He escalated my concern to the manager and the quick response was a shoulder shrug and that this is the expectation now. We came here for AYCE sushi. The price is pretty good and they have plenty of options. The food was great and quality seemed good. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience here as the servers were nice as well. If you are looking for high quality Japanese, go somewhere else. I did like the warm eel roll, and the spicy tuna and jalapeño roll, both were very tasty. This was my second time here and I was not impressed. The time before this, I don't really remember because nothing was just that memorable. So, I had to give it another shot to make sure lol. They say first impressions are everything. When we came in, we were not greeted. My favorite was the special one with the soft shelled crab, everything else was just bland. The sashimi were cut into small pieces and was just not satisfying. I'm going to be honest and start by saying this place isn't for the faint of heart, especially during COVID. The place is small and they've crammed as many tables as possible into this space. If you're coming on a weekend during prime time lunch/dinner you're going to be waiting, and you're going to be frustrated. With that out of the way this is the best AYCE I've been to in the area, that's taking into account Sushi Palace, Kumo, Sakura, etc. You name it, I've probably had it. All of these places use the same format, you get your sheet of paper for Kitchen or Sushi and you mark your order, hand it in and wait. You know the drill, you hand it your papers and then what, by some mystery maybe some sushi you ordered goes missing, maybe the miso soup you ordered is taking way longer than you thought and the table next to you that got seated after you did already got theirs. Listen, it happens, and that's just life in AYCE sushi world where there is way more demand than there are workers. Now, the one thing I will say is that the sushi, you know, the main thing you came here for will be quality, and by god even if they forget a sashimi or two, at least they don't forget your entire order like some places I've been to... (Looking at you Kumo). When you put that paper in, it arrives. They quality is the best I've had and having been there 4 times in 2 months now, it's the most consistent. I'm not saying you won't be disappointed in the beginning if you decide to go during peak hours, it's packed and this place is no secret. I'm saying that's par for the course at any AYCE sushi and this one handles it the best. I do love me some sushi. I've been to another AYCE sushi place and loved it; although admittedly I was like a crackhead and couldn't stop. Now I know when to say no. Makato is in a small strip of stores on the road and doesn't look like much. Yet inside it was airy and clean and the staff was friendly and attentive. I started with some apps and typical of me, I didn't read that there were two pieces to an order, so I ended up with four chicken satay and four shrimp tempura along with two spring rolls! The staff kept coming by to ask what else I wanted, and like an experienced ACYE eater, I tried to pace myself. I had a couple of Shu Mai and a bit of BBQ Squid after that followed my two delicious rolls. One was called an Edison roll, the other equally as good had spicy tuna and seaweed salad in it - how could you go wrong? The nice waitress was surprised I was done asking me if I wanted another roll or some ice cream - they had four interesting types - but that was it. This was my first time trying out Makato. I heard about it plenty of times from my boyfriend and his friends. We went for lunch and I loved that it was all you can eat. Most of us picked the all you can eat option while two people out of the group picked separate entrees. I liked how the whole table was not forced to pick the unlimited option which was great. One thing I noticed with most of these Japanese Sushi Buffet restaurants here in N.J., their serving staff are Chinese, even the Sushi Chefs and short order cooks. I don't know why? Honestly me and my girlfriend love this place. Allow me to explain, When I first started to eat here, my parents would always get takeout from here but it was usually just their regular Japanese food, which is very good. When I figured out they also had sushi, I've been binge eating from here ever since. Me and my girlfriend snag that all you can eat so fast and started to dial up our faves. From the pictures I provided, I started off with the wonton soup and the house salad. You can't go wrong with these im telling you, the dressing on that salad is some kind of ginger dressing that I could literally drink out of a bottle if I had the chance. The wonton soup is literally impossible to mess up unless you are really in a bad restaurant but over here at Makoto they make sure to fill those mini dumplings with a nice filling pork. YUM. Next our waitress, which was very nice by the way, brings our gyoza!! This is the closest thing to crack that I will do in my life. These babies are crisped to perfection and that little tangy sauce that comes with that THANG is also do die for!! At last, our sushi. THE worst experience ever! If I could give it negative stars, I would! We visited this establishment tonight with my daughter and sister. Upon arriving we noticed that the place was packed but no one else was waiting for a table. We were quickly seated at a table which seats 6. A lady came right after us and she was seated at a table for 4 people (she was by herself, waiting for the rest of her party to arrive). As we were getting settled, a group of 8 people came in through the door. We didn't think anything of it but noticed that at this point the restaurant was packed & there were no more available seats left. This is when everything went down hill. The host went up to us & asked if we had a reservation. He obviously knew we didn't, he seated us. He said that the group that just came in has a reservation and that the table we were seated us will be given to them. We asked then if we will be moved to the other table where that one lady was sitting, the one who came after us and was still waiting for her party to arrive. They said no. Mind you, she was by herself and still waiting for her party to arrive but we now have to give up our seats and wait for when a table becomes available. My daughter was so hungry that she literally started crying. They would rather let a child wait and go hungry than to make it right and tell the other lady to wait until her party arrives. We were shocked and appalled by the treatment of their staff!! We left and ate somewhere else! We will never visit this establishment again and will be happy to support other small businesses in town! read more
