If there had been even the tiniest amount of customer service, there wouldn't be this Yelp review. I called the Michigan Ave. store around 4 on Wednesday, July 13th and spoke with the Manager, Durwood. I said that I had loaf pans that had rusted in the washing machine, even though the instructions said they were machine washable. Over the phone, he said he could give me a store credit. If he had said, "I am not sure what I can do without a receipt." or "Maybe I can help, but, there is no guarantee until I see the items.", I would have found the photo I took of the item when I bought it. From the start, his communication was misleading. I traveled an hour round trip to get to the store before closing and Durwood then told me he could only give me $1.99 per pan because they no longer carried that specific model. I did not have my phone with me, so, I had to rely on Durwood to help me locate proof of purchase. When I asked Durwood to help me locate proof of purchase in the system I realized that Durwood was not trying to help me in any way he could. He was in fact combative and hostile. He insisted there was no way he could look it up, which was blatantly false. After pushing him, he found my records, but, said he did not find the purchase. I stated that I didn't always give my email when I made a purchase and asked for him to look another way. He became agressive and just repeated that he could only give me $1.99 an item. I said this was very disappointing to me. I feel Sur la Table should stand behind their items. He said it was "normal wear and tear". I asked if it was normal for products to fall apart in less than a year? He kept insisting, with gritted teeth and barely suppressed rage that he could only give me $1.99. I said that $1.99 didn't do anything for me. At this point it was not even about the return or money or a credit. It was about a high end store not standing behind their product. Furthermore, it was also about a "buyer beware" attitude. If I expressed how upset I am, as a long standing customer, then I am treated with aggression. I repeated that I was disappointed in Sur la Table. I stated that I wanted to make my disappointment known to Durwood's boss. He said, "Fortunately, she quit. So, there is no one for you to complain to.". I thought that comment was out of line. I was disappointed, but, I had not become emotional and I was not taking it to a personal level. Durwood should have said, "Unfortunately, she is no longer with Sur la Table, so, there is no one else for you to speak with at this time.". His snide and uncalled for response was proof that he was a disgruntled employee who did not care about making customers happy. It was so utterly inappropriate. He smiled through gritted teeth (actually it was a sneer) and said, "You can talk to customer service.". At that point another employee showed up and tried to help and he shot down her suggestion and began talking about me under his breath to her. I said, "Durwood, please speak up so that I can hear what you are saying.". He was saying that the product was not falling apart and that I had purchased it more than a year ago. How would he know that with certainty? I don't always give my email with every purchase. And, rust all around the product makes it defective and unusable. He responded that he could give me the number for customer service. I asked him to give me his full name as well. He gave me the number and walked away without giving his name. I asked him for his last name and he mumbled a name, but, who knows if he was giving his real name. I said to the other sales person that Durwood could be a little nicer and I walked home feeling complete disgust with the way I was treated. At home, I found the photo of the item I took when I bought it. I had purchased 4 loaf pans at $12 each in late October 2021, 8 months ago. There is a limited lifetime warranty, which covers any defects in coating, material, or workmanship. The item number is 0003839785. It is so disappointing Durwood couldn't have done more or tried to do more or even tried to be nice. The items are clearly Sur la Table, the name is stamped on the pans. I hope customer service can actually treat me as a valued customer and not a hostile enemy. If not, Sur la Table doesn't need any more of my money. read more

