This is based on a recent cooking class. My two main disappointments are the cost of the class vs. what you leave with (physically), and the instructor. The cost is high ($69), and I literally only left with 4 pastries. It was beyond ridiculous. Also, the instructor was as dry as the sahara. She didn't have any personality, and was very unsure of herself. Now, granted, I have an immense amount of cooking and baking skills from self learning, but she didn't teach me anything that I couldn't do on my own or learn from watching TV. She didn't introduce herself, ask us about our skill level, or anything. Overall, I feel very ripped off for having paid so much for a sub par experience. I would definitely not recommend unless you are extremely brand new to being in a kitchen and learn best from a robot. read more

I love this store for their special classes. I just took one today for pizza making. It was small group, so I feel like a private tour! Teacher was very nice, fun! She took all my questions. Fun to make my own pizza. She also provide several pizza for the classroom. They also serve free coffee for the class. Now I can make my own pizza at home- very easy step. Seeing the chef and trying it out are the best way to learn to cook. Absolutely will go back for another class. read more

Had a great time today with my friends and our kids in a pasta making class. Holly was so accommodating and patient with our 3 year olds. They had snacks when we arrived and the kids loved eating their creations. They also loved seeing the people watching them from the windows. It was a great time and we can't wait to go back. My fiancé and I had such a blast taking the macaroon class at this location. Our instructor was fun and very thorough throughout the class. She carefully explained each step and gave us many tips on how to create the perfect macaroon. I loved that it was very hands on. We learned how to use the kitchen aid mixer, how to fold and pipette each macaroon. Not only did we get to take macaroons home, we took home the exact recipe we followed during the class. I happened into this location rather on accident, not realizing the other upscale housewares store in this mall had closed down. Sur la Table has a pretty wide selection of gadgets and fine cooking supplies crammed into their small place. The staff were friendly and knowledgable. I went in in search of vanilla bean paste and walked out with that plus a few discount hand towels. Their clearance section actually offered a lot of good stuff; it was hard to peel myself away for checkout. The cooking classes look like a good time too; can't wait to go back & try one out! read more

Decided to do some browsing and was pleasantly surprised by this store. Very friendly staff, nice selection, and lovely French music playing. On top of that, they have a Nespresso boutique and we were able to get some more capsules while enjoying an Espresso. read more

You can find every kitchen baking tool here on this store, located on the third floor of the indoor mall. Automatic can opener? Natural ketchup? You got it. Join the mailing list for amazing discounts. Clearance items and washroom are in the rear. Employees validate parking for $6. Took a noodles cooking class. Each person was in charge of a specific ingredient for each dish. You gain experience using some of their tools. Each person takes a turn to stir the food in the pot. I enjoyed the experience; however, other cooking classes are more hands-on than this approach. read more

All I can say is it's a fun place to shop. If you're a foodie like me you shouldn't go there, you'll see tons of things that you don't need but will want to buy! So go there with a budget in mind or you may end up spending a lot more than you intended! And the staff is super friendly and helpful. Stop in and have some fun you won't regret it. read more

My friend and I attended last night's "Tuscan Supper" class which went beyond our expectations! Chef Greg clearly loves cooking and sharing his love with people at various stages of culinary experience. He handled all of our questions with patience and humor! His support staff in Deborah and Patti were priceless, in making sure we were on point and in keeping our areas clean. Most of all, we learned practical tips and enjoyed a delicious, filling and easy to replicate, dinner and dessert. read more

Second time being in this store and was very happy with it. There were several employees in the store and we were greeted once, no biggie. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. We bought a couple pieces of Staub, and they were kind enough to hold everything for us as we went shopping in the area. There was nothing stellar or remarkable it was just a good overall experience. read more

You know how people would ask for funzies, "If you were given a million dollars, what would you do with it?" "Ummmm go crayyyy at Sur La Table!" would be my answer. Now, if I actually said that to a friend in person they'd probably respond two ways: "Huh? What's that?" or "WHY?!" Ummm because Sur La Table is awesome. That's why. Every time I'm in the mood to test my cooking/baking skills, I have to head to Sur La Table for some inspiration. There are so many little gadgets and fun contraptions for the kitchen fiend in me that I go wild. This is my culinary equivalent to J.Crew -- a place where I also am like a kid in a candy store. Now, I must admit, however, that while this is a chain, there are sometimes some snobby workers hanging around. This location, so far, has been generally friendly. I have come across a couple stuffy staffers (who don't greet you or ask for help), but I let it slide because I love Sur La Table too much to let their mediocre service ruin the thrills of going up and down every aisle. read more

