The prices were so affordable and the food portions were big. The fish came in big pieces and were very fresh. The bathroom reads clean and smelled nice. Here's everything we got: - Tuna Belly - Big pieces and large portion. Fresh tasting. Fried garlic slices and charred and crispy cabbage in a ponzu sauce. The sushi helped with the strong garlic taste. Everything together was delicious. - Gyoza - pan fried on one side... Flavorful. Sauce was good, not overwhelmingly soy sauce - Dynamite - Liquidy buttery spicy mayo. It is spicy for me but also good. Big portion. Scallops are the tiny ones though. - Chef's Choice Sashimi - 20 pieces for $50. Big long pieces. Fresh. The red snapper was sweet. - Lobster Roll - Big portions. Topped with the same spicy mayo from the dynamite. Actual big pieces of lobster instead of tiny ones that usually come in these rolls. - Aki Passion drink - Sweet but not too sweet. Hint of tartness. I was introduced to this restaurant and have NOT stopped coming back since. I was never a raw sushi girl, but when introduced all they ate was Nigiri...scary when that's never been your MO. However, the salmon belly nigiri is incredible, changed my life in fact lol. I CRAVE this salmon belly and make it a self date night. I typically order the salmon belly nigiri, tuna or tuna belly nigiri (MP-make sure you check) and call it a day. Tonight, I ordered salmon belly sashimi comes with 5pcs vs the 2 pc Nigiri and order some sushi rice and ate to my liking. I also had the tuna and was beautiful as well. Tuna was nice and firm, great taste and so fresh. Salmon belly is for those whom love more fatty content than normal and it gives a buttery texture. No need for additional sauces. I'm a sauce gal and no need for anything but they do pair the dishes with ginger, wasabi, and what I believe to be shaved radishes (could be wrong). This is all I've tried, but I've come back multiple times just for this trust me order. I cannot speak to any of the other dishes, but I can imagine they are just spectacular. Miso soup they start you off is always hot, green onions are thin with a punch and tofu bites are present. 5 star quality fresh fish is let down 2 stars when it comes to being a restaurant review by: 1) Service. Many menu items that should take hardly any time at all, take forever and are not noted as such on the menu. They're brought out one by one when they are ready instead of all together. Well this isn't normally too big a problem but one member of our party had to wait while the rest of us ate our orders in the time it would have taken two times over to eat and order them before they even received their order - and their order was nothing special that would take a long time. Similar silly delay goes for the most basic refills: of rice or tea. For example for tea instead of adding more hot water in - the dregs were overly strong - instead they have to replace the whole thing. That is, if they even bring it the first time you ask, usually twice it was the norm 2) Prices - yes this is El Paso and no there's not exactly fishing nearby so fish likely must be flown in. But really 45 something dollars for two pieces of uni? Service was wonderful, indoor and outdoor seating had great vibes with comfortable chairs and cocktails were delicious! Overall, the food was amazing and delicious! However, the service was not up to par. We experienced quite a bit of waiting for our waitress to check on us, refill our water, and bring our checks. On top of that, our waitress, Alexa, added a 20% gratuity to each of our checks, which was disappointing given the lack of attentiveness and service we received. It seemed as though she may have been new to the service industry, which I can certainly understand and have patience with. However, she was continuously in the back & her coworkers repeatedly had to remind or guide her to come back to our table and check on us. I truly enjoyed the food, but unfortunately, the service took away from the overall dining experience. The atmosphere was good and the music was not too loud. They updated the decor and it looks much better. For some reason, they had to cancel the takeout orders because they were backed up in the kitchen, consequently, our order took a substantial amount of time to come out. We had to take one of the orders to go because it took that long to get out of the kitchen. Our waitress did a great job at trying to update us on delays from the kitchen. I had been interested in trying this restaurant so in early May I had lunch there. I won't return. It was expensive and not worth it. I wish I had taken a picture of the cucumber pinwheel roll. $25 for cucumber arranged on sharp bamboo skewers like a pinwheel with tiny pieces of sushi in the center. Trying to eat it was unpleasant. So I had to take it off the skewers which revealed the tiny bits of sushi, which lacked flavor. The ponzu sauce was the best part of the meal. A gentleman came over to check on my experience and I told him how disappointed I was and asked if they serve this often? Had he eaten this? Would he enjoy it? He didn't know what to say. Absolutely terrible service at Aki Sushi. We waited about an hour to be seated, which was understandable because the restaurant was clearly busy. Once we were finally seated, though, things only got worse. We sat in the corner for another 20 minutes before we finally had to flag down a waiter ourselves. She took our drink orders, and because we had already been waiting so long, we went ahead and placed our entire food order. After another 40 minutes, we still had not received anything. We brought it to their attention, only to be told that there were six orders ahead of ours. The frustrating part was that we had already watched multiple people who arrived after us get their food and eat while we were still waiting. The waiter acted like it wasn't her fault and basically treated it like it wasn't her problem. At that point, we decided to cancel our order and leave. I understand that restaurants get busy, but the lack of communication, organization, and basic customer service was ridiculous. Waiting is one thing; being completely ignored and then getting an attitude when you ask about your order is another. One star. The service was awful, and they seriously need to improve how they handle their customers and orders. