Disappointing dining experience today! We ordered the dinner for two for $42 and they asked us if we would like filet, we agreed however he did not tell us how much of an up charge there would be. I expected some difference in price, but we ended up being charged $18 extra (on top of what we were already paying for steak)! This seemed outrageous to me. if you look at the prices on their menu, the difference between regular steak and filet it's usually between $6-7 more, but for a combo dish where you're not getting a full portion of steak for you to be charged $18 more than you're already paying for steak to begin with is really ridiculous. Then on top of that we were there with friends...other couples and we all ordered separately. However they combined us all together and added a group gratuity at 18% so we were forced to tip on an up charge of an extra $18 which then made us pay quite a bit more tip than we probably typically would have for the service that we received that day. We also were not served or offered any sauce. The dishes for the sauce sat there the whole time, and we were never given any. When checking out the server wouldn't show me the actual Lind item bill, just the total. When I asked to see it (because the total was clearly much higher than I expected) he wouldn't give it to me and said all he could do was give me the receipt after I paid which would show everything. The second I sat down and tasted the delicious hibachi style seafood and eloquently cooked fried rice with legitimate white sauce to boot, I was all set to grant this place 4 stars overall. And then...something unthinkable happened...which I shall commence to cover in meticulous fashion. So as mentioned in my previous review of Clicks Billiards, this place is conveniently located in literal walking distance next to the aforementioned establishment. That's how we happened by this place. I've been searching for good hibachi places in the El Paso area for several months now and it still amazes me that this one has never come up on my radar. But no matter. The way it's tucked inside a factory outlet setting of sorts would almost have you believing it's one of those mom 'n pop hole-in-the-wall restaurants. The decorum almost says as much. That doesn't stop them from turning out a decent product, for the most part.. As with all hibachi or teppanyaki meals, we start off with our traditional soup and salad. This soup was phenomenal! Like, seriously. It packed a slight spicy kick to it, but not overwhelmingly so. I found the zucchini floating inside my soup to be rather out of place, but it didn't ruin the overall flavor of the soup for me or anything like that. And don't ask me about the salad, because I never eat those things at these types of restaurants (I covered this in a previous hibachi review). Let's talk main courses for a bit: the wife got filet, lobster, scallops and shrimp; whilst I got lobster and shrimp. First of all, my dish was excellent. I was seriously surprised here. This little place can sear shrimp and lobster perfectly with just the right amount of lemon juice, butter and soy sauce. I highly recommend trying this with a touch of white sauce. Trust me. It will change your life if you've never tried it before. The wife liked most of her meal, with the exception of the scallops (since she never eats them anyway, so I ate them for her instead) and the filet. *sigh*... This...is where Shogun missed the opportunity to earn a 4th star from yours truly and committed the ultimate [as the French would say] faux pas of all faux pas in protein prepping history. Right off the bat, the wife immediately noticed her steak tasted extremely sour. So much so that she spit out her first piece of steak. She wanted me to taste one as well. But honestly, you couldn't PAY me enough to sample something she already confirmed tasted sour beyond reason. And there was something else odd about this beef. As the chef was placing it on the grill, I noticed that it looked less reddish and more brownish than I'm used to seeing. At the time, I sort of shook it off and thought maybe the dim lighting was playing tricks on my eyes. Sadly, I should have listened to my gut instincts in this case. I know what fresh steak should look and smell like. After the wife took that first bite, we both knew without a doubt...this steak was spoiled, expired beyond recognition, and never EVER should have made it beyond the pass. Clearly, no one was doing adequate quality control on their produce here and whoever claimed they DID....needs to be fired immediately. Because they could have killed someone. It's a real shame, too. Because everything else about this place was basically awesome. And we WILL return. But when a chef or...whoever...serves up a piece of beef that's clearly expired and should have been thrown in the trash weeks ago, that's also clearly a sign that brings serious doubt this restaurant would pass a random health inspection of their kitchen, outright. I've never ran a restaurant before, but this is just a lay opinion based on common sense and watching numerous episodes of "Kitchen Nightmares". Oh, and if you're wondering how we were compensated for the foul steak, after the wife voiced her disdain for the fermented cattle, the chef quickly re-fired a NY strip for her. It smelled and tasted exactly like a steak should (I confirmed this one personally). So all in all...if it weren't for him reacting so quickly to remedy