I cannot recommend this place enough! The food is so comforting, the drinks are on point, the staff is so sweet, and the decor makes me feel at home surrounded by all their plants! I tried them for the first time a week or two ago and got the dill, egg, and cream cheese Kolaches. It was so good I had to come back again today. The coffee is so smooth here. I really wanted to like this place but honestly that was the nastiest bagel sandwich I've ever had. I order the baked egg bagel and it was just soggy and overly sweet and just gross. I ordered delivery, and also ordered a blueberry muffin. I was not given a blueberry muffin, instead given some sad looking peach toast thing and a lemon bar...which makes no sense and I hate both peach and lemon so if they didn't have a blueberry muffin I wish they just told me that. Kolaches! Kolaches!! This place is a 6 minute walk from me and I am overjoyed I have a local coffee place within a short walking distance. Their iced lattes are always cold but never watered down by melted ice. Don't you just hate when that happens? They also have a great little food menu for breakfast/brunch. My daughter likes the millennial avocado toast with all the stuff on it. I love myself a Kolache! They have Jarritos Mexican sodas, in all the flavors, another favorite of mine! This is a really cute coffee shop with lots of plants, breakfast options, coffees and teas. I popped in and grabbed a tea and looked around for a bit. Everyone was really nice and there were a small, but decent amount of menu options. There's not a lot of seating, but it will do if you need to hop on your laptop for a minute to write a few emails. The service was great-- I loved the recommendations that I was given, especially since they had so many interesting dairy-free options to choose from. I wish masks were worn in general so that there isn't much transferring of bacteria on to the food while talking over it. Also a lot of the food was left open with not much covering it. It has taken me a while to write a review for this, my fav restaurant in the area. In fact this is my first review for yelp, but probably not my last. I've been a regular at a Surrounding Counties for a couple of years now. They always start my work day off right with amazing coffee (iced oat latte with their homemade rosemary brown sugar sea salt, extra shot espresso .... I know, it's a long name, but worth the effort!). The rosemary bagel from Chewy's is my usual go-to for a quick breakfast. But the fun part is discovering what sweet confections are just coming from the oven each day. It could be a cinnamon sticky bun, a to-die-for chocolate chip cookie, an apricot bar, or the latest fruity biscuit creation from the owner/baker/radical business man, Zach. Other favorite dishes include the egg and cheese (crispy on the edges) rosemary bagel and the Millennial toast, both with the works. Everything's better with the works, plus any other yummies that may be available! I love the way all the food is made from scratch, so I know what I'm eating is good for me....not like the fast food. I'm a busy person and it's nice to be able to get a variety of healthy foods all in one location. So I've talked about the food. Now let me touch on the atmosphere. It's a great place to hike up with the computer and get some work done or to just sit back and catch your breath. The variety of music played on vinyl is shocking ... in a good way! There is also an assortment of books to peruse, for all ages, including children. There is a little CD and 'zine library. Thanks to Surrounding Counties, I know what 'zines are! They have great artwork featured by at least 4 local artists. And lovely, earthy, handmade pottery is used for serving and can be purchased as well. Oh, yeah, and T-shirts too. Cool T-shirts! Finally, what keeps me coming back is the people. Zach has a knack for hiring the best people. From Anna and Rae (ladies first!) to Stan, Zzar, Jack, James, Tyler and an assortment of others, I always leave the store feeling just a smidge happier than when I entered. One more thing and then I'll close. Weekend mornings only they feature Sweet Shop donuts! My mom and I love these! So, if you're looking for fast food, go to a fast food restaurant. If you're looking for a relaxed and fun vibe with indoor and outdoor seating (it is a small shop), Surrounding Counties may be the perfect spot for you! read more

The food was ehhh the only good thing was they used chewy's bagels, but I could've prepared it better at home for way less money. A really cute little coffee shop! I read that the owner was a cofounder of Lamplighter in the city, and that totally makes sense with the vibe here. The place smells amazing, the coffee tastes great, and the food looks incredible. It's always got people at every table. My only qualm is that their decaf selection is limited. Most of their drinks are pre-made with full caffeine, so they can't really make you much half-caff decaf. This is less convenient for those who can't do full caffeine. But if you can, I recommend heading here! read more

Not only is the food here amazing (the strawberry biscuits are a must have) but the place makes you feel very at home. They always have a record playing and fun books and plants all over. My girlfriend absolutely loves the blueberry muffin. She promised she would leave me some of it for later when my fast is over I don't believe her the coffee is fantastic as well. This place was fantastic. The employees were super friendly, walking us through their offerings since we had never been in before. The coffee is great, the chai tea latte was nice and spicy, the fresh squeezed orange juice tastes like Florida, and our lox bagels were completely next level. They marinated cherry tomatoes, shallots, and capers in olive oil and herbs and topped the lox with that. We couldn't stop moaning while eating breakfast, which was more uncomfortable than we expected it to be. Went here on a rainy Monday morning for one purpose and one purpose only: to find some delicious kolaches. I am happy to report that I succeeded. My husband grew up on these, as he is of Czech heritage so we were excited to see this place is in Richmond and not Texas lol Oh and I have only tried sweet ones with fruit filling. He only had savory ones to choose from so I ordered 4; meatball Parm, muffuletta and the owner threw in a sausage and cheese one for me to try as well. All were super yummy and filling. Unique flavors stuffed into a deliciously baked bun, almost like a pocket of a really nice bun. I enjoyed them as did my husband. Honestly could've been 5 stars if it wasn't for the service of the girl at the counter. She cut me off when I was ordering and didn't let me finish what I was saying. 3 groups of people came in after us and got their drinks before us. We got our food before the drinks and had to remind them about our drinks. There was no vanilla syrup in my drink or cream which I would've been able to ask for if she didn't rush me through my order, mind you there was no one else in line. When I went up and got the syrup someone else got it for me, and said if I needed more to come back, so I did and the girl says make sure you ask for extra next time so we don't have to keep doing this back and forth. Honestly I would go back because the food was amazing but I just can't get with poor customer service when there's other coffee shops in Richmond that are just as good with more options. read more

Zach has opened a great little cafe serving Lamplighter coffee and some pretty amazing grit dishes, and delicious-looking baked treats (we didn't get to try them). I ordered the Traveling Eggs which came with three poached eggs, smoked salmon, arugula, pickled red onions, a dill spread and bread from Sub Rosa. It was absolutely delicious. The only thing I would change was that it was served in a to-go box. The interior of the restaurant - although small - is incredibly homey with a very eclectic and entertaining vibe.