This review is for the store itself and not for a class. So this store is located in the 900 North Michigan Ave Bloomingdales building on level 3. There is a parking garage attached to this building and with a parking ticket purchased online, it will cost you $12 for 3 hours and $16 for 6 hours OR a validated parking ticket will cost you $15 for 3 hours if you spend $10 or more at any of the stores in the building. The selection and various products that they sell are very overwhelming. There is just way too much in that store. I do love the Nespresso Café inside however I am not a fan of their service in the entire store. Sur La Table gets 2 stars for cleanliness and for product/item selection. I frequent this building and this store often as I am a coffee lover and I LOVE to cook but who else would walk into this store if they didn't right?! But every single time I walk into this store, the employees are always talking amongst each other or just busy walking around straightening items that already look straight. I never get acknowledged and I have been in this store a dozen or so times. Huge difference from the Oak Brook location. I miss going there. They were always so nice. But back to the Chicago location. My 3rd star goes to Sam who was the ONLY one to have ever acknowledged me, with a genuine smile I might add, on my most recent stroll in to the store and because of him, I made my 1st purchase there. I came here for a cooking class, learning to make macaroons. I had fun, the chefs were great, the macaroons were delicious, I think I can make them again on my own. Haha. Probably not. That's the beauty of the class. They are positive and informative so you feel macaroon invincible. The chef(s) didn't mind me bothering them with additional questions that they hadn't covered. They said they were available for questions if I get stuck while trying to make them on my own and so on. This is an awesome service. This location has validated parking that covered $15.00 of my $30.00 fee. This helps make the class more economical and this downtown local is great for sight seeing and hanging out for more shopping adventures. Try a classes at least once here. I've taken several at different Sur LA Table's and they are always nice. I didn't give five stars simply because the parking is so expensive. I went to Whole Foods and purchased all of the ingredients for the Steamed Dumplings and Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce that I learned how to make in the Thai Cooking Class! I used ground pork instead of chicken and added cilantro to the dipping sauce which is a nice twist...the dumplings came out amazingly delicious and I really have mastered the filling and folding process. I cooked them in the steamer part of my rice cooker which worked perfectly as it is set to the perfect timing automatically! Thank you Angela Kim for teaching me how to make this recipe which is my new "favorite" meal! FYI-the parchment paper in the steaming basket really is a valuable tip so they do not stick to the steaming slats! I also use it to wrap the dumplings in containers in the fridge. read more

This review is for the cooking classes and not the store. Don't get me wrong. The store is great. Like a bookstore, I could spend time wandering around looking at every little thing. I've gotten mostly baking stuff here and maybe a kitchen utensil or two. So yeah, the store is great. Back when this store used to be on Oak Street, I took a holiday pie making class on a work function. To this day, I still bake one of the pies (pecan) I learned back then because it's still one of my mom's favorite (and mine, of course). Anyway... a few months ago, I was checking out the Sur La Table's website looking for some baking decorations, when I noticed the link to cooking classes. Since I enjoyed that class I took back then, I decided to take another one. Plus, if you've read about my laziness, I need to up my cooking skills game. If you're looking at the calendars, class descriptions are available which is helpful and then you can get a general idea of the menu and what to expect. I've taken a couple classes recently and have enjoyed each one. Class sizes are small (I think, at most, 8 people/class) so that everyone can participate. That's what I liked about these classes. You can be hands on as much as you want. And then you get to eat at the end what you made. You also get a packet with the recipes from that class. Notes: - Keep the phones in your pocket/purse. I'm pretty sure those pop-up notifications and that damn Pokemon game can wait. It's not only rude to the instructor but to the rest of attendees. You do get a 10 minute break during the class. So there. - They have classes available for families, kids and teens, if you wanted to keep them occupied during the summer. There are classes for date night and even a girls' night out. - You can gift a class too, which would make excellent holiday or birthday presents. - I think you have up to 48 hours prior to cancel. - A 10% discount is offered to use on your next class. You don't have to sign up that same day though. - Definitely dress comfortably. You'll be on your feet for most of the class. read more

I've been to a lot of cooking classes around the world (Iceland, Italy, and across the U.S.), including classes at Sur La Table locations in other states, and the croissant class I took today at the Chicago location was one of the best. The store is located on the third floor of the shopping mall at 900 Michigan Ave, directly across the street from the Hancock Building. Morning classes start before the store is actually open, so the door will probably be locked when you walk up. Just knock or wave through the window to get a chef's attention. They provided fancy Nespresso coffee creations (the store is a special sales location for Nespresso), cheese and crackers, water, and of course, samples of the croissants we made throughout class. Chef Adam and Maria (chef in training) provided the perfect level of instruction for an hands on class. They let us get messy and do the work ourselves, but provided enough demonstration and correction that we did the work *correctly* ourselves. The chef instructors were assisted by two class assistants, and considering there were just 12 people in our class, we felt very attended to with a 1:3 instructor to student ratio. Over three hours, we worked in groups of four and made plain, ham & gruyere, and chocolate croissants from scratch. Because this was a baking class, they also sent us home with boxes of the three types of croissants we made. We each got to take home about two of each variety we made. I appreciated that they labeled our sheetpans by our group number, so that we were able to take home the actual croissants we made. Like most cooking classes, they offered us a 10% off coupon for anything we purchased in the store that day. But new to me was an offer for 20% off any cooking class we signed up for in the future on that day. That's quite the deal! I found the prices of the cooking classes quite reasonable. The croissant class I took was only $59, and the other cooking classes, including full meals, didn't go over $79. This is very reasonable, given the location and the quality of instruction. Fun! We learned several nice techniques for cooking artisan pizza! The instructor- Maria was terrific and kept control of the class. Several participants arrive late and Maria was great about not holding us all up to catch up the new arrivals- they blended in nicely after a bit. Staff is washing dishes as the class moves along, pizza gets made and baked as Maria instructs. Great lunch of your own creation! excellent class! read more

