2+ years ago, I would have given this place 4 stars. The last few time I have been here, the service was mediocre from both the servers and sushi chefs. Servers constantly forgetting to bring what you've asked for. The Sushi chefs cut huge pieces of fish for sashimi, make up their own rolls in place of what you've picked and sometimes don't give you the quantity of what youve ordered I don't want to make it into a race thing so instead I'm assuming it's because they don't care. The quality of the sushi has just gone way down. I'd rather go somewhere else and pay for each roll now. Def not worth the $22+ anymore. Solid AYCE sushi place in the area. They have an extensive AYCE eat menu and the service is rather fast too. The increased their prices since covid so now it's about $35 per person after tax and tip so make sure you come hungry. Some of our favorite rolls are the Edison roll and the crunchy eel roll. I'm not fond of their sweet potato roll compared to other places in the area but they still have many other good ones. Get their early on a Friday or Saturday night to avoid waits but they still have about 20 tables. read more

On the other hand, this place in my opinion is great when you want good food and budget friendly. One of my fav little dishes is the spicy seaweed salad. BTW it is BYOB! Now I got get to the womp womp womp parts of this place. If you're doing the all you eat you get a slip that you fill out of what kind of sushi or kitchen plates you want, but a lot of times if you put multiple of some items, you'll get just one order or they don't give it to you at all. It sucks if you've been waiting for the 5 pieces of tuna sashimi you ordered but 1 is on the plate. Waitresses and waiters can be hit or miss. Overall, I like this place a lot. I've been a long time fan of the Sushi Palace Edison site, but the more times I go, the more my appreciation for the restaurant diminishes. Let's quickly talk about pre-covid: while they might cut your sashimi into smaller pieces if you order like 30+ at once, you could still feel well assured that the food would come out hot or cold (whichever it is supposed to be) and feel quite fresh. Even on the occasions where the rice was a little dry and stale, each bite filled you with joy. And the wait times, while definitely long if you are unfortunate enough as to come during peak hours on a weekend, are acceptable: it's easy to understand and sympathize for the sushi chefs you can imagine frantically running around in the back, chopping and hacking at huge slabs of fish and drowning in a sea of orders. That would be why my previous reviews always hovered at 4 and 5 stars. Now, let's talk covid-era, post-reopening of New Jersey. A minor thing that I did notice is that they bring out water with straws already added into the cups, with all but the very tip of the straw wrappers already removed in order to keep the tip clean without putting the rest of the wrapper into the water and letting it become soggy. As overworked and short on time as the staff appears to be, wouldn't it make more sense to just bring straws fully wrapped to the table and placing them down with the glasses of water? It might not save that much in time but it's less work for the employees, and surely customers aren't going to complain about having to unwrap their own straws with all of the safety and contamination concerns during the pandemic. Anyways, to the real grievances. There is something quite frustrating about the disorganization with their menus. You always have to wait with hawk-vision for a waiter or waitress to come within range and then quickly try to grab their attention before they rush away with some other table's order, just to get a new menu to fill out. It's always been a problem, but not a significant one. It just unfortunately exacerbates the real issue: Sushi Palace is too SLOW to run as a restaurant. In a three and a half hour session, we were able to order only twice, when that once was enough time to order three or even four times for the table. More-so, over half the time we were in the restaurant was spent without a single dish in front of us: even water refills seemed beyond the capabilities of SP that night. The restaurant was filled to the brim it seemed, maxing out pre-covid capacities, even though it was just an average non-Friday weekday. On top of that, the disorganization of our orders showed in the way our food was brought to our table: all of the appetizers may have found their way to our table, but the plates of sushi appeared so long after our orders that we almost couldn't recognize if it was our order or not, and felt lukewarm, as if either the fish was sitting out in the open for hours, or the chefs made the plate of sushi and it was just sitting there slowly heating up on the countertop. The wait would even have been tolerable if not for the disappointing size and quality of the sushi. I understand the