This cozy little non-AYCE sushi spot is a hidden gem located in small plaza in Tustin. There is a good amount of parking available. As its name suggests, you are greeted by a few large stuffed teddy bears upon entry and I thought that was just super neat. The quality and portions are great in addition to having prices that are a bit lower in comparison to other sushi spots in the area. I got their Sushi Bear Combo with a Rainbow Roll as my special roll choice that's included in the combo (pictured) and it was delicious and very filling ($43)! My friends also ordered the Ika Yaki (Grilled Whole Squid) and it was legit the BEST GRILLED SQUID I'VE EVER HAD ($13) - I highly recommend it! Sushi Bear was such a cute experience! The food was great and the service was fantastic. There is a seriously homey vibe upon walking into the deceptively large dining room. Tons of seating with lots of life. Was not expecting such a comfortable interior. Holiday music was playing, the weather was cold, and the food was hot. What more could you want? Came here on a Thursday night and was seated right away. Service was decent and the food came out relatively quickly. The ambiance is good for families -- not too loud inside. We ordered a lot of Nigiri, Vegetable Tempura, Dragon Ball Z Roll, and the Natural Viagra Roll. Ama Ebi (8/10): just wanted to highlight this nigiri because it was my favorite!! Really enjoyed the sweet citrus flavor, and I loved the shrimp head. Vegetable Tempura (5/10): although the sushi here is great, I wouldn't recommend the tempura. My family and I have been coming here for years. The service is not great. They only have one waiter who is very slow. Up until recently we enjoyed the rolls. Unfortunately at our most recent visit they served us a roll that had visibly grey fish. It looked very bad. When we sent It back they tried telling us It was fine to eat. They even tried to tell us that maybe we never tried that roll before (It was not our first time eating that roll or fish). We did not agree. We paid and left. They really should have offered to make It right. (A new roll? Take It off the bill?) We won't be back. We have spent a lot of money at this sushi spot over the past year or two and would expect to have them make It right. Not worth the risk of getting sick. Do not recommend. read more

We had originally planned on having conveyor belt sushi, the hour+ long waits at the two restaurants we tried suggested that it was not meant to be. We decided on Sushi Bear as a compromise since it was close by and still sushi but delivered by human hands instead of mechanical means. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we were greeted by the sushi chefs but weirdly ignored by the lone waitress on duty for over 5 minutes and left standing at the entrance before she decided she would ask if we wanted to eat there. Uh yeah, why would we be standing there looking at them expectantly if not for service? Even though there was only one wait person working (seems understaffed for a Saturday night?) the dining room was not busy with only two other tables occupied, which is why being ignored for seating was confusing. So after we get a table, I discovered they adhered to my personal restaurant pet peeve of their not providing any physical menus. I don't want to scroll my phone when I'm out at a restaurant to eat and relax. I realize some people don't mind but some do so restaurants should at least have the option available. Plus it takes a long time to load the multiple pages and scroll scroll scroll. We were brought plates and a weird bowl of sugar dusted fried wonton chips tightly wrapped in plastic wrap. I've only seen the wonton chips thing in Americanized Chinese restaurants catering to the sweet and sour pork/Family Dinner D crowd so that wasn't a good sign. As it was, the food was not really the problem. We ordered the dragon crunch roll, basically a shrimp tempura stuffed California roll surrounded by eel. Extravagant usage of eel sauce was tempered by the bonito shavings which added a welcome savory smokiness. Spider roll had too much breading on the soft shell crab, which obscured the delicate crunch of the thin shells. Both these rolls were very large in diameter and required biting into pieces (difficult with the seaweed acting as a hindrance) or you just had to take a giant choking hazard bite. The taste was good though. Ikura seemed extra fishy but I enjoy the oily pop off the salmon eggs so that was fine. Cucumber slices provided a refreshing crunch. The bento is a pretty good deal. You get a lot of food but maybe it seemed that way because we had over-ordered for two people. The salmon rolls were very fresh. We had ordered the ika yaki grilled squid as an appetizer but it came last after we had already eaten most of the other foods. That was especially aggravating because the squid was overcooked to the point of of hardened charcoal briquettes at the ends of the tentacles and the rings were day-old gum level chewy. Honestly I considered sending it back when the appetizer arrived so late in the meal and seriously regretted not doing that when it became apparent it was mostly inedible. Service is slow but with only one waiter working the entire dining room, that's to be expected. It's not really excusable though since it's a weekend night not weekday lunch time. We went to the restroom to wash up before eating and while there is a sink outside the restrooms, no soap or way to dry was to be found. We went into the restroom for those things and found the bathroom cleanliness level disappointing. I think this is probably another reflection of shortstaffedness and inadequate managerial oversight. I felt bad for the one waitress running everything so I still tipped her 20% but it makes me question returning for another meal, which is a shame because I enjoyed the food. read more

The best sushi restaurant in non-coastal Orange County. No competition. They actually do sashimi and nigiri right. Good real sushi and good beer. The staff and service are also consistently great. I'm a big fan of the wooden booth seating and Japanese imagery throughout. If you want to eat at the nicest sushi joint ever, you'll probably have to go somewhere in Newport Beach / Newport Coast for Orange County standards, but your wallet will feel it. However, if you want to have a rock solid sushi place to add to your rotation that does all of the blocking and tackling correctly, knows how to do real sushi, has great service, and delivers a consistent experience that whether they are a weekly visit, a monthly visit, or occasional splurge (however your sushi frequency may vary) you'll always have a place up your sleeve that will produce a great experience every time. read more

