Came here on a Sunday for all you can eat dinner. The entrance/facade of the store is not that appealing, with old curtains covering the store front. It was full with customers though, so when we came in, there was nobody to greet you or usher you in. It wasn't a long wait, we were seated to our table and given this two sheets of paper where you can put in how many orders for sushi and kitchen menu you'd like. First, the teriyaki dishes- were grilled or cooked portions of the meat or seafood and topped with teriyaki sauce, (commercially prepared sauce)don't expect great presentations of food. The sweet potato and broccoli tempura were good, crispy batter coating were just right. The shrimp tempura were coated with this thick crspy coating-not that good. Now, all the sushi ordered would come in this humongous plate, it's not bad, the ingredients used were fresh, it tasted how typical sushi would taste, nothing extraordinary. I had asked the waitress who came with our drinks to see if they had any ice cream or cake that they can put a candle on and bring out after dinner for my friend's birthday. She said she would be able to do that but later on I'm not sure where she went and we never ended up getting the ice cream. There were way too many different waiters/waitresses serving us and they didn't ask us for dessert or we wanted to see the menu again and ended up handing us the check. So we sat there in confusion for a few minutes and since no one came by the table, we ended up paying the bill and leaving. As for the food, the sushi was really good. I ordered a vegetarian maki combo which consisted of three rolls and a choice of miso soup or house salad. It's perfect to share. If you're craving a ton of sushi for a good deal, then this place is the place to go. When you walk in, you are given two pieces of paper with all the available sushi, sashimi, appetizer, udon, and dessert that you can order. You write down how many of each you want, and they take your paper and bring out your order. The food takes a long time to come out, sometimes even half an hour or more if it's really busy (evenings). There is a surcharge if you don't finish your food, so don't order too many! I've seen them count how many sushi pieces we didn't finish, but we were never charged so I'm not sure how strict they are. The sushi is decent - what you would expect from a sushi buffet. Once upon a time, I discovered this godsend with friends and couldn't get enough. Then after years and years of eating the same appetizers, sashimi, and green tea ice cream from an immutable menu, I--not unexpectedly--got sick of it (literally with an upset stomach one time) and swore off coming back until the menu changed. If you are an all-you-can-eat sushi virgin living or working in Middlesex County, you should give Sushi Palace a try for just the sheer volume of (Americanized) sushi & sashimi you can eat at a flat price. Hot and cold side dishes and ice cream round out the menu, but the main attraction is obviously the sushi that this business claims to be the palace of. And like a virgin, your very first time here will be the most memorable, but expect diminishing returns on subsequent visits. Lamentably, the menu has not changed in over a decade (since opening) and both service and food quality have been hit-or-miss. During dinner hours, the staff is often overwhelmed and the sushi preparers struggle to keep up with the influx of massive AYCE orders--resulting in long wait times and raw fish that is perhaps not so fresh or well-constructed or safe to eat by the time it gets to your table. Parties with members ordering off the a la carte menu while everyone else in the same party opting for AYCE is understandably frowned upon, but I remember a friend who was able to order a bowl of udon while the rest of us were finishing stuffing our faces only because she arrived very late and asked the server nicely. The only items on the a la carte menu not having any overlap with the AYCE menu appear to be the udon, teriyaki and katsu dishes, but these are basically run-of-the-mill Americanized versions that exist for people too scared or too allergic to eat raw fish. And in case words like "Philadelphia roll" have not already tipped you off, absolutely nothing on the menu here is remotely close to authentic. I actually don't mind the taste of avocado and cream cheese wrapped in rice, seaweed, and spicy mayo--but I would never call it sushi. Other observations: -Sushi Palace is tucked away in a corner behind the Stop & Shop and shares the same parking lot. Expect a lot of speed bumps and pedestrians with shopping carts. -Some of the tables are wobbly. My husband and I have gone to the Sushi Palace in Kingston so we decided to check this place out. The restaurant is located in the Inman Grove Center on Inman Ave... on the right side of the Stop and Shop. The restaurant has a good amount of seating; it's clean, has some dark corners, but not creepy. You can order off of the menu, but you go to sushi palace for the all you can eat! Our first round of ordering was smooth, though they forgot to bring one item. For our 2nd round, we ordered a few more things including dessert. They brought out the tempura