size of the pieces may have been reduced as a result of increased prices and decreased supply, and as an AYCE restaurant I don't have any problems with this tactic: if you give smaller portions and longer wait times to allow for digestion, it would probably save you money and resources while still making customers happy. No complaints about that. The real problem was that the rice tasted as if it had been cooked the day before and left to sit overnight instead of being made fresh, having all those qualities of dryness, chewiness and lukewarm temperature that implied to me a lack of care in food prep. At least the rest of the sushi pieces seemed up to their regular standards, but the rice, which arguably is 50% of the sushi experience, turned what should have been a good experience into a disappointment spent mostly wondering about the level of food safety we can expect from SP in the future. To summarize: Sushi Palace is either disorganized or understaffed and struggled to provide food in a timely manner, and did not have the time to even ensure that the rice used in their sushi didn't taste like it was from the leftover rice that was going to be thrown away from a Panda Express. read more

It was my first time going to this sushi palace location. I wasn't too impressed by them. The place is a good size and it was not too busy when we went on a Monday night, however, service seemed slow still. They serve all-you-can-eat sushi (about $22 pp on week nights) as well as a regular menu. I liked their variety in hot foods on the ayce menu (udon noodles, fried tempura veggies, and soups). I never feel good after eating AYCE sushi but that's more user error than a knock on the restaurant. For something like $22 (weekdays), you too can eat like a king and stuff yourself to an unreasonable degree. Seriously, watch it because it's easy to over eat here. The food is fine. It's nothing amazing, and a lot of it isn't even great, but almost all of it is good and at the very least serviceable. Come on, it's a sushi buffet for $22 -- you can only expect so much. Service is almost always subpar and lackluster at best, so don't expect much there, but you're not there for the service anyway. Maybe a 2.5 and a half stars. My cousins took me here today and I wasn't impressed. Service was friendly and it was affordable but I found their menu to be lacking in options and also flavor. The rolls were small and their options for AYCE left me unimpressed. They do offer more appetizers than most places but they only had like 10 roll options which is really small compared to other places. If your looking for a good sushi place this is good.. But service here is the worse especially on weekends waitresses would have more table than they can accommodate just to get all the customers in.. Your still talking and they would talk to you while they walk away from the table.. Waiting for ages to get your water or tea then the food is already on the table.. When you get orders, its either they give you the wrong one or they give you nothing at all, its like your orders would disappear.. They wouldn't careless about any reviews because management knows people would still come in and eat in their place.. My sister complained one time regarding the count of sashimi that we put in and gave us lesser than that.. Its not the first time that happened.. I have been going to Sushi Palace basically since it opened. I usually have a good experience. However, this past week, I had the unfortunate displeasure of finding a worm (or some kind of bug) in my food. Upon showing the waitress, she laughed and walked away. Upon calling the front desk person (presumably the one in charge at the time), she apologized and offered us 20% off our check. Seeing as 20% is a pretty low discount considering the circumstances, my boyfriend asked to speak to the manager. The front desk person called the manager who then proceeded to yell at my boyfriend over the phone for at least ten minutes. The manager even defiantly said something along the lines of "You're not happy? Call the Better Business Bureau!" Although that was not our intention at the start, it certainly tempted us after we had finished the conversation! After the call, the front desk person apologized again and she offered our party of 4 one comped meal and three at 20% off. Not a problem at all. In fact, I think she was the most understanding and gracious person working at the time! The real problem here is that, upon questioning the front desk person, she said that they were not responsible for what was in the edamame (worm/bug/whatever) because they purchase it from another store. There was absolutely no consideration that perhaps the bug had made its way into the edamame at Sushi Palace and not at this other store. Since this establishment serves RAW FISH, who knows what else has been contaminated? Just some food for thought. A good number of people I know have claimed the same has happened to them in the past year or so. What happened to this place? Just because they got their name out there and started having more customers they think they can treat customers like garbage. I was here with my sister and brother in-law for dinner and brought my nieces. One is 6 months old and the other 17 months old. They tried charging us for 4 adults. My sister was like who is the fourth adult? My daughter is 17 months old, I mean she may eat alot but shes just a little kid. They said "ok fine". 