I booked the Italian favorites which consisted of a lemon arugula salad, pesto gnocchi, a steak and it finished with mint gelato. During the class, they didn't do the last course and when we inquired, he just said it wasn't in his list. I emailed multiple times without response and when I finally got one, they asked for a copy of the itinerary I was referencing. I went to the website and they CHANGED it after the fact. Thank you to Sur La Table for accommodating our staff outing on such short notice with a group of 7! We did the Spring Pasta Workshop with Adam and it was phenomenal. I will not give too many details of the class because if you're reading this, you should sign up now! It's on the pricey side of things but it's definitely worth it. Adam is a great and patient instructor, I was not expecting to get so much out of the class and I did! The only downside is that you can't take your food to go, but it is BYOB (not advertised please call the store to confirm). The store itself is very nice as well, there are tons of Breville, LeCreuset, Kitchenaid products but there are also just your basic kitchen household items that are priced at a normal rate. read more

What is wrong with this company/Store?! My husband and I received a grill set (tongs, flipper, etc) and a fish grill pan as a gift from a family member. Unfortunately, we already own 2 grill sets and a fish grill pan so we returned this to the store for credit. Ideally, so we could buy something we don't have. The store immediately notified our family member that we did a return of their gift---why was this necessary? Extremely bad customer service! We didn't give our permission for this and I would have at least given our family a heads up if Sur La Table was going to notify them. You pay a fraction of the cost for the exact same items at various department stores and they don't penalize you when you return an item. Won't be shopping be shopping at Sur La Table anymore because they lack common sense....ridiculous! read more

The class was very professional and overall we had a good experience. Our instructor did not exhibit much energy or enthusiasm, for that reason I have to only offer 3 stars. Quick review: great experience, delicious food, learned a few valuable skills. Long review: I was at Sur La Table earlier this month and had an amazing experience. My girlfriend and I opted for the "10 cooking skills for the New Year" and while I don't know how many skills I actually picked up, the entire class was amazing. I can't remember everything we cooked or many of the details but what I will say is that everyone in the class overwhelmingly enjoyed it! I am a beginner cook in every sense of the word (I can barely make myself a sandwich) while the people we were partnered with were basically experts - usually this type of dichotomy would spell disaster but the meals and steps were simple enough for me to understand while also valuable for the experts we were partnered with to also learn something new. The food was AMAZING! I hate using caps in these reviews but that's the only way to describe it. We made a few different courses: arugula salad, chicken with risotto, and a salted caramel and chocolate pie. Everything tasted incredible due to the guidance and expertise we received from the chef teaching the class and the other chefs helping us out individually. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough! Definitely will be back in the future for another class! read more

