We rolled in with a full-on family entourage: my brother (don't let his Caucasian-ness fool you, he can handle the heat), my vegetarian little sister and her hubby, my middle sister (preparing for upcoming gallbladder surgery), my diabetic mom, and my teenage daughter, and me. Basically a menu stress test. And every single dish was a hit. Pan fried pork dumplings and crab rangoons were perfectly crispy, tofu spring rolls came with an addictive dipping sauce, pad kaprow (not a typo), crave-worthy pad Thai, and rich and flavorful chicken and red curry. The vegetarians were very happy too, which is always the true measure of success. The staff? Incredibly friendly and attentive without hovering. The vibe? An Asian-modern feel, kinda happening, makes you feel part of "the scene" and not just any restaurant. I got the same thing I always get whenever I'm eating Japanese: seaweed salad and some sushi. Everything was fine. I give it a four-out-of-five only because, well, I'm in my 60s, I've eaten a lot of sushi, and when it comes to Mikimotos ... the nigiri, not the biggest pieces I've ever had, which is a shame because it was quite good. The seaweed salad could have been drained a little better, a bit on the briney side, but eat up! Seaweed salad is a superfood. Beautiful selection of sakis. I picked something light and cold, on the sweeter side, of which I did consume a lot. I had a fine time at Mikimotos. Price point? Ummm ... not cheap, but nothing ever is these days. I can't think of any reason not to recommend Mikimotos. (But perhaps a word of caution. Wilmington can feel a little sketchy to the out-of-towner, and there is a public park two blocks away that I found a bit harrowing to walk through. The inhabitants of said park were eager to engage, so steer clear and keep your wits about you.)

The chefs are true professionals, and if you're a sushi enthusiast, this place should be on your list. Our server, Courtney, was incredible: attentive, kind, and on top of everything. I would genuinely come back for the food and for her service alone. HOWEVER. At the height of our dinner, an employee (I'm still not sure who she was) stood in the main dining area on FaceTime, and not subtle, discreet, muted FaceTime. NO. A child was scream-crying on the call while this employee packed orders right in front of everyone. Look, I'm not coldhearted. I get that life and work sometimes blend together. Emergencies happen, kids exist, and we all have tough days. But I work hard for my money. I have kids. When I go out to dinner with my husband (especially to a place with excellent food and prices to match). I'm there to relax, escape, and enjoy the experience. Listening to someone else's household chaos, at full volume, in the middle of the dining room is the opposite of professional. We politely asked another waiter if they could please request that the volume be lowered. They complied, but by the time the employee finally turned the volume down, our check was already paid and we were walking out. Amazing food. Amazing server. But if I wanted to hear a toddler meltdown during dinner... I would've stayed home.