the previous situation, this rating could have been much worse. For now, I'll just chalk it up to someone in charge of the kitchen failing to do their job. It only makes me wonder who the head chef is and if he or she has any quality control standards. At any rate, said head chef should return to the culinary arts college ASAP! A word to the not-so wise: cold beef that lacks a reddish color = bad meat. End of story. Overall: until further notice or experience proves us wrong, don't order the filet from Shogun. Their seafood is spectacular though. I'd give THAT....a 9 out of 10. Decent place to eat teppanyaki in town. I recommend you to go during lunch time. Every day they have a different lunch special for about $8. For the amount of the meal, it's very cheap compare to other teppanyaki places. The teppanyaki chef is very nice and friendly. Other than teppanyaki menu they serve sushi. It's a little expensive so if you don't know what kind you will like, I recommend you go get chef's special. It comes with 5 different sushi and 6 rolls. First and foremost, entering the restaurant gave me an eye sore. I was astonished at the gross 80s carpeting and furniture throughout the restaurant and how HIGHLY dirty it was and the poor fish tank looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a few months. It's unfortunate because the restaurant also had a slight foul smell lingering around. As I looked over the menu to order drinks we decided to order sushi... ::: Now for the HIGH prices on the menu you would think this restaurant was well maintained... but that was a FAIL on their part. We received our drinks and while ordering sushi my family decided this wasn't a place to hangout for dinner so we were nice and ordered 2 sushi plates and finish off our drinks. Since we were starving and wanted to go someplace else we changed our sushi plate QUICKLY with our waitress and the chef/ manager seemed angry and gave me an angry kinda look. I didn't need to explain myself, but I told him that we were short on time and had to leave.... he was angry and started to raise his voice not letting me speak until I finally yelled out "ALL I WANT IS THE POPULAR SUSHI PLATE!!! THATS ALL" (that's literally the name of the sushi plate) ... anyways, I could tell he was extremely heated!! Lol Our sweet waitress was super nice to us... she said our sushi came with free miso soup ... but a few minutes later after the altercation with the owner/ sushi chef she came back and told us we were being charged for our soup now since we only decided to order ONE (15.95) sushi plate. Then she was yelled at from across the dining room from the female Asian manager "NEVER MIND" to disregard us from being charged for our soup that we didn't even want in the first place. The owners were CLEARLY talking sh!t about us in Japanese, but I could care less!! THIS PLACE and its OWNERS ARE RIDICULOUSLY CRAZY!!! So now after the heated tension was finally over and we finished our drinks ... I got the check and the waitress ended up charging me for the WRONG most expensive drink on the menu then what I had originally ordered. She confessed, but failed to help to assist in correcting her mistake. I didn't want her to get in trouble with the crazy owners so I let it slide. We even made sure to leave her a tip. To be honest ... 1 bud light and 2 mix drinks w/ one sushi plate all came out to $40. INSANE right??!!! I wished them a Happy New Year and my family and I made our way out as soon as possible. My family and I will NEVER come back to this place again!! I'm hoping within time this restaurant gets remodeled and sets reasonable prices because as of right now.... this place is BUNK!!! We have tried two of the three Japanese steakhouses in El Paso and decided to try this one, since we really liked the Shogun's in a different city we lived in. As it's Valentine's Day we expected a wait to be seated but that wasn't as long, drink orders were taken right away, and food order wasn't far behind it; But the time it took to get the salads after the soups was quite a while, and then the time before the chef came out and start cooking was close to an hour. We asked for YumYum sauce instead of ginger dressing on the salad and It was way watered down. Plus, They don't offer any sauces with the hibachi, like every other place I've been to, but that would be forgivable if the experience was better. Food wasn't great, they don't warn you that there's sesame seeds in the rice and then the fried rice was barely fried and had no flavor! It was like steamed rice with some extras. The vegetables were sad, only zuchinni and onion barely seasoned, and cooked poorly. The menu made it sound like there would be mushrooms but that was cooked with the meat, not cooked with the rest of the vegetables. Then, to make everything worse, my 13 year old ordered the Teppan Chicken on the adult menu, because she is 13, and the chef gave all the adults that had chicken with their order the majority of chicken leaving her with a small portion for her meal, she ended up with a smaller portion of chicken than my 10 year old's junior steak. Speaking of steak: don't order the kids steak, it's more of a few thinly sliced rouladen style steak pieces and not an actual steak; had we known I wouldn't have ordered that. Hmmm perhaps it would be unjust to review this place without trying their hibachi side. So far, the only thing I've eaten was their dragon sushi roll and some