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place! I stumbled across their restaurant looking through Yelp. Come to find out they are hands down the best sushi spot in town. The service is incredible and we are always treated SO well! I love the ambiance, very clean and comfortable. Mother in law took me to lunch today at AKI Sushi and I finally was able to get the Uni! It was a splurge but so fresh and sweet and delicious. The lunch box special is the way to go which @reika_pug recommended. It came with teriyaki chicken which was ok, the white chicken was a bit dry and the sauce was thin. The sashimi (tuna and salmon) was sooo good and fresh and they give you huge chunks, so worth the price and I love eating it with the shredded daikon (radish). The tempura was light and not greasy with a variety of vegetables and shrimp and came with a dipping sauce. We had miso soup and my mother in law had the crunch roll and she was fine with the raw tuna even though the roll was flash fried. My friend Seiichi who went with me to the last infamous sushi spot messaged me tonight and told me they went as well and was also pleased with their experience. The sushi is just so good and the service nice and prompt. I still say this is the freshest and best presented sushi in El Paso. I decided to check this place out since I had been eyeballing it for some time. It is up the street from Saint Matthews Church and is a great dinner spot. You are warmly greeted by all the employees and chefs when you walk in. I was seated immediately and had iced green tea in front of me in seconds. I ordered some yellow tail and yellow tail belly nigiri and I could taste the difference- the belly was softer and more delicious. I also ordered the sunset roll without the jalapeños. For me, it was spicy enough with the spicy crab meat- and then tempura fried to perfect crispness. Do not ask me what possessed me to order the steak and chicken with broccoli- I must have thought the meat would be sliced and seared but instead it was all cubes- not my favorite presentation. The meat was cooked perfectly but something about the cube shapes was not appetizing. I took home half the roll and almost all of the steak and chicken (lunches this week) and now to talk about the dessert. So, I got the green tea tempura ice cream. It was a big ball of frozen ice cream wrapped in Angel food cake and fried. I could do without the Angel food cake and just enjoy the ice cream at a nice room temperature so it is almost soft and easy to eat with a spoon. Then came the bill- I have to say this was the most I ever spent out by myself but I have about three meals in the fridge. The waiter was most excellent and friendly and all the staff covered for each other- I love to see team work in action. Overall the food was good. They cancelled my order and when I called to confirm the cancellation they said they cancelled it because they are getting a lot of to go orders? I understand, but push it back guys. This visit was before covid so it may not accurately reflect the current restaurant climate. I heard from a friend that Aki sushi had some of the freshest fish in town, but I did not have the chance to try any of their fish because it was quite expensive. The menu is on the expensive side, but I understand that this may be due to the fact that El Paso isn't surrounded by big bodies of water. I ordered the volcano roll and it was definitely more expensive for what I wanted to pay given the amount of food I got. With tip and tax, it easily came out to $20 for something I normally could have gotten in SoCal for like $15-$16 and would have been a bigger size. Despite the price, I will say that it was yummy. Where they fell short was in the amount of scallops that was on top (quite little) and the rolls themselves were small compared to sushi restaurants on the coast. Very clean inside and the hostess and servers were attentive. First off I love the Substation the trendy not typical El Paso Strip mall that this location is set in. It has such a fun eclectic mix of shopping, instagram worthy pic taking and eating. We ate and walked around after it was an awesome Sunday afternoon. Note on Sunday a lot of the shopping closes early or is closed. Aki is a beautiful designed sushi place. Murals on the wall. Lots of flexible seating. I would not be afraid to bring big parties as right now they could accommodate. They serve a few beers, wine and lots of different sake. Everyone was very friendly and seemed super happy to work there from the sushi chefs to the managers. The girl servers are dressed a little different than the norm but not distasteful. Our service was great. They were very attentive. The food we had the Cancun Jalapeños were fried jalapeños with the white veins cut out so they don't kill your taste buds with a yummy sauce on top. I had to ask for more sauce. We also had the short ribs they were good. I was expecting something different. We ordered two rolls the Hot Crunchy roll presentation was beautiful had neat looking red flakes. But it was not my favorite. I was expecting spicy. NOW! the Lobster roll was super super yummy. It was so fresh with lots of lobster. Can' wait to go back and try other rolls. A lot of people were getting the full dinner options all of them coming out of the kitchen looked really good. I ate at Aki about 2 months ago & didn't get a chance to write a review until now. I've been wanting to try this place for a while & stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The place looked pretty new & clean & had a nice vibe. They've got a good variety of options on the menu which you don't really see to often in El Paso for a sushi restaurant. I ordered the 12 piece nigiri sushi dinner. I hate it when sushi pieces are skimpy and sinewy & hard to bite into, but this was definitely not the case here. The sushi tasted delicious and fresh, and the pieces were tender & easy to tear into & chew. I was also given a complimentary miso soup before my order came out and a half sliced orange dessert fruit afterwards. This place is well-maintained and the service is fantastic as the server was friendly & stopped by periodically to see how I was doing. I would have like to tried out the japanese taiyaki dessert (fish ice cream) & will probably do so next time. I only know of 1 other place in town that offers this & am not sure it's still in business after Covid because I tried to find it afterwards & couldn't and tried something else that was unsatisfying. The server was quite attentive and discreet when needed, making the dinning experience very pleasant. The food itself was delicious. The appetizer we ordered was the fried softshell crab. Though pricey, the flavor was good enough to make me forget about it's cost. The fish from the chirashi bowl was fresh, especially the salmon which was melt in the mouth. Hands down the highest quality sushi in town. I'll be honest, ELP is not amazing for Asian cuisine, usually it's hands down bad. We've lived here for 3 years now and had given up on sushi. Waited to try this place a second time, all I can say is that I wish I had found this place sooner. This place has the freshest fish. They get multiple air deliveries from Japan every week, and it shows. Not LA or restaurant depot, but Japan. Other places in town it's very obvious it's frozen stuff from Restaurant depot. The fish is also prepared and cut really well, and paired with great sushi rice. Like many reviews already state, this is the place to go if you want fresh sushi, especially nigiri or sashimi. We had the live Japanese scallops today along with the sashimi platter and tuna belly and it was incredible. I've been to Japan 5+ times, tried as many highly rated places around major cities and all I can say is that Aki Sushi is batting at a level I would never expect in El Paso.
