Happy hour, happy hour, happy hour! I think that I wouldn't come if not for happy hour prices! Don't get me wrong, most of what I ordered was fantastic. Happy hour is 2pm-7pm. They close at 8pm. Its a decent size restaurant with a small patio area. However, there are more seats in the common area outside. For this place, you order first then you grab a seat. They have canned soda or you can pay for the fountain soda drinks that actually don't have sodas. They have flavored drinks. I loved that they had a bottle of nigori for 8$ maybe 9$, I forget, but that is pretty much what you get it for at the store. Thats awesome! I got 10 oysters at 2$ each, but they are a mix. I loved the fried oysters! The calamari was great! My only disappointment was that the lemon pepper wings were so bland I regretted it. All the food on happy hour were 8-9$ only. Thats very cheap for seafood. The cashier and most of the food runners were very nice. They let me hang outside with my dogs for hours. I really enjoyed myself here. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is in the scripps ranch area! There is DAILY happy hour from 3-6! Although I have only ate from happy hour, I've had many friends come dine with me and eat from the normal menu which gives such a nice variety. For happy hour it includes both food and drinks. There is a variety for vegetarian, pescatarians, and even some chicken options for those who may not want seafood. The workers are always on top of it and food comes out so fast. The service is consistent and they truly do round over and clean the tables to make space and is very accommodating. My recommendation is of course to come during happy hour! Surfside Fish House is my favorite quality and affordable fish house. While visiting San Diego I knew I wanted to check them out. I came in for lunch with one other person on a Monday before hitting the road. It was difficult ordering because I wanted everything on the menu. We ended up getting a bunch of different items. My favorites we got included the salmon poke nachos, their classic fish taco (both grilled and fried), and clam chowder. I love that the salmon poke nachos had imitation crab and a nice sauce over it. The fish tacos were packed and had lots of flavor. Both grilled and fried were good and I love that you get the option. Their gumbo and calamari was cool but not a favorite. The gumbo was bland to us and the calamari was a little over fried but still good. We enjoyed our food and had left overs. The staff is really nice and was super helpful. The inside of this place is spacey and casual. They have extra hot sauce and other sauces out that you can grab. They also had a nice patio seating area where we sat with a dog. I do want to come back and try their other seafood items including their seafood boil. Was recommended to this place awhile back and finally tried it. The service was friendly and welcoming. I definitely appreciated how genuine it felt. I tried a ton of dishes here and unfortunately the only stand out were the raw oysters. They were delicious. But everything else had some sort of miss on execution. Fish and chips, the breading was falling off of the fish. It seemed like they are using frozen fish so all of the steam just separates the breading from the fish. It just felt soggy in between too. Clam Chowder was okay, a bit too thick and luke warm. Seafood chowder was also the same. Shrimp and chips were a bit better. Calamari were decent. Let's start with the positive. They have a happy hour and it's extremely popular. We came at 5 o'clock on a Saturday and the place was packed. My parents ordered shrimp and chips as well as fish and chips and seem to really enjoy it. Mom commented that the coleslaw was crunchy and cut thin just like she likes it. Fish had a nice beer batter and tasted fresh. Chips were long, thin and soft on the inside, which she also enjoys. Dad enjoyed his shrimp. Not overly battered and tasted fresh. Note to the servers, he asked for a soup spoon as his hands shake. It never arrived. As for me, I had the ahi poke bowl with crab meat and seaweed. Unfortunately, it seemed like a mishmash. Parts of it had heavy mayo some of it tasted salty and I'm not quite sure what they did with the sauce. I'm sure the Ahi must've been fresh, but not quite what I'm used to. I think it was the crab meat that had bits of shell or something tough in it. Rice was not fully cooked. It's not something I would order again. The atmosphere was great. The owner of Surfside is affiliated with Sea Surf in Del Mar Heights (see my review) which is wildly popular at Happy Hour - the menus are very similar. I ordered a Pokē bowl and clam chowder this time. The pokē bowl was fresh and delicious. My son felt the sauce was a little salty, so try not to just pour all of it onto the bowl. I found myself choking on the breading of the Fried Calamari, it was very grainy and I didn't find it to have the best flavor. Although the fish tacos were solid, both friend and grilled, they eat were stacked with too much cabbage slaw rather than a proportional balance of fish + slaw. I'll come back to try the other poke and main dishes, but I don't think the appetizers here are anything to tip your hat off to. I can honestly say this place is a hidden gem. Parking is super easy in a shopping center. Place is fairly clean and you order right when you get in at the cashier. The lemon pepper wings are a huge pass for me. Bland and dry. Spicy shrimp linguine was good but doesn't have me begging to come back again like the other menu items. The chowder fries were ok to me as well, I'd probably skip on these too. The most under rated menu item to me is the Seafood Cioppino. This was hands down best thing on the menu next to the fresh oysters. It's super filling, great price, and extremely delicious. I have no idea why I like eating oysters, and at this price I don't need to dwell and can just do my thing! Poke nachos: pretty good! They do fluff up the poke with Krab stick... but I actually don't mind that. Fish tacos: pretty good... I've had both fried and grilled... definitely grab the hot sauce to ramp up the flavor. Ceviche: again a great option size although I did have to punch it up with a lot more lemon to really get that bright flavor ceviche is known for.
