Chicken Teriyaki
Abigail C.

Sumiyaki Japan is a decent spot for sushi in the Metuchen area. First, I got the lunch special which comes with chicken teriyaki, rice, and one regular roll -- I got the lobster salad roll. The chicken teriyaki and rice were pretty standard and came out nice and steaming. I had the lobster salad roll, but also tried the spicy tuna and volcano roll. All of these rolls were pretty solid and enjoyable, though not the best sushi I have ever had. I also tried the fried rice, which was about the same quality as Six Flags fried rice, so not great. However, the price was pretty reasonable. I did find the service here to be unpleasant due to one employee. She had a very unhappy look on her face and did not seem happy to answer any of our questions. First thing I asked was if they had a lunch special (since it was on their website, but I didn't see anything in store). She said "no" and then shortly after asked what I was looking for and rang me up for the lunch special. I also paid extra for fried rice, and received white rice. When I brought this to her attention, she did not respond and just walked away. She did end up bringing us two plates of fried rice, which made up for it. The interaction was still very cold and not what I expected. I will say, another employee here was very nice. She brought out our food with a smile on her face and was happy to answer any questions. The other employees were also pleasant. In terms of ambiance, this place is nothing special. The seating area is nice, but this restaurant is definitely not the nicest sushi place I have been to. Once again though, I do feel like I enjoyed a pretty cheap meal, so I am not complaining. I had a good experience overall at Sumiyaki Japan, though the service could be better.

This is a nice lil spot to get good eats at a great price. Very clean inside, staff is friendly and fast. The food is fresh and flavorful. I'd def suggest this place others and plan to become a regular!

Today we tried Sumiyaki for lunch. The Beef Teriyaki was amazing and a giant portion for the price. I love the meals being served in to go boxes to make it easy if you want food for later. Their in house ice cream was also amazing. Definitely recommend this place.

Chicken Teriyaki with brown rice and mixed veggies.

Came in to grab dinner and this place is my go to for chicken teriyaki. Dining room was empty with the exception of one patron waiting for their to-go order. Cooks and crew were busy working on pick-up/Uber/Doordash orders. Never really had an issue here except for the restaurant occasionally running out of brown rice. Other than that, the staff is courteous and the chicken teriyaki is tasty. Can't really attest to anything else on the menu, although I am curious about trying their take on the chicken burrito. I really don't mind this place and traveling a town over to grab teriyaki. I don't think you'll be disappointed especially considering the place is well-kept/clean, food is delicious, and reasonably priced.

Super affordable and yummy Japanese food & boba! We got: Brown sugar bubble tea-really yummy and sweet Strawberry Sparkle Drink-tasted like a carbonated strawberry açaí refresher from Starbucks, so good! Spicy crab roll-really tasty Chicken teryaki roll-unique but good!! Crab rangoons-wish there was a little more crab, but still yummy Chicken teryaki-solid but ask for extra sauce

I finally got around to trying out this new restaurant in Metuchen, NJ. The staff here is friendly but they looked a bit confused when a customer comes in. I think that they are wondering if the customers are picking up or dining in. They have a lot of customers coming in to get take out but not much customers inside eating. Decor: They have some seating outside for the customers if they want to enjoy the outdoor weather. They also have plenty of seating inside of the restaurant. Their bathroom seems very clean and even has a little table with a plant on it. Chicken Teriyaki: The chicken teriyaki has enough flavor and is actually pretty tasty. The white rice is not too soft or too hard and is cooked perfectly. The vegetables that came with it needs a little more flavor because it tastes really bland and does not go with this dish. Overall: This restaurant is pretty decent but the food did not make a really good impression on me when I first tried the food here.

Salmon Poke Bowl

Not much to say besides this place is my favorite for poke bowls!! It's so hard to find a decent poke bowl but this place has been the most consistent for me. You get a very filling bowl with rice, fish of your choice (tuna, salmon, or both), sliced cucumber, edamame, avocado, corn, and seaweed salad. Super filling and relatively healthy! I love it here.

Having late lunch here today. We ordered Bento Boxes. One with chicken and the other one is beef. Place just opened about three months ago just across Wholefoods, in the same area of downtown Metuchen, NJ. The sliced chicken bento is moist and soft. Well cooked with sautéed veggies and salad. The fried dumplings comes with California roll, too. It's delicious. Same also with their beef bento. The beef were sliced, soft and well marinated! Taste good. Clean and well lighted restaurant. Serving is average for one person. The price is right, too. Self service style restaurant. Serving Staff are courteous and helpful. Separate clean Men and Women's bathroom. They have free WiFi.

