Finally got a chance to come by for happy hour! So many good things on the happy hour menu and wow the prices?? All under $10! We order almost everything! Order at the register and then find a seat! They will bring your food out. Lots of seating indoors and a few outdoor! Definitely will be back!

Fish and chips
Gwyn C.

Let's start with the positive. They have a happy hour and it's extremely popular. We came at 5 o'clock on a Saturday and the place was packed. My parents ordered shrimp and chips as well as fish and chips and seem to really enjoy it. Mom commented that the coleslaw was crunchy and cut thin just like she likes it. Fish had a nice beer batter and tasted fresh. Chips were long, thin and soft on the inside, which she also enjoys. Dad enjoyed his shrimp. Not overly battered and tasted fresh. Note to the servers, he asked for a soup spoon as his hands shake. It never arrived. As for me, I had the ahi poke bowl with crab meat and seaweed. Unfortunately, it seemed like a mishmash. Parts of it had heavy mayo some of it tasted salty and I'm not quite sure what they did with the sauce. I'm sure the Ahi must've been fresh, but not quite what I'm used to. I think it was the crab meat that had bits of shell or something tough in it. Rice was not fully cooked. It's not something I would order again. The atmosphere was great. Really enjoyed the outdoor patio seating. The person who took our order was very friendly. Not sure we would return despite great happy hour pricing as it's out of our way.

Classic Fish Tacos

Surfside Fish House is a hidden gem in Scripps Ranch. The fish is very fresh and tasty. The fish tacos are substantial, the batter is crispy and the taco is delicious. The black beans were tasteless. The fried catfish comes with two large fillets, coleslaw and French fries. A great tasting plate. Staff are helpful and efficient. We ordered our food to go and sat in the adjacent shared patio and enjoyed the beautiful spring day.

Happy hour March 2026

It's a casual restaurant where you order and pay before you find a seat. There are 3 different types of oysters. All very fresh. Happy hour is $1.50/each. We also got ceviche. It doesn't have any shrimp, just white fish with a slice of avocado, chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro. It tastes refreshing with the chips. The fried fish taco tastes better than the grilled fish taco. Something about the texture of the grilled fish doesn't have the same "umphf". I like that the green sauce isn't too spicy. We'll be back if we're in the area. Service is friendly and food comes out quick

Pokē bowl

I love Surfside Fish House. They have a wide selection of food. From poke to fried calamari and fish and chips to fish tacos, burritos, salads and soups. I ordered a Pokē bowl and clam chowder this time. The pokē bowl was fresh and delicious. My son felt the sauce was a little salty, so try not to just pour all of it onto the bowl. The clam chowder rivals my recipe lol. So good. Ambiance is nice and clean. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food to your table. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Overall, a great place for seafood and drinks. A complete win all around

OG Poke Bowl

Surfside Fish House hit it out of the park for our family! We kicked things off with fried calamari and poke nachos -- and wow, the poke nachos are officially our new family obsession (how did we live without these?!). For mains: hubby loved his Barramundi plate, kiddo #1 demolished the Cajun salmon burrito, kiddo #2 happily went to town on a poke bowl, and I thoroughly enjoyed my Cajun shrimp Cobb. Big bonus points for asking whether I wanted the shrimp with the tails on or off -- small detail, big appreciation. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and just plain satisfying. We're already plotting our next visit. Clean open and airy space with no fishy smell.

Happy hour 3-6 daily

This place is great! It's been a minute since I've been here but I'm glad to be back... The owner of Surfside is affiliated with Sea Surf in Del Mar Heights (see my review) which is wildly popular at Happy Hour - the menus are very similar. I'm going to touch mainly on the Happy Hour but I would definitely recommend the poke bowls and the cajun poboys (the fried oyster is deeeelish and hard to find anywhere in CA) and the garlic Brussels Sprouts which are amazing. Ok on to the HH - daily 3 to 6. $5 beers including crafts - space dust, society, lat 33, etc. They have the good stuff. Wines are $6 and sake $7. I posted a pic of the HH menu- Some of the stand outs are - ceviche (a good amount of fresh fish with chips) both styles of wings (ginger garlic & lemon pepper) Fried Oysters (the best) Fish Tacos $2 (grilled or fried) this is a good deal and here's one of my faves that Sea Surf doesnt have - Korean Chili Glazed Shishito Peppers (spicy sticky sweet roasted peppers) The service is personable and prompt. You really cant go wrong with anything here. 5 stars...

