Half the family went to eat in, and two of us could not make it, but got food taken home - 1 beef teriyaki don, 1 chicken curry katsu don, and 1 negitoro maki. I woke up twice with diarrhea in the middle of the night, my partner did this morning, and so did my mom who dined in... And no, my mother was out all day, and the only meal we shared together was this one as a family all day. It was a Sunday (August 17), and they are closed Monday, so it really felt like we got the tail end of the products before closing for a day, which is unfortunate if that's how they want to treat loyal customers, but giving them the stuff going bad before the weeks end. What is for certain is the food handling practices aren't up to par regardless if they want to utilize old stock before closing Monday, at least do your due diligence as a food handler to ensure it's safe to eat and not sitting in the danger zone for hours. Usually this place is really good so I'm a little perturbed by the lack of expertise/food handling standards I've come to expect.

You need to spend about a hundred dollars to actually feel full and satisfied so it can get pretty expensive for the tiny portions. My friend and I honestly had to go and buy some protein bars from Superstore to actually feel full after spending 90 bucks here, we actually had to eat 3 bars each to feel full after this restaurant. So I guess if you don't mind splurging on sushi for a day and you're gluten intolerant it's alright but it's definitely a money grab.

Apparently "hello" is an optional add-on here…read more We came in while the restaurant was clearly busy, which I completely understood. We sat down in what appeared to be the designated waiting area directly beside the bar/front counter and waited for around 10 minutes. During that time, there were numerous waitresses around, some of whom appeared to have enough downtime to at least acknowledge us. Instead, we mostly got occasional glances and what felt more like side eye than an actual welcome. Nobody said hello, nobody told us they'd be with us shortly, and nobody gave us any indication of how long we might be waiting. I'm not expecting to be treated like royalty. I'm expecting basic hospitality when I walk into a service-based business planning to spend money. Even a half-hearted "Hi! We're really busy, but we'll be with you soon" would have been perfectly fine. Warm and communicative service tends to make me want to tip generously. Feeling like my existence hasn't been acknowledged tends to have the opposite effect. Could I have walked up to the counter and taken the initiative myself? Of course. But after sitting right beside it for 10 minutes without anyone bothering to greet us, why would I chase someone down when there's another sushi restaurant about 500 metres away? So we left and went to Tobiko Sushi, and I'm genuinely glad we did. It's a quaint little restaurant with cute drinks, gorgeous food items and, most importantly, fantastic customer service. They were busy too, but our waitress still welcomed us warmly while she was helping another table. We only waited a couple of minutes to be seated, were promptly brought water, and genuinely felt like they were happy to have us there. So thank you, Sushi On, for inadvertently helping us discover our new favourite sushi restaurant across the street. I'll definitely be spreading the word about how fabulous Tobiko's customer service was. Being busy is understandable. Being too busy to acknowledge customers sitting directly beside your front counter is not.

We always judge Japanese restraints by the sushi rice and theirs is very good in texture, flavour and quality. Portions are regular meaning they are not huge but not skimpy. Take out and going to restraints has gone up so much, I'm always a little surprised by the bill but not at all in a bad way this time. Food was good, service quick even though they were really busy and the staff always pleasant. Great neighborhood restaurant. Try it, you'll like it!

We love Japanese cuisine so I decided to surprise the hubby with an omakase for his birthday in January. I have fond memories of coming here for hearty dinners after figure skating practices. Since I…read morestopped competitive skating senior year of high school, I'm not in North Van very often anymore. Last weekend, I happened to be in the area with my parents, so we went here for lunch. I was overjoyed that the friendly service and high quality food was as good as I remembered from years ago. Adding to the joyful mood were all the festive touches. The restaurant was decked out with a Christmas tree, garlands, etc., and the staff -- including those I spotted through the kitchen window -- were wearing cute, Christmas-y headbands. Being here just felt really familiar and cozy. Momiji has some great, affordable combos and standalone dishes. There's also plenty of nice things to splurge on. I was in the latter mood, so ordered a piece each of the uni and tobiko izura (fish roe and quail's egg) nigiri, as well as a spider roll (soft shell crab tempura with crab meat, avocado, and cucumber). The uni was really plump; the creaminess and brininess mixed with the rice and nori made for the perfect bite. I enjoyed the tobiko izura too, even though it was a lot messier to eat. That piece was topped with so much tobiko! The egg yolk added richness, making the nigiri even more palatable. From a presentation standpoint, this one is absolutely stunning. Spider rolls have been hit and miss for me, but Momiji's is always a hit. The tempura is so light and crispy, and the pieces aren't tiny either! They do a good job balancing the ratios of the other fillings too. And the teriyaki sauce brushed on top is just the right amount -- not so thick that it overwhelms your palate, nor too faint that you wonder what the point of that component is. The sweet, umami-forward notes of the teriyaki elevate every other ingredient in this roll. Perfection! Note to self: I'll be back, and soon. Thank you Momiji!
