Finally ventured in here. Came here with the Queen, son, youngest daughter. Ordered the custom made poke bowl with spicy tuna, daughter ordered the California roll with miso soup, son ordered a poke bowl with teriyaki chicken while the wife ordered some rolls. Not your traditional sushi ya which is cool. Wayyyyyy better in terms of flavor. At least their miso soup has that umami taste. They actually served tempura sauce with their tempura unlike Sunny's. Guess it originated from Linda Vista, San Diego, CA. One of my stomping grounds as a sushi chef out there. Good to see SD sushi influence movin out this way. Will come again. I stopped in for a quick bite to eat and ended up leaving after waiting in line for 10 minutes. There was only one person in line ahead of me but the staff were preparing multiple items for what I assumed were for phone in and online orders. The staff were also moving really slow. Sushi Freak is the place to go to satisfy your poke craving in El Paso. We originally chose Sushi Freak because of the super fair prices - $5.50 to start for a poke bowl and $3 for each protein. I ordered a poke bowl with salmon (sake) and started with rice. 4 fillings are included with this, and I chose the cucumber, avocado, cream cheese, & green onion. I added the tempura crunch as a $1 topping. Lastly, for the 2 sauces included, I chose spicy mayo & poke sauce. The quality of the salmon (sake) itself was the best I've tasted in El Paso so far. I really appreciate how much salmon was included in the bowl. Both sauces & the tempura crunch also went super well with this order. The only thing I might change next time is to ask for 1/2 the amount of cream cheese or choose another topping - they include a ton of cream cheese. What I ended up doing was giving 1/2 of it to my boyfriend for him to add to his bowl, and it worked out really well. My boyfriend ordered a poke bowl with spicy tuna & really enjoyed it too! Our friends both don't like sushi, so one of them chose teriyaki chicken and the other chose shrimp. It's awesome how they have non-sushi options here as well. Staff (young HS or college aged kids) not too friendly, not amenable to accommodating dietary request (subbing cucumber for rice/mixed greens). Portion was good though, two big scoops of protein. Freshly cut avocado slices in front of you. Sauce selection could be better, as there were a little more than a handful of common options. Clean sit down area if you choose to eat here. Overall, I'd probs would not choose to be back, as there are many options around the area. Poke Bar on Zaragoza is a clear superior option. read more

Wanting sushi for lunch, I stopped in Sushi Freak without researching it beforehand and I was very pleasantly surprised. The wait was short, staff was polite, and the Fistbump sushi burrito was fresh and tasted wonderful. My opinion is that the $15 I paid for this tuna and shrimp stuffed burrito was much more value for my money than the skimpily filled sushi rolls I am accustomed to purchasing for the same amount of money. The dipping sauce was yummy as well. I will eat from Sushi Freak again. I have been to this place quite a few times. The staff is always very friendly and helpful and the place is almost always spotless. I have usually stuck with the poke bowls and if I had, I would have given 5 stars. The poke bowls are amazing. This time, I decided to try some rolls and the teriyaki chicken. I had the Yellow Dragon Roll with added spicy mayo and the spicy tuna roll. The Yellow Dragon was good, but the spicy mayo they used tasted old. The spicy tuna roll was standard, but very good. Now on to the teriyaki chicken. The chicken itself was tender and moist, but very flavorless and kind of pale looking. They added a very weak and watery teriyaki sauce which helped only slightly (see photo). I will stick with the poke bowls and am sure I will be satisfied with my future visits. read more

Extremely glad we found this place and I couldn't believe that there wasn't a line around the entire plaza. Simple menu including "Old School Rolls" and sushi burritos. Great concept, fresh sushi fast. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes with 2 rolls and a burrito all to go. The Yellow Dragon was spot on, yellow tail made a bit spicy by a sauce of some sort. The spicy tuna roll that I also had was super badass. The "Dr Eel Good" burrito topped off my evening meal. You can taste the fresh ingredients in each bite. The staff was helpful as a group could've been. The place has lots of indoor seating and some tables outside as well. Cool spot, I am certain I will go back . Maybe tomorrow. read more

New place so first time trying it. They have several choices as well as Pokē bowls (I'm not crazy about raw fish). They do offer sushi burritos!!! I tried it and it was pretty good! Good size, good amount of ingredients. We also tried the Sumo roll in which is pretty big as well as Sunny Cali- my wife liked it. She also tried an egg roll, which was different- she liked it. We are going back to try other stuff. The staff is nice. The drink choices are unique- they have flavored sodas and foreign drinks.. we went safe with water but want to try the teas. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was that the seaweed sheet is very hard to bite off. When I went to bite half of my sumo roll, it would fall apart because when I tried to bite it, the seaweed sheet would come altogether. read more

