Ordered the same meal I always order....chicken and steak teriyaki SPICEY but no rice, just meat and vegetables. I was very disappointed. There were too many onions,carrots, mushrooms and Zucchini which I don't like. My platter was like someone poured a cup of soup in it. I love onions but with all the liquid on the platter it seemed as if it simply wasn't grilled right. Our family has eaten there for years but this has left me with a bad taste in my mouth and worse a bad memory in my head. I sort of wish I hadn't included a tip. I actually picked all the things I didn't like in it and still couldn't eat it, so it's waiting for the Tuesday trash pickup. read more

The poke place I was originally supposed to go to was closed that day :( so I decided to check out this place next door. Looked like a pretty solid menu so I decided to get takeout. I got a shrimp tempura roll and a hibatch shrimp combo meal. After I got the food I walked out and had an overwhelming smell of urine greet me as I walk to my car which was gross (random but says something about the strip mall I was getting food from). I get home and eat the sushi first. Not bad! Fresh and flavorful. I then started eating my hibatchi meal. Super bland with no real flavors. Barely any shrimp but lots of noodles and veggies. I actually had to dump the sauces that came with it so it would taste better. Overall eh? Meal. The prices weren't too bad and I would def. Come back for sushi since they tasted great. read more

For the price, their food is both good for taste and portion. Chicken teriyaki, beef&shrimp teriyaki and salmon&shrimp teriyaki were great. I couldn't finish my salmon and teriyaki shrimp rice. I like their rolls as it is chaper than other sushi places but tastes good! Hot mama roll is my favorite so far. Eel and avocado roll was good too. Hawaiian roll was mediocre. Granted, "Japanese" fast food hibachi isn't high end cuisine. But it can still be fresh and flavorful. Tokyo Express delivers neither. Fried rice is heavy but tastes only of salt and oil. Same with the chicken, which was surprisingly tough. With this sort of thing, you're looking for tender chicken but with a crisp, brown crust. This was like someone's forgotten chicken cheesesteak had tried to drown itself in soy sauce, lost in regret. Vegetables were limp, failing to deliver the bit of freshness and texture that they should. My companion had sushi, and said it was adequate. There are many hibachi steakhouses and sushi restaurants within a few miles of my house, many of which contain the word "express" in their names. Last night I decided to try one of them, having not ventured out for Japanese food since I've lived in Delaware. I selected Tokyo Express for having a couple more stars on Yelp than the next closest establishment, and I was disappointed. I read several reviews off this page, good and bad, before I went. The restaurant is part of a strip mall, like many Japanese restaurants in New Castle County, and inside there are some tables and a counter to order at. While I can't complain about the affordability of my hibachi filet and cucumber roll ($11 all told), I can complain about other things. The decorations in the restaurant are tacky. It appeared that the owners didn't want to put too much effort into them, just in case the place gets shut down and they have to take it all off the walls. The floor was somewhat dirty, as were some of the tabletops, but my guest and I pulled up a table and waited for the food. The sushi roll was underwhelming. The cucumber was cut into thin strips and rolled in rice, as is custom, but it tasted dry and lacked flavor. It was a normal eight-piece sliced roll, and though not particularly exciting, it wasn't bad either. The hibachi filet was more displeasing. The fried rice was old and clumped together, making for chewy mouthfuls that were hard to swallow. The fried vegetables weren't amazing, with onions undercooked and carrots overcooked. The steak, cubed and grilled, was slightly overcooked, although the portion was fine. I ate most of the meal and took the rest home in the styrofoam box it was served in, but looking at the food later that night I decided just to throw away the rest. While I am sure that this restaurant is good for some people and some occasions, it was not great to sit down and eat at. We were the only customers in the restaurant the entire time we were eating. The staff seemed detached if not sullen, and wouldn't make eye contact with me. They deliver, so if you want mediocre food delivered to your door, this is the place to go. As for me, I'll be eating at a different hibachi grill from now on. read more

This used to be our go to spot in 2013/2014 we divided to go back since we haven't had it in years. Unfortunately it definitely not what it used to be. The service was good attentive prompt and courteous. The restaurant itself could use a good scrub down and update. The curtains on the front window were torn, and the curtain rods not in tack. They have a wood frame around the register with what looked to once be wrapped with saran wrap. The remnants of the saran wrap hung off of the wooden frame. I'm assuming this was a Covid thing. Now to the good part, the food, the sushi used to actually be very good here. Unfortunately it was a hot mess. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, and my husband ordered a crunchy crab roll and I don't know how he ate them. He must've really been hungry because they were not good at all. I figured I was gonna get sick because the tuna was warm but it's raw.. I ordered the hibachi steak and shrimp, and unfortunately the steak and shrimp was overly cooked. The flavor of the rice, or the lack of flavor in the rice was upsetting. It's definitely going downhill since we used to go there. I don't think I willI'll ever go out of my way again to visit this restaurant, unless they do a major overhaul and every aspect. I came here because the salad restaurant next door was closed. Everything on the menu seemed very well priced. When I first came here, they had worn down pictures of their food on the wall, I still appreciated it though because I always like looking at what I might eat. Now they have renovated and added a poke bar. I'm not a particular fan of the plastic takeaway containers when you're dining in but I guess that might be a cost thing? I didn't try any of their rolls. I got their chicken rice boxes. Their chicken is consistently dry/overcooked. But if you're in a hurry and on a budget, this would work if you're craving for Japanese food. read more