I love Sur La table! I am a frequent visitor of the Naperville location since I live in that area, but we were staying in the city for a weekend and decided to take a cooking class. We did a seafood class and it was just us and one other couple, which made for a very intimate, hands-on class. I do wish that I remembered what the instructor's name was because he was excellent, but I think the wine got to me. They are located in the 900 shops and will let you bring in wine so that you can drink while you cook. We got a good amount of food to taste after the class. Not sure if that was because we were only 4 people, or if there would have been more if there were more participants. I do think it is a bit expensive, but it is nice that you get a discount on merchandise and at this location you get a deal on parking. I would really like to take another class in the future and probably will. read more

I know I seem to give pretty high marks to most places I review, But this place was a ton of fun. Our cooking class was part of a package deal with the Theatre in the Water Tower place that was showing a play about Julia Child. The Class was designed to add to the experience of seeing Mastering the Art. The class started with brief but effective knife skills demonstration which helped many of the people that had not used a knife in the kitchen and proceeded to preparing a wonderful champagne vinaigrette that dressed a goat cheese and spring greens salad. Then we went on to preparing Desert which was a lovely Chocolate, Grand Marnier souffle. Ever since i had one on a cruise i have loved souffle. The techniques that they demonstrated were perfect and our souffle was light and delicious. Our Main course was a filet of sole cooked with a brown butter and caper pan sauce. My son in law cooked the fish perfectly with a bit of instruction from our chef. Now we discuss the wonders of Duck Fat. I had no idea that it could lend such a wonderful flavor to potatoes. We roasted them in duck fat and butter. Delightful! A the end of the day the staff was very entertaining, friendly and helpful and the food we helped prepare was delicious. I want to do this again sometime! read more

This store is great. Everything seems nice. That fact gets a star. I'm rating the cooking class. I came for the Italian cooking class and was more than disappointed. It was like a cooking class for people that don't actually want to cook. First, they pushed their products non stop. I guess that's ok. Second, the meal prep was spread out literally amongst all members of the class--everyone did one prep thing yet no one did anything substantive. So for instance, I chopped the parsley, someone else chopped the onion, etc., and then the instructor did all the actual cooking and assembling. If you were lucky you could stir something, but most of the class was standing around watching the teachers or others. I literally only chopped parsley for the entire class (I got to do it twice!!). I was supposed to wrap asparagus in prosciutto, but they ran out of asparagus so I didn't even get to do that. At the end the food came out and there was not much to eat. We left having learnt minimal amounts about cooking (I now know how to chop parsley properly) and hungry. Thank goodness we figured out it was byob and had wine. read more

This is for the Nespresso boutique at Sur La Table at 900 North Michigan. Everytime I go in to the boutique Robert and Tina are always very friendly and knowledgable. They always offer a coffee, today they helped me with descaling my machine. Sometimes I buy more capsules, sometimes I just stop by for a coffee, either way they make it very comfortable for me to stop in and are there to help if I need it. This is a hidden little gem within the Sur La Table store at 900 North Michigan. read more

Sur Le Table. Went there for a coffee maker and left with a ton of kitchen tools and just fun, colorful household items. Love this place although it's too expensive to make a regular stop. Very fun to shop there, saw the most amazing hipster couple that looked like they were right out of a rockabilly band meets I Love Lucy. You think there's not going to be parking in that North Ave nightmare area but they have a nice garage tucked in back. Easy in and out like you would not expect. Anyway, broke but happy. read more

My husband and I took a cooking class at Sur La Table to celebrate his birthday. We were both looking forward to the experience, but it really wasn't as great as we thought it would be. The chef was knowledgeable, but the set up was not conducive to learning and observing. I had envisioned cooking each dish on our own. Instead, we all had to rotate chopping, searing, adding ingredients, so we never really got to learn how to make the whole dish by ourselves. Additionally, unless there is room at the stove, you can't really get yourself immersed in the class. You're pretty much isolated at a separate table trying to follow along by looking at the TV screen and/or reflective mirror they have facing the chef. There are also a lot of "helpers" in the room cleaning up, but they really got in the way and I found myself having to move and say, "excuse me" all night. It wasn't terrible, but I probably won't do it again. The food we cooked was pretty good. read more