Surfside Fish House in Scripps Ranch has a great Happy Hour menu served from 3-6PM. Happy Hour menu items such as Ceviche, Calamari, Wings, Fish Taco and more. Each item was well portioned for the price. On this visit, the entire restaurant was filled with patrons enjoying the Happy Hour, I opted to order a few items of the Calamari, Chowder Fries and Poke Nachos. I really enjoyed the Poke Nachos with a good amount of poke and imitation crab. Chowder Fries was ok as its simply a bowl of fries with some chowder on top. The Calamari was good but was a little salty for my liking. Overall great first time experience, The Happy Hour was good and I would love to come back to try other items. Service was great with servers getting your food to you as quickly as they can.

OG Poke Bowl - with edamme, crab, seaweed salad, and slaw - so yummy
Kate F.

They got my poke ready within a few minutes. I ordered the OG Poke Bowl with Ahi Tuna and added on seaweed salad, spicy slaw, edamame and imitation crab. I'm not sure if the sauce was part of the slaw or they have a sauce with their rice but it was such a yummy combination. All the ingredients seemed to be really fresh. I would come here more often if it was close to my house. With all the additions, it was about $18 but it was huge and I was able to eat it for lunch and dinner. It's in a shopping center so plenty of easy parking and tons of tables inside

Chowder Fries, Poke Nachos, Chicken Wings
Joe D.

Checking in Surfside Fish House on a Friday evening and it was pretty busy. Tried the poke nachos, chowder fries, and chicken wings. Poke nachos fish tasted fresh but a friend noted that the chips used were not the same consistency from before? Chowder fries were actually my favorite. The chowder gravy was surprisingly delicious. Wings were simple but done right, just flavorful. The ambiance was very nautical combined with fine dine which we enjoyed. All of the items shown are their happy hour menu items. Next time I'm interested in trying their poke bowl options.

Oysters, guac and chips
Myrna G.

Daily happy hour alert! My fiance and I stopped by and it was a good deal. But get there early, they get busy! When we left there was a long line.

Line looks long but they only help one customer at a time. Counter is super close to the door.
Noriko C.

Great happy hour selection and prices if you can make it here during that time frame. First time around we just missed it, but the second time we made it! (I made sure to get here at a good time, because on a Friday it can quickly get busy). Service is pretty good. The servers are on top of everything. Happy Hour bites we chose: fresh shucked oysters (min. 3 per order, so honestly I lost track of how many times I ordered), poke nachos, classic fish tacos, chowder fries, shrimp tempura, and lemon pepper wings. We left the other half of the menu to try next time we come! Chowder fries were interesting, but our favorite was the fish tacos. Ordering is a little tight at the front and door is RIGHT there, so line leads outside no matter what. So weird set up, but the decor inside is lively and well done.

Lemon pepper wings
Jay B.

We just don't come here enough. The food is excellent. We come during happy hour. The poke nachos were delicious. The fish tacos were ok. We had both wings, ginger garlic and lemon pepper. Both were flavorful. It's packed during happy hour. They have about or 7 tables inside and a few outside.

You can tell when people actually care about the guest experience, and they absolutely do. Nate deserves a special shoutout for creating a Thai chili ginger soy sauce that genuinely blew my mind. I'm not exaggerating -- the balance of heat, sweetness, and umami was unreal. One of those flavors that makes you pause mid-bite and go, wow. It elevated everything it touched and is still living rent-free in my head. Dominic was equally incredible -- seamless service, great energy, and made the entire experience feel effortless and welcoming. Together, they made what could've been a normal meal into something truly memorable. If you're lucky enough to be taken care of by Dominic and Nate, you're in for an exceptional experience. This is the kind of service (and flavor) that keeps you coming back.

Unfortunately, the service completely ruined the experience. I placed my order online four hours in advance because I have a long drive back home to Julian and just wanted to pick it up and go. When I arrived, there was no greeting from staff, no clear pickup line, and no acknowledgment of customers waiting. The staff seemed to have tunnel vision, only focusing on what was directly in front of them while ignoring everyone else. After standing there for quite a while, I finally had to ask about my order. Instead of it being ready like it should have been, they hadn't even started making it. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes in line for something that was ordered hours earlier. What made it worse was when the mistake became obvious, no one apologized or acknowledged the inconvenience. The staff acted like it was no big deal and showed zero professionalism or accountability. I don't come into the city often, but when I do I like to try new places. Sadly, this experience was disappointing and the customer service was extremely poor. I would honestly say save your time and money and go somewhere that actually values their customers--especially in this economy. Time is money, and money is time. If a restaurant doesn't respect your time, they're definitely not going to respect your money. As for the food, it was very basic and lacked flavor. They were also very stingy with the sauce, which made the bowl even more dry and underwhelming. Overall, between the poor service, long wait despite ordering hours ahead, lack of accountability from staff, and mediocre food, this place was a big disappointment. I will not be coming back. There are plenty of better places that actually value their customers. Thank you and have a nice day.