fried rice. I got these 2 items to go since i was kind of in a hurry. The fried rice was a reasonable size box to go for about 4$. It tasted really good too, like the kind you get from the hibachi grill. The dragon roll however was 15$ according to the menu and the picture provided for it made it look rather huge so that would justify the price. The product i got to go however was much smaller than its picture and rather sad tasting too. I dislike it when my sushi rolls get over drenched in whatever sauce they add for the roll to the point my rice is falling apart and almost feels like soup. I like my sushi firm and fresh tasting. This was quite the opposite and for 15$, i was disappointed to get a rather small roll with subpar ingredients added to it like eel and some strange brown, chewy stuff im not familiar with in the center. Sunnys sushi knows how to do sushi right for a ridiculously good price, so i couldnt help but think that for 15$, i would have gotten double the quality and quantity from sunnys. read more

Took my family to Shogun Christmas Eve for a nice upscale dinner like we do every year. I made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and when we arrived they had no record of it. Although they had a table that was strike one. They seated us and immediately I saw dark grease dripping on the flat top cook area from above coming from the vent hood.She gave us menus that were absolutely filthy. "Should have left then"but we continued on. She took our drink order and returned 10 minutes later. We ordered our entrees, 2 sushi rolls and a order of steamed mussels for appetizers. 30 minutes goes by and no appetizers all the while the chef is starting our meal. We asked and she said to be patient all the while the sushi chef is MIA. The chef started his show and I will say prepared us a delicious meal. I had to get up twice to ask for refills for all of us. There were 5 in our party. Now for the grand finale. The check comes " see photo" and was $220.00 pre tip as you can barely make out on the ticket. Our meal added up to $180.00 and change. Not only did they add a gratuity saying it was pre tip but they were trying to get another 20 percent out of me. It is illegal to add a tip on any ticket in Texas unless it is discussed with the patron first and agreed upon by both parties. Facility is dirty, service horrendous but the chef is awesome and cooked a great meal after he cleaned the nasty grease off the cooktop . Check your ticket carefully before you pay. read more

Although I am not used to paying these prices, it was a night to remember! Here is how the night of sushi adventuring went. Before ordering we were gifted a thorough history of sushi by the sushi chef who has over 40 years experience making his craft. My good friend I took out to dinner that night was struggling with her chop sticks and practically butchering her sushi roll. The chef walked over to her side of the table and while correcting her with the proper form of holding the chop sticks at a 90 degree angle to better hold the roll, went on to feed her the next two rolls himself. This place once had its' heyday and it's not now. Walking in I was excited to see the main staples of an Asian style restaurant with many Hibachi tables in semi-private rooms. The water tanks needs major cleaning, it was fogged over green, and when I asked for appetizer plates for our small party, the staff literally did some quick math to conclude we didn't really need any because we didn't get that many appetizers. This was too underhanded not to be funny! I politely offered to wash the dishes if they could please send over small dishes, she complied which I could tell was a feat. (Also, I guess we're "classy" that we didn't want to be sticking our hands into the apps post-Pandemic?) Our family had a good time, the Hibachi chef was engaged and entertaining (we tipped well), everyone enjoyed their food. As a foodie, it wasn't great. Edible, yes, but not great flavors--more bland. Oh and the vent hood and Hibachi tables need a little lovin' (caulking to fill in some seams that have surely appeared after many years of use.) I don't mind aesthetics as long as the food delivers. Fried rice was good and the cabbage was good. The meats were all over cooked. Shrimp, lobster, steak and chicken all over cooked to well done and tough. The chef was ok but most of the usual hibachi tricks were botched, on top of over cooking all the meats. They use a lot, A LOT of mushrooms in the dishes as filler. Only ginger sauce came with the meal, no yum yum, teriyaki, soy or sesame. "Delicious" My wife and I love Hibachi, we are both military so we've done a good bit of traveling and can honestly say we've gotten spoiled when it comes to good food in big cities. So to find this place made us both very happy. We had tried 2 other local places and we were kinda disappointed to think that our favorite food would have to wait until we departed El Paso. The place is small but very quaint, it's size actually supports the authentic feel and ambiance, while it's competition restaurants are larger and full of frills i.e. Fountains and marble floors, this charming restaurant closes the esthetic gap with the coupled goodness of flavor and charm. I had a reservation for a party of 8 for hibachi tonight, our service was good. It did take a little while for our drinks but no biggie. We're understanding of short staff or being busy. Our food was amazing and