I gave sushi 101 a four star rating. However, I would've gave it to 3.5 if it was allowed. The staff was very courteous and prompt. The food was fresh and tasted good. The price point was good. I would've gave it a higher rating however, the restaurant needs to be updated. There are torn seats. Painting needs to be done throughout. The bathroom needs to be updated. However, I do recommend eating here for good sushi. read more

Went here as a last minute dinner with my family and was pleasantly surprised. There weren't many other customers, and it was a Friday night, so if you're looking for a place with a short wait, this is the one! This place had some of the BEST fish to rice ratios I have ever seen. I ordered the Mt. Fuji Roll and a spicy tuna roll. Although the spicy tuna roll wasn't very spicy for me, the tuna was delicious and took up a generous chunk of the roll. Literally the best "basic" roll I have ever had, and I have eaten tons of sushi over the past decade. I'm not typically a fan of deep fried rolls due to the heavy breading, so the light breading on the Mt. Fuji roll was perfect. I will definitely be coming again. read more

I was very impressed by their Unagi ($2 for one piece). It was like butter. Sir Justin's Roll was quite unimpressive since all I could taste was crunchy tempura flakes in every bite (snow crab salad and crunchy tempura, topped with ahi poke, wasabi mayo, and wasabi tobiko, $12.95). First impressions are most significant and unfortunately it hit my nostrils immediately entering. I believe it's because of their fryer ventilation system is insufficient so the grease is in the air coating everything. This place needs professional cleaning everywhere, including the ceiling to get that nasty smell out. Reminds me of Cinebarre theater's smelly problem, too. But, after u sit at your table, the smell is not so overwhelming. Still, it really needs sanitation. Sushi rice prep is the key to great sushi. Unfortunately it wasn't prepared correctly but still edible. It seemed like the rice was yesterday's or just not professionally cooked. I had the chirashi rice which had nine sashimi pieces (three of each kind). The salmon sashimi was warm which was worrisome for it is raw. Fortunately I didn't get sick that night but still sashimi should be served cold, not warm like it must've bn laying out for a while. Usually shredded daikon tsuma (white radish) complements sashimi but this time it was served with shredded carrots which I suppose is the establishment's choice but I usually enjoy traditional daikon tsuma after the sashimi. My wife and I haven't been here in years. I hate to leave bad reviews because I know how detrimental bad reviews are to a business but the sushi is far less superior then anywhere else. They load up the rolls with rice and it doesn't even taste like the sushi rice is made correctly. Many of the rolls are made with imitation crab meat or have some kind of deep fried item in it. On one of my rolls it had deep fried shrimp and we asked if you could not deep fry and they said yea. I never thought that they would just skip the shrimp all together. Disclaimer: We got stuck behind an accident so we were almost 40 mins late to pick up our sushi That being said, the sushi maybe went bad sitting on the counter for so long before we consumed it. But the fish smelled and tasted off. We have done call in orders and picked up sushi later than it was supposed to be ready by before and we've never had an experience like this anywhere else. We really wanted to like this place especially since we spent $44 on only 2 special rolls & 2 basic rolls. I ordered calamari, maki 101 w salmon and the firecracker roll. The calamari was either cooked way too long or was freezer burned. Either way it was hard and rubbery w a burnt oil taste. Maki 101 was cooked thru to the point I've order plank salmon on a wood grill cooked less than my sushi was. And the fry on the rice for the firecracker was so hard it left pieces of the roof of my mouth hanging I have never experienced anything like this here and whoever fried food between 5:30 and 6 on June 27th needs some instruction. I was in the Ballantyne area so I stopped in here tonight based on the recommendations of my fellow yelpers. I was surprised at the quality of the food in this restaurant for being a strip center restaurant. I walked in the service was quick they offered me a full drink menu I ordered hot sake and immediately ordered a number of fresh sushi off the alla Carte menu. I also ordered a noodle bowl using the udon noodles and grilled shrimp. The food was outstanding and the flavors were better. The udon noodles with the broth was some of the best I've had throughout the country. If you were in this area and you were looking for fresh sushi and good Japanese cuisine I would highly recommend stopping at this facility. read more