10 minutes later they come back to confirm that its for 3 adults and not 4. My sister was like "yes"!! Then, they they proceed to tell us that kids that are over 10 years of age has to be charged for an adult fee. We said "ok good, because she's only 17 months so charge her for a child fee." They said "ok" for the last time thank goodness. Unfrigginbelievable this place! Is it really that hard to distinguish between a 10 year old and a 17 month old? This place is nuts for trying to charge my 17 month old niece as an adult. I went to school in Davis, land of the sushi buffets, so I've definitely been missing stuffing my face with sushi. (Let's just not talk about the time where Jusco decided to randomly close on my 21st birthday. :[ They must have known I was headed their way. ._.) The restaurant is a bit small (located to the right of Stop & Shop!), so if you have a big group, it might be a good idea to call ahead. The quality is pretty darn amazing and the sashimi is awesome. (Salmon, how I've missed you!) We came here on Monday evening before 6 p.m., so it wasn't crowded. I wouldn't call the service particularly friendly (no smiles, especially not when we started Rounds 3-6), but they were very polite and prompt. The music selection is pretty awesome. It's like a walk through my childhood (+ before that too). At $19.95 per person on a weeknight, this is slightly more expensive than what I used to get, but this was our group's pre-Thanksgiving get-together, so it's cool. Also, it's all-you-can-eat sushi + all kinds of other goodness. I definitely thought it was worth it. Don't waste food or they may charge you extra. (This definitely was not a problem for our group. heh heh heh...) Lemme tell you why! On Round 3, one of our friends/I started having a pseudo-eating competition. I say pseudo because we didn't count how much we'd each eaten before, but our conversations started turning into something like this: F: I want at least another 10 pieces of salmon sashimi. Because my in-laws are gluttons for punishment, they wanted to give Sushi Palace another try. Same as last time, they refused to seat a party of five in a table that is adequately sized, instead insisting that we needed to squeeze into a table for four. This is when 75% of the restaurant was empty during prime dining hours. They essentially refused to seat my in-laws and the host literally left them to stand in the middle of the restaurant with no communication while he attends to "other reservations". By the way, no one else came into the restaurant while this took place. There was no explanation why we couldn't be seated with adequately space when more than half of the restaurant was empty. The whole seating issue wasn't a big deal to me, personally, but I was appalled by how they handled customer concerns - by basically ignoring them. They could have done a number of things - take an extra minute to explain, apologized, whatever... but nothing. Given this and other Yelper's experiences here, I am convinced this place has some of the coldest, most passive-aggressive people working in Middlesex County. Now that I've tried more of their selections and been to the establishment plenty more times, I have to say no other sushi buffet can compare! Since it's an order sushi buffet, your sushi is fresh and made with the utmost care. Do not get discouraged that you have to order your sushi even though it's a buffet. They make up for the waiting with their wide variety of flavors. I count 53 variations of sushi on their menu. (Some only differ from an ingredient or two, but you're still left with like 30 totally different choices) Even their hot food is prepared for your individual order! The hot food I've tasted didn't seem to have been left out to be reheated or lukewarm! Service seems to be pretty consistent for me. The waitresses aren't rude or condescending whenever I go. Although 100% attention is harder to get when the restaurant is loaded with customers, they eventually attend to my table in a reasonable time. Sushi Palace seems to have changed the waitress staff as I've seen some new regulars emerge different from the ones I saw during the summer. The number of food you've ordered and what they serve you seems to still be an issue. Usually they will still give you too much of what you've ordered, especially if you've ordered in large portions. A solution to this dilemma I found, is