I expected the waiters to inquire if we're familiar with Ayurvedic principles and or are aware of our dosha type. This could have helped with guiding our choices, being prescriptive without being strict that a kapha can only order kapha meals. This was a refreshing drink for a hot day. I was expecting it to be thicker but it feels like the texture of thin almond milk. - cashew vegetable curry (6/10): mixed vegetables in a coconut cashew curry with a lentil beet dal and rice. Our server recommended this as one of their more popular entrees. I was initially confused by the beet dal as it looked like a generous pour of tomato sauce. For a curry, it could have used more flavor and warming spices. I also would have liked the curry part to have a protein as it was not very filling. - vegan lasagna (9/10): brown rice pasta layered with sunflower mozzarella and roasted vegetables. This was the best dish out of the ones we ordered. The slice is a decent portion for one person. I liked the variety of vegetables on the inside, especially the broccoli. Similar to the dal, it would have been nice to have a protein in this. - chocolate rose mousse (4/10): whipped chocolate rose mousse. Texturally, this was spot on. Everything definitely feels very healthy and good for the body which is the whole purpose of the restaurant. 3 of us shared an appetizer and two entrees and it was enough food. Here's what we got: Paneer Nori Rolls - good! Tastes exactly how it sounds! Paneer wrapped in nori, coated in a masala chickpea batter. I would skip if you don't like the taste of seaweed. Lasagna - Rich but didn't taste heavy! Lots of veggies and the béchamel sauce was good! The pesto was a great touch and definitely needed for flavor. It was a bit one note without it. Overall the restaurant is a nice, healthy vegetarian option in the East Village that is very accommodating toward dietary requirements (including gluten-free, nut free, dairy-free). I had the vegan lasagna which was made with brown-rice pasta as well as the avocado dip. Both were very fresh, the lasagna was not traditional but definitely tasted healthy and had many interesting textures. Both dishes were well presented. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol but has a range of non-alcoholic wines sourced. The ambience is very relaxing and relatively quiet, the service was friendly but slightly haphazard. Made reservations for a table of 6 for 7:15 pm on a Saturday night, and the place was fully packed. Nice, cozy set-up with some soft music in the background and noise levels at average is how I'd describe the ambiance at Divya's Kitchen. The menu is very inspired by Ayurdeva and focused on Dosha's (The five elements combined in pairs to form the three bodily humours) - but I couldn't quite translate/figure out how the food combinations contributed to the dosha's. Food overall is very much on the sweeter side, which my biggest disappointment. We ordered a few small bits which consisted on Spiced Coconut Chips, Spinach-Cheese Cutlets, Paneer Nori Rolls, and Roasted Sweet Potatoes. The table enjoyed Chips and the Paneer Nori Rolls were my favorite. The Roasted Sweet Potatoes went really well with their spicy green chutney - which was my absolute favorite of the evening! I was having chutney shots towards the end of my meal! For mains, the winner was the Season Kitchari ($18 + $6 Paneer Protein) - packed with flavor, followed by Vegetable Curry in Cashew Sauce ($21). I got the Carrot Risotto ($21 + $6 Paneer) - which was disappointingly on a sweeter side, but filling enough in terms of portion size. The sauteed leafy greens were forgettable, but the basil-parsley pesto was packed with flavor. We ordered the spice coconut chips and although they were unique, it seemed like they gave us bottom of the bag crushed up chips, did not seem worth $9. We started off with the Sunflower Beet Hummus. Crisp light schmelt crackers and a delictable roasted carrot tahini was a wonderful lead into dinner our Prix Fixe dinners. I chose Soothing Mung Soup, Vegan Lasagna and the Chocolate Coconut Cake. My friend went with: Creamy Vegetable Soup, Lasagna, and Pecan Chocolate Cookie. Both soups were robust with flavor and not too filling. Both lasagnas were nicely portioned and tasty. The basil parsley pesto was used in both versions of the lasagna. My friend and I both agreed it was so tasty. I loved the rice pasta and sunflower milk béchamel used in the vegan version. Our desserts satisfied our sweet tooths without being overly sweet, dry or chalky like some vegan versions. I'd never tried ayurvedic food before, but it seems to be characterized by nutritious, comforting foods that are vegetable-heavy