after the ice cream was eaten. Oops! The rolls were not as large as the rolls at Sushi Palace in Kingston. The mango was very ripe and fresh. I enjoyed their peanut roll though Midori's is much better. Good seaweed salad; I couldn't try the spicy version since it has crab meat. Honestly, it's Edison, so it's just okay but I'm rating on a curve here. The service is really slow, even when the restaurant is empty, so I tend to put in a huge order from the get-go and then cross my fingers that it'll come before anyone at the table withers from hunger. Some of the kitchen items are tasty, such as the shrimp tempura, shu mai, and kani seaweed salad, which is surprising because that's not really what everyone is here for. Those orders tend to come out faster, so it's probably smart to get a little bit while waiting for the sushi to come out. The sushi is not the freshest, the sashimi are really roughly chopped, and the salmon usually comes out in thumb sized chunks but again...this is Edison, so it's okay. I'll stuff myself on the huge plate that eventually arrives and is usually missing at least two items that I've ordered. In the meantime, another round of sushi is ordered, much smaller but will take just as long for plate to come out. Luckily, by this point no one is dying of hunger anymore. I often find that in the third and fourth order, all the sashimi will shrink in size - possibly subliminal messaging from the staff that you've had enough and should probably leave soon. That's usually the cue to order ice cream. There are actually two locations in Central Jersey for Sushi Palace: Edison and Sommerville. I have personally been to both and they're pretty much the same in terms of food and service. The Edison location offers a lot more tables and space than its Sommerville counterpart. The food at Sushi Palace is phenomenal with a wide selection of both sushi rolls and sashimi. There is also a lot of food such as shumai, soups, and seaweed salad that are available if you want a break from sushi. The food is unlimited, which makes this place very appealing. Whenever I go, my friends and I will order a bunch of sushi rolls and they are all usually great, including both taste and presentation. Despite the quality of the food, the service here is usually subpar. The two most recent times I've gone to Sushi Palace they have forgotten our dessert orders and we have had to ask the wait staff multiple times about that. Not only that, but we also usually have to ask for the check so that we can pay and leave. Service is overall slow here, which makes it slightly less enjoyable. The Edison roll is one of their signature rolls and it's really good, you gotta try it at least once. Once seated, you get a menu for the Kitchen and Sushi respectively, where you can order soups, salad, sashimi, hand rolls, special rolls, teriyaki, ice cream, and much more. I recommend ordering smaller portions at a time if it's your first time here so you're not overwhelmed by the amount of food you have, and so you can decide whether or not a 2nd order is even needed (you may be charged for leftover food). Their kitchen options are pretty solid ranging from salads, soups, tempura, and other kitchen appetizers you would find at a typical Japanese restaurant. For their sushi options, you can get sashimi, maki rolls, and special rolls. The ingredients are not the best but for the price point it's decent. We came on a weekday which was $28 per person. For that price, Sushi Palace is definitely a steal. It is also a BYOB; a definitely plus. There is a liquor store in the same plaza just walking distance from the restaurant. I love All You Can Eat deals and this Sushi Palace was a staple during my college experience. Sadly, the service here is just so bad and can't be overlooked. They have yet to figure out a good system when it gets super crowded. Often, servers forget an item or bring the wrong order. When they get really backed up, food can take 30+ minutes without the servers coming back to check on you and refill your water/tea. It's also very difficult to flag them down and once you do, they seem confused or have an attitude when you ask how much longer the food will take. One time that I went, just the Spicy Seaweed Salad took over half an hour to arrive. It's also important to note that some servers are straight up rude. There was one incident where my friend tipped less because the service was bad and the waitress followed my friend to her car and demanded more money for tip. I can't think of a restaurant where I have received such consistently bad service. The quality of the fish is okay, but does not taste as fresh as that from other locations of Sushi Palace. The special rolls are not very unique but are still delicious and fulfilling. My favorite roll is the Kamikaze roll, which is shrimp tempura with tuna and eel on top. To get the most bang for your buck, I highly suggest getting tons of sashimi. Though I've overeaten to the point of feeling nauseous, I have never gotten sick from the actual fish, which I'm grateful for. I have no complaints about the hot food items such as shrimp tempura, chicken katsu, miso soup, etc. I have been satisfied with every item I've