The place is very clean and good for lunch. My larger party of friends sat on the patio after ordering at the register and getting a number. Once the food is ready, they bring it to your table. Everyone working there is really nice and the food is great! I got the catfish and chips with slaw. I'm not used to cornmeal batter, but the catfish has a really clean flavor. Their coleslaw is the best. It's so refreshing and compliments the fried food so well. 5/5! I also got chips and guacamole and fried calamari. There is a tartar sauce and a ketchup based sauce for the seafood. I prefer the tartar sauce but I like how there are options. 5/5! All my friends said their food was great!! I've been to this restaurant a few times now, and every visit has been a good experience! You can either order takeout or dine in, which makes it a convenient spot for a casual meal. The fried calamari is always a highlight! It's juicy, crunchy, and delicious with all the sauces they provide: cocktail, ranch, tartar, and ketchup. The guacamole & chips are also a great appetizer to start with. The garlic fries are another favorite. It's super soft, flavorful, and addicting! As for the fish tacos, it's very tasty. The salsa goes very well with it! For the main entree, I've had the seafood boil with garlic butter, and I definitely prefer the garlic butter over the Louisiana Cajun sauce. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are a good size. Service is good, and they have a self-serve soda machine, along with Tabasco and ketchup available. THIS IS A GEM. I found this on Yelp (never lets me down) and went during happy hour! This location is sort of in a normal strip mall, I was actually disappointed when I rolled up. But as I was looking at the menu outside, a gentleman came by and said everything here was amazing. High praise. The inside is very standard of a strip mall restaurant, and very clean! They have an oyster freezer and everything. We ordered two happy hour deKa which was AMAZINGLY priced. Ceviche for 8 dollars?!?! Poke nachos for 9?!?! I had to get both, along with the fish and chips. We took a seat and food came out relatively fast. Let me tell you... Presentation A+, quality A+, prices A+!! The ceviche was so delicious and tender. The poke nachos were loaded to the brim with baby scallops, tuna, and crab! The fish and chips was also delicious, thing amazingly fried light fish with fries that rival that delicious salty McDonald's fry we all crave. Absolutely sublime. All that for 40 bucks. They have a great happy hour with great prices and good food! We went on a weeknight around 5:30pm, and it was pretty packed with a short wait to order at the register. We ordered the fish tacos, poke nachos, chowder fries, and clams with chorizo. Our favorites were the fish taco and poke nachos. The chowder fries were good, but the chowder seemed a bit too salty (same with the chorizo and tomato sauce). The portions were larger than I expected for happy hour which was nice. The oysters were fantastic and they had 3 different varieties available. I tried a ton of dishes here and unfortunately the only stand out were the raw oysters. They were delicious. But everything else had some sort of miss on execution. Fish and chips, the breading was falling off of the fish. It seemed like they are using frozen fish so all of the steam just separates the breading from the fish. It just felt soggy in between too. Clam Chowder was okay, a bit too thick and luke warm. Seafood chowder was also the same. Shrimp and chips were a bit better. Calamari were decent. We like coming to this restaurant after a round at Torrey Pines. This place is located on a strip mall in Del Mar and very convenient to get to coming from Torrey Pines. We've been in this restaurant several times and ordered variety on their venue and the food is so good, they never disappoint. The portion of a single entree is also large enough for two people and the prices just right. We've had their oysters too coming from another side of the country and it's ok. Let's start with the positive. They have a happy hour and it's extremely popular. We came at 5 o'clock on a Saturday and the place was packed. My parents ordered shrimp and chips as well as fish and chips and seem to really enjoy it. Mom commented that the coleslaw was crunchy and cut thin just like she likes it. Fish had a nice beer batter and tasted fresh. Chips were long, thin and soft on the inside, which she also enjoys. Dad enjoyed his shrimp. Not overly battered and tasted fresh. Note to the servers, he asked for a soup spoon as his hands shake. It never arrived. As for me, I had the ahi poke bowl with crab meat and seaweed. Unfortunately, it seemed like a mishmash. Parts of it had heavy mayo some of it tasted salty and I'm not quite sure what they did with the sauce. I'm sure the Ahi must've been fresh, but not quite what I'm used to. I think it was the crab meat that had bits of shell or something tough in it. Rice was not fully cooked. It's not something I would order again. The atmosphere was great. We kicked things off with fried calamari and poke nachos -- and wow, the poke nachos are officially our new family obsession (how did we live without these?!). For mains: hubby loved his Barramundi plate, kiddo #1 demolished the Cajun salmon burrito, kiddo #2 happily went to town on a poke bowl, and I thoroughly enjoyed my Cajun shrimp Cobb. The owner of Surfside is affiliated with Sea Surf in Del Mar Heights (see my review) which is wildly popular at Happy Hour - the menus are very similar. I'm going to touch mainly on the Happy Hour but I would definitely recommend the poke bowls and the cajun poboys (the fried oyster is deeeelish and hard to find anywhere in CA) and the garlic Brussels Sprouts which are amazing. Ok on to the HH - daily 3 to 6. $5 beers including crafts - space dust, society, lat 33, etc. They have the good stuff. Wines are $6 and sake $7. I ordered a Pokē bowl and clam chowder this time. The pokē bowl was fresh and delicious. My son felt the sauce was a little salty, so try not to just pour all of it onto the bowl. The clam chowder rivals my recipe lol. So good. Ambiance is nice and clean. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food to your table. Everyone was friendly and helpful. They got my poke ready within a few minutes. I ordered the OG Poke Bowl with Ahi Tuna and added on seaweed salad, spicy slaw, edamame and imitation crab. I'm not sure if the sauce was part of the slaw or they have a sauce with their rice but it was such a yummy combination. All the ingredients seemed to be really fresh. I would come here more often if it was close to my house. With all the additions, it was about $18 but it was huge and I was able to eat it for lunch and dinner. Ordered the poke nachos and didn't realize that the poke they use for it has imitation crab (which I'm not a fan of) and made all the poke have a very crabby taste to it. I found myself choking on the breading of the Fried Calamari, it was very grainy and I didn't find it to have the best flavor. Although the fish tacos were solid, both friend and grilled, they eat were stacked with too much cabbage slaw rather than a proportional balance of fish + slaw. I'll come back to try the other poke and main dishes, but I don't think the appetizers here are anything to tip your hat off to. Love that they have a covered outdoor patio, so you can bring your well behaved dog. And I especially like how you order at the cash register and then pick a seat. read more

Great happy hour selection and prices if you can make it here during that time frame. First time around we just missed it, but the second time we made it! (I made sure to get here at a good time, because on a Friday it can quickly get busy). Service is pretty good. The servers are on top of everything. I can honestly say this place is a hidden gem. Parking is super easy in a shopping center. Place is fairly clean and you order right when you get in at the cashier. Employees are super nice and helpful when it comes to explaining things on their menu or recommending things to try. Their happy hour is amazing. Highly recommend getting some fresh oysters (they have different kinds), the clam with chorizo butter, the calamari, the a classic fish taco (you can have it grilled or deep fried). The lemon pepper wings are a huge pass for me. Bland and dry. Spicy shrimp linguine was good but doesn't have me begging to come back again like the other menu items. The chowder fries were ok to me as well, I'd probably skip on these too. The most under rated menu item to me is the Seafood Cioppino. This was hands down best thing on the menu next to the fresh oysters. It's super filling, great price, and extremely delicious. They might have some misses on their menu that could be improved on, but they definitely have winners that make people come back. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is my new favorite happy hour spot!! Amazingly affordable munchies, from fish tacos, chicken wings, guacamole and chips, poke nachos and of course the oysters!! It definitely gets busy during the happy hour time but it is not unmanageable, we've always been able to find seats easily and they have high chairs for kids which is convenient. Shishito Peppers: love em! I really find myself craving them! Fried shrimp: portion is huge but they are pretty tasteless. Also one time I took off the breeding and like every shrimp had poop veins.. it hasn't happened every time ... but it shows when the kitchen get lazy... ewww Oysters: what a deal! $1.50 each and they have several kinds to try. I have no idea why I like eating oysters, and at this price I don't need to dwell and can just do my thing! Poke nachos: pretty good! They do fluff up the poke with Krab stick... but I actually don't mind that. Fish tacos: pretty good... I've had both fried and grilled... definitely grab the hot sauce to ramp up the flavor. Ceviche: again a great option size although I did have to punch it up with a lot more lemon to really get that bright flavor ceviche is known for. Honestly it's a really great choice for happy hour and their regular menu has a lot of interesting options that are fairly priced. I am recovery from surgery and craving Fish & Chips from Surfside Fish House so I placed an order for delivery. The food was prepared and delivered to me within 20 minutes of placing my order. Great service. Surfside Fish House has the greatest non-mayo based coleslaw. I am not sure if I enjoy the fish or the coleslaw the most. The only reason I don't give this restaurant five stars is because they must have the coleslaw sitting out in the kitchen. It's always served warm. I don't enjoy warm slaw so I always take it home, put it my fridge and eat it with another meal. Today my fish and coleslaw was separated by a piece of foil (great conductor of heat). My slaw was almost as warm as my fish. Please Surfside keep the slaw cold and serve it separate from the fish. It's so disappointing to have to wait a day or so to enjoy the your excellent slaw. I know you can do it. The tartar sauce and cocktail sauce are served in separate containers and not put in with the hot fish. Please do the same with the slaw. read more

Most of the plate was covered with tortilla chips. I'm not sure if they made it or bought them but the chips were not that good. Service was fast. There were not that many people the time I went.
