Finding good sushi in a place like El Paso is no easy feat. The place is well decorated, clean and the staff are incredibly friendly. We tried a little bit of everything from the short ribs, empanadas and all sorts of sushi from their sushi boat. The boat looks amazing and tastes the same. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants to eat at, but lately, the quality of food and the amount has diminished, but the prices continue to increase. The salad mix is not fresh, normally turning brown. The wasabi and ginger are very dry. I think I will start going across the mountain to eat at Sunny's. Tried with a group of friends and had a good selection to try from. Tried the gyoza, salmon sashimi, Lava roll, caliente roll, chicken katsu bento and Tempura ice cream with mochi. The gyoza is decently flavored but is not an item that I would drive that far to eat. The salmon sashimi didn't have a bad odor, however, it didn't taste fresh which was disappointing. Given we aren't by the coast, I wouldn't expect that freshness here. The Lava roll is was flavorful, however, it's a Americanized version which was definitely not authentic. I would order it again if I go back. The caliente roll wasn't my favorite; it was not fresh or flavorful. The chicken katsu bento was underwhelming since the chicken was less than a cm thick which felt like if I was eating fried bread crumbs unfortunately, don't order it if you are looking for some real katsu. We went on a Friday night as a party of four and were able to sit right away. It was pretty busy, though! The miso soup was very bland but you receive a good portion. My husband ordered off the grill and he said it tasted good, but wishes he got a bigger portion. The sushi was superb! I would go back and just order the rolls. The chefs are rolling right up front and it came very fast. I didn't need any extra sauce or other additives. The crunchy was crisp and the cucumber had the perfect bite. This place is pretty cool! It's in a shopping center, so there is plenty of parking, and they have lots of seating, including table in separate rooms off to the side. We both got Miso soup & Salad with our rolls. The ginger dressing was good and the Lemon Roll was a fun item to try-it was very good and I'd order it again. I also got a salmon roll, which is a classic. I was incredibly full by the time we left here! Boyfriend got veggie rolls of some sort and was also very pleased (and stuffed) when we left. This time the short ribs was still red (bloody). The assistantship manager indicated that they cook this way (rare) because it is how customers want it!!! Yes, I would order rare if I was eating a rib eye steak, BUT NOT BBQ SHORT RIBS. If it was Restuarant's procedure to give customers a choice how their meat will be cooked, it should be asked during ordering process. NOT to assume that "everyone" wants rare short ribs. Restaurant staff indicated they aren't trained to ask customers for their preference. This is not a good practice, thus, the low yelp rating. P.S. This is a tiny spot tucked away in a very unnoticeable shopping center out in Dyer nearly at the 375 intersection. This shopping center features a sketch looking Chinese restaurant, a place simply named "Karate", a fake E-Mary, and a vacuum repair shop (yea, I guess those still exist). I've been in El Paso a long time and I've never even seen this place. However, my Commander and I (es literally my second therapist aside from my actual therapist), try to have a long lunch together weekly and just talk about everything. This time, he wanted sushi and I was like sure ok. He said let's go here. I was like what? Dyer? Apparently he's been here a lot. In fact, we sat down and he didn't even look at the menu. So I ordered a Bento box, meat was pork. Before my food came out I was given soup that did not taste too good. It had a weird after taste almost on the bitter side. I ordered a raspberry ice tea and it did not taste too good. At was watered down too much. I ordered the kiddo white rice and chicken. This place is a hidden gem in the Northeast side of town. This is probably my favorite sushi spot in El Paso. It is a little small compared to other restaurants but the food is amazing. You will definitely get your money's worth. One sushi roll is as big as my forearm. The prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants. Ended up in the Northeast yesterday night and had some awesome Bento plates at Hamachi Sushi off Dyer. They're open til 9pm and it's a lot of food for $13 a plate. This is the 2nd time I've eaten at this location, and I would say that the sushi is ok. The presentation is beautiful and the proportions are decent sized! But there is something about the taste that is just missing the mark and it's a tad pricey. However, for the price each roll comes with a side of eel sauce, miso soup and a mini salad. Maybe its because I just moved from Maryland and was spoiled by sushi there but I was craving sushi and this just isn't what I had in mind. Recently moving back to the Northeast, I am constantly re-exploring a part of town I always thought I knew backwards and forwards. Since moving from the Northeast I've come to the realization that the Northeast is good for one thing, and one thing only...hole-in-the-walls. And I love HITWs as much as the next guy, but it's nice to stumble upon a good sushi place or cafe in the NE once in awhile. I spent the better part of my childhood stealing Skittles from the candy dispensers (jiggle twice to the right and once to the left) that was located inside the previous restaurant at this particular spot and have watched this place change ownership, management, staff and names. The NE seems to have ever revolving restaurants (usually with the same concept), but if you can stick it out longer than a year, you're probably here to stay. And I can happily say that I think Hamachi is one that will be around for years. My trip wasn't perfect, but the sushi roll I ordered was pretty close to flawless and if I was rating on the sushi alone they would've earned a 4 star rating, easy. From the outside, Hamachi Sushi looks sharp. Not necessarily like you're going in for the most expensive meal you've ever had, but generally put together...giving the feel that you'll have a rather pleasant evening in an authentic Japanese eatery. Walking in I still felt the "pleasant" vibe, but looking around I realized I was in a dressed-up HITW. Somehow this brought my comfort level way up. And as an added bonus, they do have about six or seven small private rooms. We were immediately greeted by the sole server, a sweet and quick paced woman. We chose our seats near the back and requested two iced teas. The teas came out and while I do think they were brewed in house (but maybe not), I thought they were a tad insipid so the addition of a Splenda sugar packet was necessary. No Sweet'n Low to be found on any table, though. Since my dining partner wasn't all about that sushi life (we're working on that), he opted to get the Beef Teriyaki while I went with the Dragon Roll...cause you know, eel. The menu didn't specify whether they use Unagi or Anago, but Unagi seems to be the go-to for sushi in EP so I'm making the assumption. First came the salad and the miso soup. The miso soup was weak and tasted ridiculously watered down. The tofu pieces were small, but acceptable. I only had two small pieces of nori and so overall I was very underwhelmed with what is usually my favorite starter. The salad had a very citrus-y dressing that was just okay. Not really the best start to a meal, but as soon as the roll came out I was immediately happy. The Dragon Roll was delish! Trying to get my Yelp sushi badge, I've upped my sushi eating in the past week (had to catch up to Jason J.) and have ate a ridiculous amount of eel in the form of Dragon and Caterpillar rolls in that time and can without a doubt say that HS serves up top notch thinly-sliced eel. The eel was soft and topped with a bit of tempura flakes as well as a touch of eel sauce. The tempura shrimp was cooked correctly and every ingredient in the roll was fresh. While I was disappointed in two seemingly simple dishes, their sushi is very impressive and HS will more than likely become a weekly ritual for me. Prices were beyond reasonable so it's great that it won't be too hard on my wallet to sustain this sushi-lovers lifestyle in the NE. And their Bento boxes were for super-cheaps so that's definitely on my "must try" list. read more