I enjoyed the big, juicy pieces of shrimp and the mango slaw on top. Would definitely get this one again! We also shared the fish and chips - beer battered cod. I liked how the breading wasn't thick and it remained crispy!! Also, it didn't feel heavy or too oily at all. The fish inside was moist. The coleslaw that came with it was good too and it was a little sweet. I didn't like the tartar sauce that much and honestly didn't feel like the fish needed it because it already had good flavor. There was still a significant line, but when we finally got to the front, the waitress taking our order wouldn't even look at us. She spent a good portion of our "turn" chatting with another waitress before finally turning to us--still with zero eye contact. We ordered a cioppino, a clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, fish and chips, and a dozen oysters. I noticed she shouted the soup orders back to the kitchen but didn't say a word about the fish and chips. When I specifically asked her if she got the fish and chips, she said "yes," took my card, and sent us to a table. Our soups and oysters arrived after 15 minutes, but another 30 minutes passed with no sign of the rest of the meal. When I followed up with the same waitress to check on the status, she looked at the order and flatly told me there were no fish and chips on there. By that point, the restaurant was already closing. She asked if I still wanted them, but after waiting that long and dealing with that level of indifference, I just said no. Extremely disappointing experience. If you're going to stay open for customers, you should at least provide basic communication and hospitality. I won't be coming back.

Located in Gaslamp, street parking is your best bet. For most spots, you have to pay metered parking until 10 p.m. I was able to find an exception to the rule around 8:30 p.m. Ambiance (3/5): Werewolf is a pretty laid back bar. Which is right up my alley. This happened to be karaoke night. This may be an unpopular option but I'm not a fan of karaoke. If you are, you're golden. I would've enjoyed the ambiance a bit better on a standard night. We sat at a wooden booth in the back of the restaurant. Service (3/5): You order at the bar (both food and drinks). They were fairly busy on a Wednesday and only two bartenders were working. As a result, service was a bit slow. After placing my order, I closed out. Their cocktail list doesn't list prices. Not a fan of that. I asked the bartender how much some particular cocktails cost, and he didn't go. Not a good look. Drinks (4/5): Werewolf has an interesting list of craft cocktails. Plus a full bar. Just list your cocktail prices on the menu! Food (4.5/5): The food is surprisingly quite good. I went with the wings appetizer (and made them sticky for a dollar extra). Sweet with a little kick. The wings were fried just right with a crispy exterior and juicy inside. Finger-lickin' good! I also couldn't say no to papas balls lol. This appetizer is their version of hushpuppies. Taken to a higher level. Stuffed with mashed tater, bacon, cilantro, cotija, and drizzled with house sauce. Normally, papas balls would scare me, but these are scrumptious. The two appetizers combined were filling for a full meal.

That said, the waitress we had was very kind and attentive, and the food was decent, so we decided to give the place another try. After a long day at Legoland, we returned around 6pm and I had called ahead to make a reservation for four. The person on the phone took my name and number, so I assumed we were all set. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't even full, but no one greeted us for several minutes. Eventually, a waiter came over, and when I mentioned our reservation, he seemed confused and said they don't take reservations for parties under six. I tried to explain that someone had taken my information over the phone, but he interrupted me multiple times and didn't let me finish. He then walked over to another group behind us and asked if they were there first, even though we had arrived before them, which was frustrating. We were eventually told there was space available at the bar seating (bar stools) instead of a table. At that point, we were tired and hungry, so we accepted. Unfortunately, the service didn't improve. The waiter seemed rushed and disorganized--he couldn't remember our order and had to ask us which dish belonged to who when the food came out. As for the food, it was okay but not memorable. My ramen was just average--the pork was dry and the egg was overcooked. Overall, the food is decent, but the service really needs improvement. This particular waiter clearly needs more training, or possibly a different role, as the level of service did not meet basic expectations for a restaurant. Our second visit left a bad impression, especially since it was our last night in San Diego. Sadly, we won't be coming back.
