The fish here is fresh. Period. From sashimi to your rolls to the pork belly, just wow. Small place that doesn't take reservations so go when it opens if you want to eat inside. Otherwise you may end up eating in the "lobby" area of the building or waiting. Yellowtail crudo was out of this world as was the rock salt seared salmon and the miso black cod. 24-hour pork belly was so tender and flavorful. Their house salad is not your average salad. A definite must try!! All their rolls were delicious. Didn't try the one with the cream cheese. Not a fan of cream cheese in my rolls. They had this dessert with toast and black sesame ice cream topped with caramel popcorn. Yummmm! Don't pass it that up! My wife and I came for Triangle Restaurant Week, and overall, we had a very good experience. We made reservations beforehand (thankfully, because there was a 45+ minute wait when we got there at 7pm on a Saturday night). We were seated at the sushi bar (by choice), and got to see the head chef in action first-hand. I will admit that sitting at our particular seats (at the end of the sushi bar) got a little crazy at times, because all the food was coming through our section of the bar, and there was naturally a lot of back-and-forth talking between the host, waitresses, and chef. So if you want a more peaceful / quiet experience, I would recommend not sitting here. I will start by saying Sushi Mon did Restaurant Week well. Too often, restaurants I have gone to for restaurant week give small portions or sub-standard dishes because that's what everyone is coming in for. Sushi Mon was very generous in their selection and variety. Our meal started off with the chef's mother's miso soup. It was very different from any other miso soup I've had in that it had a LOT of ingredients in it, including salmon. It was delicious and I loved it. The Garden Salad was ok - it was mostly arugula with a soy vinaigrette. The XO Tuna was on the heavy side because of the truffle aioli, but I enjoyed it. The pink peppercorn gave the dish a nice zing. The Scallop Crudo was also a great appetizer - excellent flavor with quality scallop. I got the chirashi bowl, which included a mix of raw fish over rice and some toppings. I enjoyed the variety of fish, as well as the amount of fish I got. The pickles were the perfect combination of texture and flavor. The only thing I would have changed is I would have left out the tamago - perhaps would have requested it on the side. The slight sweetness of the tamago didn't go well with the rest of the bowl, in my opinion. My wife got the 5-piece nigiri, which she really enjoyed. The fish was of good quality and taste. We both were able to try the Truffle Tuna roll as well as the Crunch Salmon roll. I'm glad we got to try them, but I personally preferred the nigiri and chirashi bowl. I prefer simple when it comes to sushi, I guess. For dessert, we tried the mochi and macarons combo as well as the chocolate mousse cake. The mochi was great, with ice cream in the middle, and the macarons were also enjoyable. The chocolate mousse cake was surprisingly good. I'm generally not a big fan of chocolate cakes because of how heavy they can be, but this one was lighter than a typical chocolate mousse cake. I still preferred the mochi, but all the desserts were good. The service was friendly, but there are some wrinkles that can be ironed out in their systems. There seemed to be a lot of miscommunication - I was twice served a dish that was later taken away, because it was supposed to be for someone else or it didn't come out correctly. Granted, it was a busy night that night, so I'm hoping things will get sorted out. The parking situation isn't ideal, either - since the parking lot adjacent to the building is used only for Zaxby's. So it's either street parking, or on the weekends, the Dan Allen Parking Lot is free. The food was enjoyable, though - and I will be back to try more of the menu! read more

I'm very picky when it comes to sushi. I only have maybe 2 places I love eating sushi in the triangle area. Well, after today, I now have 3! Sushi Mon is located on Hillsborough St, a little further down from the "college area". Though parking can be still difficult. There's usually a parking deck close by but they also have street parking as well. Chef Tom and co-owner Chris are new to NC but they did an amazing job incorporating Arts from NC artists. Throughout the restaurant you fill find local arts from Asheville, Burlington, Pittsboro, and Raleigh. It doesn't look too big from the outside but it's very spacious. There are booths, small tables, sushi bar, and a regular bar. So let's get to the food, I don't think I've had this good of a quality sushi in the area. They get their ingredients delivered daily from all over the world and then prepares them for 8 hours. With