While in town for work, some of my colleagues and I were celebrating and were in the mood for hibachi. Unsure of where to go, a coworker suggested Koze. This location was tucked into a small strip mall, and looks kind of cramped. Walking in the waiting area we noticed a small area, and this place is a tad out dated. Peeling tint on the windows, old carpet, and in this place is in need of some TLC. Or a good coat of paint and a scrub. Five of us were seated after a small wait with a family of 3. After a long wait, our waiter Sebastian finally showed up and took our drink order. Various drinks ordered around the table, some ordering alcoholic beverages. I kept it simple and ordered a Coke. After another long wait, he was back with our drinks. Not wanting to wait another long period before he came back we wanted to order our food. Thankfully the guest family was ready. For me, soup for the appetizer, and the ribeye for dinner. Oddly enough, ribeye is hard to find at hibachi. Hoping it was going to be good. After a long wait, Sebastian brought our soup and salads to the table. I tried the soup, not a fan. Something about it just tasted odd. I was hoping for more of an onion-y taste, but was not getting that. To each their own... I just pushed it to the edge of the table next to my empty drink. I was hoping Sebastian took notice of the empty drink. After a reasonable wait time, our chef wheeled his cart with our food over, and confirmed our orders. Everyone's drinks were empty, so we were hoping Sebastian would be back soon. The chef, a white dude, attempted to speak Spanish, and distributed the ginger sauce and some sort of hot sauce of some sort. I was surprised there was no yum yum sauce. The chef got right to cooking, still giving Spanish lessons. Nice chef, just a bit odd. When you go to Disneyland you expect to see Mickey Mouse, not Chuck-e-Cheese. Same thing going to a hibachi. Impress me with Japanese, not Spanish. He gave us the basic hibachi routine of the volcano, train, and catch the egg game. Where's Sebastian? The Dad of our guests was annoyed his beer bottle was empty. Time to send a search and rescue for Sebastian. The chef saw we were annoyed, so he flagged down a young lady walking by and inquired about Sebastian. She stepped in and was our hero. Drinks flowed, and order was restored. Guest Dad got his beer, and things were better. My colleague inquired about yum yum sauce. Turns out, they had it, they just do not give it out freely. Said nice waitress came back quick with the yum yum sauce. The chef distributed rice. It was delicious. When it was time for the steak, it was cooked properly to my liking and was good. I see why hibachi restaurants do not serve ribeyes and stick with New York strips. Mine was a bit fatty, but lacked flavor. The chef did not do a very good job seasoning it and putting enough butter on it. It was not bad, but next time I'll go with the strip. That was 100% on me because I know ribeyes are a fatty cut. Abracadabra!! Sebastian reappeared. Not quite sure what happened, but he returned. Our drinks still stayed empty, but it was nice to see he was still alive. Our meal was finished, time for the check. Sebastian, might not keep your drinks filled quickly, but he was quick with the check. Looking at the bill, we were hit with an automatic gratuity. Once Sebastian reappeared, we asked him why we had to pay this, and he told us the restaurant had a 5 party gratuity rule. Considering the fact the service sucked, getting robbed on top of horrible service was an insult. Truth be told, I think the chef gave Sebastian a heads up that he was not getting a tip based on his performance, so he stuck it to us. Five is just an odd number to charge, I mean rob, gratuity from. We paid our bill and left. Do I recommend this place? Hmmm... Hard to say. Some things I can look past. Like the bad service, the odd chef, or the run down appearance. I can say the fried rice was absolutely delicious and my entree was pretty tasty. I might give it another try when I return to El Paso, but it won't be my first stop. This was easily a 4 star visit. We were seated in the grill area and then told to move because no grill chef was available. Then they got one of the three orders wrong. Food is good and service is ok. What is VERY disappointing is their tipping policy. A few months ago, a 20% automatic tip was added to parties of eight, then change to parties of six, and now it's of parties of four. On take out orders, an automatic Tip of 20% tip is added to orders over $150. While I understand, everything is more expensive, I think it's important to give patrons the opportunity to tip as they wish. Perhaps a raise on price is necessary, versus trying to compensate with tips. read more

As many times I have been here, surprised that I never left a review. The meals are great as well as the service. You can choose l your order as its cooked over the grill in front of you, sushi, eggrolls, or another selection on the menu. The food is very healthy as well. Make sure you come with an appetite since it can be a lot of food for one person. Then the chefs are very good as they spend time practicing their cooking skills. It is always a good show. Waitress had no idea what was even on their own menu and brought out the wrong roll and didn't even offer to take it off the bill. The sashimi rice was dry as well as the fish that seemed and tasted like rubber and can tell they don't prioritize the quality of their sushi. Sodas were flat. Brought out the wrong beer. The teppanyaki chef was funny but needed a lil more training on food seasoning and customer interaction, Benihana is the gold standard and they fell severely short. We've been customers of Koze for a very long time. Before the pandemic we were there every other Friday. We got takeout during Covid and always appreciated how well they packed to-go orders. We continued being regular customers with to-go orders because the loud music and noise made it difficult to talk with friends. But the last few months the quality has declined. On numerous occasions I had to call back and let them know either an item was wrong (missing ingredients) or bad ingredients (brown avocado) or really small rolls. On 2 occasions, I asked for thinly sliced lemon on my sushi because they had done this before. They charged me $2 one time and $3 the next. When I asked why, the answer was that the lemon was up to the chef. So if the chef didn't include it, there was a charge . They would try to address other issues by offering a refire of the dish. Not living close by, this option wasn't feasible. The health score concerns me. We're taking a break and might try again later. read more