I hate to rate it like that. With my experience dining from here, became an utter nightmare. First, the lady behind the counter just gazed at me unpleasantly the whole damn time. I thought nothing of it since I was being serviced by a gentleman. While I'm waiting for my food, my ears were ringing due to one of their fridges. Quite annoying with that continuance sound. Definitely a call in need of a repair or perhaps replacement! Finally, eager to devour since I haven't eaten anything all day, but ended up only taking a few bites. I had Steak and Shrimp Teriyaki with Fried Rice. It was very dry. Perhaps the meat was old since it tasted a bit spoiled. Hence why I only took a couple bites. That night ended up with an upset stomach. Than that carried over to a week and a half of the stomach bug. Can't count on their freshness. Just won't be returning. Done deal big No No. read more

This place is my favorite adorable sushi place in Newark and I order all time. Their grill menu is also all delicious with large portions. They are taking a lot of precautions in reference to COVID-19 (masks, no dine in, pickup section away from kitchen, delivery, etc.). Also I am pretty sure they are offering their full menu which in the current time is very much appreciated. Food is all fresh and have always received my order correctly. Again this is an affordable place so it is not top of the line ingredients but not questionable ones that make you hesitate to eat it or the no name brand to the brand name kind of comparison. I definitely recommend trying this place out if you have not, and I will continue to order every time I get a sushi craving!! read more

I struggle to not order Tokyo Express if I am in the area. The sushi is high quality and super affordable. The staff is terrific. It can be tough to get through to order sometimes, but just keep calling. The lemon roll is insanely good--tempura shrimp, cream cheese, topped with salmon and masago for $6-7. read more

Testing out the new poké bowl station. Lots to choose from. If you arent familiar its like the sushi version of a burrito bowl. Its make your own, similar to that of Qdoba or Chipotle. Its a few dollars less than other places I've been but not lacking in quality or flavor. I choose my protien half spicy salmon half scallops atop sushi rice ( but you can choose white rice, brown rice or salad as base as well). For my toppings i selected avocado($1 extra but we'll worth it) cucumbers, masago( those little orange fish eggs). For sauce i had some ponzu, samie(thier own house sauce) and wasabi mayo. I went there for the first time the other day and tried the Frank's and cream cheese with crab sushi roll, they were both amazing! The staff was super friendly and answered any questions I had, the food was made pretty fast and not just throw together. Prices are amazing for what you get, I do with they had even more options to try when I came to style or the bowls they had, only offering teriyaki or hibachi is good but would have loved to try something else but that is really my only complaint and a small on at that. I ordered sushi from here with my boyfriend and we had it delivered. He got a teriyaki chicken combo and a yellowtail roll and I ordered some sushi, on cooked roll one raw. He said he didn't like the way the yellowtail tasted and offered it to me. I started feeling bad not too long after and now I have full blown food poisoning (I did not eat anything else that day). We had the food delivered and the rolls were a bit warmer than room temperature I think because it was placed above the teriyaki chicken container. The fish was not fresh either, I wouldn't recommend eating any raw food from here at ALL. Don't roll the dice on risky sushi because it's one of the easiest ways to get food poisoning. read more

The sushi is usually really good but the rice is heavy and taste a bit stale. Outside of that I enjoy eating there and majority of the people I take there enjoy it as well. I have been coming here at least once per week, sometimes even more, since they opened! Tokyo Express is a very pleasant place to eat and the staff always greets with a smile. I tried quite a number of the rolls but among my favorite is the spicy crunchy tuna. The teriyaki & hibachi grill entrees weigh a ton - they give you ALOT of delicious food -definately enough for two meals and the prices can NOT be beat. If you're in the Newark area and are craving a sushi treat - stop by! You will NOT be disappointed! read more

Tokyo express has the best and most reasonably priced sushi in delaware. I've tried multiple places searching for a perfect roll and all of them have fell short in addition to always costing $12 and up. There's a great variety of sushi here as well as other choices such as hibachi and teriyaki style meats and rice bowl combos. I'm not a fan of the teriyaki or hibachi style entrees but the sushi is amazing. I highly recommend franks roll which is shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, and topped with crab meat, spicy mayo and eel sauce. For only $6.95 you can't beat it! Also if your in a rush and you need to order ahead they will take your card info over the phone so you can have someone else pick it up. read more

Yeah, I'm ranting and raving on this one. But there is nothing "express" about Tokyo Express. It took 25 minutes for them to complete two simple rolls. At least 4 other patrons came in after us and all of them got their orders completed before us. Maybe they called ahead but at the very least acknowledge the person that's waiting in front of the cashier stand for over 10 minutes. After 15 minutes, at least offer a complimentary drink or an apology. For Pete's Sake after 20 minutes, this wasn't a take out restaurant anymore. I could have ordered a pizza in this time period. I really wanted to demand a refund but they had a sign that said, "no refunds once the sushi is made." So I held my tongue. Yeah, I feel bad for the one guy frantically making sushi rolls but he should have asked for some help from the kitchen. This isn't a place where you eat in and are served. This is a take out type spot. Yet still, a great place to get quick and tasty sushi. Their prices are extremely reasonable. The first time I ate here, it was on a Sunday. I felt kinda queasy after consuming two rolls and shrimp tempura. Just a word of general advice- never eat sushi on Sunday. Why? Well think about it, fish is not usually delivered on the weekends. Which means that your Sunday sushi is made with ingredients that have probably been sitting on ice for at least a day or two. Although I felt kind of sick after eating here for the first time, the rolls were pretty tasty. So I decided to go back during the weekday. Haven't regretted the decision since. I also notice a difference in the quality during the lunch hour. The best chefs must be working during the weekday. The rolls tasted even better the second time around.