My absolute favorite sushi spot. Their fish is always so fresh and delicious. My go-to order is usually the fresh spring roll or dragon ball z roll--both are absolutely amazing, especially if you like meaty, no rice rolls. The sauces that are paired with their rolls are also so delicious. Kinda sad seeing how much the price went up over the years but I do really appreciate that the size of their rolls are still much larger than other places. I first started coming here before the pandemic, and then even after it happened I continued to get take out from there. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't very crowded and the service was great! The quality of the sushi was amazing. The portion sizes were decent too and prices were not bad. The inside of the restaurant is really cute too. My only complaint was that they don't have any pictures of the food on the menu. They have a lot of options (which is a good thing) but it was pretty overwhelming trying to decide without any pictures. I ended up using the pictures on yelp to help out but it was still difficult going back and forth looking for specific items on yelp from the menu. read more

This place has been on my bookmarks for over a year since moving to the neighborhood! Really great reviews so my expectations were really high. Came in on a Saturday around 1 pm, no wait and service was great, everyone was welcoming with a greet and the servers were attentive. Now onto the food! We got the Chef's choice sashimi 6pcs & 10pcs sushi and the Candy Cane roll that has salmon and avocado on the outside and spicy tuna on the inside. The sashimi didn't taste fresh and usually are soft and buttery to eat, this was really firm and hard and lacked any type of flavor/taste that I just can't describe. Also got a lunch combo that had chicken katsu and tempura... you can see from the pictures the chicken katsu was super tiny and thin like they smashed it with a hammer .. and because it was so small it was also super dry... I was really disappointed with this dish. Overall, I don't think this restaurant was how it once was based on the other reviews or maybe we just came on a bad day :( spent over $70, not worth it and not coming back. read more

We had the Sushi Bear Combo with 6pcs sashimi, 10pcs sushi, & a Candy Cane roll. Everything was presented well but the fish lacked flavor, and had an almost tough texture. I love salmon that is firm, buttery, and almost melts in your mouth and the salmon here didn't meet that expectation. The chicken katsu and mixed tempura bento was also visually appealing but disappointing. The potato salad was old, katsu chicken was very thin and tough, but the tempura was delicious. Bear with me when I give you a review that feels like a bear hug. I came here with some friends and enjoyed some sashimi and a hawaiian roll. Fresh fish that will make you feel like you were in the ocean where the fish was caught. Or like fresh salmon that a bear caught with his bare hands. 10.26.2021 Ordered online and did pick up after Little O finished her XC race. California rolls and salmon roll were freshly made and cut to the right size. Spider roll had a freshly fried soft shell crab and the flavors blended well together. The red flakes on the outside of the roll made think of hot Cheetos so I told Little O that's what it was. LOL! Hubby's teriyaki chicken was delicious. The chicken was cooked through and the sauce on the side was tasty. The tempura was lightly battered and fried perfectly. Even with a short drive home they were still crunchy and tasty. I think we may have found our new go to place near home for sushi. Came here for dinner with a friend on a Saturday night at 7PM, and there was no wait at all! There were plenty of seats available as well, so we were seated very quickly. Although, this place has a pretty small parking lot that's shared with other stores too. We ordered the Final Fantasy Roll since it seems most ordered on Yelp, but I thought it was just okay. The raw fish on it didn't seem to fresh to me... then we tried the Dragon Ball Z roll and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS. The salmon melts in your mouth and the lemon slices were a nice tangy touch to it. The scallops on top also melts in your mouth too, so we ordered another plate of this lol. We also ordered the yellowtail collar, but it was kiiiind of a small piece for a fish. It was seasoned well, but wish the fish was meatier and wouldn't fall apart easily. Overall, really enjoyed this place and their customer service here :) They also have cinnamon tortilla chips that remind me of churros! read more

I've been wanting to try this spot and decided to bite the bullet by ordering through Postmates for dinner. Service fees were a bit more than usual due to the distance, but I wanted to try something different from rotation and this was at the top of places to try. What we ordered: 2 Choice Bento Box with Mixed Tempura & Beef Teriyaki Candy Cane Roll Yellowtail Sashimi The yellowtail sashimi comes 3 pieces to an order with the usual garnishes of shiso leaf, shredded radish, lemon and a carrot. Nothing super fantastic about it aside from the thick slices which was nice. The candy cane roll was topped with salmon and avocado with spicy tuna and cucumber inside. The spicy tuna definitely had a kick and was surprising to pack such heat. The boyfriend got the the 2 choice bento. Beef teriyaki was cooked how he liked it - medium well. The sides were pickles, potato salad and a small slice of orange. Decent portions, but I think he prefers our usual rotation for the value. For our first try, it wasn't bad, but I think it would have been better as a dine-in option. I was drawn by their unique naming convention for their rolls, but also interested in exploring sashimi and nigiri selections. For freshness, I think I'll have to give them another try in person, or like, when we can eat inside again. read more

Honestly I was so hungry so I got three things! Two rolls and one hand roll. Big portions and amazing quality sushi! I like that their lunch specials also extend to a weekend, which is nice for us because having it limited to M-F makes it pretty much impossible to try as neither of us work near Tustin. The portion sizes are really generous too: the sashimi was really big cuts of fish, and the rolls were also a good size. In all, this is a good lunch spot if you are looking for a sushi place that isn't AYCE. I would say this is a solid sushi restaurant for a weekday lunch. I am on the fence about giving it four stars because there wasn't much standout about sushi bear either that would make it any more memorable that other sushi joints.