I came here for a cooking class with my team from work. It was a blast. The chef is really nice and patient. I thought they did a really nice job of having us do the majority of the work but taking cake of certain parts of the meal that required a more trained eye. Recently a group of friends decided to get together (haven't seen one another all together since highschool) and we thought how fun would it be to take a cooking class together! I've never taken a cooking class before so I was super excited to give this a go! The instructor Vanessa was so sweet & so fun! What was great was that the class was focused on learning how to use a cast iron skillet (which I have but never used since it always intimidated me!). We made a yummy chicken dish, with potatoes & the most amazing skillet cookie! The class was small, we had about 14 attendees, which 5 of us were our group, everyone was super friendly & it was a great way to spend the afternoon. After cooking our meals each of us got a good size portion, so lunch was included. Also with the class you get a nice coupon to use at Sur La Table after class & trust me there's an insane amount of cool stuff you just need to have in your kitchen after browsing the store. I definitely would recommend a date night here for sure or another girls/moms night out, it's fun, interactive, you learn something, & you get a good meal out of it too! We decided to have a girls' night at this place. First off, we did not get to cook anything at all. All we did was chop a few veggies and then watched the chef cook the rest of the food. Also, for $75 all we got was a small piece of meat, polenta, which was pretty terrible and a small portion of arugula salad. Oh, and a small desert. We walked out of there and went to cheesecake factory, because we were so hungry and we are not big eaters. For all things kitchen & dining-related, there is Sur La Table. This particular location has some of the most coveted and unique kitchen gadgets, dishes and decorative accents I've found at any store yet. Yes, it's expensive, but shopping at Sur La Table is more an experience. It's an indulgence we all should experience. Even their cloth napkins are kinds pricey and everything else just goes up in price from there (there's no way you can get out of this store if you buy something without dropping a chunk of change) but I like to refer to Sur La Table as "event shopping, a once in a lifetime thing" for most average Joes. For culinary types, this place is the kitchen equivalent of a kid walking into a candy store, no joke. Everything they sell is beautiful and they do offer a fairly wide range of price points to suit everyone's pocketbook. I like their dishes and glassware, everything else is just too damn expensive. Make it a point to stop in here and pick up something cool for your kitchen. Great customer service is a hallmark of Sur La Table in general, and this store lives up to that and much more. After searching fruitlessly around the city for replacement wine glasses, I finally found what I was looking for at my last stop of the day - Sur La Table. Even though I'm a denizen of the 900 North Shops, I hadn't ventured into this store until this past weekend. I don't consider myself a serious chef and most of the time I am able to find what I need at Bloomingdale's Home and T.J. Maxx/Marshalls. When I entered the store I was greeted with an expansive selection of cookware. Thanks to a helpful salesperson making the rounds, I was able to locate the wine glasses and accessories on a back wall. The wire shelving racks in here always make me feel like a bull in a china shop, but I was careful and managed not to break anything during my looking around. The glasses were on sale (!) and I even scored a S'well water bottle in brushed gold. I noted that this store also sells rubberized wine bottle stoppers, which are not always readily available, and for which I know I'll be back. Being able to score bargains, and finding what I wanted, right when I wanted it, is priceless in my book. read more

Ordered a $180 knife on 12/14. Got a notice that it was delayed, though would be shipped 12/21. I called several days, spoke to Luis each time and he kept promising delivery. When I still didn't receive any notifications, I called today 12/24, and was told that he had no idea when it would be shipped, it could be 14 days at least, it was coming from one of their vendors and he had no way to find out when it would be shipped. I attended a Knife Skills 101 class with my wife. We left extremely disappointed. First off, the instructor did not really check anyone's cutting techniques and seemed in a rush the entire time. It is very clear that the class serves primarily to make stock to be used for other classes. This was made abundantly clear when we spent the majority of the time practicing the same cut on various types of vegetables so they could have a range for their stock. Even this would not have seemed so bad had we at least gotten a small jar of the stock to take home. The snack provides ends up being a cracker or two and some cheese. We spent most of the time using only a chef's knife, and used a paring knife at the very end. In a class that's supposed to teach you the basics, this seems like a tremendous oversight. Besides not getting a chance to use any other knives, there was a very limited discussion on when you should be using other knifes. New couples trying to make sure they are using their brand new knife set properly should look elsewhere, you could learn as much from a 5 minute YouTube video as we did in this class. There are much better cooking classes elsewhere in Chicago, in particular Cooking Fools provides more hands on learning in a fun environment where you get large portions of everything you make, along with the recipes. read more

