I have been coming to Sushi One Spot for over 5 years, and it is incredibly disappointing to see what this restaurant has become since Joyce took over. My family has spent thousands of dollars here over the years. We would come 2-3 times a month and easily spend $100+ each visit. Unfortunately, my last FOUR visits have been terrible, and today was the final straw. Today I brought four additional people with me because this was once a restaurant I loved and recommended. Instead, I was completely embarrassed by how we were treated. Joyce tossed/threw straws at our table, brought out Dr Peppers and waters, and immediately told us that "the rules" were that we couldn't share sodas. Nobody said we were sharing sodas. The assumption, attitude, and way she spoke to us were completely unnecessary. The situation became so uncomfortable and humiliating that our entire group got up and walked out without eating. What bothers me most is that I have continued giving this restaurant chances because I've been a loyal customer for so many years. After four bad experiences, I'm done. You don't treat longtime paying customers this way--especially customers who have supported your business consistently for 5+ years and are bringing NEW customers through your doors. I never thought I would be leaving this review for a restaurant my family used to love, but the service and treatment under the current management have completely changed our opinion of this place. The minute we walked in to this restaurant, we did not feel welcomed. It was 12:04pm, 4 minutes after they opened for business. They were not busy. Only three tables were occupied. Two different staff members saw us waiting by the front and no one acknowledged us. After standing around and ignored for about 5 minutes, we were finally seated. We haven't been here in a while and the pricing structure has changed. Now, there are four levels of AYCE pricing. It ranges from $21.95 to $47.95. We did the AYCE $21.95 meal. It includes appetizers, salads and special rolls. Each table has an electronic ordering device. We place the order on the electronic device and the food gets delivered to our table. The quality of sushi was just okay. It was not high quality sushi. We did not liked having so much sauce on top of our sushi rolls. We prefer to be able to taste the raw fish without all that sauce on it. The pictures on the menu screen/device does not show sauce on the roll. But when it arrives, the rolls are covered with various sauces. Only a few of the rolls were not covered in sauces. I thought the tempuras were the worst. I did not liked the batter. I normally don't leave negative reviews, but what happened today was ridiculous. I've been coming here with my family for years, and the way we were treated today was enough for our entire group to get up and leave. We came in with a larger group expecting to have dinner and have a good time. Instead, Joyce immediately made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. She tossed straws at the table and then, while bringing out drinks, started telling us that we weren't allowed to share sodas. Nobody at our table had even said anything about sharing drinks, so I don't understand why we were approached like we were already doing something wrong. It wasn't even about the soda. It was the attitude and the way we were spoken to from the moment we sat down. Joyce lost a table that was prepared to spend around $350 plus an 18% tip over a $4 soda. That makes absolutely no sense. Joyce, if you read this, do better. This restaurant has changed dramatically under your management, and not for the better. I've watched the service here change dramatically, and today's experience was easily the worst. We hadn't even gotten to enjoy our meal before everyone decided we'd rather leave than spend our money somewhere we were being treated disrespectfully. We came in ready to pay for a table full of people. We walked out instead. After being customers here for years, that's extremely disappointing. We went for the "medium-end" $39, and the quality and selection were beyond imagination. First, unlimited raw shrimp--which is rare! I understand that it can get busy but to keep me waiting in the store for almost 30 minutes and still not have the food ready is crazy. They also have a wide array of appetizers you can get, and all the ones we got (katsu, teriyaki chicken, miso soup, etc.) were all very good. Imma give 5-stars just because the overall experience was well worth it. If you have $100, you can feed three people with the basic all-you-can eat menu. You don't even have to buy the $47 Premium menu, the basic $32 menu will pretty much give you access to 50+ or so items including side dishes. Best of all, you don't have to worry about "rounds" or writing things on a piece of paper. You can just order everything via the touchscreen on your table. Just tap on the picture, submit the order, and the servers will come by in like 5-10 minutes. And you just keep doing that until your 1 hour 30 minute time limit is done. It's so convenient. Keep in mind that they don't serve sashimi. They only have nigiri and rolls, plus other appetizers. That's the reason why their prices are cheaper. Quality wise? The nigiris are pretty good. They're not like "premium-authentic sushi from Tokyo" good, but they're still very good for the price. Appetizers are also included in the menu at no extra charge. They recently eliminated gratuity charge, so you can just add the tip later in the check, which is a big thumbs up for me. I'd give this 4-stars if the service was mediocre. We went last night and did our usual damage but we noticed some changes that would've been nice to know before ordering. We did the lunch just because I enjoy the salmon nigiri so much especially the cajun. The garlic salmon nigiri comes with a mayo sauce which is to me is too much. All the rolls are pretty dang good and the spicy garlic edamame is delicious but it tends to vary on how good it comes out day to day. You can't go wrong with the tempura veggies or shrimp. The food and the service at Sushi One Spot in Montclair normally earn five stars with me. The issue I had with my last visit, was that they now have kiosks on each table and it is the only way to place your order. The food and service was good, as usual. The last time we were there, about six weeks ago, they had the kiosks, but when we told the waitress we didn't want to use it, she brought us a paper to fill out for our order, like they used to. This time we weren't given that option. Many people, it's not just me, do not want to touch these kiosks. They are filthy and in this post Covid world, I try to touch as little as possible out in the world. I wrote a review on another site mentioning this while also stating that the food and service was excellent. I received the most nasty, snarky comment from who I assume, was the owner of the restaurant. They basically told me that I should just stay home if I'm that worried about using a kiosk. Said they've been using the kiosk for a while now so I must not have been there for a very long time. It wasn't that long ago. I don't know if a teenager owns this place or if they hire a kid to respond to their reviews, but it was rude and completely unnecessary. The previous manager was the sweetest woman. She always remembered our names and that one of us needed the gluten-free soy sauce. We were supporting this restaurant towards the end of the pandemic and we worried for its future.