so was our chef. The only issue I have is when it came to our bill. Our party had split checks from the beginning. One of our friends got charged for someone else's bill, the lady did not void that transaction and then went on to charge him his bill. So he paid about 230 dollars for a single persons bill. On top of the 5.00 fee that they charge you to use your debit/ credit card. (They did not mention that when we paid either) on top of gratuity for a party of 8. Which yes I know, is normal. IF everyone is on ONE bill. We all had separate checks. Not only this but when we asked about an additional charge to a meal (that was our misunderstanding, cause it was on the menu) the lady slammed the menu down in front of me and said "did you not read the menu?) with attitude from hell. That was NOT okay. On our way out, the set of people at the hibachi grill next to us, came and asked us about all the surprise charges added to our bills. Where do I start... this place is filthy and very unkept. I brought my elderly mother here for the show at 2pm on a Saturday for lunch. When we got the menus we were told we couldn't order lunch, that we had to choose from the dinner menu and pay the dinner prices. I specifically told the waitress I did not want to order extra food for my mom because she's ill and doesn't eat much but i was going to give her a small portion of my plate. My brother and his wife were told they couldn't share a single plate and pay the extra $8 to share so they were forced to get a larger meal with the extra $8 added to it so they could share that plate. Every plate had eggshells in the fried rice. The waitress charged me extra because the chef split my meal equally with my mom who didn't eat anything off her plate. When i asked her why she did that, she said because my mom had a lot of food on her plate. I asked why she forced my brother to buy a larger combo plate and she said "because they are young". Long story short, 2 plates were $90, this place is garbage and the waitress is trash. Don't waste your time or money on this place. You'll be charged extra for stuff just because she wants to and she'll argue with you until you give up or walk out. I don't know how this place has 4 stars. Absolute GARBAGE! They seemed confused when I asked them for the brown and white sauces which is basically the only reason why I go to Hibachi restaurants. The dipping is the best part! All they had was the brown sauce and it was WAY too sweet. Really gross. When I asked for the white sauce they went and got me mayonnaise. Seriously? Also the crab was fake crab. Nasty. Our cook was late so our waitress had to cook for us. Came here for my birthday. Not impressed. The waitress was nice. We tipped well. But this place is a Charlie Foxtrot. So again, we are on our quest to find out go to Japanese spot in town. Many will make recommendations, however our situation is a little different. See (if you've read my reviews you already are painfully aware lol) my wife is Japanese, and we JUST MOVED, from Japan to the states for the very first time. So a "good" Japanese place just won't do. Example, everyone raves about sushi, but when you read reviews, they're actually talking about "rolls", which isn't actually sushi. FYI: sushi is the piece of fish (or whatever) laid on top of the small piece of rice. Sushi, has rice. Now then take that same piece of fish, and lay them on a plate alone with no rice... You have sashimi. The rolled versions are just, well American ish takes on sushi. But not actually sushi. So anyways, our quest continued... We hadn't tried shogun, and while the name is kinda silly, we were like whatever, let's try it. So many swings and misses might as well knock them all out quick. We walked in and as usual, the chef and last running were Korean. Oh well. We sat down and the menu looked fine. The lunch special prices were very fair and they had a large sushi menu so why not. A wonderful older woman with a name tag Susie tended to us. She spoke in a certain way though.... Had a feeling something was up with Susie... After everything was done and order almost compete, she noticed my wife's accent and asked her (in Japanese) if she was Japanese. My wife politely answered back and they lady still speaking Japanese goes oh ok yea me too and I'm from Okinawa! Whaaaaaaaat!?!?!?! This made my wife so freaking happy! See, Okinawa tip to tip is about 80 miles long. Tiny Japanese island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean about 3 hrs by plane from Tokyo. So not only is this kind woman Japanese, but that is the EXACT tiny island that my wife is from born and raised and we just moved from about 1 month ago. So after being in town for 5 days, of all the odds in the world, we stroll into a place for sushi that happens to have a wonderful lady from the same tiny island as my wife. They must've sat there and chatted for an hour straight. It was so awesome seeing the 2 connect. Okinawan people are very proud and very awesome.. So I'm just thrilled my wife found her and her my wife. Now I realize not everyone's experience will be the same, but we thought this was just great. As far as the food: the sushi was real and my wife said we will come back, OFTEN! The salmon (sake) sushi was my favorite. So large and so fresh. 2 pieces for $5 so I ordered 4 pieces. The teppanyaki was fine. Nothing to rave about but at lunch special $7.95 price it's very worth it. The sushi though was legit.
