Recently moving back to the Northeast, I am constantly re-exploring a part of town I always thought I knew backwards and forwards. Since moving from the Northeast I've come to the realization that the Northeast is good for one thing, and one thing only...hole-in-the-walls. And I love HITWs as much as the next guy, but it's nice to stumble upon a good sushi place or cafe in the NE once in awhile. I spent the better part of my childhood stealing Skittles from the candy dispensers (jiggle twice to the right and once to the left) that was located inside the previous restaurant at this particular spot and have watched this place change ownership, management, staff and names. The NE seems to have ever revolving restaurants (usually with the same concept), but if you can stick it out longer than a year, you're probably here to stay. And I can happily say that I think Hamachi is one that will be around for years. My trip wasn't perfect, but the sushi roll I ordered was pretty close to flawless and if I was rating on the sushi alone they would've earned a 4 star rating, easy. From the outside, Hamachi Sushi looks sharp. Not necessarily like you're going in for the most expensive meal you've ever had, but generally put together...giving the feel that you'll have a rather pleasant evening in an authentic Japanese eatery. Walking in I still felt the "pleasant" vibe, but looking around I realized I was in a dressed-up HITW. Somehow this brought my comfort level way up. And as an added bonus, they do have about six or seven small private rooms. We were immediately greeted by the sole server, a sweet and quick paced woman. We chose our seats near the back and requested two iced teas. The teas came out and while I do think they were brewed in house (but maybe not), I thought they were a tad insipid so the addition of a Splenda sugar packet was necessary. No Sweet'n Low to be found on any table, though. Since my dining partner wasn't all about that sushi life (we're working on that), he opted to get the Beef Teriyaki while I went with the Dragon Roll...cause you know, eel. The menu didn't specify whether they use Unagi or Anago, but Unagi seems to be the go-to for sushi in EP so I'm making the assumption. First came the salad and the miso soup. The miso soup was weak and tasted ridiculously watered down. The tofu pieces were small, but acceptable. I only had two small pieces of nori and so overall I was very underwhelmed with what is usually my favorite starter. The salad had a very citrus-y dressing that was just okay. Not really the best start to a meal, but as soon as the roll came out I was immediately happy. The Dragon Roll was delish! Trying to get my Yelp sushi badge, I've upped my sushi eating in the past week (had to catch up to Jason J.) and have ate a ridiculous amount of eel in the form of Dragon and Caterpillar rolls in that time and can without a doubt say that HS serves up top notch thinly-sliced eel. The eel was soft and topped with a bit of tempura flakes as well as a touch of eel sauce. The tempura shrimp was cooked correctly and every ingredient in the roll was fresh. While I was disappointed in two seemingly simple dishes, their sushi is very impressive and HS will more than likely become a weekly ritual for me. Prices were beyond reasonable so it's great that it won't be too hard on my wallet to sustain this sushi-lovers lifestyle in the NE. And their Bento boxes were for super-cheaps so that's definitely on my "must try" list. read more

Went here for dinner with my sister Very good for sushi in El Paso. Service was great and food was yummy. Got my sushi fix now here in NE El Paso So my son wanted sushi so I suggested Hamachi. Wow, so different from my first visit. Was disappointed with the service and food. This was lunch time so maybe that had something to do with it. Service should be the same no matter what meal you are having, the quality of the food was disappointing too. 1 star for subpar service, negative stars for nasty, inedible food . Small sushi restaurant in a sketchy shopping center. I guess we were feeling a bit suicidal for trying this place. We ordered the hungry roll, the dragon roll, salmon sushi and masago sushi. The rolls were poorly meshed together and immediately fall apart when you try to pick up each pieces. Nothing was fresh, everything was soaky and slimy. Absolutely horrible and we will probably have bad diarrhea from the small amount that we consumed. This is our "second office" at work. We visit at least once a week. I get the usual everytime- Phillydeep roll, edamame, and hot Jasmine tea. Such comfort food, especially in the winter. The service is good and timely. We will be back! read more

Latest update on their sushi has improved since my very first encounter. I played it safe by ordering their caterpillar roll and volcano roll. Pretty good! The volcano roll was different compared to how i usually see it. No sauce to bake in, but instead the scallops were fried or sauteed with a sort of sweet and savory flavor, possibly sesame. It was good but left it tasting dry. The caterpillar roll was delish though! Wish the chef woulda given more ginger than the 3 pieces basically. I asked for more which he gladly gave me a mountain full lol. Service was ok. I felt i had to flag her down a couple times to finally get my order and checks, but prompt after doing so. I was in and out quick enough on my tight schedule that day to still be on time for where i needed to be. was sort of in a rush for lunch this day and this was sort of my last resort after finding out a couple spots were closed for the day. This is a great spot for a dinner date and I had no idea they even existed! I went here last night on a date, and my experience was awesome! Walking in, the hostess greeted us and asked to take our temperature and hand sanitizer was available immediately. The entire staff was wearing masks and gloves, and were also very friendly. They have an amazing selection of basic and specialty rolls. For appetizers, we ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura and the jalapeno bombs, both came out in a timely fashion and were surprisingly delicious. I honestly was a little bit surprised by the jalapeno bombs, they caught me off guard with the freshness,flavor and originality. For the entrees, I ordered the Vegas roll, and my date ordered the seaweed salad and vegetable California roll (he's currently on a vegetarian diet). My Vegas roll was HUGE! Our waitress mentioned that the specialty rolls were large servings, but I literally got the equivalent of 2 standard sushi rolls! And it was delicious. I also had to try out the seaweed salad, and again, surprisingly fresh, cold, and overall pretty good. I definitely will visit here soon, I had a really, enjoyable date. This is still the best Sushi place I've eaten at in El Paso so far. On my last visit my girlfriend and I decided to visit this location as it's become a must go to place whenever I'm in town. Our server was friendly and pointed out a few specials which was very cool. We ended up trying the Calamari Roll which was great. The calamari was juicy and fried in a batter that had a great pepper taste. it came with a few calamari rings on the side that weren't used in the sushi. Overall, I think this is my favorite roll. We also got the Lion King and the Salmon Tempura rolls. Both were very tasty. The Lion King roll was very fresh and tasty. The Salmon Tempura has a nice crunch to it and it's wonderfully rich. Trying to find a yummy Japanese restaurant and I think I found it. The restaurant is cozy. Nice decor. Very clean and there's even tables for groups of like 8-10. The sushi bar is nice. Overhead music was a mix of hip-hop and what sounded like K-pop. The sushi rolls and sashimi looks great and they have udon soup but no ramen or soba noodles. Which are my favorite. Just not a fan of udon. Staff was kind and welcoming also. No pictures because my husband and I ate the food too fast. The food was great and came with miso soup and a small salad. I have been going to Hamachis for 5 years now. I've gotten to know the Owner, & his Mother, who is currently running Hamachis; while he is in California. It is truly a hidden gem. The food is fresh and delicious, everytime. The Young Man making the sushi has been there as long as I have been eating there, & he's excellent. The waitresses are the ones who come and go. But a new waitress named Alex is Friendly and a quick study. Has a great Personality and is fast and efficient. Hope She stays for a long time. It's a nice place, always clean too.