and flavorful but not overly spiced. (And it avoids certain vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes.) At first glance, the prices seem a bit high for dishes composed of such simple ingredients. However, everything is so well-prepared and packed with flavor while still being really healthy, so honestly, I think the experience is worth the price. On my first visit, I tried the cucumber avocado salad, which comes topped with watercress and a lovely walnut-avocado dressing. Since then, I've had the chance to try a few other dishes that have been great across the board. One of their specialties, the khichari bowl, really exceeded my expectations. So comforting yet full of flavor. The cilantro-mint chutney that comes on the side adds even more zing. The roasted vegetables bowl was also great, especially those tasty beluga lentils! I also tried the sweet waffles available on the brunch menu which were also very good. For dessert, the carob coconut cake was great: moist, sweet, and satisfying. The "pistachio fudge" was not my favorite. It doesn't contain chocolate (despite the name) and is basically lumps of mashed dates with pistachio sprinkled on top. I think they should rebrand them as energy bites or something rather than a dessert. The ayurvedic chai is excellent both hot and iced. The date cardamom shake is a must-try! Came here for a birthday dinner shortly after visiting another high-end vegan restaurant in midtown. In contrast, the vibe here is much more warm and inviting, casual but chic, and very down to earth. When I want a healthier vegan meal that seems more balanced, I always think of Divya's for their Ayurvedic meals. I came for the vegetable lasagna because it looked fantabulous in the photos. So after an extremely salty and overpriced vegan meal, this lasagna felt like a warm hug of your mom's cooking. That said, the vegetables (particularly broccoli) were definitely way overcooked, soft and mushy and very oily. You could tell this was prepared in a large batch and reheated multiple times. This lasagna would be great if the vegetables were still green and just cooked but not overcooked. The lasagna noodle also didn't have too much taste to it (like all the flavor was boiled out). But overall, this meal just felt very cozy and satisfying, so I tried to ignore the fact the vegetables were mush and enjoy all of the vegan ricotta and pesto. About half an hour after leaving I could also still feel the warm heat of the black pepper. I was quite surprised that this said Vata/Pitta. I don't have photos of the first time I came a few years ago, but also came with friends and tried the kitchari and some appetizers and the rose chocolate dessert but my company felt it was a tad overpriced and underwhelming. Anywhos, I really want to come back and enjoy some tea and kitchari. But I really hope there can be a tad more attention to detail on the food and making sure it tastes as fresh as it is. When I strolling down 1st Avenue in the East Village I always pass by this hole in the wall spot. This restuarant serves Ayuvedic cuisine which is healthy balanced food. Their cuisine is vegetarian and vegan with no usage of garlic and onions. When I arrived for early dinner there was outdoor dining and it was packed. So I decided to do indoor dining and I was the only one in the restaurant. Hostess who was also my server took my temperature and I even completed a contact tracing form in order to eat indoors. Staff was welcoming and menu looked interesting. The ambiance of this restaurant is zen like. The menu also offered a 3 course prix fixe menu for $33. Overwhelmed with choices I asked the server for recommendations and I went with all of the recommendations for appetizer, entree and dessert. For the appetizer I ordered the vegan mozzarella plate and omg this dish was to die for. The vegan mozzarella was picked and prepped so well that it made me forget that I was eating mozzarella. Definitely a must order dish. For the entree I went with the vegetarian lasagna which was MASSIVE and I ate only half of it and took the other half to go. FYI this dish can also be made vegan. The lasagna was one of the best vegetarian lasagna I have ever had. Can't wait to come back to try the vegan lasagna. For the dessert I tried the rose chocolate mousse which is to die for. The rose scent throughout this dish blew mind as I devour the raw chocolate mousse. I closed out my meal with the heart opening tea and my food experience had a happy ending. This restuarant also offers Ayuvedic cooking classes and certification course. If you're in the area, this is a great vegetarian/vegan place to eat in. Can't wait to come back. read more