to abuse their "ordering slips" and order small amounts at a time so you'll get just about the same amount you ordered. Also, this tactic allows one to realize how full they are. I usually see customers ordering a whole bunch of sushi and hot food at the beginning, only to realize they can't finish half of what is left in their plate! This place is moving up as one of my favorite All you can eat sushi restaurants. Not only do you get to enjoy good sushi but they also include a bunch of appetizers and desserts to choose from included in the buffet that comes to your table. Their ordering system is annoying, unlike other ayce sushi places they only give you one ordering form per table. Therefore if you go with a hungry group this can be challenging. Specially like my friends where we end up ordering a ridicoulous amount of food and then just wanna curl up into fetal position and cry afterwards because your too full. P.s. Sushi Palace is really a misnomer. Sushi Factory is closer to what it is. Much more working class, than royalty. Sure. You can order all you want off the sheets on the table. Eventually, you will get most of it, but it's hard to know unless you are highly knowledgeable about the look of all the different fish, in all their formations. Last night, it took us a while to realize that the Eel we ordered never made it to our plates. No biggie. We ordered it again, and this time it arrived, in preciously small size. That's the upside of the AYCE phenomenon. Order it now, get it later. It makes no diff. You just pay for whatever, never each and every. Kind of leads to a feeding frenzy in some, a pleasant gluttony in others. To each his/her own. The quality was metza-metz. Some pretty good with the right size, shape, color, texture, temperature, and wrap. Others, not. Service was just confusing, with anyone and everyone making deliveries, and mostly oblivious to what was ordered, if not what was plated. Again, the concept creates a blasé attitude, because there is no strong attachment between desire and satisfaction. Quantity trumps quality. You didn't exactly pay for what you didn't get. It just got lost in the sashimi jumble. Assembly line sushi. High art reduced to its lowest common denominator. Acceptable, but I can't help feeling there is something missing. read more

I went to the Somerville location a few days ago so I decided to come to a closer location to my house. I was scared to come due to the iffy reviews but I got pretty good service here. We were missing 3 things off of our all you can eat order but it wasn't a big deal. We just kindly reminded our waiter about it and everything was okay. yezzzzzz sushi palace, low and behold, all you can eat sushi! There's not much to say besides the fact that this is probably one the better AYCE sushi places. Most of the fish is fresh, sometimes certain fishes aren't as fresh as i'd like but it's AYCE so what do you expect? I love the nigiri, the rolls, appetizers, ice cream, etc. You can't go wrong with this place, always come with an empty stomach! Service here is good, though some workers can't understand you. When it's busy, service can be really slow and food comes out even slower, but they're so popular and AYCE is always popular! The price is pretty good, $23-$26 depending on when you come. My party of 5 came here for my brother-in-law's birthday around 9:30 pm on Sunday. Still surprisingly busy - there was a small wait (under 10 minutes). The hours posted said it closed at 10pm because we put in our last order of buffet order around 10:30, and we never felt rushed to leave. In fact, they sat 3 ladies at the bar as we were leaving at 10:45. The total after tax, but before tip, was $120. You order by filling out paper menus, putting the quantity next to the desired item. The Sashimi was their saving grace, everything else for me was just so so. What brought them down from a 3 star to a 2 star rating was their service. PROs: - Sashimi was actually pretty decent, not the best, but definitely better than a lot of buffet sushi joints. (FYI, 20 pieces of sashimi is actually not a lot (about one small hand full of fish) due to the way the sashimi is portioned). My favorite was the white tuna, although the salmon wasn't bad either. - Although it's called sushi palace, you could other traditional Japanese foods like Teriyaki ("so so"), soups, udon, tempura, etc. - BYOB - we brought a bottle and they supplied the wine glasses. - A lot of tables/seating. CONs: - SERVICE is pretty awful. It started when the hostess told us to follow her and then before being seated, she diverted quickly into the kitchen, and all five of us were standing in the middle of the restaurant like idiots for 5 minutes before she came back out again. We had to wait over 15 minutes to get water and menus. When we got the menus, they left us alone for at least 10 minutes again, but they didn't give us pens or pencils to fill out the