Chicken Teriyaki Bento: Packaged very neatly

Have always wanted to eat japanese food but never really had the opportunity in my hometown of Perth Amboy. After a random impulse, I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento along with a Ramune with zero expectations. My oh my, when my order arrived i was drooling!! The delicious smell was seeping out of the package and I couldn't wait to dig in! The shrimp tempura was crispy and it was in the container for the whole 25 minute drive!! I've never been a big fan of sushi either but I ate all the california rolls that came in the bento box. The chicken itself was nice and tender, everything you'd expect! Love how the chicken was placed on top of the rice too, allowing the juices to add more flavor onto the rice. As for the salad, i'm not sure what kind of dressing was added but it was unexpectedly spicy. That didn't stop me from taking it all down though, haha. The food was incredible. I honestly cannot wait to order some more from here!

Sharing the same lot as the Whole Foods Market plaza in Metuchen, this teriyaki place is a welcome culinary addition. We only tried the basics -- chicken teriyaki, seafood udon noodle, the bento box and a few stacks of sushi. Everything comes out great and as expected from a teriyaki fastfood spot. The udon is delicious, packed with lots of seaweed and shrimp, and the bento is tasty without being too salty. The price is reasonable and comparable to the experience and portion. (And they let our dog sits in with us inside when it was a bit hot outside!) Will check out their poke bowl in the next visit.

Upon entering, you've entered a high speed Japanese train with lights and signage surrounding you. The little train cars that bring your food are super fun, and the conveyor belt is actually filled with food. The little robots that bring you appetizers are a fun touch too! There's a great mix of both sushi and cooked food here, and each dish has such amazing flavor (which is surprising for an AYCE establishment.) I was fully expecting something to taste off or not hit the mark, but that never came. While the sushi rolls are fun, the cooked food is definitely the star. The fried rice was flavorful, meats had great sear to them and the sauces were tasty. I've never been to an all you can eat that had agedashi tofu, so it was a surprise to me seeing this on the menu! Whether you're into raw sushi or cooked meals, there's food for everyone. I fully understand why wait times are so long - we waited for 1.5 hours for an early weekend dinner. Definitely need to visit this place at least once, maybe twice, or just all the time, because the bang for your buck here is unreal!

The decor is unique and it honestly felt like I was teleported to Japan itself. Our sushi chef was Yoshi and he was professional, informative, and kind. Can I just say the variety in both cooked and raw dishes in this omakase experience is the largest I've ever come across. Out of the cooked appetizers I loved the turban snail and the foie gras. Out of the raw appetizers my favorite was the array of sashimi in a light lemon sauce. The scallop and octopus were fresh and buttery. I did not expect the amount of food we received, not to mention at the end of the meal there is also soba noodles! I absolutely loved that one of the dishes was tempura soft shell crab. My husband enjoyed everything but was very full and could not finish his sushi. Yoshi allowed us to pack it to go which was very thoughtful. I'm pretty sure we will be coming back here to celebrate any birthdays and anniversarys with the omakase experience.

I've eaten at Ottoyee for months now, and each experience has been incredibly delicious. However, the only thing is that the wait time can run very long. Not for the food to arrive, but for placing the order. We tried to get the attention of the waiter on staff multiple times, but was either ignored or they were behind the screen attending to something else. The wait time was around 15-20 minutes, but this is likely attributed to the small staff. Otherwise though, they were incredibly kind and knowledgeable of the menu and we still had a delicious experience as usual.

Upon entertaining on a weekend evening, there were a few tables with patrons but not too busy. The restaurant did seem a bit understaffed with only one person taking orders / bringing food out, making it difficult to flag down this one person to successfully take our order and ask for anything additional throughout the night. Gyudon: for the price, we were really surprised at how small of a portion this was. It was not only in a small bowl, but the meat was layered on top perfectly deceiving you to think that there was more than there actually was. The majority of this dish was rice, and with limited sauce at that. As displayed on the menu images it was to be served with a runny egg, but unfortunately we got a fully cooked one (disappointing, as we were looking for something to mix with the rice!) Sushi: We got a 3 rolls and they were just alright. They were pretty small in size, with less rice than I'm used to (which is something I do like - I would rather more fish than rice!) With us getting spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and spicy scallop - they all kind of tasted the same, so I wish the fish wasn't as heavily masked with spicy mayo. Ramen: I got the black garlic ramen, and it wasn't the best, but wasn't the worst. I've purchased fresh ramen packages in the supermarket before and it tasted just like that, so it made me disappointed knowing I could achieve the same at home. The soup itself was extremely rich and fatty, and the charsiu had no flavor whatsoever leaving much to be desired. The main reason I'm rating this so low is upon having my last bites of sushi, I could tell something was off. I don't recall which specifically I had but I made a statement that it was extremely fishy and off putting. Fast forward later that night, I was hunched over the toilet vomiting with stomach pain - and I can deduct that the sushi was the culprit. I might consider trying Ottoyee again due to the great deals they have listed on food delivery apps, but the sushi quality (quite literally) put a bad taste in my mouth.
