There was a period in my professional life where the directors of my department would routinely invite everyone to lunch at Sushi O. I have NO idea why, but I swear I ate here once a week for over a month at one point. The only bonus was that I didn't have to pay for my meals. That said, had I been paying, I would have been really upset about it. I should admit that I'm not a big sushi eater, as in I will eat it, but I've never thought to myself, "hmm I could go for sushi tonight". When we would go I would get one of the business box lunches. Every single time, no matter which "box lunch" I tried I would feel sick after. The food never sat well with me and generally just didn't taste good (always salty tasting). While the decor may be modern and the restaurant clean, it didn't take me more than a vist to realize I just did not like this place. We had a really great meal here tonight. The prices are on the high side, but the food is really pretty and very tasty. Most of it was a little spicier than we would generally have gone for, but it wasn't too much. It actually made the meal more interestering for us because it was nice to explore some spicy without it being too spicy. We ordered the following dishes and they were all fantastic: Starburst roll 007 roll (highly recommend) Crab rangoons (highly recommend) Power roll fried potstickers We had drinks and spent around 90 bucks and left very full. I've been going to Sushi-O about once a year, ever since they opened in 2008. Though the restaurant is located just a couple miles from my house, I don't go more often because the sushi is pricey, especially at dinner. Last week I went for lunch on a Friday. We ordered four different types of sushi rolls (eel, tuna, California Roll, and I think the last was an avocado-cucumber). We also ordered the Teriyaki salmon, which came with miso soup and ginger salad. We requested ALL sauces be put on the side rather than ON the food itself, so we could better regulate how many calories we were ingesting. Even though the restaurant wasn't very crowded, our order got a little messed up. The eel sushi roll had sauce ON it, and the waiter served us Teriyaki chicken instead of salmon. When we brought it to his attention, he brought us the corrected items and allowed us to keep the incorrect items. The sushi wasn't bad, but nothing special. The eel was our favorite. The avocado and tuna sushi rolls had virtually no taste at all... like eating plain rice. The Teriyaki chicken and salmon were not bad, but nothing great. Ditto the miso soup and ginger salad. I did like the way they got the outside of the salmon slightly crispy. I won't be racing to get back to this restaurant anytime soon. Especially since there is an all-you-can-eat sushi place a couple miles down Midlothian Turnpike (Hong Kong Buffett). Of course, the ambiance isn't the same, but when I eat out, I prefer to pay for food more than ambiance. read more

I enjoy Sushi-O for lunch meetings. Not much of a fan of the dinner menu though. The Dumpling Soup is delicious and I always upgrade to that from the standard watery soup that comes with your meals. I prefer the lunch atmosphere over dinner and the bar can be very crowded. The appetizers are fantastic - the sauce is not too salty that they use for the gyoza. First the good news - the ambience is nice at Sushi-O. They have done a nice job decorating with a modern touch. And the presentation of the food is also great. Sushi-O is very good at looking pretty. And now the bad news - everything but the looks. Went in on a Sunday which is not normally a great day to grab sushi because fresh deliveries of fish don't typically come in on Sundays. So, time to test the standards for what the restaurant will serve. Ordered salmon roe. Salmon roe is a nice test because it's so obvious when roe has gotten old and dried out. What came out, after an inexplicable amount of time, was terrible. We debated whether to stay at all, but then decided to give the restaurant a chance. We pointed out the stale roe to the waitress and asked her about how often deliveries came in. She told us the most recent delivery had been the day before so we asked if she could find out which specific fish had come in the day before. She came back and told us yellow tail and salmon. We limited the order to yellow tail sashimi, a salmon roll, a spider roll, and a california roll. The yellow tail sashimi was fine, but sliced thinly. Each of the rolls had horribly gluey rice. The crab in the spider roll had been pre-fried. Many sushi restaurants do this, but given the high prices it was surprising here. The california roll was another good test - this basic shouldn't be hard. We've had better california rolls from grocery stores. The food was mediocre at best, inedible at worst. Meanwhile, the waitress pulled a serious attitude the second we pointed out the salmon roe. We were careful to stay positive after that point, while she seemed to make it her mission to slam plates in front of us, grit her teeth, and generally act like a B. Great! I question whether some of the better reviews were based primarily on the creativity of some of the signature rolls. Creative or not, freshness should be the priority for a sushi restaurant. Don't let a mango sauce on stale fish fool you into thinking this is good food. read more

