Finally got a chance to try this place out and it DID NOT disappoint! I got the classic fish tacos and my bf got their Cajun mahi mahi (fresh off the grill section of menu) and they were both super delicious and the fish was fresh and cooked perfectly. Staff were helpful and quick to accommodate any requests made by customers, something I both observed and experienced. The Resturant also was really open, had good natural light and seating was comfortable. I don't drink but they also had a good selection of beers and wine. Let's start with the positive. They have a happy hour and it's extremely popular. We came at 5 o'clock on a Saturday and the place was packed. My parents ordered shrimp and chips as well as fish and chips and seem to really enjoy it. Mom commented that the coleslaw was crunchy and cut thin just like she likes it. Fish had a nice beer batter and tasted fresh. Chips were long, thin and soft on the inside, which she also enjoys. Dad enjoyed his shrimp. Not overly battered and tasted fresh. Note to the servers, he asked for a soup spoon as his hands shake. It never arrived. As for me, I had the ahi poke bowl with crab meat and seaweed. Unfortunately, it seemed like a mishmash. Parts of it had heavy mayo some of it tasted salty and I'm not quite sure what they did with the sauce. I'm sure the Ahi must've been fresh, but not quite what I'm used to. It's a casual restaurant where you order and pay before you find a seat. There are 3 different types of oysters. All very fresh. Happy hour is $1.50/each. We also got ceviche. It doesn't have any shrimp, just white fish with a slice of avocado, chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro. It tastes refreshing with the chips. I ordered a Pokē bowl and clam chowder this time. The pokē bowl was fresh and delicious. My son felt the sauce was a little salty, so try not to just pour all of it onto the bowl. The clam chowder rivals my recipe lol. So good. Ambiance is nice and clean. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food to your table. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We kicked things off with fried calamari and poke nachos -- and wow, the poke nachos are officially our new family obsession (how did we live without these?!). For mains: hubby loved his Barramundi plate, kiddo #1 demolished the Cajun salmon burrito, kiddo #2 happily went to town on a poke bowl, and I thoroughly enjoyed my Cajun shrimp Cobb. The owner of Surfside is affiliated with Sea Surf in Del Mar Heights (see my review) which is wildly popular at Happy Hour - the menus are very similar. I'm going to touch mainly on the Happy Hour but I would definitely recommend the poke bowls and the cajun poboys (the fried oyster is deeeelish and hard to find anywhere in CA) and the garlic Brussels Sprouts which are amazing. Ok on to the HH - daily 3 to 6. $5 beers including crafts - space dust, society, lat 33, etc. They have the good stuff. Wines are $6 and sake $7. Each item was well portioned for the price. On this visit, the entire restaurant was filled with patrons enjoying the Happy Hour, I opted to order a few items of the Calamari, Chowder Fries and Poke Nachos. They got my poke ready within a few minutes. I ordered the OG Poke Bowl with Ahi Tuna and added on seaweed salad, spicy slaw, edamame and imitation crab. I'm not sure if the sauce was part of the slaw or they have a sauce with their rice but it was such a yummy combination. All the ingredients seemed to be really fresh. I would come here more often if it was close to my house. With all the additions, it was about $18 but it was huge and I was able to eat it for lunch and dinner. Happy Hour bites we chose: fresh shucked oysters (min. 3 per order, so honestly I lost track of how many times I ordered), poke nachos, classic fish tacos, chowder fries, shrimp tempura, and lemon pepper wings. I can honestly say this place is a hidden gem. Parking is super easy in a shopping center. Place is fairly clean and you order right when you get in at the cashier. Employees are super nice and helpful when it comes to explaining things on their menu or recommending things to try. Their happy hour is amazing. Highly recommend getting some fresh oysters (they have different kinds), the clam with chorizo butter, the calamari, the a classic fish taco (you can have it grilled or deep fried). The lemon pepper wings are a huge pass for me. Bland and dry. Spicy shrimp linguine was good but doesn't have me begging to come back again like the other menu items. The chowder fries were ok to me as well, I'd probably skip on these too. The most under rated menu item to me is the Seafood Cioppino. This was hands down best thing on the menu next to the fresh oysters. It's super filling, great price, and extremely delicious. While the happy hour deals are really good price wise, the options didn't excite my tastebuds. Ordered the poke nachos and didn't realize that the poke they use for it has imitation crab (which I'm not a fan of) and made all the poke have a very crabby taste to it. I found myself choking on the breading of the Fried Calamari, it was very grainy and I didn't find it to have the best flavor. Although the fish tacos were solid, both friend and grilled, they eat were stacked with too much cabbage slaw rather than a proportional balance of fish + slaw. I'll come back to try the other poke and main dishes, but I don't think the appetizers here are anything to tip your hat off to. Love that they have a covered outdoor patio, so you can bring your well behaved dog. And I especially like how you order at the cash register and then pick a seat. read more