The duchess of this location is here you commoners and here's what's what people about this particular one. I love this location.. They are always so sweet and super helpful and may I add, hilarious. Always offering an espresso or cappuccino when I walk in. I'd love to partake but I usually come in late so I have to be a good girl and decline. Which I also love that they don't get pissy and passive aggressive with me that I stop in kinda late due to working long hours during the weekdays. Sometimes you really need a bottle stop TONIGHT cuz the one that came with the bottle just won't do anymore. I'm a quick shopper though unless I'm killing time, I go in for what I need usually and bounce. They have a great infused oil selection and got some good info/tips from a recent purchase of some truffle oil I've been looking for everywhere. (Whole food's on Huron isn't great for that...) Big plus is that they are one of the few stores in this mall open past 7pm on a weekday.. The others are JCrew and Club Monaco among 2-3 others. Lame, lots of places close at 7pm on MIchigan ave on weekdays FYI -- granny hours I tell you! You're the bestest Sur la table, for my paper straws, bottle stops, pot holders, truffle oil, cake stands, etc. kitchen ware needs. Love. I could spend over an hour in here. While lululemon next door snoozes cuz they're a bunch of grannies that close early. Customer service lessons can be learned here and at AllSaints on Michigan avenue... People care at these locations and they're charming with a dash of passion, making the experience enjoyable unlike some posers out there that are so bored at their jobs- I'm looking at you Lyfe Kitchen with your indifferent shrugs only a lazy bum could love. read more

I have attended 10 different cooking schools in the United States, Chile, Spain, and Thailand. This is probably the worst school that I have attended. In winter of 2015, I took the "Date Night' New Year's Eve Celebration" class with Chef Milo Klos (the class was half off). Here, we made steak diane, truffled mashed potatoes, belini, and dark chocolate souffle. As someone else stated, the class was not conducive to learning or observing. The majority of my time was spent chopping the ingredients. The class was very large. I don't know how many people attended, but it must have been anywhere from 10 to 20 students. Because the class was so large, I didn't get to cook the food. As someone else stated, you are isolated at a separate table trying to follow along by looking at the reflective mirror they have facing the chef. While the steak diane was good and has become a main stay in my kitchen, the truffled mashed potatoes were medicore and the belini's were not that great as well. All in all, I certainly don't plan on attending another class and certainly not at full-price. read more

Thanks to Sur La Table I am a macaron making master! My friend and I signed up for the fall French macaron baking class and learned a lot. Macarons are such finicky pastries to make, but with the instruction and assistance of the chefs, we were able to make decent macarons with ease. The true test was when I took the instruction booklet they gave us and made my own at home - success! Not to say that I will never purchase another macaron again, but I can actually make some that are comparable to ones from bakeries. The class was well organized and the chefs (and assistants) were cheerful and pleasant to work with. I had such a good experience, I would take another cooking class (if the classes were less expensive I would take them more often - maybe they should have a 3-pack pass....get a discount for signing up for multiple classes?). If you are a first time cook/baker or more experienced, these class are great since they taught us technique and it was easy to follow along since they have huge TVs projecting each step too. Took the pasta making class. The class turned out to be different than what I had in my mind. I thought that we would make the dough out of flower using egg, and constantly kneading. Instead the dough was pre-made, the instructor went through a small lesson on how to combine flower and egg in a mixer and let the machine blend the ingredients together to make dough. We then proceeded to combine a few ingredients and heat them up in a pan to make a red sauce. After, we again turned our attention to the instructor and watched her make the pesto. Once this was done, we took the pre-made dough, and put it through the dough roller to flatten into noodles. We then cut the noodles and made some bow-tie pasta, and left half as straight noodles. The instructors cooked the noodles while we shopped, and we came back to plates full of finished pasta. The instructor also made some additions to the pesto without telling us what they were or how it was done (only noticeable ingredient was goat cheese). All in all, good experience, fun date night. However, being a pasta making class I was really hoping we got to learn how to make the dough by hand as that would make for an awesome learning experience, and fun date-night. But I do realize this would take a lot of time, especially with the time it takes to allow the dough to settle out. I was also disappointed that we didn't get to make the pesto hands on. That being said, the instructors really knowledgeable, great at presenting the information, and the class was still fun. I would say however that you'd get the same experience watching the food network, watching a youtube video, or simply following a recipe. It was basically just someone reading a recipe aloud. From a learning cooking techniques, etc, I'd say I wouldn't do it again. From a fun date night experience, I'd say that I'd definitely do it again. Just depends what you're looking for. read more

Absolutely fantastic store! I cannot wait to purchase my new stand mixer, cutlery, cookware set, and enroll in some cooking classes. I was bored in the 900 Michigan shops so I just stopped in to see what the store was about. I was in heaven as I love cooking. The prices are expected for the quality items, and I think its past time I ditch my walmart cookware and splurge for lifelong products. The staff here are awesome too! They do not hover, but they are accessible. Just great! read more
