Had a girl's lunch with my sister & mom today and my sister suggested we go here. I really love the new shopping area it's located in & the decor is very hip and modern. They have many classic rolls ("old school" on their menu lol) including spicy tuna. We ended up getting the rockstar, the crazy & a custom chicken roll and fried calamari for an appetizer . Unfortunately, I didn't receive the correct order and was missing an extra scoop of protein which is an added $3-4 and the extra $2 sauces weren't even filled up and I received only 1 soy sauce packet. The food was still delicious but double check your food so you don't get jipped. read more

Update 2.1.19. Since my first couple of reviews, I have been back to Sushi Freak several times and have concluded that I LOOOOOOVE this place! The staff has been great about making their delicious sushi/burritos. I commend the owner, MICHAEL, for ensuring each customer has a great experience and will listen to suggestions, questions and concerns. I order a lot for pick up so I can eat my sushi burrito at work. The staff always accommodates for extra sauces and pay attention to the small details requested. If there is an issue, please tell them, they will be sure to fix it! This place was made for me! Sushi rolls, poke bowls, sushi BURRITO?! Yes please! The customer service is spot on and they were so nice when explaining how to order off the menu. They were quick to suggest a more budget friendly meal for my 3-year-old when I didn't realize there were more options on the back of the menu and was going to order my kid an adult portion. And he loved his dish! I got the Dr. Eel Good burrito and it was delicious! Freshly rolled and neatly wrapped. We got our meals quickly and sat inside to eat. The place was very clean, chopsticks at the table to use, and more than enough seating. Can't wait to go back for Update: I had to change my stars. After 3 visit, almost 3 weeks in a row; their slow assembly line has not improved and noticed employees do not have good supervision - no one to lead and direct. There are a lot of standing around and questioning of who is doing what. Several people waiting in line left due to waiting for more than 20+ minutes. I had to repeat my orders at least 3x because the employee simply forgot everything I ordered. He was very apologetic. Maybe have a computer system up front to place orders and printed out so everyone knows what is being ordered? There needs to be a better set up because right now it's seems like they are falling through the cracks. Dirty towels on the assembly line, no switching gloves when moving from food station to the sink and touching/making Sushi with same dirty gloves. What an amazing place! To start off, AVOCADO ISN'T EXTRA!! If you order a poke bowl, a sushi burrito or just a regular roll they won't charge you extra for it. The ingredients are super fresh, and super tasty. The service is great! And the place is super clean. Did i mention that it is also cheaper than most sushi/ poke places in El Paso including Pokeworks? I 100% recommend coming to this place. read more

First time I seem to enjoy better than the last two or three visits. Seems the staff are not that happy? You get the basics, but a little more enthusiasm wouldn't be missed? The concept is great, but for the price, it's ok. I'll be back cause it's "sushi for beginners" and I do like the coconut shrimp sushirito, but please get some decent beverages and not all the stuff teens in Asia drink. And maybe run a contest for the ambassador who gets the most laughs from guests or something? read more

If you happen to read my other reviews you will know I'm a bit of a sushi snob. That being said, let's get into this review. This was my first visit to Sushi Freak, and will probably be the last. As a first time customer I hadn't seen how they operated before, so I checked out the menu, then went to the order counter. So far so good. At the order counter, you can mostly see the ingredients available but there isn't a menu behind the the folks making your food for you to see. And if you have the memory of an elephant that's fine, but most of us forget were our head is attached. One of the employees behind the counter gave me a bit of an attitude about not knowing what I was ordering. I ordered a create your own Sushi Burrito stuffed with tofu and avocado. the meager options left to add to it weren't appealing to me (mixed green, cucumber, New Mexico chili, and an assortment of other stuff typically found in salad, but not necessarily in sushi). I received eel sauce with my burrito. Overall, my burrito was great, I do like plain simple things, so no complaints for me on the lack of options to add to my burrito (like shelled edamame or seaweed). I also ordered a create your own Sushi Bowl for my wife, and this is where it shows the lack of options was detrimental to the overall experience. Unlike me, my wife likes stuff on her food. I ordered tofu and avocado for her as well, then attempted to add as much stuff as possible that she would like, and that typically goes on sushi... so the banana peppers (wtf!), tangerines, bean sprouts, and jalapeños were out, but did add mixed greens, New Mexico chili, and cucumbers to hers. I got her the mango sauce and the spicy mayo. The wife said she was happy with the selection when I brought it back to her, but that was before she started eating it. Then she spent the rest of the meal adding whatever flavorful items she could find from the fridge, until she finally drowned it in soy sauce to get some flavor in there. Needless to say now, she did not like her plain bowl. Overall, it was a Mexicanized/El Pasocanized version of sushi. And if that's your thing, then you will love Sushi Freak. Also, keep in mind I didn't order any of the not create your own menu items, so that might be a completely and better experience. But for the same price, I'll happily drive to Poke Works for their massive selection of things to add to your creations. read more

