We had already gotten a couple of quotes, but really liked Dan and told them we wanted to move forward. Erika was extremely evasive about a quote. It was getting irritating. After a couple of months I couldn't let her off the hook, I wanted to get this project underway. I had to have an estimate. Her response to me was well "what is your budget." I said "I want what I want. " Again a runaround. She told me how qualified Dan was and any plumbers/craftsman they used and that we need to compare apples to apples. Of course, I understand that. She finally gave me a quote that I thought was quite high. So, in the meantime, I had contacted the manufacturer of the tile to make sure we had a contractor that was qualified to install large format tile. Then, Erika texted me and gave us a 10% discount. "Would that work?" She asked. Mind you, she refused to give us a breakout of any of the costs. I asked about the cost of the shower glass because I knew it was a pass-through. She wouldn't give me that. She also would not give me any itemization. She kept saying whether it comes in lower or higher we absorb the cost/or gain. She said they are different and just give one price. They aren't like other contractors. That's fine, I've never come across that, but they run the risk of losing a client. I got a quote from an equally qualified contractor. Except for Century, he was the highest bidder, but was considerably less expensive. The job is finished and we have a beautiful bathroom - -zero entry (aka walk-in) shower and large format tiles. It's a shame that Erika's evasiveness was very offputting. She seems to handle the business side and Dan does the technical side. As noted above, we were eager to work with them. However, the difficulties with the pricing made it impossible to move forward with them.

We tried to contact Oceano, but they were suddenly nowhere to be found. I walked into their Alexandria location mid June 2020 to discuss a kitchen remodel. I handed the…read moredesigner some papers that provided details of what I wanted. I requested that the entire kitchen design for the above cabinets remain the same measurements as I currently had. However, I wanted a lazy Susan in the corner unit below, and that meant changing the measurements of some of the bottom cabinets to fit it. I knew what cabinets I wanted. I knew what color theme I wanted. I picked out the color of the cabinets quickly. However, the whole design process from start to finish took 10 weeks. The designer told me he was very busy. I just needed to select the tiles for the floor and the backsplash. Once I left the designer a message that if I didn't meet him that weekend to nail down the tile selection, then I needed to cancel the entire job, he became available to meet with me to look at tiles together. I wanted the work to be done in November so it would be finished for the holidays. The crew was terrific. They were skilled. They were polite. They were very patient with me. I was working from home daily. So, I was always available to ask questions and oversee their work. A few issues came up that I believe was the fault of lack of detail during the design process. The top corner cabinet didn't come with shelves as I requested, but with a rotating round shelving unit. The cabinet above the sink was 3" shorter than my directions in writing that I handed the designer. So, these items had to be re-ordered and didn't come in until early January. Each time I tried to call and email the designer to ask him about these mistakes, he didn't respond. I worked with Luisa, the project manager. While she was never on site during the renovation, she always took my calls or called me back quickly (the same as emails). Frankly, I think Luisa should have been the designer for me and worked with me throughout the entire process. I don't think it was effective to have one "designer" come to my house twice and be available to meet me in the store to later hand it all over to the project manager. I probably feel this way because I didn't really need real design help. I knew what design I wanted from the start. I just needed advice to help me pick out the tiles.

While it's great to have a partner who is so handy around the house, he accumulated more tools than…read moreour garage could comfortably hold, so it was time to call the pros for a shed. We were both impressed with the sheds available on the website and what we saw on Yelp, so we decided Five Star Sheds would be perfect for our own custom shed. The guys were great to work with throughout every step of the process. They came out a couple months before installation to check out the building area and go over our options. (Because everyone was still getting in their pandemic home improvements, their spring schedule filled up quickly.) When filing the permit with the county, we learned that our original plan for the shed wouldn't be possible due to the property line distance requirements, so we needed to have a somewhat unusual 4'x12' design. The guys had no problem with this request and even designed a special roof overhang for my husband's kayak. A few days before installation, they gave us a heads up when previous project was running longer than initially anticipated, so we were able to make sure we could push it back by another day. It was amazing how quickly they built our incredible shed! The crew arrived just after 7:30 and by 2:30 we had a completed custom build! I watched from the window a few times throughout the process and each time I couldn't believe how quickly everything was coming together. It was so sturdy that they were able to test the shelves by standing on them. There are so many beautiful finishing touches to the shed, like metal plating at the entryway and decorative hinges. The parts of the shed also include very generous warranties, so if we ever have issues with the materials, we can call to get it fixed. We were blown away when we did our final walkthrough. If you are looking for a custom shed in the area, I wouldn't hesitate to call Five Star Sheds. They definitely live up to their business name. Even if you have to wait for your build, it's well worth it! The craftsmanship is unmatched and the team works hard to surpass your expectations every step of the way.
