Ordered salmon sashimi, spicy tuna hand roll, shrimp and asparagus tempura. I'm not really ordering anything fancy so it's going to be all about freshness. It is Banff after all - nowhere any body of salt water...... It's just me and a friend so we sat at the sushi bar and watch all the action. They were very busy with takeout order (7:30pm Sunday) so took about 10 min for my food to come. All good. Sashimi - anytime the sashimi comes as thin slices it already score high for me = good knife skills and fresh ingredients. And it was yummy. Tip: ask for low sodium soy sauce. Husband and I stopped here for lunch while visiting town. Very warm and attentive staff in a laid back environment. The "specialty roll" selection is not as extensive as most places weve been to but everything we ate was delicious. We ordered the volcano roll, salmon nigiri with the aburi mayo and regular, eel nigiri, and a salmon avocado roll and everything was soooo good! Sushi Bistro is ideal if you happen to be craving for sushi in Banff. The location is conveniently right in the middle of downtown Banff. The menu is quite limited, but it has most of the basics. When I went, they had a Bento Box special where you can choose 3 items from a list (different sushi rolls, salmon & tuna sashimi, takoyaki, gyoza, edamame, etc.), and they come with miso soup and salad. The miso soup contains actual vegetable chunks (mostly chopped up onions) and the small salad is a combination of regular lettuce / green salad and a bit of seaweed salad. They do a good job with social distancing inside the restaurant, with tables spread apart. I also saw the waitress sanitizing the menus by wiping them down after each use. this was our first dinner on our five day vacation in Banff this was also our first time ever in Canada and having Canadian sushi versus USA sushi. absolutely delicious could not possibly recommend it any further the service was so kind and genuinely nice to us. we got several different types of sushi rolls Ramen udon and one of those Donburi bowls. The food was so delicious and also for a pretty good price. our seating was pretty cool we got the couch table which is literally an actual couch and arm chairs with a coffee table. it was very comfy to sit back once we were very full! next time I come back here I'm definitely hitting this spot up again. read more

Quality sushi in downtown Banff? A city that's landlocked , situated within a huge national park, and surrounded by mountains? Yes, I was definitely surprised too. We randomly stopped by for a light lunch prior to stocking up groceries. The restaurant shares space with a tea store. They have menus with pictures and calorie counts on sushi(!). Its order by menu similar to a dim sum menu. Another thing that was somewhat unusual was that the sushi chef was a woman! Women sushi chefs are rare, as written by Trevor Corson's Zen of Fish: The Story of Sushi. BTW: Excellent read! We liked most of the things we ordered, so 4 stars overall, especially nigiri and tempura. Veggie Tempura: Fried perfectly and the veggies (asparagus, yams, broccoli) all retained some texture and didn't turn mushy. Just enough tempura breading to complement, and not overwhelm. 5 stars Sushi: I got tako, yellowtail, saba, unagi, and salmon for nigiri (2 per order) along with some eel-avocado rolls. The rice was soft, seasoned, and loosely packed so it falls apart upon the first bite. Fish toppings were fresh too. 4 stars. The waitress was very kind and open during our visit here, assisting us with our food, questions, and other guidance we experienced. The waitress would always double check our orders and give us suggestions for the meal! The overall ambience inside the restaurant fits its overall aesthetics, just like a normal Japanese restaurant in Japan, the place is quiet, playing some nice, euphonious music. It has numerous space to accommodate a quantity of people, such as for brunches, parties, et cetera. One of the best sushi experiences I've ever had! The food and service was beyond wonderful. I had the sweet omelette nigiri and white tuna nigiri. Coming from having a Japanese relative I quickly could tell that the menu is authentic. Our waiter offered us free sake for our birthday. He was very helpful and made our night. I ordered the eel roll and a specialty roll. Everything that we ordered was delicious and fresh. 10/10 recommend. read more

Amazing food! My family and I are vegetarians, so finding restaurants that can accommodate us is so much harder than it should be. Finding a sushi place that offers to change their cutting boards in order to avoid cross contamination... we were blown away!! Their service was fast, friendly, and extremely helpful. Decided to give this place a try this past weekend. We came for dinner and were the only ones in the restaurant. I believe by the time we left their was one other person and I think a takeout order as well. Our server was very friendly, and our food came out quickly. We ordered a few different rolls, and some hot food appetizers ; gyoza, chicken teriyaki, tempura. The prices are a little high, but I guess on par for Banff. To conclude, I'd say give them a try. My family and I were looking for a more casual sushi restaurant and I took a chance on this restaurant. The food and service were mediocre. We had to wait a little before they sat us even though there tables open. You order on a chart they give you and there's a menu with corresponding photos. The options for rolls were very limiting. We picked probably 6-7 different dishes for 4 people and the dishes were very small. None of us were full and each dish was also very expensive. Small, cozy restaurant with Japanese staff working. We were seated quickly but we got the table with a couch and low table so it was kind of awkward to eat. Luckily, my kids didn't mind. We ordered a small amount of sushi, sashimi and miso soup and all were very tasty - particularly the miso soup, it had great depth of flavors of vegetables and perhaps some sort of fish/seafood (?) - not just your usual miso! My friends and I were dying to eat some sort of Asian food because we have been eating junk during our trip here. Luckily we found Sushi Bistro close by so we stopped for lunch here. We came right when it opened which was convenient because we were seated immediately. Menu isn't anything special, they serve the typical rolls and nigiri + sides as most restaurants. Ordering system was weird as we had to write down what we wanted with marker on a plastic menu and it was difficult to split the bill at the end as we had to indicate what we ordered one at a time when paying. I ordered the BBQ Eel Avocado roll and the Takoyaki. The roll was pretty good, but they only include 6 pieces per order so I was left feeling hungry. The takoyaki wasn't anything special, it tasted premade/frozen but wasn't too bad. Service was meh, only one waitress who couldn't speak well enough english. I wasn't too harsh on this place because I was craving sushi and we were all starving. But this place might not be the first choice when visiting Banff. read more

