Sushi Bay is part of the standard rotation, for good reason. Sushi is always fresh and tasty, the fried rolls are always still hot when you get them. Pretty good standard selection and some solid specialty rolls as well. I really haven't had a bad meal here. The chicken or beef teriyaki is nothing special (a little bland and tough) but I still order it once in awhile anyway. Prices are absolutely unbeatable- you get a solid amount of GOOD food. Even my sushi snob boyfriend (doesn't like fish unless we are in a coastal city) likes it here. Some of the staff is super friendly, some not so much- but it's absolutely never unpleasant. I've seen some people complaining about the AYCE (I don't to this) but it's pretty standard to be charged for any pieces you don't eat. read more

I think it's one of the best hidden sushi gems in the highlands if not all of Denver. Never too busy to get a table. Quick service and reasonably priced. I highly recommend the Twister roll, Banana girl roll, Bali roll, Ocean garden roll and Snow Mountain Roll. read more

Sushi Bay is comfort Japanese food for me. It's not the most amazing or even creative sushi I've had, but there's something about this place that keeps me coming back almost every week. If I could have their miso and hot tea every day, I would. They also have one of the best happy hour selections I've seen in Denver. I love their jalapeño yellowtail, Unagi sashimi, spicy girl roll, and tempura udon soup. Most importantly, you can tell the seafood is fresh. I came here for lunch with two co-workers on a Thursday. Found the place on yelp, and even though the reviews were mixed we decided to check it out for ourselves. The lunch specials are great, we are really happy to have a reasonable sushi lunch spot around the area since the other two are sushi sasa and sushi hai. They had a variety of lunch options all between $8 - $12 and we each decided on different ones. Bento Box, Roll Combos (extensive list of options to choose from), a Sushi lunch and a shrimp tempura roll. Each meal came with a miso soup and ginger salad. It was a lot of food, and we were all very satisfied with our meal. The food and the fish were fresh and tastey. The service was friendly and we were in and out of there in 45 minutes, the perfect amount of time for us to get back to work. We will probably be back. read more

Not sure how they stay in business... we got sushi and a noodle dish. Both were disappointing. The sushi portions are noticeably small. The yaki soba I got was supposed to have chicken. The flavor was basic, and salty, made me think of bland cafeteria food and there were just 3 small flakes of chicken in the whole dish (pulled to the top for the photo because at first I thought they forgot to include the chicken so I was rooting around looking to find the pieces of chicken). At $29.95, not worth it since any type of sushi (even rolls) is very heavy on rice, something around 3 parts rice, 1 part sushi. Also, took forever to get drink refills despite thinning lunch crowd. Will I Come Back? Maybe. If so, I will only get their lunch sushi roll deal that is $9.50 for two rolls (cut into 16 pieces total). That should be enough due to the amount of rice. Sushi Bay is fantastic. I am a giant fan of sushi and the sushi I have had here is equally as good as the mid-level places around town - and they have a $1/piece happy hour. Sushi Bay opened on the 11th, and I went on the 12th - and already their service was fantastic and ironed out. Granted, the place was not packed when I went in at 5:45 - but other places I have reviewed during their first week have been total train wrecks so that they were this good so fast says a lot - but even if the service is great if the fish isn't fresh and prepared well - you aren't going to come back. The selling point (For me at least) is their happy hour. Many of the kinds of fish that you are likely to order are $1/piece. Some of the more expensive pieces of fish are $1.50/piece. Salmon - buck a piece. Squid - buck a piece. Striped bass - buck a piece. Tuna - buck fifty, Yellow tail- buck fifty, Octopus - buck fifty. Just to name the ones I ordered. All the fish was expertly cut, tasted fresh, and was presented artfully. The service was fantastic and not at all bothersome or a nuisance. The interior is really fantastic, you would never know that The Hole had been here if you had not been in it. The hole was dingy, dirty, and the food was horrible. I'll say this: these guys handled a table of 8 people on separate checks with relative ease, so kudos to them. The ordering runs the same way it does in most sushi places. Mark the rolls and sushi you want and they'll bring it out for you. However, some of the items I wanted weren't on the paper menu, so they said, just write it down and we'll bring it out. Which worked out swimmingly. I got two different rolls and two different nigiri sushi. The rolls were great! I really enjoyed them and I would have them again, but the nigiri I couldn't eat. I tried one piece from both types (salmon and tuna, I think) but could barely get them down. They were extremely dry and didn't taste fresh at all. When I realized that the pieces of sushi were so vastly different in taste to the rolls, I took a look inside the rolls and, sure enough, they were a fish paste instead of slices of fish. Now, don't get me wrong, I have NO problem with that. I will eat the shit out of those types of rolls at sushi happy hour at Go Fish, but I was paying $10-$12 for those rolls and $4-$5 for the nigiri and I've had much better sushi for that price. I think their sushi is WAY overpriced for what they deliver. At the end of the night my tab came out to $50 with tip and I feel like, while I was full, I didn't really get my money's worth when it came to quality. They would be getting two stars, but their service really was great and they handled our table very well. read more