This is my new favorite happy hour spot!! Amazingly affordable munchies, from fish tacos, chicken wings, guacamole and chips, poke nachos and of course the oysters!! It definitely gets busy during the happy hour time but it is not unmanageable, we've always been able to find seats easily and they have high chairs for kids which is convenient. Shishito Peppers: love em! I really find myself craving them! Fried shrimp: portion is huge but they are pretty tasteless. Also one time I took off the breeding and like every shrimp had poop veins.. it hasn't happened every time ... but it shows when the kitchen get lazy... ewww Oysters: what a deal! $1.50 each and they have several kinds to try. I have no idea why I like eating oysters, and at this price I don't need to dwell and can just do my thing! Poke nachos: pretty good! They do fluff up the poke with Krab stick... but I actually don't mind that. Fish tacos: pretty good... I've had both fried and grilled... definitely grab the hot sauce to ramp up the flavor. Ceviche: again a great option size although I did have to punch it up with a lot more lemon to really get that bright flavor ceviche is known for. Honestly it's a really great choice for happy hour and their regular menu has a lot of interesting options that are fairly priced. I came here during brunch time on a Saturday with a baby. Make sure you get here a little early as this gem does get packed quickly. The host was very kind and made sure we were comfortable. The vibe is relaxed casual. The decorations feels like a toned down sports bar with a slight hawaiian touch. We ordered the cioppino and the garlic ginger shrimp. The portions were very generous. The garlic ginger shrimp was tossed in a delicous sauce that was ginger forward which I like. The pickled cucumber salad added a nice contrast to the rich sweet/salty sauce in the shimp and rice. My co-residents and I were craving seafood after we had a super eventful Halloween. We wanted to stop by somewhere in San Diego and found this place. The interior was decorated super cute and reminded me of Spongebob! :D The servers were really attentive and noticed we were taking awhile to finish our food and offered to even keep it warm in the back for us. My co-resi and I got a little excited and ordered 5 things and split. It was also because everything just was so cheap, especially for seafood in this economy! I tried the seafood ciopinno, catfish and chips, raw oysters, fried calamari, and garlic parm fries. The oysters were definitely my favorite and were so fresh and sweet with lots of brine! I could have definitely eaten a few dozen if they didn't run my pockets dry. The fried calamari was crunchy and had the perfect amount of breading. I didn't love the ciopinno but it's hard to compare when I've been to restaurants in SF that are known for their ciopinno. This one was also much more affordable! I thought there wasn't anything extraordinary about the fish and chips and the fries, but they were crisp and the portions were HUGE for everything! I found out that there's happy hour at surfside from a Uber driver. It's everyday from 3-6pm. Menu can be found on their website. It was around 4pm and both kids just finished their games and wanted a snack. So we took them to surfside. We had 3 fish tacos($2 each), calamari ($7), garlic ginger wings ($7), and fried oysters. Food Quality - We ordered fried calamari, clams with chorizo butter, ginger and lemon pepper wings, southern fried oysters, and fish tacos (fried and grilled), and a dozen of three fresh oyster variants on shucked (half shell), maybe it would be easier to say what we didn't order, but it was a big group and this was the right place for us to land. My only regret is that we couldn't make room for the other items on the menu! - Everything was perfectly cooked and fresh. I do wish the tacos had a little more spice / flavor, but it was still terrific. They had a great portion of fresh fish, slaw and a nice tortilla. ZERO complaints, and will order again! - I will warn you, I don't know what is in the clams with chorizo butter, but it may be illegal. I haven't really seen that on the west coast, but it would be a great touch, unique and I think separate them EVEN further from the pack of great seafood establishment in the area. - The chicken wings were cooked exactly how I would like, but there was an even split between really good and "okay", I think that's more of a preference than a comment on the food quality and preference. Nobody was unhappy in any way. Service - The staff are amazing. Uber fast amazing, friendly, and motivated. I see quite a few of the same faces and I that, in my opinion is testament to good management. That gets reflected in the service quality and overall cleanliness. - The order and service process is fast, and efficient. You'll arrive at the counter, order, pay, grab a number and sit at an open table indoors or out. The machine is a little wonky and biases to tipping, which as there isn't really "service" at the tables I find a little frustrating. - The table was a little dirty and the floor too, but have some grace - PACKED. We asked for it be cleaned and quickly executed, no sweat, there were ZERO tables and they were doing their absolute best to get folks (like us) in, and the incumbent diners, fed and on the way by being great. Atmosphere - The decor is a really nice understated surfy - social - Baja style with great lighting and everything is typically very clean. - Sneak over before ordering and check out the raw bar. Its small, with limited options, but take that as a benefit as it ensures you get SUPER fresh seafood, no matter what it is. - There's plenty of seating, indoor and out and the line moves FAST, because of the amazing staff, so don't worry if there's a moderate line. The kitchen is ridiculously good, and we have had ZERO mistakes on orders no matter how big or how many people in our group. - If you have a big group of humans or just solo this place is ready, its also relatively quiet, no crazy loud music or distractions which is great (and peaceful) way to enjoy your meal. - There is a selection of local micro and major brews selected from in and around the area. Tacos are big (we like the fried fish ones) and so are the wings very flavorful. Cheap oysters and Chowder fries are ok but the chowder makes the fries soggy. Service is awesome where you order at the counter first and they bring out the good to you. Lots of hot sauce choices as well as plenty of parking which is shared with a cvs and Vons. We like to sit outside in the patio with the nice breeze. read more
