Great sushi! We went on New Year's Eve knowing it would be busy so we got there at opening time and there was already a line. We were the last to get a seat and we're very pleased by that. It was new year so it was crazy and the staff was a little out of sorts but in the end they pulled through. The sashimi was amazing, so was the gyoza and black cod. It's a small intimate place that doesn't take reservations. M sushi in Durham still wins for best sushi but this is a distant second. Also, the hot sake is wonderful! read more

I'm quite picky about my sushi. Sushi Mon is the real deal. Why? First is the quality of their ingredients. They fly in their fish fresh from all over the world. Most places do a combination of frozen and fresh a few days a week, and not from anyplace exotic. Some fish do not come frozen because they don't handle freezing well. So many places use frozen and farmed fish, and you can see it in the color, texture, marble and most importantly flavor. Salmon and Fatty Tuna are often the first to succumb. You can taste Sushi Mon diligently sources good fish. Second is their recipes. Sashimi and traditional sushi reveal the quality of their ingredients and preparation skills. When you order traditional and simple, you cannot hide behind inferior ingredients and prep, even in the rice recipe. They unabashedly list their traditional sushi right in the center of their menu. But the strength of Sushi Mon is in their modern sushi recipes. This of course showcases the creativity of the chef. One of the quickest ways to check authenticity of sushi is looking at the size of the sushi. Large sushi screams cheap. Small bordering on tiny means it is meant to be eaten in one bite, and becomes a small morsel that conveys a whole palette of intentional flavors. Each dish was thoughtfully designed to highlight the fish and the flavor, and showcases the chef's sound training. Third is the execution, which includes menu design, decor, ambiance, service, and overall experience. Their good wait staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Dishes are artfully appetizing. Decor is simple but pleasing. Overall, best tasting fish I've had in the area, great recipes and menu both traditional parts and modern, excellent service all for a reasonable price. We received recommendations from the chef/owner, which steered us toward the best dishes. Sushi Mon tops my list for special occasions and any excuse when craving for sushi. read more

Honestly this is the best sushi spot I have been to in Raleigh! It's a little hard to find as I believe it's located in an office building and the atmosphere there calls for business casual attire. The restaurant itself is pretty small so I would use the Yelp app to join the waitlist ahead of time. Truly any sushi item you order here will be fantastic and also fairly priced! Finally made it to Sushi Mon last night and 5 stars are not good enough of a rating. Our server was very good to start. Talked about what they do differently like the imported soy sauce and how they make their own Wasabi by peeling the root and grinding the root. Very different taste. It's almost like a relish. She was very friendly, smiled, a little small chat. We ordered a regular roll and a speciality roll. Brought the regular roll first then the specialty roll when we had finished the first roll. Nice touch. Sushi was amazing. I had the spicy tuna and the rainbow roll. It's not a BOGO sushi restaurant and not a big variety of rolls but it was excellent and look forward to returning soon. read more

Gosh, I don't want this place to be over crowded but I have to- this sushi restaurant is the best RDU or the entire NC has to offer. Having been used to sushi quality and grade from Los Angeles and Oahu has been terrible when it came to NC. M sushi, Baku from Charlotte can't come close to what Sushi Mon can offer when it comes to... Sushi. I've been here once and I loved it then and returned recently I had the sashimi plate. I usually don't do this, ordering random picked fishes just because there are certain fishes I do not like so I was hesitant at first but ordered it anyways and I was glad that I did. The quality of the fish was just exceptional. Very fresh- thick traditional cut. I have to say the price is very reasonable especially for the quality of fish. As far as nigiri- the rice can be improved but the fish or caviar (fish eggs) are very well flavored so it almost made up for the "mid" rice. Ordered udon and my son loved it. They changed the butter fish from traditional to something innovative- personally I liked the traditional better and cure t butterfish needs more salt. Gyoza was mediocre. I have to say, sushi is way to go more than the hot food. All in all, I am so glad sushi Mon exist. Service was exceptional and ambience is pretty nice too. Had a short business trip in Raleigh and based on the Scott S review, I knew I had to visit this place. WOW. I was welcomed by Shio, Alex, and King Edward (the sushi bar manager). They provided me a personal service with a tasting of various nigiri, one by one. The miso soup is like nothing else - full of flavor. The hot sake is served the way it should be. Warning -- If you want the true experience, you must pay respect to King Edward by ordering the Ama Ebi. See my picture -- It is raw shrimp nigiri with two crispy shrimp heads. The sound made me nervous, but I had to pay respect to King Edward and I am glad I did. It was amazing. Everything was amazing. If you are not in Raleigh, I would tell you that Sushi Mon is worth making a trip just for this experience. read more

