Let's start with the name of this place - it's an issue. It does not do justice to the breadth of the menu that they offer. Fortunately, I had heard that they had a lot more to offer, but not every potential customer has that benefit. Also, I had to get past the fact that the last time I was in this space it was an Einstein Bagels. It looks totally different, but I used to spend a lot of time there and it was kind of weird to be back. On to the important stuff - the food! I juts stopped in on an unplanned visit while I was in town for something else and decided to bring home dinner for me and my wife. I kept my choices conservative and got stuff I knew she would like - fried dumplings, chicken fried rice and orange chicken. While my choices were not very adventurous, everything was really good! Classic Asian restaurant with great quality food and quick service. We enjoyed a couple of apps as well as entrees and everything was delicious. Started off with some sushi and Korean chicken. A good go-to spot that is not too pricey and doesn't have too many extra bells and whistles. The service was nice and fast, and they were really kind. Taking all things into consideration, knowing I'm coming in during the evening on Memorial Day. As soon as I walked in I noticed the absence of sound. Which could be good or bad depending on the person. No music was heard and minimal chatter. A calming place indeed. Only one server on deck and seems to be working dine out orders as well. Wonton soup - 8/10 ----homemade dumplings are always great to see. And the sesame oil was definitely present. Kung Pao Chicken - 10/10 ----lean chicken and easy to chew. The texture was on point along with the sauce. Cooked carrots, celery, and onions mixed in. I cant critique this. Grilled Chicken roll - 7/10 ---- very tasty, although dry. Might be a good idea to pair with spicy mayo. Could not find a teriyaki chicken roll. But if they had it, I would've ordered that instead. Overall - 4/5 ---- pretty good spot amongst even more boujee restaurants. Doesn't specialize in just rolls but is a mix of all Asian foods. Open until 9pm or so. Interior decor is nice. I smell some ammonia from their cleaning products or something as we walked to our table. Ordered the bomber, california and two ginger salads and a chicken bibimbap with a well done fried egg. $44.73 for our total. $1 for a small ramekin of sriracha here. The ginger house salad isn't too bad. Iceberg lettuce in the salads. They put kale in the bibimbap instead of spinach here. Spinach would be better for me. I had one gristly chicken piece in the couple of chicken bites for me. The bibimbap had a nice crunchy bottom to it. The bomber roll is good. Then again anything fried is good for the most part. The California roll wasn't bad. The bomber takes the forefront of the meal. Service was decent, not warm or friendly. The waitress gave me the hand once to tell me to wait for her to get something to write down the entree for us as well. The guy that brought us our bill was friendlier and warmer for sure. We were charged $1 for the small ramekin of sriracha. They didn't tell us when we ordered either, would be okay paying for it, so long as we are told ahead is all. read more

OK right up front let me say that this review relates to Sushi. The first word in the restaurant's name is sushi. So, perhaps foolishly, I expected them to specialize in sushi. Turns out many of the best reviews relate to the great Bi-Bim-Bap. Bibimbap is KOREAN, and a mixed bowl--NOTHING to do with either sushi or Japan. And then other people like General Tso Chicken. Again, Chinese (not Japan) and fried (not sushi). Naively, we ordered an unagi and avocado roll, a spicy tuna roll, and a tiger tempora roll. All were very average. None of the fish seemed particularly fresh, and the tempura tasted of old, over-used grease. The service was ok, but limited since we ordered takeout. Ambience--place looks cute outside and was half full. Just kinda "meh." So ratings--first 0 for the name. It should be called FUSION instead of Sushi and ASIAN instead of Japan. Sushi --3 very average. Everything else--meh. Will I rush back--NO. I suggest Adachi, which is about a block away, or Ronin in Royal Oak, or Noble Fish in Troy, all of which have far far better sushi. read more

This place has become my go-to sushi place. It's not flashy or pretentious, but just well priced, good quality food. Service at times can be on a slow side (perhaps understaffed) but always polite. Everything I tried was good- wanton soup, hot n sour sauce, Korean pancake. But my personal favorite is Torched salmon roll. We ordered the cucumber salad, chef's special roll, and sea salt caramel cake. 5/5 for the food, service, and speed! we got our salad and roll in under 7 min. the menu didn't mention that the salad came with crab, so that was a very pleasant surprise! the fish in the roll tasted v fresh. waitress was so kind and friendly. there was some confusion with the dessert - we ordered the caramel cake but we're given a lemon cake instead. she was very apologetic and said they had run out of the caramel so we could have the lemon cake on the house!! will def be back. read more

This new restaurant will be my place for everything sushi. I visited on a weekend with friends, and I love the laid-back, clean, and sleek decor. Service was quick, and the server was friendly and nice to talk to. Above all, food was the best. I got chicken bibimbap on a sizzling hot stone bowl, chicken somen noodle soup, and a couple of sushi rolls (bomber, fire cracker, salmon and avocado roll, and spicy salmon roll) as well as sashimi (tuna, yellowtail) that were fresh and filling. I did not find their sushi very good! I only ordered the shrimp tempura roll, something no sushi place should get wrong. The rolls are sliced very thin, and you receive six, so in actuality it's more like 3! No one saw us behind the line of people waiting for DoorDash pick up. And the ambiance is seriously hampered by a lot of people waiting in the middle of the restaurant. Please make people wait near the entrance, hire a hostess and a few more waiters if you want to remain full service dine in. Sometimes my stomach capacity surprises me. The fish are fresh and rice:filling ratio is just perfect. I'm tired of placed that has so much rice and stingy with their protein, so this is perfect. The tempura is so crunchy and it tastes amazing hot. The sweet potato tempura roll is BOMB. It is, I have to be honest, carbs on carbs, but come on, isn't it all the better reason to love it? It's SO good. This comes from a non-vegan who think veggie sushi is not real sushi. I devour the whole thing by myself and honestly I feel great afterwards and yes I would highly recommend this place! I was visiting friends and we ordered sushi Japan for lunch. I ordered quite a few things to be delivered through Grubhub on a whole everything was fine, but two dishes were horrible. The steam dumplings were literally raw and a beef dish I ordered had no sauce that's in the photo and the description and it was really dry so I complained to Grubhub. they reimbursed me for the two items out of probably 12 items that were ordered which I appreciated. 30 minutes later my phone is ringing and it's someone from sushi Japan yelling at me for complaining about their food. I was trying to explain what was wrong and the person that called me was incredibly rude so I told her I had nothing further to say they should be talking to Grubhub and hung up. They proceeded to repeatedly call me until I blocked their number. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care how good this restaurant might be for some people. I am never going back or recommending a place who treats customers so horribly. read more

Good sushi spot in Birmingham. Their sushi is always fresh and flavorful with standard and non-standard rolls available. Try the torched salmon, it's sweet but very flavorful. Their non sushi items are also very good specifically their Poke bowls, udon soup and bibimbap bowl. My only complaint is the atmosphere is lacking. If they changed the music and created a better vibe this would be the best sushi spot in the city. Their food is very good, but hard to take clients or have date night with my wife as the atmosphere is too lack luster and it shows with fewer diners at peek dinner hours than nearby lesser quality sushi spots. read more