This used to be my local sushi spot when I lived here in 2013. I order pretty basic things like a California Roll with cream cheese, a shrimp tempura roll and sometimes their roll with chicken in it. The sushi is always decent so my wife and I would go there almost every Sunday. I also really LOVED their Cajun Chicken Egg Rolls. I know, weird for a sushi place, but soooooo good - especially with their wasabi mayo/sauce. I even ran into WWE wrestler R-Truth on a random weeknight. After leaving Charlotte, I would come back and eat here no matter how out of the way it was. The server even remembered me as the "egg roll" guy a few years later. They would even let me take prepped but uncooked egg rolls back home on the plane. However, the last two times I came here the egg rolls were not the same. They seemed less crispy - almost stale, and the chicken was bland and missing that flavor I loved so much. Also the lady who was my server for years was gone. Since we just moved back I decided to give them another shot and went in on a Monday night. It was a little quiet, which was fine. The sushi was what I remember it to be - pretty decent, not on par with a super high end sushi place but fine. I ordered the egg rolls thinking this would be the last time I order them because I feared they changed the recipe. Much to my surprise and delight they were amazing - fresh and flavorful. Oh man. I don't know what happened to this place, but they've taken a bit of a freshness turn. They've always been my favorite (for over a decade) but the last time we went in, the spring rolls were so greasy and the ahi-tuna salad had BROWN avocados. I do wish they'd change the spicy tuna to be less about the MAYO and more about the spicy tuna inside - otherwise, the noodle bowls are quite tasty and continue to be a favorite for my 8-year old. We'll likely venture back in next year and I can only hope they get it together. DON'T GO!!! I saw the professional pictures of their food & wanted to try this place despite the average rating. I left very disappointed & hungry. I ordered a noodle bowl, with portobello mushrooms as my topping. Sugar was the first taste that hit me! My noodles were mushy, and there were next to no vegetables (onion, carrot, pepper, & green pieces so small that I have no idea what it was) in it at all. My server never checked once. When she came to ask if I wanted a to-go container, (since I hardly ate any). I said that I didn't because it was not good. She replied "Oh", and took the check with my charge card! Came here for date night with the hubs. Hostess wasn't very friendly at all. We got sat right away because they were super slow and she picked the worst table for us to sit at. Once we got to the table she slammed down the menus and walked off. Didn't even say anything. Our server was friendly and gave suggestions. My husband got a salad and although it was big, the core of the lettuce was in there as well as a lot of white lettuce. The sushi was good but it took a very long time considering how slow they were. We had the Dr. Vu, Lava , & spicy tuna roll. They were all exceptional. I seriously don't have a favorite. They were all perfect in a different way. Dessert was green tea ice cream. Always a fan of sushi, but the Sunday crew could have been the "B" team that we experienced. Even though it was a Sunday (early) around 5 or 6pm, we waited for a table and service was super slow. Good thing we had the time to kill and our server was nice enough. There was some confusion of how to split the check and she seemed to take forever with sliding our plastic forms of payment.... (only because she was correcting the splitting of the checks which was nice). Overall, it's a solid place to get sushi if you are in the area. I would not go out of my way to go to this Sushi 101. It's a bit tight with the receiving area right when you open the door - makes it a little awkward if you are waiting for a table. Personally I am a fan of the life-sized portrait of Gwen Stafani in the Sushi101 off of Park Rd and Woodlawn... but this one has some local art and R2D2 on the walls. Parking can get a bit crazy since the traffic flow around the restaurant is rather odd and the spaces are angled. A big plus is that Yoforia is right next door so it makes for a short stroll for dessert. read more

This has become a new go-to place for my wife and I. The noodle bowl with broth and steak is delicious. The flavors really come out. Can't come to a sushi place without getting some sushi. So, there's always a roll that's eaten. Last time we were there, one of the servers took the time to get down and help a teen learn how to use chopsticks.
