Service is super, staff all seem very happy to be working there and it genuinely feels like they want to assist their customers. I've tasted a few items on the menu, but like many people go back for the veggie burger (and fries). I have a love hate relationship with veggie burgers, since so often they taste like faux-burgers. This one satisfies, since they aren't trying to make a fake burger but an excellent veggie burger (made with quinoa, chickpeas, assorted other ingredients) which holds together and feels like eating a 'real' meat burger. Properly proportioned to the bun (so the bun doesn't dwarf the burger or vice versa) topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato confit, pickles, and sauce. And there is almost no way to get the burger and not the fries. It's a bit overpriced for what it is, but it delights everyone I've been here with and it appears they plan to keep doing do. I've long been a fan of Superiority Burger, starting at their other smaller location on East 9th and now at their spot in the old Odessa Diner space. Favorites include the namesake Superiority Burger (with their excellently seasoned and fried French Fries), also love the TFT Fried Tofu Sandwich, and the Bean side dish. We came here super last minute after a comedy show with a big group and got there around 10:45 PM. Just a heads up, their kitchen does last call at 11:30 PM. The place was packed but honestly they handled it pretty well and were able to split us up and get us seated not too long after. I got the OG Superiority burger (it has walnuts which we learned that the hard way because my husband's allergic) so he switched to the collard greens sandwich for him. My burger was actually really good, like 8/10. I genuinely couldn't believe it was vegan. My husband liked his collard greens sandwich and gave it a 7/10. I tried it too and it was good, just not really my thing. But my friends, the fries are perfectly crispy! My friends had hyped this place up a lot, but they felt like it wasn't as consistent this time. This spot was easily in the Top 3 meals I had on my last trip to NYC! I still can't figure out how a vegan place can taste this good, but seriously, everything was absolutely amazing. The worst tofu sandwich I ever had was at summer camp: an impromptu slab of grilled tofu slathered with mustard over a bun, prepared when I told the inexperienced chef that I was vegetarian. The tofu sandwich at Superiority Burger is certainly an improvement, but it still does employ mustard. After undergoing a lengthy marination, the briney tofu is deep fried to give the texture of a chicken sandwich. It's a hefty, decadent affair, although I wish just a bit of the tofu's naturally soft texture had been preserved in the cutlet's interior. Ordered: House salad for two ($19)- this salad was quite large! In fact it was more salad than the two of us wanted and we love salad! It was enjoyable for sure. It was one of the better vegetarian burgers I've had for sure! However it was small! I would have ordered a second if it wasn't so pricey. The fries were also delicious. Date shake ($14)- I wasn't sure what I was expecting but the date shake was different, in a positive way! It's vegan. It tasted like coconut with nice small pieces of date to bite into along the way plus a hint of orange zest. Fancy dessert ($17)- I don't know what I was expecting, but this didn't strike me as fancy... it was a square of chocolate cake with a small scoop of ice cream, whipped marshmallow, hot fudge and whipped cream. It was an enjoyable vegan dessert but wasn't memorable or special in my view. Next time I'll try the pearl pie. Overall, my first visit to Superiority Burger was enjoyable and I likely would return! As others have noted, SB is overpriced for the portion size. Perhaps it's their contribution to reducing food waste? The Pietraburger was pretty boring taste wise. I never really cared for the famous vegetarian burger that Superiority Burger is named for, but I spent years going to their tiny takeout window on 9th Street. I couldn't resist their TFT (tofu fried tofu) sandwich and that incredible charred broccoli salad. Chef/owner Brooks Headley would always create something amazing from whatever he found at the local greenmarket. We all knew he could work magic in the kitchen, even though he barely had any space to work with. When I heard they were moving into the old Odessa Diner space with a real kitchen, I couldn't wait to see what they'd do. I've been there quite a bit now - for brunch, dinner, and plenty of dessert runs. The food is good, but the desserts are really what keep me coming back. I loved the waffle with guava butter, and they make this wonderful collard greens sandwich on the most delicious focaccia bread. Some things weren't quite as exciting - the lentils with cornbread didn't do much for me, and the Sloppy Dave was forgettable. The TFT is still perfect though. I wouldn't bother with the house-made soda. The desserts are really something special. I regularly buy their ice cream by the pint. The labne flavor is my favorite. It's creamy and tart in all the right ways. I tried their pandan box pie and raspberry tart too, and they were both incredible. I keep finding reasons to go back for more. This was a wonderful and surprising experience. Honestly, the best