Service don't worth the money while you're paying $130 for two person. they don't pay much attention to you when you just need the soy sauce for your sushi plate, waiting over an hour, people sit next to us come later already get the food. And we just have to wait, Wait for taking order, wait for appetizers which takes about over 40 minutes while you can see they set the food there for long time . Wait for sushi plates, wait for sauce dish , wait for soy sauce. We understand it would take time to prepare the food. But can't keep waiting to be served for something you definitely need. Wait for the food for almost an hour, sushi plates came out with no soy sauce dish , waiting again, finally run the soy sauce and wasabi, only give one dish soy sauce for two people, do we have to share soy sauce? for $49 dollars Entree , we didn't get what we pay for. very Mad! Here with an updated review and I'm sure I will be back to update it once again when Sushi Mon moves over to their brand new, permanent location. This review update is for my takeout experience last week. I have never ordered takeout from Sushi Mon until this experience and I will say that it went pretty smoothly. Ordering online is quick and easy. I got text notifications letting me know when my order was ready, which was nearly 15 minutes before my scheduled pickup time. The Sushi-Sashimi Bento for lunch cost me ~$30 after taxes and tip. Not a cheap lunch but I deserved it, lol. Everything tasted great, as always. Definitely still prefer dining in, but the last few times I tried finding a table, they were already booked! After this good experience I think I will order takeout more often! read more

I am having a hard time with this review because there was nothing wrong with the place, we liked our waiter, the quality of the food was good. There were 5 of us do we had to sit in the lobby but it was pretty enough. However I have no real desire to go back and when 5 people leave a place and all say it was good but not where I would choose to go back for sushi it just kind of summarizes it. Nice experience (love their soy sauce holders) but there's nothing about it that's crave-able, nor do they host a full bar it's just lacking on the whole. read more

I think I had ordered an omakase, truffle tuna roll, and like a regular salmon roll but wound up with two truffle tuna rolls. A lucky mix up for me! Also their miso soup is legit! Ordered takeout and had a bad experience. While the quality of the food was good, we had two major problems enjoying it: 1. All sauces were forgotten. No truffle sauce for truffle tuna roll (the main point of this role), no eel sauce, no dipping sauce for goyoza. 2. I crunched into what appears to be a large apple stem inside my truffle tuna roll! This roll is made with apple chips and somehow this choking hazard made its way into my mouth. I will email the restaurant regarding this and give them an opportunity to allow us to try their food again, this time properly prepared. read more