During a recent trip to Banff my wife and I ended up eating at Sushi Bistro two times. We arrived in Banff around 8:30 PM and were hungry. We stumbled upon this sushi joint and decided to go for it. The prices are more than reasonable for Banff. They don't have all the fancy rolls that other sushi restaurants have but they have all the basics plus a little more. We came back for dinner the next night and ordered a bit more after a long hike. However, since they just have mainly basic rolls, we were a bit limited with selection. One complaint I have is that the rolls have a little too much rice on them. IMO, you can generally tell if a sushi roll is just filler by the thickness of how much rice is on the seaweed. A little too much here. The second thing is that the service is just so so. For some reason the first time we were here, we told the server that we were ready to order. She said OK. Then she walked away and went on to do something else. I thought we were fairly clear but we had to track down another server to take our order. Then when we went to pay, there were two or three workers talking and then told us to wait. They left the till and then we didn't see anyone again for another minute. If the service wasn't so lousy I would give it 4 stars but maybe more a 3.5. read more

The people were polite and that the highlight. Service was slow and the food took forever. When I asked a few questions about the menu, the waitress replied yes BUT when the order came out, it was a different result. The salmon skin was very bad. It is supposed to be be crispy with some meat, test the skin on theirs is soft and almost rubbery. Now here is the classic, the sushi we ordered did not have a swipe of wasabi on the rice between the fish. I mean that is sushi 101. Will never go back!!! read more

When you think of places on the planet to get great sushi, Banff, Alberta doesn't come to mind for obvious reasons. Enter Sushi Bistro! A five star, reasonably priced sushi experience. Hooray. Banff itself as beautiful as it is, is fairly insular, so people can kind of just charge whatever for things knowing that you'll pay for it. So I was very pleasantly surprised by not only fresh sushi ordered a-la-carte from an adorable laminated menu but by the price point. A fine place for sushi in Banff, with excellent prices considering the location. We often check it out when in town from Calgary & have never had a bad meal here. I did once get a vegetarian roll that had some roe smeared on it, but they dealt with it professionally & with the proper amount of apology (probably too much, actually). Considering we've had this issue with more than one sushi joint & most of them do not see a problem (some even just scrape a few eggs off & return the same roll to me) I was impressed with how well Sushi Bistro dealt with it. You can tell a lot about a place by how they deal with difficult situations. My partner mostly sticks with the nigiri & has never complained. Yes, it is not quite as good as top places you will get on the coast, but it is nowhere near the ocean. The fish can't swim here without going over some mountains. The menu includes calorie counts for each item, but I suspect they might not always be accurate. I would be very surprised if the deep fried banana with ice cream was only 350 calories, given the serving size. But I will happily eat several of them in penance if I am wrong! (Seriously, try this - share it around the table if necessary) TV at the bar sometimes has live sports & sometimes has ski videos. But it is way in the back - this is a spacious place relative to the number of seats. Accessibility - floor space is very spacious & easy to negotiate. I think the main street entrance is accessible but if not, you can enter the building through Brewsters Mountain Lodge - all the shops on this block are connected to it. While visiting/vacationing at Banff Park the wife and I ate here twice. We both found the sushi to be pretty darn good. They have a decent selection (including Uni, unfortunately it was out when we went... Alas No quail egg though. Not sure about other fun ones like Anago, Toro, et al). Both nights the service was really friendly and reasonably fast (we saw the same server both nights and she was super nice). Prices were quite reasonable especially considering its isolated mountain location. Highlights: - Salmon sashimi (very good) - Some tofu and onion roll (yum) - A large roll with scallop (super yum, it's in one the Yelp review pictures) - Unagi (yum) I and the wife eat a lot of sushi and I often see the "compared to NYC or SF Bay Area" comments... we are picky and have lived in SF Bay Area, Seattle, etc and have tried a lot of so called high end places. Don't let the Banff location or negative / mediocre reviews discourage you if you are a sushi aficionado. This place is good and should fill your craving. The portions aren't huge, the service isn't great, the execution is mediocre, but hey the price is right. Sushi Bistro is one of those cheap, 'gets your sushi craving full' kind of places. There's really nothing special about it, but realistically one doesn't feel like they've been ripped off, and it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not.