ordered in that category. If you do order any of these with AYCE be prepared for it to be forgotten or arrival after a lot of time if the kitchen gets backed up. I also am a fan of the ice cream, especially Green Tea and Red Bean. Take advantage in AYCE and order tons of ice cream! I've been to all four Sushi Palace locations (Summit, Somerville, Edison, Princeton) multiple times. It breaks my heart a bit to give Sushi Palace in Edison a two star review because, for a long time, it was my favorite location for a while. Edison is somewhat the closest location to where I live and also has plenty of seating (versus the Somerville location which can get very crowded in the evening). Also, Edison is located in a place where there is plenty of parking, there is an actual lot which is also different from the Somerville location. Sushi Palace is an "AYCE" restaurant that is served to your table. This concept was still relatively new to this area, especially when it first opened. Now, however, it seems that many other restaurants are taking on the same concept...and maybe doing it just as well if not better? That's another conversation. Sushi Palace has always been a sure fire place for me in terms of getting the "most bang for your buck" experience. They serve hot food/appetizers, sushi/sashimi, and "dessert" which is either ice cream or orange slices. I've always been typically satisfied with my experience here. Two years ago I had a birthday gathering here (not my first time) but the restaurant staff were a HOT MESS. Orders were wrong, didn't come out, or servers just didn't have time to bring basic things like forks or extra water. I swore I would never come with a big group again because they didn't seem to be able to handle it. The following year I had my birthday gathering at Sushi Palace in Summit and it was a MUCH better experience. Unfortunately, this past week my friend held his birthday dinner here and the SAME things happened. One of the male waiters was COMPLETELY RUDE to some of our guests, SNATCHED papers out of her hand when she handing him her food order. He also snapped and walked away every time there was confusion with the food being brought to the table (Which wasn't even our food but another table's food). Instead of apologizing he would just walk away and seemed frustrated. The other waitresses certainly tried their best but you could tell the staff were overworked and frustrated. We called ahead for a reservation of 19 the day before, so we expected a little bit more preparation for the large group. When we arrived they only had set up partial amount of tables and had to scramble when the rest of the group arrived. It was very stressful for us and it looked unprofessional on their end. The only reason I am giving two stars and not one is that, this experience is not ALWAYS the experience. It's just very inconsistent from time to time you never know what you are going to get. Glad we did because this was a cool concept, not too outrageously priced, and close by. $25 per person all you can eat and BYOS (Saki) or whatever else you'd like to drink. Sushi Palace seems to be a pretty popular spot for AYCE. My boyfriend and I came in on a Saturday at around 2:30 and the place was filled. Luckily, we only had to wait about 10 minutes. Upon his recommendation, we skipped the cooked foods. He's been here before and said they weren't good. Which is okay - I wasn't there for any of that teriyaki nonsense anyway - I was purely interested in the sashimi, which tasted fresh. My favorite was the white tuna but you should know - the size of a piece of their white tuna sashimi is about half the size of a regular piece so if you're going to order this, you might want to order double. The rolls are just alright - I would probably skip these because they'll only fill you up quickly anyway. Tip - they don't have tuna sashimi. I mistook 'albacore' for tuna but really, it was just a mysterious piece of fish seasoned with A LOT of pepper. So we ordered off the menu and basically half out order was wrong and about a third of it just did not come out. We asked if out food was still coming but they had no idea of what was going on. At the end the part of the meal I was waiting came like 20 mins later and it was botched. The worst part is I was sitting right in front of the chef and when the waitress addressed that our food was missing he ignored the order and make other peoples food first even though we were waiting. To top things off they started taking about us in Mandarin and said that we were rude and impatient. Little did they know I understood them. At this point I was done with this place and we just stopped eating. The waitress told us we would be charged for the food we didnt finish and I told her that we had some issues with our order and then I just said w/e ill pay for the charge. She didnt charge me but it felt like she didnt charge me because everyone was staring at her in agreement with me. We were not difficult, we asked nicely for our food, and we have been loyal to this place. I dont know what happened to this place but dont go here. I don't understand why they would use the papers to ask for our orders if they dont even look at them.