that being said, they are only open for dinner but trust me, the wait until dinner is well worth it! It will be unlike any sushi experience you've had in the Triangle. Sushi Mon has great selection of sashimi, sushi, rolls, and tapas. If you are feeling adventurous or have a celebration, I'd recommend Omakase dinner with the Chef! If you let the Chef know of any allergies, he makes a series of food for you. It is absolutely delightful. As far as their menu goes, you may notice a little change over time. Chef Tom wants to keep everything fresh, give the customers something to look forward to, and showcase his creativity. But they will have a set menu that will not change. One of the times that will stay on the menu is Mother's Miso Soup. I really enjoyed their unique miso soup. It tastes better than the regular ones since it has fish chunks, tofu, and cabbage in it. Very different! If you are like me and you like to drink a little with dinner, don't you worry. They have local beers and cider, sake, and wine. If not, they have sodas and hot tea as well. We are regular in this place, but today turns out to be an absolute disappointment. After being seated, we waited for more than 20 mins, and yet no water or nothing provided. Meanwhile, the couple next to us, came at least 10 mins later than we did, had their food order and part of their order being served. They made it very obvious that they don't want our business. It makes me wonder if the serving order in this place depends on how light the customer's skin color is. I came here often for the good service. When I arrived at Sushi Mon worried about how good sushi can be hidden in an office park. I was so wrong. The staff welcomed me into a beautifully clean and modern restaurant. My server, Minchi, told me how they have specially curated soy sauce and pickled wasabi from Japan. The hot sake they serve is craft quality and served like a fine tea. Alex the sushi chef walked me through an amazing assortment of sashimi and ensured a food experience I will never forget. Went on a date night here, the atmosphere was perfect for it. They had a little candle each table, it's very cozy. Staff and waiters were awesome. The sushi is pretty good, you can tell they put a lot of flavoring and natural fresh ingredients and their sushi. It makes a huge difference, their dessert menu is also cute and perfect because it's not overwhelming, but just the perfect amount for two people or even a few people to share. Yum!!!! I will be back, this place has a lovely, intimate dining area and the food is delicious. I HIGHLY recommend you put your name on the wait list as it is a very small interior and the wait can easily be 30 min+. Overall though this is new go to spot, I can't wait to come back. The sushi is fresh, the ingredients are quality and the flavors are top tier. I almost went back the next day to get the omakase again for lunch, it was SOOOO good. I even saw my non sushi lover boyfriend enjoy! I couldn't even get a pic of the full plate because we already dug in! But as you can see their presentation is beautiful. The miso soup is also pretty unique, its got salmon in it. My first time trying it that way so thats a heads up, I will say the broth was so savory and rich though so I really liked that part. TLDR: There's a fair bit of competition in the RDU area for sushi, and I think Sushi Mon is absolutely competing for the top spot. They recently moved (again) to a slightly larger space in the same office complex, now with a bit larger and more comfortable trappings with easy view into the kitchen. It's weirdly hard to find, because there's not much signage, just a little poster on the old location telling you to go to the new one (without specifying that it's literally across the street), on the first floor of an office building. It certainly doesn't *look* like a place that should be charging what it does (except at lunch, which is quite reasonable - do the Sushi Combo for $19). If I compare this place to the closest excellent Japanese restaurant -- Waraji -- they fall short in a lot of ways. The servers and chefs alike are younger and the inexperience sometimes shows, but I should be clear, I've never had a *bad* experience. Mostly the inadequacies -- as ever? -- are connected to size: Sushi Mon doesn't have the big space, the adjoining bar, the wide selection of sushi and hot food, the expansive sake menu, the short-run specials, and so on. What they do offer is *far* more creativity in their food, meaning you're more likely to get a really transformative experience if you land on the right items at Sushi Mon. It also means that sometimes the dishes are overwrought. There's a lot of stuff like truffle oil and "yuzu mango" sauce that I find detracts from the quality of the ingredients. But man, when they're doing it, they're *doing it right*. Instead of a cheap broth and a couple tofu cubes the miso soup includes fish and cabbage and mushrooms to enrich the dish. The trio of fish collars ("Kama") is absolutely outstanding and really makes you appreciate how wonderful simple food can be. Some of the chef-topped nigiri are spectacular, especially the torched salmon and yellowtail. The 3-course Nigiri Omakase is $45 as of this writing, and I would strongly recommend it to someone looking to give the place a real shot. It includes a miso soup ($6), 8 individually-dressed nigiri (which would be ~$44 on its own), plus a spicy tuna hand-roll ($8) that was one of the best things I've eaten, and a little bite of cake (they call it "Tamago" but don't mean an omelet). Or get creative; Sushi Mon certainly has. read more

I had the sushi lunch special, which was 6 pieces of nigiri and a spicy tuna hand roll. The nigiri was so well balanced and very well prepared. No need for additional soy sauce or wasabi, it had everything it needed. The spicy tuna hand roll was also very clean. No mayo-y sauce. Seemed like a mix of tuna and maybe some chili paste? The rock salt seared salmon was melt in your mouth sensational. Even the miso was exceptional. We got one of the lunch special options, enjoyed every piece, and found it a good deal. The service was excellent. We plan to return soon. It's a small but nice restaurant. Sushi Mon delivers in freshness and flavor. We arrived right at 5:30pm and did not have to wait, and was promptly seated. Our order was: Sashimi 14 piece, Nigiri omakase, yellow tail crudo, truffle tuna, and green tea. The sashimi was fresh, buttery, and a generous cut! Most sushi places do not deliver such a thick slice, and I was definitely full off the plate of sashimi, which is wonderful! (But that does not mean I stopped eating haha). The yellow tail crudo was amazingly vibrant and their thick yuzu sauce was to die for. The truffle tuna also hit all the right notes. Strong truffle flavor, nice spice to the tuna, and overall delicious roll. The miso soup had all the right punches of umami and the green tea was absolutely delicious. BUT there is one point that is bringing Sushi Mon from 5 stars, and that is their sushi rice. The rice was a bit too wet and kind of sticky. So it distracted from the good piece of sushi. If they can nail down their rice, this place would be golden! I was very excited to come here for awhile now, and was very fortunate to score a dinner reservation on Valentine's Day. I had heard great things all around for Sushi Mon and so I certainly had high expectations. I went with the prix fixe menu: - salad and miso soup - XO tuna - yellowtail crudo - rock salt seared salmon - truffle tuna roll - 7 piece nigiri - popcorn honey toast with sesame ice cream Husband got udon noodles and a sashimi plate. I liked the simple nigiri/sashimi: fish was fresh and buttery. Husband's tempura udon was good too, and we loved the rock salt salmon. Unfortunately, we both agreed that the xo tuna and truffle tuna roll were horrendous. We literally could not finish, the truffle oil was so overwhelming. It was used so heavy handedly that it was all I could smell and taste. You don't cover up high quality tuna with truffle oil or whatever. This was so, so bad to me. While I was eating the dessert, the popcorn toast, I sometimes had to stop because I could still smell the truffle tuna roll on the plate adjacent to the ice cream. It was so strong, that it ruined my dessert experience. I wish I was exaggerating, but alas it's all true. I highly anticipated going here to Sushi Mon after hearing so many great things about their restaurant, its menu and of course sushi. So when I saw them on the Triangle Restaurant Week list of participating restaurants,  I was so excited! Located near NC State, Sushi Mon offers "elevated takes on sushi and Japanese fare". Their 4 course dinner menu for $35 took my tastebuds on a culinary journey. They had ingredients imported from Bangkok,Thailand and Spain but even featured local food too. My favorite bite of the night: EVERYTHING.  Seriously,  you can't go wrong no matter what you choose. They us a truffle aioli sauce on some of their dishes that I want to put on everything. If you can get seating at the sushi bar, do so. It's quite an experience to watch their culinary talents at work and they take the time to tell you about the food, how it's meant to be enjoyed, etc. You get a dinner and a show when you sit at the sushi bar in my opinion. I enjoyed my meal with hot sake which was a reasonable price of $6. I tried a unique dessert, which is called Honey Toast. They take an Hawaiian roll and top it with Black sesame ice cream and caramel popcorn. Sounds weird but taste so good. I can't wait to go back on a date night to enjoy food from their regular menu.
