the sushi rolls had some of the usuals as well as a bunch of awesome unique choices. We ordered a bunch of choices and then shared among us. I didn't have one roll I didn't like and the only fish I wasn't a fan of (and that's cause of taste - not freshness) was the bass. The service was awful and the food was just ok. literally had to stop at wawa after because i was still hungry after waiting over an hour for my rolls. We were one of three tables in there with plenty of staff. My friends didn't get the drinks they ordered. I live and work in vegas where the food and service are always on point. Sushi Sumo used to be our favorite sushi place to go in Newark. Their lunch specials (Mon-Sat) are an amazing deal! We used to go sit at the sushi bar and the chef would give free samples and they were pretty yummy. I got their sashimi lunch with salad and a bowl of rice (about $9). The sashimi pieces were sizable and fresh. Also their presentations are always very pretty! My husband got chicken Yakiudon and he liked it. The restaurant is clean and pretty quiet during lunch time. The chefs and waitresses are always friendly and welcoming. If you are in a mood for Sushi, Sushi Sumo is a place to go! Best sushi in our town. Finally, I got some great sushi in our small town. I enjoyed the golden dragon rolls and California rolls. The Lobster tail tempura, golden leave and tobigo are on the top of golden dragon rolls, with eel and avocado inside. The taste is very yummy and texture. And California rolls are very fresh. I absolutely loved the rolls I've had from here! I have even ordered some of there platters, and they are amazing! You definitely get what you're paying for. The staff is friendly and the food was made quickly. (Side note: I've only ordered take out from here and never done dune in, so my experience is based off this). Got the 18pcs Sashimi Deluxe which is value for $$ and the fishes are fresh less the tuna which could be better. I've mostly tasted the chief specialty rolls, and yep they taste as good as they look! The chief really puts in his own flare when placing these delicious roll pieces on the plate. The presentation is wonderful! This is a nice place to go to for special occasions. For large parties, Sushi Sumo does have two private rooms. So be sure to call ahead of time to reserve the room. Sushi Sumo does get pretty crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. Parking might get a bit crowded, but it's at a shopping plaza, so it should be fine. I was using DoorDash and unsure how to specify the importance of being GF without being present with a server so I called multiple times. They assured me on the phone that they would use real crab over imitation crab, because imitation contains wheat. They were so kind and helpful!