Sushi O is one of my favorite sushi spots in Richmond. Sushi O has a very nice atmosphere. The service is good. I consider Sushi O more of an upscale sushi restaurant. It's a bit on the pricey side. I love the appetizers at Sushi O.Last time I went to Sushi O, the menu changed a bit. Some of the good rolls were replaced with other rolls. I personally liked the older menu better. So we decided to try to come back for dinner at 8:55 and they were closed again! There were a couple of people inside. It looked like they had just locked the door at 8. THIS PLACE IS FREAKING AWESOME!!! I am a huge sushi fan and my favorite place thus far in Richmond has been Akida....but this place is now TIED FOR NUMBER ONE! This place, while in a medical office/strip mall type building, is like a NYC restaurant when you get inside. HUGE Buddha sculpture behind the sushi bar, large bar area with AWESOME martinis (try the frog and lily one, it's sooo good, honeydew & cantelope flavored), and large dining area. Great dark/relaxed atmosphere. I had the mango roll (delicious) and another roll, i believe it was a dragon roll but I can't remember the name because after 2 martinis i was feeling no pain! but it was super delicious. My family and I just dined here last night. The food was good but the service was AWFUL! The "supposed" manager/bartender was RUDE as heck. Not only was he on his cell phone in the restaurant on the floor ALL night ignoring tables and customers. BUT he was Smug and arrogant when approached. Our server was very rude as well. She didn't bother to clear our tables all evening or apologize about waiting over 45 minutes for an order of sushi. She also brought our dinner and while dropping it off asked us which type of rice we wanted... either white or fried? Um... wasn't that to be determined while placing the order. Needless to say, that prolonged things some more. Long story short...... their owner needs to take a REAL HARD LOOK at his/her staff. First time experience here was a disappointment. When I arrived there was no one around to assist with seating. Because I was alone I decided to sit at the bar for faster service. There was a woman behind the bar who saw me take a seat but never once asked if I needed anything or if someone would be right with me. When I spoke she ignored me and left the bar as if I were invisible. Another waiter then comes behind the bar and once again I'm not acknowledged. The restaurant was not as busy and even if it was it wouldn't have taken no more than 3 seconds to let a customer know that someone will be right there to assist. I had a much better overall experience last night at Sushi O than the previous times and I'm adding a star. The service from start to finish was friendly and on the mark, and the food was delicious! We ordered the First Base meal again because it's so tasty and varied in flavor, and added a Picasso Roll to try. It was very good and had a nice spicy kick to it. I've been to Sushi O many times and have had an above par result majority of the time. Usually this is our date night spot when visiting the family and needing to get back into the city. If you're going to be going for your basic sushi it's a great place but may be a bit more expensive than what you're looking for. Their specialty rolls are REALLY good. Very creative, delicious, and at times affordable. We went last night for my girl's surprise birthday party and there were just a couple responses from the new Sushi O folks in our group. I made reservations way early so I knew we'd be ok and it worked out great. The atmosphere was as expected, a bit too cool for school, but that comes with the territory of every decent fusion sushi place. The only thing that wasn't great was the service. We were somewhat rushed into ordering food right off the bat with out any drink orders which was frustrating. I like to drink a little before i eat. After we ordered food the server took a bit to bring the drinks and then was not very good about serving the people who weren't ready to order drinks yet. In the end, the food was great, our group enjoyed their time, and we left full. Here's the thing though....because we were a larger group there was a 20% gratuity added on automatically. I really enjoyed this place when my sister took me there with a group of our friends. The prices are a bit higher than what i would like to pay for sushi, but they have some awesome specialty rolls that I haven't seen anywhere else. The way this restaurant is set up makes it an ideal setting for a group outing. The drinks are reasonably priced and they bring steamed edamame for you to munch on while you wait for your food to come out. Yay.