First off! This place is fun and marketed so very well. I love the images on the wall. If you are a die hard sushi person. I would go with poke or the sushi burritos. That seemed liked the best way to go. I went with sushi. And thus my mediocre experience. My review is on the sushi and sushi experience as comparing to my absolute favorite sit down and order with a server sushi spot. Price difference 34.00 as sushi freak 46.00 includes tip at Koze. Price difference in my opinion staying with Koze for sushi. You order at a counter like a subway. You can have it your own way for 4.00 but if you upgrade to any decent protein like spicy tuna, salmon, shrimp tempura. It is an extra 3.00 you get 2 items extra 50 cents. Crunch on top 1.00. What is missing is the craft, creation, and cleanliness of a well trained sushi chef. The young adults at the counter were friendly, and encouraging of the choices. They seemed well-trained on customer service but did not have the culinary skills of a tenured sushi chef. The sushi rolls are smaller than what you would normally get. You do not get the complimentary miso and salad. You don't get served. What is really gross is they make the sushi on a the counter then wipe down the counter with the same dirty rag, again and again. At Subway at least they put a paper down before the start marking the next sandwich. I am super particular on raw fish and it didn't seemed to be handled well. The rolls were poorly wrapped and cut. The taste was okay. Fish was fresh. Would I go back yes but not for sushi Poke nachos looked yummy sushi burritos looked yummy, poke bowl is the way to go here read more

So the kiddo had already been here before and said this was her favorite sushi spot. Lol they are all her favorite. We walked in and the first thing u see are 2 big menus one for a Poke bowl the other for rolls and sushi "burritos". I'm not a sushi freak lol get it? But I love Poke. Yes i know same thing but no not really. U pass the menus and are greeted by a very friendly happy staff. But.... Everything is in little tubs with white covers; not clear but white and by now I'm half way forgetting what I had planned in my mind for my bowl. They'll ask what else u want but having a line in back u don't want them to name everything and u just kinda guess at what you've had before. The helpful guy did give some suggestions which when i tasted my creation was pretty darn good. So kiddo got a California roll rolled in panko and my bowl had spring greens and rice (warm which I loved!) Fried shrimp tempura chopped up (fried up when u ask for it) krab mix a very generous size, chopped green onions, cubed cream cheese (I know right?!) Cucumbers, and avocado with sweet eel sauce. So so good. I usually get fried crunchy onions but I don't know if they had any. It was good I would've preferred to be able to see what was in the containers as I was picking my veggies and the drinks are a bit pricey but I can see why this is one of the kiddos favorite spots. Self proclaimed sushi freak here and I recommend this place! I had the sushi burrito with salmon and it was everything I wanted for the price. Fresh ingredients no doubt and made quickly! The concept of this restaurant is super neat. It's a pretty hip and modern place that would definitely deserve 5 stars if the food wasn't so average. I feel like what we ordered wasn't really worth what we paid. I've had better sushi and teriyaki chicken at hole in the wall restaurants that was way cheaper. You can tell that the owner put a lot of thought into the decor of this place. From the neat logo on the tables to the cute to go cups they had, this place is definitely well decorated and really thought through. It has a calming and welcoming atmosphere. A great place if you're looking to take someone to have a nice conversation. I ordered the teriyaki combo which included white rice, chicken, an egg roll and a cucumber salad. The chicken tasted like it came out of a frozen bag. Like the Tyson frozen chicken that they sell in the frozen section. Then it just looks like the just put teriyaki sauce on top. To be honest it wasn't that great. I also had the miso soup which lacked flavor and was pretty bland. My husband had the dragon roll which he said tasted pretty decent but to me it tasted like a California roll with eel on top, to me it was just alright, nothing that special. I did notice that they had the sushi burrito, which it seems is what they're famous for, and Poke bowls so maybe in the near future we'll come back to try them. read more

Nowhere on their website did they say card only... I placed an order over the phone through out the call the associate never mentions card one they say 30 minutes. I arrive to pick up my order about 25 minutes only to be denied my order because they are only taking card.... seriously make a better effort to communicate that when people place orders. read more

Decided to give Sushi Freak a try. Walked into the establishment, very nice dining area but opted to-go. Poké nachos were bomb af but the interaction with the employees was a weird one. When I asked if I could add onto my order, the employee told me it would cost extra in a passive aggressive manner, one employee kept awkwardly staring and assumed I was with the person behind me and overall their faces were very expressive in a way that you could tell what they were feeling. I felt like eating some sushi but did not want to drive around Mesa street due to the Terrible traffic so I decided to travel farther away and stumbled upon this place. It's located in the newly built area on N. Desert blvd. It looks like I came during a not so busy time and ordered the poke nachos and spicy tuna roll to go. It didn't take much time for them to prep it as they have machines to evenly distribute the rice on the seaweed. I glanced around and noticed they mostly have machines to do the prep work or to actually dispense your food, like a miso soup dispenser which is pretty interesting. The price is standard compared to most sushi places around $6-$7 for a standard roll and higher for their specialty ones. They fixed the food pretty quickly and I left back to work to eat. I opened up the poke nachos which looked really good but they do drench a lot of sauce on there. There was a mix of tuna, salmon, crab mix and the unfortunate part is that the salmon actually tasted bad and as I took a bite, it tasted awfully fishy like it had gone bad. The texture was very mushy compared to regular salmon sashimi and I looked at a piece and it was actually discolored. The tuna was ok, it didn't have any bad taste but to it. So in terms of fish quality it's bad depending on the day. I think they would be able to do really well if they have better quality fish. I think the poke nachos is a great idea! read more