Our chef was okay, he was not as entertaining or experienced as the other ones I was watching - he seemed pretty new and he spilled our sauces and dropped some of my steak on the table when plating our food. Our party of 9 was seated in a timely manner and the waiter was friendly and made some good suggestions of sake. We ordered some sushi rolls and salad for appetizers then we all ordered teppan meals. We loved Koze! We're from the east coast and have had trouble being land locked. We have been looking for sushi and finally found it! It's expensive sushi for sure. My one roll was $18 but it was delicious. My boyfriend got the ny strip hibachi plate and ate every last bite. The ginger salad and soup is really good. I had a date here and we were at the "grill" tables or Hibachi properly named. The cooker was funny and charismatic the show is good and entertaining even if you've been to a Hibachi before, I had the combo that included chicken and shrimp and my date got chicken and steak, the chef must've been confused because he served my date chicken shrimp and steak and he didn't charge it extra of course he agreed to eat the whole thing haha. We had Micah as our chef and he was great! He was so friendly and entertaining. He was nice enough to ask me if I wanted him to cook my tofu before the other proteins so there is no contamination. First, the food is delicious, though somewhat expensive for El Paso. My family often comes here for special occasions to eat at the grill or in the restaurant side. You can find better values in El Paso, but the ambiance and service are generally good. The billing for our last visit could have been better. Koze charges a three percent fee to use a credit or debit card. This charge seems tacky for a nicer restaurant (or at least one with prices of an aspiring upscale El Paso restaurant). More disappointing, I was charged an automatic 20 percent gratuity on my bill. I did not see this policy posted publicly when visiting the restaurant (though I wasn't looking for it). I believe Texas law requires restaurants to post such policies in easy-to-recognize ways. We were a party of four with four entrees and an appetizer - not the typical party where automatic gratuity is applied. Luckily, I saw this on my bill and did not double-tip. However, instead of a larger-than-twenty-percent tip I often give, I just added a bit to round off my bill. If Koze aspires to be an upscale restaurant, such policies detract from the good feelings at the end of the visit. read more

I went for teppanyaki with a group of women with reservations made before hand. Although space was a little tight for our big group, we made do and it worked out. The service was awesome and our chef was very engaging and lively throughout the night! I had scallops and shrimp and they were cooked perfectly, tender and not chewy at all. Overall, the food was very flavorful but was a little too salty for me as i typically use much less salt when I cook because I have a toddler. It was probably okay for the majority of the group as no one complained and only said how delicious everything was! Portions were very generous and most people took leftovers home. It had a perfect blend of sweetness from the marmalade and rice, the spiciness from the mayo sauce and jalapeños on top, the filling from the shrimp and crab on the inside, and that delicious kind of tang from the coconut to tie it all together. I loved the variety of food from the small salad to the hot soup to the rice and vegetables. The portions were all great (and some customizable), always enough food no matter what you order. This review is only for the sushi, and not the teppan table This was my first time trying Koze. Someone had recommended them for sushi so I figured I'd give it a try. We went on an early Sunday evening and didn't have to wait to be seated (party of 2). We started with the sticky gyoza. They were good, it was interesting bc they were covered in a rubbery cheese sheet. Next we got the Seoul tacos. I was hoping they would be better then they were with the rib-eye KBBQ. I felt that the meat was a little dry, and I wasn't a fan of the wonton wrapping used as the taco shell. Personally I felt it would be much improved on a regular tortilla. For the sushi, we got salmon and eel nigiri. Those were solid and well prepared. For rolls we got a spicy tuna roll, which wasn't bad but it wasn't impressive. We got the kamikaze, firecracker, the bbq eel, and the naked & afraid. They were tasty, but didn't feel like they were that special. In fact, at a certain point we weren't sure which was which since some of them were so similar. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely be back to try the Teppan table. And for sushi, maybe next I'll stick to just nigiri, but that's largely a personal preference. read more

This Japanese Fushion is the place to go if you are looking for a fun dinner with friends. You can choose to either dine at the regular dining tables or the hibachi grill. I've done both and have had a great experience. The restaurant is very nicely decorated. It really gives you a feel of a nice Japanese restaurants with the wooden glass panels. The hibachi experience is very entertaining. The cooks have a great sense of humor and put on a great show. The food at the hibachi is delicious and are very large in portion. For the sushi, I got the Chirashi bowl and it is so delicious. The fish is fresh and very tasty. I forget I'm in El Paso sometimes! The sushi rolls are very tasty however are not always consistent and are sometimes poorly rolled. I really recommend the Sen Roll. read more