It would be ideal to come here with at least 4 people to ensure that you get a good variety of rolls. Contemplating Sushi Bay vs. Sushi Hai? Contemplate no more. The atmosphere and service is far more personal, quaint and the sushi beats that at Sushi Hai by a long shot. Portions of sashimi are 2x larger, the presentation is as good if not better. And if you're not a Hai clubber with big city (see: LoDo) collared shirts, fancy designer jeans and gucci gucci shoes, the decision on where to eat great local sushi in the Highlands 'hood is a no-brainer. I don't choose my sushi based on the "who's who" and "need to be seen" crowd. I choose it based on quality and price. I was torn between a 3 and a 4, but given that I went to Sushi Bay twice in one week, I'll go with the 4. Sushi Bay has a really great lunch deal: 2 rolls + miso soup and salad for $9.50 or 3 rolls for $13, and they give you a pretty big roll selection. I had the 2 roll lunch and was very full. The miso soup is really good. I'm not a big fan of the salad because it's mostly iceberg lettuce and has quite a bit of dressing. The yellow tail scallion and unagi rolls (unagi roll came with unagi and cucumber) were both good, and they drew pretty flowers on my plate; I appreciated the effort to make even a lunch special look pretty. The spicy crispy tuna appetizer is really good; it's a big ball of sushi rice that's breaded, topped with spicy crunch tuna, avocado, and masago, and cut into fours. Their speciality rolls are really good too. My favorite was the spicy girl, black pepper tuna, avocado, and yellow tail, topped with a jalapeno and sriracha sauce--pretty spicy! Their jaguar roll is good too, deep fried eel and avocado, topped with eel sauce. Not a big space or sushi bar, but both are nice. Service is very attentive without being invasive. read more

The sushi itself is about average but the service is above average. I am a huge fan of their happy hour and lunch specials. Two rolls, soup and salad for $10 is a pretty awesome deal for sushi lunch. Sushi Bay is our go-to sushi spot when we're looking for an affordable fix. Quality vs. price is a good balance; they're not a high-end or low-end joint, so you can come here weekly without a lot of wallet pain. We have lately been coming in for AYCE on Sunday nights. It's $27.95 now, but worth every penny. While it's nigiri / rolls only when it comes to sushi, they go surprisingly light on rice, so you don't feel like you're getting carbo-stuffed. The offering is extensive, and includes most of their rolls and nigiris, including things like surf clam, eel, sweet shrimp (ama ebi), etc. Also included is many of their apps, like seaweed salad, yellowtail collar, mussels, and more. THE AYCE really a fantastic value for the price, and nothing tastes like it's past its prime. The sushi chefs have skill and know what they're doing back there; the rice is consistently some of the better rice I've had; always balanced flavors, never under- or over-sticky. We've never been disappointed here. You should try it, too. read more

If you get the all-you-can-eat deal, here are the specifics: anything you cannot eat, you will be charged $1 each for. They aren't sneaky about telling you that and I honestly understand why they would do it, so I have no hard feelings about it. I ate 50 pieces of sushi and rolls before having to stop and pay $8 on top of the $30 for the all-you-can-eat deal. So, all in all, I was in pretty good shape. And since I am against wasting anything, particularly food, I think this is a good policy. By the way though, you have to order sushi or rolls with this deal--no sashimi. On top of that, you have to eat the rice and the fish. I liked the sushi. As soon as I got to the rolls, either the law of diminishing returns hit me or the rolls just weren't that good. I will not specify at this time which it was, but I was unimpressed enough to probably not return. And this is not because the food was bad by any means, so I suggest you check it out, it just wasn't spectacular in any way to me. If you go on sushi Sunday expect long wait times. Not incredibly long, they were actually good about seating us relatively fast, but ordering and receiving our food took some time. All in all, I suggest eating the sushi and steering clear of the rolls, but I'm kind of a purist when it comes to fish, so go for what pleases your pallet... read more