First time here and the sushi was alright. Not the best. Albertsons sushi beats this sushi for sure. One girl slapped the wasabi on to the top of my lid. The teriyaki chicken is literally grilled chicken fajita from Walmart. Over priced for it to be cheaper to just reheat and pour teriyaki mix on top. The rice was left out? The rice was crunchy and hard. They had no lids for the teriyaki bowl and one girl said I can't make that for you right now because we have no lids. Will not recommended the girls serving the food were very rude as if they hated their job and didn't want to be there. Pretty sweet new sushi spot! Its the perfect addition to the West Towne Marketplace which is a growing community in itself! I think its rad too that this is the 4th location to ever open! It started in CA and migrated to ABQ and now here in good ole El Paso! Super exciting. The setting of the restaurant is a build your own sushi, assembly line style. So you can watch your sushi being made right in front of you. It was a lil busy with too many employees working on the same station and almost too chaotic. Im not sure if they were trying to train people at the same time but like every new establishment, there are kinks to work out. As for the food, it was pretty good too overall. I think what really sealed the deal for me was their availability of some calamari as a side order. Those puppies were good! and only $5! Not a bad price for a good amount of squid! As for the sushi, it was good but not my favoritest. The eel sauce was a lil too bitter. The size was very generous for only $10 so i was pretty happy about that overall. Miso soup was also pretty good. I love it when there are good chunks of tofu in it which made it worth its $2 cup size. I've been to Sushi Freak three times now and am very impressed with both the food and the service. The service is friendly and efficient, even though most of the people are still learning since it just opened. I expect that food prep time will come down some as the employees get more experience. It should be noted, however, that they are hand making this high quality food for you and takes a few minutes to do right, so don't expect it to be ready before you pay. There are plenty of tables inside this location, unlike some of the other dining establishments in the shopping center, and the decor is very nice. The food that I have tried has been great. I especially love the nachos that they make with wonton chips. It's not a meal but great to split as a side. The Rockstar roll is fantastic and the burritos I've had have been very good. I'm personally not crazy about the New Mexico roll, but that's just me. While you are there make sure you get a fountain drink and try all the different flavors. It's not Coke or Pepsi, I forget the brand name, but they are great! They do tend to be a bit foamy out of the fountain so it takes a min or two to fill your cup once you have made your selection, but it's worth the effort to me. I'm not much of a Diet Soda drinker, but I thought this brands diet cola was very good. I highly recommend that you try this place. Just remember that is not fast food and takes a couple more minutes than McDonalds but the food quality is top notch. read more

The concept is novel. Get rolls done fast your way, like Subway. On one of its windows are words something akin to, "It takes years to master making sushi so borrow one of ours.". Well, the problem with this statement, is it's true. It does take years and the taste in these quick to make rolls shows. They're just ok. I tried the miso soup also as I've never seen a machine that's dedicated to just making miso soup. It's not very good. I suspect the sushi burrito here are probably pretty awesome. A sushi burrito is totally different from a sushi roll. So I'll come back to try a burrito. But I won't ever order a roll here-it's arguably just not real sushi. read more

New age build your own sushi with Tokidoki flair..... It was a toss up between Pieology or this place on the Westside, since it was plus or minus a few degrees of the sun today, i opted to give this place a try. Interesting concept, and i went for a "Build your own Poke Bowl" simple, to the point, rice, protein add on and some sauce; my first impression was theres not a lot to choosed from, however it does have the necessities. Bowl and a soda $17 bucks, not that bad, and the protein was a decent amount. I want to point out the Spicy Tuna i had in my bowl was one of THE BEST i have ever had, it has an amazing texture even being so fine, and the Hamachi was fresh, not a bit slimy or given off a funny smell. However....... this is where it completely killed it for me, the bed of rice was piping hot... and it wasn't sushi rice. Its great to have fresh cool fish but it kills the favor and semi-cooks the fish when you have piping hot rice as a foundation. Thats why sushi restaurants make and use Sushi-Rice so it doesn't disturb the flavor or the temperature of the nigiri or the roll, and compliments it. It seriously was a hard toss up between a 3 and 4 star, it was so good but lukewarm fish is just not appetizing. read more