menu. After the first round of food, since no one checks up on us regularly, I just got up and grab more menus for our table. We also saw two different parties complain to management about the bad service, but "management" was unmoved to do anything proactive and was defensive. We were not offended enough to complain, but service was pretty bad. - No large round tables. My group of five was sat at regular table for 4 with a chair sticking out at one end. Larger groups sit lunch room cafeteria style (long rectangle formed with tables pushed together at the ends. - Rice to fish ratio in their special rolls - way too much rice. The spider roll, usually a favorite of my wife and I, was sub-par. - Lack of selection in their specialty rolls. - Ikura (my favorite - large orange oil filled cavier) is not on the menu. Ordering is pretty standard for a sit-down AYCE sushi restaurant -- you mark off what you want on a piece of paper and they will bring it to you. I came with a giant group and so we made some pretty hefty orders; we would order 20 pieces of one type of sashimi at a time. I liked that they came out to be decently sized because I know some other AYCE restaurants where if you make orders in larger quantities, they will basically cut the sashimi in half -__-. There's a vast selection ranging from hot foods to sushi rolls/sahimi pieces to dessert. The food was very fresh and service was quick. They also have a parking lot. Ok, first things first. Any AYCE place that includes sashimi is already a winner for me. Add the fact that its fresh sashimi and you have won my heart. They may not have exotic offerings like uni or toro, but what they do have is quite adequate for 20 bucks. I most enjoyed the mackerel, eel and white tuna. The salmon, albacore and squid were pretty good too. As for the special rolls, I wasn't a huge fan. The soft shell crab roll was decent, but I think the consensus at the table was "SASHIMI! LOTS AND LOTS OF SASHIMI!" All of the kitchen items we tried were good. The fact that they are made to order means they come out piping hot. The shrimp and chicken tempura were well battered. The pork katsu was moist and not overly breaded. The gyozo and shumai were nothing to write home about. The croquette was actually the surprise of the afternoon, especially paired with the orange-mango dipping sauce from the calamari. Sushi Palace is a fantastic restaurant! I loved their sushi handrolls and I will definitely order more of them the next time I visit. I loved the eel rolls with avocado as well. The restaurant has the style of a buffet and you can order as much sushi as you can eat. Be wary though, because you can be charged extra if you have excess sushi in your plate. The salmon rolls were okay and the sushi that has slices of white pieces over it in the picture are the yellowtail fish rolls. I didn't like them as much but I enjoyed trying so many varieties of sushi.   My friends and I also enjoyed the Green Tea ice-cream there and their Red Bean ice-cream (not pictured) and Chocolate ice-cream was fantastic as well. read more

The food here is decent esp for the amount and price you get. The rolls and sushi and esp, the seaweed salad was delicious! :9 I can't say that the udon, teriyaki chicken were that great...obviously not authentic stuff you get from Japanese places, but hey, I like the variety. The BEST part for me though was the green tea ice cream at the end! :9 Coolest thing is you (or your date) can bring your own bottle of wine or sake. I've never been to a restaurant that allows this...but apparently this is a NJ thing (?). I have mixed feelings about the whole finish your meal or pay extra thing. I mean yes, it prevents wasting food, but it's really pushing the envelope for those already fat people that make up 50% of the population in this country lol. read more

Tonight at Sushi Palace, I had the most appalling food service experience in recent memory. Our party of 5 was enjoying our meal at first before we were rudely interrupted (and later insulted) by a woman who identified herself as the owner. To be fair, the food was acceptable and the waitstaff was reasonably attentive. While we were in the middle of our meal, the owner arrived abruptly at our table and said that she was moving our table in order to accommodate a larger party of 18 that had just arrived. She did not ask us if this was OK, nor did she apologize for the inconvenience. She went ahead and moved our tables before we had a chance to respond, leaving half of our party sitting stranded in the middle of the dining room without a table. We then moved our own chairs, jackets, and belongings to the new table. The owner then prepared seating for a table of just 12 and squeezed the entire of party of 18 into that space. She then loudly apologized to that table for their inconvenience and said not a word to us. She quickly came back to ask us if we were ready to leave (which we