Sushi One Spot in Montclair is definitely up there with some of my favorite AYCE sushi spots. The sushi quality is really good, and you have a tone of nigiri and rolls to pick from. They also have a wide array of appetizers you can get, and all the ones we got (katsu, teriyaki chicken, miso soup, etc.) were all very good. The standouts by far are the nigiri, which are very fresh and have a great rice to fish ratio. The service here is also very quick and our server was very welcoming and attentive. Overall, Sushi One Spot is definitely a solid option if you want AYCE sushi, and I will certainly be back. read more

Recently was enticed to return for their new tasting ayce menu that includes rolls, appetizers, and salad for 21.99. Think the value is genuinely unmatched and is definitely worthy of me returning in the future. However I think service could be slightly more hospitable, but seems like there's no incentive with autogratuity. The tablet system is more convenient for sure than waving down servers to take the paper, but they forgot to bring out a couple items and there's no way to visually keep track on the tablet. Mussels also could have been slightly better removed from their shell, some pieces you had to tug. Sushi One Spot is favorite ayce sushi restaurant! The ambiance is lovely and inviting, service is great, and the food is 1000/10. I find myself thinking about this place often because their sushi is that good. We went for the "medium-end" $39, and the quality and selection were beyond imagination. First, unlimited raw shrimp--which is rare! Went back again to see if their appetizers and some of the food are normally served hot, serve the correct the temperature... NOPE! food were served room temperature. All you can eat sushi. Great idea horrible execution. There were multiple tables who ordered their food after us then finished and paid prior to us receiving our food. We went last night and did our usual damage but we noticed some changes that would've been nice to know before ordering. They now only bring out 1 piece of nigiri per order -- us only knowing our previous way of them bringing 2 pieces per order we were a little confused when we got our first round. No worries though we learned for #2! We got the jalapeño salmon roll and another roll I cannot recall the name, eel, yellowtail, seared salmon and tuna, salmon, and tuna nigiri. Amazing! Food was better than I remembered from last time. Although the fish to rice ratio has changed. It seems to have more rice then fish. Also, on the lunch combination, their tempura is very greasy. The John Roll is also different. Before it used to be a mix of fish and mayo on top of a wonton crisp. Now it is in the form of a taco. Also, it didn't have much flavor to it. I had to add soy sauce on top. Service was great. Our server as well as other servers were very attentive. The environment of the restaurant is very open. A nice sushi spot with very good AYCE price. The food was delicious and goes well with the price. It's not like high end sushi but very good for the price, especially at lunch time. The cooked plates are pretty good and nigiri with raw fish is nice too. I won't recommend pieces with seaweed because the seaweed was quite damp and not crispy like it should be. This is my new FAVORITE sushi spot. This the vibe that Rancho Cucamonga location use to give. Although they share the same name, trust me the difference in quality is miles apart. This is honestly one of my go-to AYCE spots. They have a decent lunch menu and even a tasting menu for a crazy $19.95. We did the lunch just because I enjoy the salmon nigiri so much especially the cajun. The garlic salmon nigiri comes with a mayo sauce which is to me is too much. All the rolls are pretty dang good and the spicy garlic edamame is delicious but it tends to vary on how good it comes out day to day. You can't go wrong with the tempura veggies or shrimp. I recently ate here after they lowered their pricing to $30, which I honestly think is a great value. The food was really good for the price, and overall I enjoyed the meal itself. That said, the service was unfortunately the reason for the low rating. Our server, Jenny, was very dismissive throughout the entire experience. She rarely checked on us, only once on her own during the 1.5 hours we were seated, and most of the time we had to get her attention ourselves. When we asked for things or even said thank you, she didn't acknowledge us or make eye contact. I don't expect over-the-top friendliness, but basic attentiveness would've gone a long way. There's also a new policy where a 15% tip is automatically added, and it honestly felt like that removed any incentive to provide decent service. I work as a server myself, so I'm very understanding of how demanding the job can be, but I would never treat my own tables this way. One small but telling moment was when we asked for napkins and were given a single napkin... kind of the cherry on top. What makes this disappointing is that everything else was great. Disappointed. I came here less than a year ago and it was genuinely great, which made this visit even more surprising. I'm not sure what changed possibly management but the experience has clearly gone downhill. It honestly feels like we're seeing the end of the sushi era at many restaurants, where inflation and rising business costs are shrinking portions and hurting quality while prices stay the same. That was very noticeable here. Rolls that used to be 8 pieces are now 4, yet the pricing hasn't changed. The tablet ordering system didn't help either. It made the meal feel impersonal and confusing, and some items never arrived. Instead of relaxing and enjoying dinner, we were trying to keep track of what was actually ordered. Unfortunately, the food itself was disappointing. The sushi had very little flavor, and the salmon had an unpleasant, slimy texture. The mandatory 15% gratuity just added to the frustration given the overall experience. This place used to be very good, which makes this even more disappointing. They have different AYCE menus to choose from starting at $19.95. We decided to do the Dinner AYCE which was 38.95. This included almost everything on the menu including the appetizers. There is a premium AYCE that's 47.95. Service was quick and friendly. We were helped by Joyce. Very attentive! We also ordered a highball which was ok but the soju margarita was a 10/10. Something that I haven't seen before is that the rolls come with 4 pieces instead of 8. I liked this because we were able to try and order more rolls than usual! Nothing disastrous... just uneven. Like a chef forgot the "toro" in teamwork. As for the fish selection this is where my inner sushi purist sighed. The menu lacked depth, variety, and that spark of creativity or craftsmanship you expect from a standout sushi joint. The cuts and combinations felt safe... maybe a little too safe. I didn't get the sense that there was an experienced hand guiding the kitchen, which left the flavors flat and the excitement missing in action. To be clear: this isn't a bad spot. It's not a "run for the hills" sushi experience. It's perfectly average. You won't leave offended, but you also won't leave telling friends they must try it.