Sushi Mon has the most ELEGANT and FRESHEST flavors and ingredients I've ever tasted! Upon entering, I was met with a modern and sleek atmosphere, and friendly staff! Eric was attentive, timely, and really fun. Chris, the owner, also greeted us personally and told us that menu items, such as the tuna, was freshly prepared and imported from Spain the morning of our visit. The ~300lbs tuna's head was also at the bar during my visit! Sushi Mon has such refined dishes with ingredients from all over the world, and is priced fairly considering how well the portions are and how decadent the food is!! I wish there were a way to rate Sushi Mon an infinite amount of stars! *24hr Pork Belly: Delicate cuts of juicy iberico pork belly that literally melted in my mouth. The pork belly was served in a skillet and was cooked to PERFECTION. This pork belly has made my favorites list! There are small and large portions of this appetizer; only difference being the size and rice being included in the bigger portion. *Udon: Soft noodles cooked in a really flavorful broth! There's onion flakes and greens in it to add extra flavor. Perfect portion size as well! *Hokkaido Scallop: Fresh, soft pieces of scallop on top of rice! This can either be served as sushi with rice or sashimi style. These large scallops melted in my mouth and tasted amazing. I've never had scallops like these that were so fresh! *Kiss of Fire Roll: A roll that brings the heat! This spicy roll is packed with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, albacore, serrano pepper, and garlic ponzu! Great combination of flavors for those who like it hot! *Truffle Tuna Roll: A gorgeous roll with regular tuna, spicy tuna, truffle oil, creamy ponzu, apple chip, and pickle radish! This roll had a really satisfying texture and taste! *Salmon Crunch Roll: A tasty variety of textures in this roll! It's sweet with a bit of spice. There's shrimp tempura, yuzu mango, mango, a balsamic soy reduction, and sweet chilli! *Rock Salt Seared Salmon Plate: Beautifully presented dish with salmon seared amazingly, sumiso, serrano, yuzusu, and crispy shallots! *Vegetarian Roll: Perfect flavor combination of fruits and vegetables wrapped in rice! There's mango, pickle radish, arugula, avocado, soy vinaigrette, and (my favorite) a yuzu mango puree! So many pops of juiciness and freshness! This is definitely one of my favorite rolls! *Salmon and Tuna Sashimi: Fresh fresh FRESH cuts of classic fishes, salmon and tuna! Emphasis on the FRESH. The fish were so soft and buttery in texture, and didn't have an overly salty sea taste. This is definitely the freshest fish I've ever had in NC. Absolutely divine!! *Chirashi Bowl: A bowl with a little bit of everything! Pickle radish slices, tamago, and caviar sits on top of the bowl. There's a variety of fish like salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and whitefish on top of rice. Epic combinations packed in one bowl! Dessert: *Tamago: Soft and fluffy cake-like eggs! The flavor is so rich and slightly sweet. It's light and doesn't make you feel heavy after a meal. This was a highlight for me! *Popcorn: Sweet popcorn on top of a black sesame ice cream and a bread roll! The flavors were very unique and worked well together. The popcorn and ice cream give off a nutty flavor while the bread roll provides a sweetness. Interesting! This intimate spot has the freshest flavors I've ever had. The food and atmosphere is high-class and elevated, and is definitely worth visiting. Holy smokes. I had the most amazing sushi this evening at Sushi Mon and I am not kidding. Unquestionably five stars here for flavor, quantity and great service. I sat at a table because I figured I would be on my phone the whole time. I probably should have sat at the sushi bar instead. Because the art being prepared there was amazing. For dinner, I chose three plates. First, the salmon lettuce wrap which was amazing. Delicious and slightly messy but wow, full of flavor and texture. Second, a scallop cold plate that absolutely blew my taste buds away. Fabulous and a great portion. And for my main course, the 7 piece sashimi plate. My waiter pointed out each piece and the hand-ground wasabi (in addition to the usual powdered). Oh. My. This was insane and the two big pieces of perfect tuna were unbelievably delicious. Possibly the best sashimi I have ever had. Certainly the best that I can remember. Just delicious. Great service from my waiter. I think he introduced himself as Nakamoto. This place is next level! We ordered the craft hot sake, which was tasty in its own right but also paired well with the food. The rock salt seared salmon was delicious and served on a slab of salt, so the longer you leave it on the plate, the tastier the salmon gets. The crunch salmon roll was also excellent, as was the donburi, which was fun to try since I haven't seen that on a lot of menus. This newer sushi restaurant on Hillsborough Street raises the bar for sushi in Raleigh in a variety of ways. From the fresh fish to the interesting small plates but most importantly, with decor. Sushi Mon has a sophisticated West coast feel with locally sourced live moss wall, polished marble wall-hanging and more. Add in house-made soy sauce and real wasabi paste and you know you're in for a surprise. I've been here several times both on a comped visit and paid and it's always a tasty and classy experience. The one challenge to get to Sushi Mon is the parking. There is very little on-street parking and don't even consider the Zaxbys lot that sits right in front. Your best bet is a side-street like Dixie Trail. Overall I'm hoping they do well given what they bring to this street, a high-end, deluxe Japanese dining experience near NC State! read more

I loved going to Sushi Mon when they were on Hillsborough Street but totally forgot about them after they had closed for COVID. I was recently working on a traffic study near Glenwood & 440 and noticed that Sushi Mon had reopened moved in to the development just south of the interchange. Their current space is tiny (used to be a coffee shop!) but they are planning on moving across the street to a much larger space within the same development once that space is ready! There was outdoor seating available when I went which was great because it was a nice day! I ordered 2 of their specialty rolls - the rainbow roll and the truffle tuna roll, the Hokkaido scallop, and an order of tamago. Everything was great! The rainbow roll with the tuna, salmon, yellowtail and avocado was my favorite. I wish they still had the salmon lettuce wraps and Mon Special roll so if someone at the restaurant is reading this......... read more

Delicious sushi spot in Raleigh with a nice, modern atmosphere and a great menu. I was here with two friends on a Friday night. I think we had a reservation, but we did not need one because the restaurant was actually pretty empty when we got there at normal dinner time. Still, we were excited because of the reviews and photos we saw. Lots of stuff looked great on the menu. I ended up going with the truffle tuna roll and toro. Really enjoyed both. Fish was very fresh. It was also my first time having truffle on sushi and I thought that was a great touch. Would definitely recommend both. We shared mochi and macarons for dessert.