vegan food I have ever tasted. I am not vegan but I like to try alternatives to meat and dairy. This restaurant gives a diner feel on the inside. Reminds me of my favorite diner spots in New Jersey. They have a regular menu and then specials that change on a daily basis. I recommend following their instagram because you will see the new menu options they serve. They post all the time. They typically have their cheesy bread which tastes exactly like dairy cheesy bread, I was very impressed. Sad to report, but the place has lost some ( or all ) of the magic that it once had at the old location. I don't get the super inflated prices ( $27 for the yuba Verde sandwich), the fries were good but almost too burnt ( $10), the TFT sandwich is not what it used to be ( $22), the burnt broccoli salad used to be $4 at the old location and now it's $15. WOW. But I get it, everything is expensive these days but the old SB built its name on innovation and affordability. I went on a Sunday in April around lunch time recently and for some reason the place looked and felt sad. The waiters were low energy, not as friendly, took a while to take my order, took a while to pay, it wasn't even half full. Having had Superiority Burger on our radars for a little while now, we walked in on a beautiful Saturday night and were surprisingly seated immediately. It was actually not too busy at all, especially for dinnertime on a Saturday, which gave me pause, but thankfully it only worked in our favor. The vibes are great. The interior is eclectic and really does feel like a diner, despite the music and menu straying far from a standard diner experience. There are only a few sandwiches on the menu, so we all tried something different. They were fantastic! The tofu in the TFT was crisped up perfectly; the superiority burger had a nice combination of flavors, and was as good as advertised; and the collard greens sandwich was a revelation. The focaccia they use for it is massive, and the collard greens and cooper sharp cheese combo was brilliant. The fries were excellent, too: thick, but light and crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. Where Superiority Burger falters, unfortunately, is their prices. Seeing pictures of old menus and reviews from years past, it's obvious that they've completely jacked them up in the last couple years. No matter how good, sandwiches in a laid back diner setting should not range from $20 to $27, and an extra side of fries should not be 10 whole U.S. dollars. I had an amazing experience at the Superiority Burger! The burger itself was absolutely delicious - one of the best vegan burgers I've ever had. I also enjoyed the sweet potato dish, and my husband's salad looked very good as well. I went with a group for lunch at noon on a Thursday, and the place was not too full. It feels like a deli setting, but everything is vegan, which is a great concept. Service was friendly, and they were very attentive to my husband's allergies. Unfortunately, they had issues with my husband's mushroom allergy, since they said there were mushrooms all over the kitchen so it would be difficult to avoid cross-contamination overall but especially in the cooked food. He had no issues with the salad, so I thought maybe they were also just being extra careful with the allergy as well by telling him to avoid the cooked foods. A fan of Superiority Burger back when it was a tiny, casual restaurant with a smaller and less expensive menu, I was excited to finally eat at the larger, fancier Superiority Burger. We ordered the superiority burger with hash browns (instead of cauliflower), the yuba-verde, and gelato. Of the three sandwiches, my favorite was, to my surprise, the collard greens. The flavorful, creamy greens in soft focaccia bread was sublime. The burger was excellent, as were the hash browns. The yuba sandwich, which used to be my favorite sandwich at the old location, was for me good, but lacking in enough yuba. Normally a fan of abundant veggies, I felt the broccoli rabe volume overshadowed the yuba, my favorite part. The spicy sauce gave the sandwich necessary oomph. The broccoli rabe was cooked to perfection though. Every sandwich was packed with flavor. We tried the ice cream flavors available--cafe au lait and orange creamsicle (vegan). Not flavors I would normally have chosen, but both were very good and somewhat unusual. They made me really focus my taste buds since the notes were complex and contrasting. I preferred the former since it was creamier. I did think the price was a bit expensive for two scoops. Overall we had an excellent dining experience, with leftovers to spare. The mark of a good restaurant is its ability to consistently execute over time. By this standard, Superiority Burger is mediocre at best. The founding chef has been lauded for his ingenuity and technical brilliance, and I can still see those moments of genius shining through. The only thing that made my heart sing was the fries - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. This is not easy to accomplish, so I was appreciative of those. The filling to bread ratio was solid, although the bread became soggy at the end from the juices. Also got the hashbrown special which featured crispy edges that contrasted nicely with a savory mayo-cheese like sauce and other toppings.