were not). We continued eating our food and put in our orders for our final course. The owner then said loudly to the larger party that we were getting ready to leave and that they could have our space shortly. Following our final course, we asked to speak with the owner before leaving to convey that we did not feel valued as customers. The owner then quickly lost her temper (in front of a full restaurant) and delivered insults to our table. These insults centered around the idea that we were too young to be questioning her service and that we didn't understand the food service industry. As if this weren't already enough, she then halted the meal of the party of 18 to ask them to corroborate her story to our party of 5 (and ended up disturbing their meal as well). Needless to say, the meals of all restaurant patrons were affected by the owner's lack of control of her temper and severe lack of professionalism. She continued to discuss our party with other employees and point at our table until we settled the bill and left. Our party was nothing but respectful to the management throughout our meal, but this respect was certainly not reciprocated to us. It is clear that Sushi Palace places a higher value on customers that generate more revenue and does not prioritize the experience of smaller parties. Our party will not dine at this establishment again. read more

Okay AYCE sushi. Nothing really stand out, but for the most part, I think I'd recommend sticking to the sushi items. I don't think the fried items were particularly well done. It was mostly quiet when we were here for lunch, so the service was pretty quick. Plenty of parking in the lot. read more

This is a great place to go with your friends and try a bunch of different Sushi and asian cuisine! The quality of the food is good but don't expect it to be like a five-star sushi restaurant. My only complaint is that the service could be better. I always find myself having to wait over half an hour for a waitress and something always finds its way of not reaching the table. I would recommend going and trying the unlimited meal special because there are many good things to try but please stay patient. read more

For years and years, I've been pretty anti-sushi... despite dabbling a bit in sashimi and liking it. When this place started to get some good reviews, my husband convinced me that we should go and do their all-you-can-eat for $20. I agreed and we headed over on a week day night. The place was PACKED (which we both took as a good sign). We got a table (relatively quickly) and settled in for 2 hours of sushi/sashimi awesomeness. You could order anything you wanted, so we picked a good variety of items. I got to sample things to see what I liked and didn't like, so in that sense, it was great for someone like me. I think this place would be REALLY fun with a larger group. I loved the sashimi, and the chicken teriyaki, as well as the shrimp tempura! So good! read more

All you can eat for $25?! Count me in! I swear, I have never eaten so much sushi in my life before. On the bright side, I'm still not sick of it! Basically, you order an unlimited amount of rolls, sashimi, individual pieces, kitchen items, and dessert. The food is average but the deal makes it worth it. I would definitely come here again! Was highly disappointed with this place. Was excited for some mediocre all you can eat sushi since you can't expect too much from AYCE but it was worse than we had expected. Anyone who eats a lot of sushi knows the importance of rice. Of course, the quality of the fish is important but rice is also what makes a significant difference between different restaurants. The rice here was so hard that we felt like we were eating sushi that had been refrigerated. They got our order wrong and we had to ask each time for new paper so we can order more. Service is not friendly so it made the experience worse. We would definitely not come back to this place. Food comments: Hot foods such as gyoza, dumplings, katsu, udong were not bad. Specialty rolls: Rice was very hard Sashimi: Decent quality for AYCE The only thing I really enjoyed as sad as it may sound was the miso soup and eel nigiri. It's not Mr. Pi's but this is easily the best Japanese buffet that I've eaten at. Great kani and spicy seaweed salads to start. Ordered a few other things from the kitchen menu that were all good. Very pleasantly surprised at both the variety of selections and the good quality of the sushi rolls and pieces. Service was prompt and friendly. They brought the food out as fast as we were ordering it and the place was very busy tonight. This was a pleasant surprise both based on other reviews of this place and my own experience with other sushi buffets. Like I said, it's not my best sushi experience but as a buffet, it's really top-flight and it is a lot more than just sushi. It's just about an entire restaurant menu. Go hungry! read more