All of the sushi I ordered tasted subpar. I definitely will never eat from here again. If you have ever eaten prepared sushi from a grocery store, and enjoyed it, then this is probably a place you would enjoy. I however found the rice to be weirdly textured. You know how when you buy cheap sushi (say from a grocery store) and the rice has that weird mushy/dry texture - like it has been sitting out all day? All of the rice was like that for all of the rolls including the Sake Sushi. Further more, I've had much better sushi from chain restaurants say Blue Sushi Sake Grill on 16th St. I ordered the Chicken Tempura Roll, Kobe Beef Roll, Avocado Sushi, Broccoli Sushi, California Roll, Spicy Crunch Yellowtail Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Alaska Roll, 2 Piece Sake Sushi. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, which the restaurant did a great job doing. They were cool with us all having separate checks, said checks were correct, they kept the birthday boy's cake ready which was delivered by his girlfriend earlier, and provided the most awesome cake decoration ever. This thing was shaped like a tulip and when the middle was lit, it went up in a glorious flame that caused the flower to open up and rotate with each petal having a candle that was lit. I probably had a childish look of amazement when they set this thing off. So cool. On to the sushi. I ordered the spicy crispy sushi combo, which comes with spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon rolls - a total of 24 pieces of sushi - plus a side of miso soup and simple salad with an Asian dressing. This was an incredible amount of food for only $15! The miso soup was the highlight to me, as it was packed with flavor. However, either the sushi or the soy sauce was insanely salty. I rarely, if ever, have food that is too salty for my handling, but I was grasping for water. Which was my other issue - I had to wave my glass to get more water, and I was quite parched by that point. All in all a good experience, with friendly and accommodating service that was a bit spotty at times. Although my sushi wasn't the greatest I've had, it was alright. Some of the fancier rolls others ordered looked really good. If I lived in the area I'd probably come by frequently, but wouldn't go out of my way to come here...unless I had a cake to put that crazy candle thingy on. Seriously, blew my mind. read more

I also prefer this place over the other Highlands sushi joint, Sushi Hai, which just seems to just really attract a bunch of yuppies. So I'm a bit of a sushi snob, and previously would only eat at Sushi Den here in Denver, but I was beyond pleasantly surprised to find that Sushi Bay's quality has often surpassed my more recent experiences at Sushi Den! (crazy I know). The fish at Sushi Bay is fresh and flavorful, more often than not, it's like butter aka amazing and delicious. Not only is the quality amazing, but the prices can't be beat! (Especially happy hour from 3-6 and then again 8-close everyday). What would normally cost us over $100 at Sushi Den only sets us back about $35 during happy hour!!! How can you not love that? Berkeley was already pretty high on the "hip-meter" with the best high-end Greek restaurant in Denver (AXIOS), along with one of the best places to enjoy a craft beer and artfull pizza (Hops & Pie), but now we have a great place for sushi. Sushi Bay is an unassuming little place with simple decor and soft-spoken wait staff. it's not until the food is delivered to your table that you realize how amazing this place is. Each plate is a work of art, each bite is a burst of flavor. I prefer sashimi to rolls and the raw tuna, salmon, snapper and squid did not disappoint. I have seen better but it was ok as where I used to order changed their delivery minimum. I'll like to say that the delivery process could be a bit smoother. You'll find the typical assortment of rolls made from spicy tuna, salmon skin, cream cheese, soft-shell crab, avocado, etc. We have not been disappointed. Our first visit the jalapeno yellow-tail was a standout appetizer. When ordered the second time it was doused in a sickly sweet sauce. The sashimi dinner is served in a large platter illuminated from the bottom with twinkling lights. It's like a rave under there! The quality of ingredients is good enough for what I'd describe as a "Chinese run Japanese Restaurant". Yes folks, that's Mandarin being spoken by the wait staff and the guys behind the sushi counter.
